SRI RAMAKRISHNA[1836-1886]

Sri Ramakrishna, who was born in 1836 andpassed away in 1886, represents the very core

of the spiritual realizations of the seers and

sages of India. His whole life was literally anuninterrupted contemplation of God. He

reached a depth of God-consciousness thattranscends all time and place and has a

universal appeal. Seekers of God of all religionsfeel irresistibly drawn to his life and teachings.

His parents, KshudiramChattopadhyaya andChandramani Devi, were

poor but very pious andvirtuous. As a child,Ramakrishna (hischildhood name was

Gadadhar) was dearlyloved by the villagers.From early days, he wasdisinclined towards formaleducation and worldlyaffairs.

His religious school ofthought led to theformation of theRamakrishna Mission byhis chief disciple SwamiVivekananda - both wereinfluential figures in theBengali Renaissance as

well as the Hindurenaissance during the19th and 20th centuries.[

God realization for all Humans

Through his God-intoxicated lifeSri Ramakrishna provedthat the revelation of Godtakes place at all timesand that God-realization isnot the monopoly of any

particular age, country, or

people. In him, deepestspirituality and broadestcatholicity stood side byside.

The Gospel of Sri Ramakrishna,

Sri Ramakrishna did not write any book, nor did hedeliver public lectures. Instead, he chose to speak in a

simple language using parables and metaphors byway of illustration, drawn from the observation of

nature and ordinary things of daily use. Hisconversations with Sri Ramakrishna were charming

and attracted the cultural elite of Bengal. Theseconversations were noted down by his disciple

Mahendranath Gupta who published them in the form

of a book, Sri Ramakrishna Kathamrita in Bengali. ItsEnglish rendering, The Gospel of Sri Ramakrishna,was released in 1942; it continues to be increasinglypopular to this day on account of its universal appeal

and relevance.

not brood over the pastmistakes, but shoulddevelop a positiveoutlook on life by

the sky at night, butnot when the sun rises.

Can you therefore saythat there are no starsin the heavens duringthe day? O man,

because you cannotfind God in the days ofyour ignorance, saynot that there is no

Free from Evils One cannot have the

vision of God as longas one has these three

shame, hatred, andfear.

Be not a traitor in yourthoughts. Be sincere; act

according to yourthoughts; and you shallsurely succeed. Pray witha sincere and simple heart,and your prayers will be

heard.

worldly thoughtsand anxietiesdisturb your mind.Do everythingthat is necessaryin the proper time,and let your mind

Live Like a Water fowl Live in the world like

a waterfowl. The waterclings to the bird, but

the bird shakes it off.Live in the world likea mudfish. The fishlives in the mud, but

its skin is alwaysbright and shiny.

There is nothingwrong in your being inthe world. But you

must direct your mindtoward God; otherwiseyou will not succeed.Do your duty with one

hand and with theother hold to God.After the duty is overyou will hold to God

with both hands.

One should constantlyrepeat the name of God.The name of God ishighly effective in the

Kaliyuga. The practice ofyoga is not possible in thisage, for the life of a mandepends on food. Clap

your hands whilerepeating God's name, andthe birds of your sins willfly away
