Life Changing Mantras: Tools from the Other Side

    Introduction

T his is not just another book. This book willchange your destiny. It carries secret soundsand other tools used by enlightened beings inancient times from the esoteric teachings ofIndia. Sri Siva extends blessings for new adventures in yourcurrent life in the modern age, as you read and try out the partsthat appeal to you.

The book touches on several key areas of human life andoffers plenty of practical solutions. It is a book you can readmore than once as you will experience the material in deeperways with repeated exposure, and as your life changes. Evenworking with just a few of the techniques will bring greatbenefit.

Who Is Sri Siva?Sri Siva is a spiritual name of Dr. Baskaran Pillai. (In past

years, he has also been called Maharishi Brzee, Sri Guruji andGuruji.) Sri Siva comes from an illustrious and esoteric lineageof enlightened Indian saints, the Tamil Siddhas, who have beenpassing on enlightened teachings for thousands of years, usuallyin very small circles of selected students.

Sri Siva is quite radical in the presentation of these teach-ings. He says that from now on there are no more secrets.Everything should be public knowledge and inexpensive. Histask is to bring these teachings to the West where there is trueyearning for wisdom.

Sri Siva is a fully enlightened teacher. In some traditions,

W elcome to a great adventure in Self-Discovery. The Self is a complexconcept. There is a higher Self, andthen there is this relative self. Thehigher Self is the formless one which has manifested in theformed one. We are concerned in this book with the manifestedaspect of our self, because the unmanifested aspect is incompre-hensible. It is God. It has no shortcomings whatsoever. But themanifested part has a lot of imperfections.

The Secret Sounds and other tools in this book will enableyou to create positive, powerful changes for yourself. You mayuse these to benefit yourself or others.

Until now, I have never made a serious attempt to publishmy writings. There were times in the past when I was asked tomeet with attorneys to sign a contract for book deals; and at onetime my editor even took an advance, which she returned aftersix months since I would not cooperate to write the book.

Many people judged me according to their own perceptionsof reality. Some said I was lazy, unreliable, and irresponsible.Others who a were little kinder to me said, No doubt, Sri Sivais a rare enlightened being, but that doesnt exempt him frombeing accountable.

But nothing of what others thought of me mattered, for Iwas and continue to be in my own ivory tower which oftencollapses, and like the phoenix, reemerge instantaneously. Myunwillingness to publish was not a self-determined one. In myworld there is nothing that is permanent. Everything arises and

this is understood as a prophet, a Messiah. According to anancient Oracle tradition, the sacred Nadi palm leaves ofKakabhusunda, Nandi and others, Sri Siva is an incarnation ofLord Siva on this earth-plane. The purpose of this incarnation isto save the world from self-destruction through interventionfrom another, much higher world.

Sri Sivas book offers information that will bridge the gapbetween matter and spirit for many people, and allow morepeople direct experience of Divine Grace. The Nadi leaves ofVisvamitra, Agastiya, Bogar, Siva Sukshmam and Siva Vakiyahave all confirmed the divine avatar mission of Sri Siva.

Sri Siva currently lives in the United States with his wife anda daughter who currently attends university.

He served as coordinator of Indian Studies within the AsianStudies Program at the University of Pittsburgh and taughtseveral courses on Buddhist meditation and other Buddhisttopics. His specialty included research integrating religiousphenomena with modern science. He had training inneuropsychology which was used in research interpretingtraditional yogic and tantric wisdoms about psychobiology. Healso served as an editor for the Encyclopedia of Hinduism.

Sri Siva has taught meditation for two decades as well asseminars on successful thinking all over the world. He inspirednoted author Wayne Dyer to write his recent best-selling book,Manifest Your Destiny, which Wayne Dyer dedicated to Sri Sivaas Guruji.

In addition, Sri Siva has been active in the computer fieldwith an office in the Silicon Alley section of Manhattan. He isalso engaged in putting his mystical teachings into variousmodern formats such as CD, video, and now for the first time,a book available to the general public.

  • Einstein in his previous birth was Bogar, a Tamil Siddha.Whatever may be the truth of the statement, I personally believeit to be true because Bogar was also a mathematician; there areunmistakable parallels. Einstein was painfully aware of the limi-tation of his work and the purely theoretical nature of physicsand mathematics.

Einstein wrote, Mathematics deals exclusively with therelations of concepts to each other without consideration oftheir relation to experience. The world still follows Newtonianlaws and the Einstenian universe of relativity is considered onlytheoretically true. When they will become true is the day whenwe begin to live the concepts or when the concepts becomeexperiential realities.

Wayne Dyer in his best-selling book, Manifest Your Destiny, expresses this idea: Unfortunately, the people of the world haveyet to apply this hologrammatic understanding to their living.Seeing ourselves as connected to all of humanity is an ideawhose time will come, and it will not be stopped.

When Wayne Dyer and I met at Ed Marzecs home inBeverly Hills, I asked Wayne Dyer what he wanted in life. Iremember him replying, I want to disappear. I knew that hehad disappeared before in his previous life times. That is why hespeaks about Castanedas teachings from Don Juan many times,as they contain the idea of disappearing into another world.

Disappearing with the body is realizing E=mc2 in an experi-ential way. The Buddha, Jesus, Mohammed, Jnanasambanda,Appar, Sundarar, Manikavacakar, and a host of Tamil Siddhasall disappeared. None among the list of ascended masters was ascientist, but then they had access to a higher science in whichenergy and matter are experientially interchangeable.

In Einsteinian terms these masters converted their mass m(representing their body) to the speed of light (about 183,000miles per second) which is represented by the c2 in the equa-tion. All that we need to know is that our physical body is

falls. I have always been a witness to everything that goes on. I must tell you if this book finally gets written and published

it is not my wish. It is the wish of the Divine to make thesesecrets available to you.

In this connection, I remember an anecdote in the life of SriRamana Maharishi, a fully enlightened being fromTriuvannamali (southern India) who left his body in 1950. Hisexample taught me many things as we shall see later.

Ramana Maharishi attracted many important people fromthe West including Paul Brenton, Somerset Maugham, CarlJung, and others. It was Carl Jung who said that RamanaMaharishi was the whitest spot in the white sky. RamanaMaharishi left home when he was 14 or younger and meditatedall his long life.

Even after his enlightenment, and even though there was acoterie of wealthy people who would do anything for him, SriRamana never had an ashram built for himself, not even asimple home. In fact, once when a European devotee presentedhim with a Mercedes Benz, he refused to accept it. RamanaMaharishi told the devotee, I dont know how to take care ofthis cart [meaning body], and I dont need another one!

However, one day after his walk, Sri Ramana Maharishi saton the ground and would not get up. He said that he wanted toconstruct an ashram there and that the desire was not his, butGods. I think I can relate to his statement.

This book, too, is Gods wish. I totally claim no credit for it.If I happen to misrepresent anything, that, too, is Gods faultand not mine. I am in one sense rejoicing very much, for I havebeen able to bring out to the world the most precious teachingsof the enlightened Tamil Siddhas.

In many respects the Tamil Siddhas teachings are similar tothe teachings of Einstein, although the Siddhas were practicaland Einstein more theoretical.

In fact, someone told me, or I heard it somewhere, that

    10

  • I needed to breathe and later master the spiritual energy thatdissolves terrible karma of people so that I can help them todiffuse their karma. This vision made perfect sense to mebecause, until I was 18 years old, I never left the island, so I wassoaking in the aura of Rameswaram very deeply.

I remember as a boy I used to go to the temple every singleday. My greatest attraction in the temple was not the maindeity, but a beautiful shrine of Siva Nataraj (the dancing form ofLord Siva) which is situated in the outer corridor of the temple.I was attracted to this spot over and over again, and I spent allmy free time sitting there. I told my family that on my birthdaywe needed to do special food offering to the dancing Siva, apractice that went on for a while.

Even after I went to college, I came back to this shrine. Butthis time I had a little more understanding. I had learned thatbelow the statue was the tomb of the Siddha Patanjali, theenlightened master who is the author of the Yoga Sutras. TheSiddhas do not die. Some of them walk into a small enclosureand turn into a Siva Linga (a holy object symbolizing Siva).

My father was a painter and sculptor. He was a good one, although with the indifference that goes along with artists ingeneral. The burden of raising five boys naturally fell on mymother who made sure that everyone had the right educationand did not become an artist!

However, I was the most beloved and problematic boy formy mom. She loved me because I was the most intelligent of allher kids and stood first in the class, but she hated me because Ikept her up in the night. She thought that I had insomnia andtook me to the doctor who, after examining me, concluded thatthere was nothing wrong physically or mentally, although hecould not figure out why I could not fall asleep. During thenight I used to move from one bedroom to another, and mymother had a hard time finding me out. Although my sleepless-ness has continued to this day, I have greater understanding

solidified light; and that it can be transformed back into lightparticles again at will.

I want the readers of this book to know that before time in memori-am, Tamil Siddhas had bridged the gap between physical laws and reallife experiencethe problem as Einstein saw it. For instance, theSiddhas saw the five elements as much in the physical environment asin the body/mind and sense perceptions of life. Space, air, fire, waterand earth, all elements of nature, transform themselves into vata(space and air), pitta (fire) and kapha (water and earth). I hope to sharemore about these Siddha secrets later.

Birth and ChildhoodI was born February 1, 1949 on a small island named

Rameswaram in southern India. Rameswaram is near thesouthern-most tip of the Indian subcontinent and is only a fewmiles away from Sri Lanka. In mythical times Lord Rama hadordained this island as the perfect geographical space to removethe most sinful karma. In Ramas own case he had to get rid ofhis karma for having killed his rival in battle, the demonicRavana. Although Ravana was an evil person and deserveddeath, killing someone in and of itself has its own consequences, and Rama needed to pay for this karma.

Rama established a shrine for Lord Siva and ordained thatwhosoever had done terrible karma could come to this shrineand wash their sins in the temple. The tradition is still followedin the temple. Pilgrims go to the temple and take a dip in thewaters from 20 or more wells that surround the temple. Withwet clothes, the pilgrims then walk into the sanctum sanc-torum. Because of this custom the temple floor is always wet. Ifwater can purify sins, it is truer in this temple than anywhereelse.

Until recently I had no clear idea of why I reincarnated inRameswaram. Kakabhusunda, the immortal yogi of all times, ina vision revealed to me the purpose of my birth at Rameswaram.

  • degree in English Literature. I wanted to do my Masters imme-diately, but I was not accepted that year.

What followed was an intense period of soul-searching expe-rience. My uncle who was a Vedic astrologer predicted a fewthings which turned out to be true in spite of my attempts tochallenge them. It was my first serious attempt to look intodestiny, karma and astrology. I began to raise questions like whysomeone was born rich, and someone else did not even havefood to eat; why someone despite being very intelligent couldnot even get a job, while some idiot became the CEO of acompany.

I began to look for answers to these questions in Vedicastrology which in India is a science that explains the karma ofindividuals. Vedic astrology became almost an obsession in mylife during this time, and I collected about 1,000 horoscopes ofpeople belonging to various vocations in order to do an empir-ical study.

My mother was getting annoyed about my interest inastrology and metaphysics. She wanted me to be a normalperson and pursue the common pleasures or agony of humanlife, including getting a job and getting married and begetting abunch of kids. Her greatest dissatisfaction was my spending allmy time studying Vedic astrology, because in India it is believedthat you should not mess with ones future, for it is the realm ofthe Divine. One day when I was away my mother pitched outall my Vedic astrology books and notes and when I returned, she threw a tantrum to underline her point. But, by this time Iwas so deeply involved in the metaphysical areas of life that itwas impossible for me to lead a normal life, although duringthis time I had earned my Masters degree in English Literature.

It was during this time that I met a famous man who hadinfluence in my life, Dr. Meenakshi Sundaram. He was a manof great accomplishment and an internationally renownedacademician. He introduced me to Transcendental Meditation

about sleep now. When I was 10, I started to meditate on my own. I

remember lighting a candle in front of a small picture of theBuddha and meditating. I liked the Buddha because he taughtnonviolence and compassion. Even at a very young age, myemotions were very stable.

When I was twelve, my father died of cancer, and I hardlycried or was visibly moved. My relatives thought I was weird, and they gave up on me when I protested against some of thetraditional funeral rites and rituals. Looking back, I now under-stand that my strange behavior was my protest against deathwhich I now clearly know is lifes slap on our face.

In 1991 my mother died and I was in the U.S., and again, Ihardly cried, but by then my understanding on this point wasmuch more mature. I even knew in advance that my motherwas going to die, for she had been bedridden for long time. Afew days before her death, I had Shridi Baba come to me in mymeditation. Shridi Baba was a Siddha who lived in central Indiain the later part of the nineteenth century and died in the earlypart of the twentieth century.

Shridi Baba told me that my mother was going through a lotof pain and that I should give permission for her to make thetransition through the death process. My mother had been myfirst meditation student, a fact that I had always been proud of.I wanted to give her what Sri Ramana Maharishi gave to hismother. When Ramanas mother was dying he put his hand onthe chest where the spiritual heart is and disbursed her karma. The woman died, and Ramana declared that she would notcome back again. This is what I did for my mother, thoughfrom a long distance. My mother cooperated with me. She saidthat she had no desire to come back to the earth-plane and washappy to be liberated from the cycle of birth and death.

My college life was nothing spiritually significant, and I didwhat other college kids did. I got out of college with a bachelors

  • as taught by Maharishi Mahesh Yogi. I could not wait tobecome a TM teacher. TM teacher training, which took aboutfour months full-time to complete, was a God-given opportu-nity. I take this opportunity to publicly thank Sri Guru Dev(Maharishis guru) and the Maharishi himself for that wonderfullearning opportunity, for after the training, I was never the sameperson.

I came home, and my mother was my first meditationstudent. I initiated her on Ganeshas birthday. After teachingTM for a while, I went to Rishikesh in the Himalayas to do theTM-Siddhi training program. Being in the Himalayas widenedmy interest in spirituality, and after that I returned to theHimalayas for many meditation experiences, visiting my homeonly a few times.

Again, my mother got annoyed over my spiritual inclina-tions, and she came up with a plot of a marriage proposal forme and threatened that she would kill herself if I would notaccept the proposal. Indian mothers are such good adepts inblackmailing their children, and I fell a victim. But I was clever, too. I told my mom that I needed to go to the Himalayas forthree more months, and after that I would marry the girl.

The girl is my wife Vasantha whom I only got a glimpse ofin one of the arranged marriage interviews, traditionally set upaccording to certain conventions. Vasantha was shy to look atmy face, although I was least worried about her looks, for in mymind, my conspiracy was to please my mom temporarily andget back to the Himalayas. I told the brides people that I wouldcome back after three months and marry her. I did not show upfor a year intentionally. Once you are not around for such along time, the brides people look for another groom. But, asfate would have its way, I came back, and Vasantha was not stillmarried. I married her on September 16, 1977, again onGaneshas birthday.

To me being married mostly meant being stuck at one

geographical location, something which I never understood, much less could actually live in this lifetime. I took a researchscholars position at the University of Madurai in theDepartment of English and Comparative Literature. TheUniversity provided me with staff quarters near the mountains, and I spent two wonderful years in that secluded place.

My academic project was to find out the paradox that JohnDonne (a famous English metaphysical poet) had faced betweenGod and sex. I wrote what I considered, at the time, a brilliantdissertation on the sacred nature of carnality which paved myway to the University of Pittsburgh where I expanded mystudies for my Ph.D. However, I dont intend to discuss myacademic life too much, for now I think such endeavors, although not entirely meaningless, are nevertheless useless atthis point in my life.

What was very important during my university time atMadurai was my meeting with Sri Dhandapani Desikar, myguru who introduced me to the practice of Sri Vidya. Sri Vidyais the most esoteric practice of meditation that only a few adeptteachers have the ability to teach.

The practice involves the worship of the goddess LalitaTripurasundari with the help of the mandala called Sri Chakraor Sri Yantra. In recent times, the greatest exponent of Sri Vidyawas Swami Brahamanada Saraswati, Mahesh Yogis guru. SwamiRama writes in his book, Living with the Himalayan Masters, that during his days with the Himalayan master, SwamiBrahamanda Saraswati, the master had shown him a Sri Chakrawhich he worshipped made out of ruby. Also, Swami Ramawrites that if he had any spiritual powers at all, they came fromSri Vidya.

My Practice of Sri VidyaMy guru Sri Dhandapanis Desikar was a very remarkable

man. He had no formal education, yet was a professor of

    17

Section ISivas Teachings: A Birds Eye ViewSri Siva Speaks

  • Desikar said what had taken place was remarkable. He said thegoddess was responding to my prayer, and on my request, hechanged my vision of the goddess into a pleasant one.

Since then the goddess has been with me doing many, manymiracles in my personal life, except for a few years when she leftme for some reasons that I cant discuss here at this time.

Some Miracles with the GoddessFor the worshippers of Sri Vidya, the goddess in general

appears in two ways. One form is as a light being visible to theeyes, but not tangible. This form is rare, but then, it is the mostpowerful appearance of the goddess. In Sanskrit this phenom-enon is called darshan (sacred seeing) of the goddess. I have hadmany such experiences of the goddess and could call her at anytime. I have also been able to show her to other people who areworthy of the darshan.

The other form that the goddess appears is in the form ofhuman females. In the sacred literature of the goddess, it isstated very clearly that the woman and the goddess are the sameexpression of the Great Archetypal Female. This is the reasonwhy that my charitable organization, Tripura Foundation, andother enterprises are run mostly by women. In fact, the TripuraFoundation was started with a donation of $18,000 given by awoman who wanted to remain anonymous. She never has saidanything to anyone about her donation. Since then manywomen have served the organization selflessly.

The most important help I received from the goddess wasduring the time I was doing my Ph.D. program. I started outlate and knew too much about life, which was actually ahindrance for a student. I never kept my appointments with myexaminers; I saw them very seldom and never did anything ontime, despite their expectations.

Not that I was irresponsible, but I was responsive to themoment. I was trying to find out how the moment existed in

    19

Section ISivas Teachings: A Birds Eye View

Tamilology at the university. Every university in the state recog-nized his scholarship. In his long life of 85 years, Sri Desikarhad written about 180 books in all. Meeting with Sri Desikarwas a Divinely inspired event. We could not resist each other, and Sri Desikar agreed to teach me Sri Vidya.

I went through the regular guru-disciple routine. I was liter-ally his personal attendant helping him with all daily spiritualand religious rituals. My day would start at 4:00 a.m. I neededto go to the flower garden and pluck the flowers, chantingmantras as I did the chore. Then I had to help him bathe, soaping his body, etc. At 7:00 a.m., he would start his puja forLord Siva for about an hour. At 9:00 a.m., his wife would serveus a massive lunch which often made me uncomfortable in thebeginning, to be served so much food.

During this time Sri Desikar taught me many things ofwhich the most important was the worship of the goddess withher special 16 mantras. The day Sri Desikar initiated me intothe mantras, I had a profound experience. I was initiated in themorning. He told me there was no fee for the service, but Ineeded to take some ghee (clarified butter) for the lamps to thetemple of goddess Meenakshi (who is considered a form ofParvati, Lord Sivas wife). I sincerely carried out his instructionand went home in the evening.

Around midnight, I was awakened from a very vivid dream.I saw the goddess, but she was in her ferocious form. She carrieda trident and seemed as though she wanted to kill me with it. Iscreamed and woke up. My wife heard my cry, and she woke uptoo. The image of the goddess began to haunt me. Everywhere Iwent, I saw her constantly in front of me, though she was notpointing her trident towards me any more. But I was still scaredand did not want to do anything with her.

I stopped visiting my guru for a couple of days. Sri Desikarapparently knew exactly what was happening to me and sent forme. I went and saw him and confessed what had happened. Sri

  • of Lord Siva. The five faces of Siva (Isana, Tatpurasha, Aghora,Vama and Sadhyojata) are five parts of the human brain. Theinitiation was so powerful that revelations about the five parts ofthe brain keep coming to me in an unending way. The initia-tion was in 1981, and in a prestigious conference presided byNobel Laureate Eugene Wigner, I presented the correlationbetween the five faces of Lord Siva and the human brain. Atsome point in my life, it is my destiny to reveal the secrets ofawakening the five faces of Siva. This book is to begin preparingpeople, so I do hope many of you will actually practice some ofthe techniques I give here, so later I can share more with you.You must begin preparations now.

Without much further ado, I want to dwell on some of myenlightenment experiences, just a few, and I am deeply indebtedhere to two great spiritual masters of the last century who Inever physically met: Bhagavan Rajneesh (also known as Osho)and J. Krishnamurti.

I have read almost every piece of Sri Rajneeshs writings andexperimented with most of the techniques advocated by him. Itwas during one of the dance meditations called Nataraj that Ifell down and was in Samadhi for 12 hours. Since then, therewas a great shift in my consciousness which got intensified inmy attempt to understand time.

One day I was reading J. Krishnamurtis excellent, althoughsomewhat advanced book, Ending Time. The book is a veryintense conversation between Dr. David Bohm and J.Krishnamurti. Dr. Bohm in that book pushes Krishnamurti toexplain thought and time. As I was reading this book, my mindblanked and experienced no time. This was the scariest experi-ence that I ever had. I felt that the Divine was giving me achoice to be here in the mind or be totally mindless. I thoughtthat I had almost lost my sanity and wouldnt be able to comeback to the normal world. With tremendous effort, I cameback; and I am glad that I did, for I never wanted to be a yogi

    21

time and space. I did at least explain this to one examiner whowas willing to be my student. He told me that he understoodmy problems, but insisted that I should be functional in a worldof cause and effect, a problem that I may never be able to solve.

During this time the goddesss help was very practical. Sheknew that I could not read everything in the many, manytextbooks that I was expected to read. She was very sharp and tothe point. She provided me with the ability to know thequestions beforehand so that I prepared answers only for thosequestions. I know every student who reads this would beenvious of me and want to develop a relationship with thegoddess! But I must tell you that the grace of the goddess is theresult of spiritual work done in many life times. Shankara, theEinstein of Indian mysticism, after his hair-splitting encounterswith intellectuals, came to the goddess for his liberation andhappiness.

I must also tell you that the most powerful way of invokinga divine entity is to use the mandala for that being. Within thegoddess tradition, the most powerful tool used in her invocationis the Sri Yantra (also called Sri Chakra). Sri Yantra or SriChakra is a formation of 43 triangles transposed in a certaingeometrical pattern within concentric circles enclosed bysquares.

Sacred geometry belongs to the language of the divine. It issuch a powerful tool that the Divine lets only certain individualswho have transcended their ego-self know its secrets. Everythingfrom attracting a woman or a man you want, or incrediblewealth, or talking to dead people, to harming your enemies, canbe accomplished through the use of the mandalas. In otherwords, mandalas are the DNA codings of a universal energysystem. The Tamil Siddhas are quite adept in this esotericsystem.

Another major gift that I received from Sri Desikar was initi-ation into the five important mantras representing the five faces

The above pages of my autobiography were written in 1997,and I had put them aside until now. During the past five yearsmany, many things have occurred. I dont currently intend todiscuss them in this brief sketch of my life. Sometime later if Ifind it necessary, I will do a longer version of my spiritual auto-biography.

I feel compelled to say something about Nadi astrology.Nadi astrology is a special form of astrology practiced by theSiddhas of ancient India. The Siddhas, who are enlightenedbeings, recorded on palm leaves the life eventspast, present, futureof some souls in order to help them in this lifetime.

There are many types of Nadi astrology, and one shouldapproach them with caution, discrimination, and intelligence. One of the most remarkable Nadi leaves came from the enlight-ened sage Saint Visvamitra. There are many types of Visvamitraleaves, and all of them are not of the same quality. It is fair to

ugliness of silence, and this is a commentary about the Divinecoma stage. I must add also I had an extended trance experiencepracticing a light technique described in the book, The Secrets ofthe Golden Flower.

During my long search for enlightenment, I have had thegrace of several gurus, Siddhas and Divine beings, and I amgrateful to all of them. I have learned something from every oneof them. My ultimate encounter with enlightenment was due tothe infinite Grace of the Dancing Siva at Chidambaram inIndia. I have had a very long term relationship with Him inmany, many births. His guiding hand leads me every minute ofmy life. Some day He will, through me, reveal the secrets of thefive letters NA MA SI VA YA which is the answer to themystery of the universe. Every master comes to the earth-planewith a mission and his own idiosyncratic version of enlighten-ment. It is so beautiful to see so many blossoms from God withsuch miraculous colors.

It does not make sense to me that the truth isone/none/many. To me, celebration is the only Truth there is.This is the secret of the dancing Siva at Chidambaram. LordSiva is the eternal dancer who lives both stillness and dancesimultaneously. This is the meaning of the marvelous sculptureof the dancing Siva Nataraj which has attracted the attention ofthe entire world.

During my long path of inquiry through several of mybirths, I have found that Truth is open-ended, and even theAbsolute is Relative, as time causes evolution. As digital sciencebegins to understand the nuances of light and sound waves, there will be an outburst of wisdom that will bring heaven onearth. This will be my mission in the years to come. But fornow, I wish to open up the world of secret sounds (mantras)and other tools.

  • The transition from a material body to an immaterial bodyis a fascinating experience. Over the past two years I have hadmany revelations about the evolution of my soul. Ancient palmleaves in India that are in possession of some individualsunveiled my previous incarnations on this earth-plane.Evidently, I have had thousands of incarnations, if not more. The palm leaves revealed a few of them: Bhishma, Agastiya,Bhrigu, Manikavacakar and Swami Ramalingam.

My Bhishma incarnation is the weakest when compared tothe rest. No doubt Bhishma was semi-Divine, but then I had todie at some point, although it was my own personal choice. Idied on a bed of arrows at the beginning of the Winter solsticewhen the sun moved into Capricorn. The Agastiya incarnationis very interesting. As Agastiya, the palm leaves maintain that Ivisited the earth-plane some 800 times. In some incarnationsout of the 800, I stayed here for some years and at other times, Iappeared and disappeared staying only for a few hours or fewmonths. I had miraculous powers to acquire a body and todissolve it at will. It is because of this reason that Lord Siva oncesaid that Agastiya was his equal.

My incarnation as Manikavacakar was the most agonizingone. I documented my frustrations in the thousands of hymnsthat I wrote during that incarnation. I resented my filthyhuman body, my ignorant mind and the torture of the fivesenses. Although I was the Prime Minister of the King andenjoyed the royal benefits of that office, my mind was little atpeace. The appearance of Lord Siva in the guise of a humanguru to initiate me was a turning point in my life. After theinitiation I was transformed. I was no longer the PrimeMinister. Nevertheless, I was not fully Enlightened either. I stillhad to battle with my human body, mind, and the senses. Butfinally, at the Chidambaram Temple, Siva absorbed me into hisimage. Even today psychics perceive my image inside theDancing Siva at Chidambaram.

say that Saint Visvamitra contacted me through his leaves. These leaves were in the possession of a guy who has been

reading regularly for the prime minister and president of India. The leaves commissioned this guy by saying that he should seekme out and read my future to me. To make a long story short, through a series of miracles, he came to see me. The leavesopened up a new world for me.

I remembered many of my past lives as great saints of India. The final revelation was that I was the incarnation of Siva himself. It is embarrassing for me to write this. But since I am neitherattracted nor repulsed by it, I decided to include this information.Nevertheless, I also wrote sometime ago the following lines inresponse to those predictions.

The Human Becoming the DivineIt is very interesting to dwell upon the process of the human

becoming the Divine. Within the Hindu-Buddhist tradition, the difference between the human and Divine is a matter ofconsciousness. The human is limited. The human is stuck in thematerial body and in an ignorant mind, whereas the Divine hasno material existence and has a divine mind. The Divine is alsoinfinitely intelligent. Mans destiny is to become, ultimately,Enlightenedwhat this means is that the human is becomingthe Divine. To use the terminology of physics, it is matterbecoming energy. The Judeo-Christian tradition also has somereference to the relationship between the human and theDivine. The Bible says that God created man in his own image. This means that God has an image, and it looked like the imageof a human being.

All traditions speak about angels and other Divine beings.Mythology has it that these Divine beings have no physicalbody, although they have a form made up of light. They appearand disappear by their choice and by their power make them-selves known to certain human beings.

  • Ramalingam has done immense good for the evolution of mysoul. Both were fully realized beings and identified themselveswith Siva himself. They both claimed that after theirencounter with Siva, they had become Siva himself. However, both felt that although they became Siva, Lord Siva was stilldifferent from them. This is in accordance with the Saivaphilosophy that your soul is part of Siva but not Siva himself.Swami Ramalingam, before he took off, proclaimed that theGod of Light, Siva, would come to the Earth-plane and staythere for awhile performing numerous miracles and trans-forming the planet Earth.

It is interesting that the palm leaves have now revealed thatSiva has indeed come to the earth-plane. He is within my bodyand will reveal himself soon. I am myself both fascinated andexcited. On the one hand, I experience this human body withgastric troubles, toothache, poor vision, etc., combined withother human limitations caused by maya, karma and ego. I amawaiting very eagerly for the transformation of this body intoLight. This event, when that happens, will have a huge impacton the evolution of planet Earth. As a human being I am fullyaware that I cannot manipulate this transformation. It is purelythe decision of the Divine. I invite students to pray devoutly toSiva to descend into my body for the upliftment of the humanbeings on planet Earth.

My absorption into the image of Siva is very fascinating.Lord Siva turned my body into light, and I was pulled into theLords image. I was thankful to Siva for ending my karma anduplifting me to his level. It was such a blissful experience. However, I had a deep desire to know the dynamics of thematerial body turning into light. So, Lord Siva gave me anotherbirth as Ramalingam. This time, the purpose of the incarnationwas to systematically and experientially understand the transfor-mation of the body into light.

My entire life as Ramalingam was spent on giving theoreticaland practical proof as to how matter can turn into light. From atheoretical standpoint, two basic principles are very important. One is the gross five elements of earth, water, fire, air, and spaceturning to their corresponding insubstantial energy forms. Thesecond principle is the opening of the Third Eye that results in theremoval of seven layers of material and energy consciousness. It isimportant to note that these two purificatory processes are fairlydifficult to accomplish by human efforts alone. It is ultimately upto the mercy of Siva that accomplishes it.

Siva appeared before Ramalingam, who was sleeping on thefloor. He woke him up. Ramalingam saw the splendor of Sivasform. Siva then hugged him. Ramalingams body instanta-neously became a light body. He also developed the Third Eyeof Siva. Siva then left and Ramalingams body reverted back toits original flesh and blood form. Ramalingam was quiteunhappy. Nevertheless, he remembered the initiation and hopedthat one day he would permanently get the Light Body.Accordingly, in 1873 Ramalingams body turned into Light. Many of his disciples were in awe, but none wanted the Lightbody. Ramalingam was upset that his students preferred threemeals and full gossip over the Light Body. He decided to takeoff and come back at a later time. So, he disappeared on January30th of 1874.

C onsider this example: Someone is the presidentof a country; someone else lives as a homelessperson in the same country. Why is there thisinequality? How come some get everything soeasily and others have to work hard and still get nothing andsuffer? The answer is: its all the individuals karma. Karma is theonly theory that can explain the mysteries of lifethe mysteryof joy and suffering, health and disease, success and failure, longlife and premature death and other dichotomies.

Simply put, karma is your past life: the desires and plansthat you held in your previous life. These are now presentingthemselves in this life. They may not necessarily be from yourmost immediate past life. They may be from other lives that youhad lived long ago.

In fact, what you call the present or the future is indeed yourpast. Everything that you wanted to do in the past, you are nowdoing in the present. These things may end now, or they maynot end now. Maybe it will take a few more births to end them. This is the philosophy of karma: you desire something andcreate karma and a lifetime (or lifetimes) to experience it.

I am going to take you on a tour of life with its joys, trialsand tribulations. Understanding life is about understandingkarma. For your quick reference, I have put together a shortFAQ followed by a longer chapter on karma.

Karma is what governs life.Mantra is what corrects it.

  • The easiest way to change your karma is to use the mantraThiru Neela Kantam. You visualize a blue light in your throatand go on chanting this mantra at your throat. This mantra willreverse your bad karma. In addition to chanting the mantra, you need to reprogram your mind with positive affirmations. Aset of positive affirmations is in the section, Prayer to theMind on my CD, Meditations and Affirmations with a Master.

Karma, Destiny, GrowthIn short, karma is your destiny. An orange seed has a destiny

to grow into an orange tree. An apple seed grows into an appletree. Just as a plant has a destiny so does every human being.

Destiny is destination. You start out at a point and thenmove forward. Finally, you stop moving forward, and themomentum ends.

Growth is a mystery. Ironically, growth itself is a process ofdecay! A child is growing, but at the same time it is decaying! The child is growing towards old age and death.

It is the mystery that led the Buddha to explore life. TheBuddha said, I am a prince, but what good is it if I am goingto decay? And, in his escapades out of the palace, he went outand confronted people who were suffering from illnesses. Hediscovered that the skin shrinks and a once beautiful facebecomes ugly. Some become crippled and disabled. Hedemanded: What good is this life? I must find out the meaningof this life.

I dont want to sound too philosophical. There is anexpression, Philosophy never bakes bread, which is to sayphilosophy is not practical. So, what is karma again? Karma isthe force which causes you to reincarnate. Birth after birth, youcome into being because there is this cyclical karmic force whichcreates life to experience desires which you had no time toexperience in that lifetime. And for some, a time comes whenyou dont want to come back at all, because you are tired of

    Karma: Frequently Asked Questions

What is karma?Karma is the spiritual law of cause and effect. Through good

acts you create good karma, and through bad acts you createbad karma. For instance, if you have done good actions in yourpast lives, this lifetime will bring a life of luxury, good healthand happiness. Conversely, bad karma from past lives will createproblems, suffering and poverty in this lifetime. Can one change his or her karma?

Yes and no. Karma is ones destiny. There are certain types ofkarma that you can change, and some types you cant change. For instance, it is impossible to change an orange into an appleor a donkey into a horse. But, it is certainly possible to changeones financial or relationship karma. We came to the earth-plane to undergo karma. Is it not wrong tochange ones karma?

If you have good karma and that good karma is giving yougood results, you dont need to change that karma. Bad lifecreated by bad karma must be changed. It is not a good idea toprolong pain and suffering in the name of God or bad karma.Do our present acts create karma?

Yes. Not only your acts create karma, but even yourthoughts also create karma. You should be careful about whatyou think. Can I change the karma of someone else?

You could. But I advise against it. When you interfere withthe karma of others, there is always a price to be paid. Oneshould be strong enough to take on the karma of others beforeattempting this. What is the relationship between karma and reincarnation?

Reincarnation is caused by karma. If there is no karma inyour stockpile, there will be no reincarnation. How do I change my karma?

And the funny thing about the bicycle was that the originalbicycle did not have a brake. The man who invented it did notsee the necessity for a brake. He told the aristocrats, What youdo to stop the bicycle is dash against a tree and hold onto thetree. Then the people who tried this method of course crashed, and they thought it was a really stupid way to stop a bicycle. They decided we have to somehow stop the bicycle frommoving in an easier way. So, they invented the brake for thebicycle.

Psychic TechnologyWe are continuing in the same line of development today.

We now have cellular phones that we can take anywhere, evento the bathroom! We have phones in the airplanes that we canuse. And, at some point, we are going to realize it is better topsychically communicate. Then we dont need a phone. Andwhat will transmit our voice is space. We are going to do itsometime. Why not do that right now?

In Atlantis, people were doing thatusing psychic commu-nication. But in our age, it is going to take time, because themodel that modern science follows is limited. Its very, verylimited. However, the people on this planet could make acollective decision to do things in an easier way!

In India all these various limitations were challenged many, many thousands of years ago by the yogis. They said all of thesethings, including the phenomenal world, are only a fabricationof your mind. What exists is your own mind.

Creations of the MindIf one has no mind, then nothing will be out there in the

world. Everything is created by the mind, including a physical

coming back and you want to return to Being. Then karmaends.

So karma is not just a metaphysical philosophy. It is real.Whatever you think becomes a reality in the invisible space-time complex of your soul, and then this manifests in life afteran appropriate lapse of time.

The Buddhists say that you cannot end karma until youbecome totally empty. When you are empty, there will be nomore movement; there will be no more desire. And when thereis no more desire, there is no possibility for life. Every one ofyou has come here to act out something in life. You came hereto become the president of the country or to be a homelessperson. You came here to marry someone or to divorce someoneelse. You came here to experience success or incredible pros-perity. Or, you came here to go through poverty and slavery.

Why Do You Do What You Do?I can understand people coming to live a prosperous life, but

who wants poverty? It is a learning process. On the earth-planeyou learn everything through trial and error. That is the struc-ture of human knowledge. You constantly go on makingmistakes. Why are you not able to make a perfect computer?Every year companies make imperfect computers knowingly, because there is no way they can make a perfect computer. Samething applies to life. You experiment with this man or woman, with this job or another, and then move on to get a new betterpartner or vocation.

Story of the Invention of the BicycleI often talk about an interesting anecdote as some people

find it easier to understand things through stories. One day Iwas watching a Disney movie for kids. The Disney movie wasnarrating the history of the invention of the bicycle. The movieexplained that when the bicycle was first invented in France, notvery many people could afford it. Only aristocrats could afford

  • In this experiment the cancer patients were told that they aregoing to receive chemotherapy, and the treatment may causeloss of hair. The doctors didnt administer chemotherapy, butinstead a placebo was given. Nevertheless, 35 percent of thepeople lost hair anyhow.

This led Cousins to make very serious objections aboutpreventative [measures]. We give some information to people tohelp prevent certain things from happening, but it may producea countereffect. An innocent woman who doesnt know aboutbreast cancer is told to examine her breasts periodicallywhoknows what is going to happen? Somebody is going to realizethat fear in a physical form.

Changeable vs Unchangeable KarmaNow I am going to confine my current discussion to one

area of karma, the karma which cannot be changed easily. Youhave certain givens [or conditions] in this life. For instance, Ihave brown skin. If I want to turn it into white skin, its notgoing to happen.

I might bleach myself and invite more problems. I haveselected certain situations in my life which are very, very diffi-cult to change. Thats why people come to me saying that theyhave wanted to change their life ten years ago, but day after daythey wake up to the same reality. They have not been able tomake changes in a significant way.

Why? It is because the givens are like water which hasbecome ice cubessolid matter. It is very difficult to changesolid matter. Everything starts out as energy and becomesmatter and when energy has become a material reality, thechanges are very, very difficult to make.

Im not saying that it is impossible. You can change thesethings. But, we have to operate with the fact that we are dealingwith matter-of-fact.

Matter is a fact. This is an area which is resistant to change

object like this. You have to have a mind which can hold thisobject as a thought in your brain. Look at sleep. When you aresleeping, nothing exists. Remember that during sleep, you arenot dead. The mind is dead. The mind is not there. So whenthe mind is not there, then everything disappears. In themorning, when the mind comes back, everything comes intoexistence.

So the mind creates. Nothing creates, but the mind. Wehave to understand the human mind. It creates throughthoughts, through understanding. Karma is also created throughthe mind. The mind creates psychic impressions that somehowstay in the cosmos, and then these impressions cause a person toreincarnate.

So we have to become very, very responsible in handling ourmind, because whatever we think is going to become a reality. As I said in the beginning, our life as it is now is a result of ourown thoughts in our past lives. We have to become very, verycareful about what we think, because what we think is going tomanifest as reality.

Thoughts Become BiologyI will give you a practical example. Norman Cousins was an

old acquaintance of mine. He wanted me to come and workwith him in UCLA on a project about psycho-neuroim-munology. What this high-sounding word means is that yourthoughts become your biology. He had a number of projects inthis country and also in Europe to discover how thoughts gettranslated into biological reality.

The major experiment he conducted was on cancer patientswith at least 500 people in each experimental group. This exper-iment was repeated both in Europe and in this country. Thesecancer patients were tested for a placebo effecthe wanted tosee how powerfully people translate a certain idea into biologicalrealities.

  • Someone has come with a mindset that he has taken birth todo certain things. No matter what you do to change him, he isnot going to change. This holds true for everyone. Everyone ofus is under a spell. We are unconscious. We are unconsciouslyled to the process of staying with a certain mindset because it isvery, very difficult to be alert and be otherwise.

It is easy to be a robot. That is how we live life. We are notconscious at all. The Buddha said that you consider yourself tobe in a waking state, but you are not. You are under a spell as ifyou are drugged. You follow the same path. You are incapable ofmaking changes. The mind thinks, I want to change my life. Iwant to change my car. I want to change my apartment. I wantto change my job. I want to manifest a good relationship.

You want it on a mental level, but then it is not happening. Why? Because of the spell. Because of the robot mind. Theinfluence of karma forces you to carry on with the misery. Youmust ponder this very soberly. Be sincere. Share this materialwith others who may be interested.

You have to become alert to the core. You have to createmore energy to diffuse the past life karma. When you becomealert, you begin to challenge reality, challenge karma. When youchallenge karma, you are not going to accept things as they are.Every minute you are going to be conscious. At no time are yougoing to be unconscious.

If you are unconscious, you are allowing things to happen. You are causing the karma to manifest. The moment youbecome alert, you challenge the cause of karma. So the way todiffuse karma is to become alert and not allow the robot tocontinue in its unconscious way.

We love to forget ourselves. We dont know that we are evenbreathing. Thats why the Buddha said breathe for an hour. Andhe said that while you are doing this exercise, you have to be soconscious that you should not miss even one breath. Becausethe breath and the mind are related processes.

because of its physicality. In Sanskrit they call it the most difficult karma to change,

prarabdha. Prarabdha is that which is going to be experiencedby you no matter what you do.

That is why when self-help people tell me that you createyour own reality, I tell them this is only true in a limited sense. There have been many self-help books, but how many peoplehave been able to turn their lives around? They have beenreading hundreds and hundreds of books on self-help which allsay you create your own reality and the sky is the limit.

How many of you have dramatically changed your lives? What is the percentage of people who have been able to changetheir lives? One percent? Two percent?. Ninety percent fail. This is what people have to look at

For most people, change has not happened yet. Day by daywe wake up to the same old reality. We get frustrated. Evenpeople who write books saying that you can do everything, theyget frustrated, too, although they may not acknowledge it!

Prarabdha: Difficult KarmaSo there is a reality that is very difficult to change,

prarabdha. These are the givens. And we created them. Andthese are what we need to diffuse. The diffusion cannot be doneby the mind. Thats the most important thing that we have tounderstand.

Mentally you can go on making affirmations, writing affir-mations, making promises that I wont repeat this; I willchange this; I wont repeat this behavior. But constantly youmake the mistake over and over again.

Why do we do that? Because of karma. Karma is the spell.Everyone is under a spell. In Sanskrit they have a word calledsamskara which means innate qualities or certain proclivitieswith which you are born. That is the karma from a previousbirth.

    36

  • relive all the karma that he had to pass through. And, in thatway, he emptied the karma.

Then, there was no more karma to emerge. That is why hesaid that total reality is emptiness. There is nothing out thereand in that emptiness you are full. Emptiness is not a negativequality. Emptiness is unlimited life in which you are notdefined. You are infinite. And that, he said, is the nature ofevery human being, to live without karma.

When you become more aware, you see into the limitedcircumstances that the mind both creates and makes real. Forexample, look at a six-year-old girlshe wants all kinds of toys. And what is your attitude toward the girl? Why does she wantall these toys? Why does she want chocolate all the time? But forthe kid, it is so real and so tempting.

The same analogy applies to grown-up people also. Theonly thing is that they like different toys. The toys are different. For the grown-ups, these toys are very real.

The Buddha was able to see that all these are games. Youhave to end playing these games at some point in your life. When you do that, you end karma. What can help you come tothis conclusion is more awareness. More awareness means moreintelligence.

The term Buddha means one who has accessed buddhi.Buddhi means Intelligence. It is not intelligence in the Westernpsychological sense. Intelligence is universal understanding inwhich you understand everything about yourself and about thecosmos.

From that perspective, everything seems to be a gameanillusion. One has to wake up to the reality which is infiniteintelligence. Intelligence is synonymous with awareness. Youhave to become aware.

You eat with awareness. You sleep with awareness. You study with awareness.

But the reality is you cannot put your mind on the breatheven for five minutes. If you successfully become aware of yourbreath for an hour, that will change your life entirely because bythat time you will have created enough energy, enough alertnessto diffuse karma.

Diffusing KarmaSo, what will diffuse karma is attention. If you are attentive,

then things cannot get overlooked. You can stop things byvirtue of your own attention. Why dont we have much atten-tion now? We are lazy. So, with attention, you can stop things. This is the law of nature. Attention means care. Attention andcare are synonymous. If you bring more attention, you bringmore care.

You dont care now. Mike Tyson has great muscles. You and Idont have these. Why? Did he care for his muscles? He did. Didyou care for your muscles? No. And how did he care for them? His whole life was the muscles.

So what you need is care, more attention. When you bringmore attention, then you become more alert. Then karma willstop. Karma stops because you are waking up to a differentdimension of existence where you are able to see the karmacoming forth, and then the attention burns off the karma.

This is how you avoid the dangers that are yet to come.Patanjali, the enlightened Indian yogi who compiled the YogaSutras, speaks about why one needs to meditate. He says youhave to meditate because you have to avoid the danger that hasnot yet come.

You have created enough dangers for several lifetimes. Theyare unfolding. This lifetime is not enough to live those events,so you are going to create other lives to enjoy it or suffer it. Sowhat you have to do is just meditate more.

By meditating you create more awareness. The Buddha satunder the bodhi tree before his enlightenment, and he began to

And he says, I had been happy if the general camp hadtasted her sweet body, so I had nothing known. So whatbothers him is not the actual act, but the knowledge that shehas slept with this man, which he does not know whether it istrue or not.

So, you have to step outside the thought process and for thatyou need awareness. And then you can check out what you cando and what you cannot do. Sometimes there will be an obsti-nate thought. By becoming more conscious you can stop theseprocesses and when you do that, you are diffusing karma. Youhave to learn to develop more consciousness within you.

There is a bodily awareness that you have to create, and thenawareness of the consciousness itself is another project. Whilesitting here, you can become conscious. Right now, you areunconscious. I can create consciousness in you provided I tellyou how to do it. Its a simple exercise. Try this right now.

The Buddhists believed inthis methodology because it agreed with their system in whichthere is no God and no soul. What exists is your own conscious-ness. You are not using your consciousness in the right way.

This is the Buddhist model. But I dont quite totallysubscribe to the Buddhist model. My own tradition is atradition that equally emphasizes changing the physical reality. My tradition is called the Tamil Siddha tradition. Its a traditionthat is not very well known.

You work with awareness. You play with awareness. You never lose your awareness no matter what you do. What

happens now is that your awareness is being eaten by your thoughtprocess. The thought process is like a vampire. It sucks up all ofyour energy and limits you. And you live a life as though there isno existence other than thought existence.

Thoughts are your guests. They check in and check out. Youare the host. No thought can remain within the system forever.Become alert. The thought will fall away like a dead leaf from atree. The moment you become aware and tell yourself, Thisthought is trying to cheat me and make me unhappy; I dismissyou, the thought will fall away.

If you give reality to a thought, that thought will give rise toanother thought and another thought and another. And, Oh,how he cheated me on this, and then you will begin to analyzeall the incidents trying to make up a case to make yourself moremiserable. You can become alert and dismiss the thought. Sometimes it is the knowledge that becomes the problem.Shakespeare had a great understanding about this. In his play,Othello, somebody came and told Othello that his wife,Desdemona, was having an affair with another guy, even thoughthis was not actually true. He successfully planted this suspicionin Othellos mind, and Othellos mind began to rage. Thiswoman is cheating me! And in the play he puts his hands onhis head to see if he has developed horns. The gesture is from abelief in ancient Greece that if your wife cheats on you, you willgrow horns. And he begins to analyze the situation. Hecontinues to analyze and analyze, and then he concludes, I amlike dust in the wind.

  • No doubt the mantras are tiny, often with only one or twosyllables. But, is it not true that the atoms, tiny as they are, carryenormous power? The mantras are called Bijas in Sanskrit whichmeans seeds. The seed carries the tree within itself.

I compare the mantras to DNA. Each DNA is a miniatureof a particular person. With the help of DNA you can identify aperson, and perhaps in the future, even clone the individual.Mantras are energy DNAs. You implant them in your mind, and then you manifest the energy.

How long does it take to get results from the use of mantras? It varies from person to person. Some people have gotten

results in days, and some take months. The bottom line is thatyou use the mantra until you get the results.

I am a very busy person. I dont have the time to sit and meditate. Isthere a mantra that I can practice in a few minutes?

There is a one minute meditation which is very powerful.See the One Minute Mantra in Part III.

Should I chant a mantra aloud or think it mentally?Mantras can be chanted as well as used mentally. When the

mind is noisy, use the verbal chanting method. When yourmind is quiet, use the mantra mentally. The thinking methodwill quiet the mind and will give you tranquility.

Will there be any bad results that may come out of the mantras? There are mantras to create bad effects like hurting others,

etc. Those mantras are excluded from this book. I have only putin benign ones.

I am Christian/Jew/Moslem. Will this practice of mantras interferewith my religion?

Mantras are areligious, although they were originally discov-ered by the yogis of India and have long been part of the Hindutradition. The practice of a mantra does not convert one toHinduism or interfere with your spirituality.

materially and spiritually. You have to challenge even yourmaterial reality and change it not for the next life, but right nowfor this life. So their philosophy is 200 percent life: 100 percentmaterial progress, 100 percent spiritual change. How can I change my karma?

The simple answer is: use a mantra.

Mantra: Magical Sound That Can Change Your LifeWhat is a mantra?

A mantra is a magical sound. It is a Divine tool to createwhatever you want to create.Who discovered the mantras?

The mantras are part of the space energy. (Space energy isone element among five, the others being earth, water, fire, air.)Meditating on the space energy, the ancient enlightened yogisdiscovered the sounds in deep states of trance, called Samadhi. How old are the mantras?

The mantras have no beginning nor an end. They are as oldas space and the universe. What is the oldest extant literature on the mantras?

The Vedas (Books of Knowledge) written in Sanskrit are theoldest texts on mantras. They may date back to 1500-1000 B.C.The Vedas talk about the use of mantras to get into nonordinarystates of consciousness and for obtaining spiritual as well asmaterial things. How do mantras work to get whatever you want to get?

Mantras are energy forms of matter. For instance, you wantto buy a house or a car. There is a specific energy form thatcontrols matter that gives you material comfort. In this case, Irecommend the use of the mantra Shreem. You go on usingthe mantra repeatedly. The mantra will then attract thecar/house towards you. It is magical. How can a small sound attract large things like cars/homes?

  • get dramatic results. You dont have to know many things. Transcendental

Meditation (TM) became popular in the United States becausethey use mantras. They dont want to waste your time giving abig intellectual seminar on creating your own reality or how themantras function.

All they say is: Come here, and I will give you a mantra, and it will change you. So the mantras have this ability becausethey work at a different level, not at the mind level.

If you try to change your consciousness at the mind level, the change will be very superficial because it cannot dispel thespell you are under. By clinging onto the mantra, you can gointo a deeper level and rearrange the atoms of your ownconsciousnessthe sound atoms of your own consciousness.

The mantras have also been part of the Biblical tradition aswell. The Bible says that, In the beginning was the Word, andthe Word was with God. God created everything through hisWord. The Word of God is the mantra.

Jesus speaks about the power of mantras on two occasions. At one time when asked to teach a prayer he teaches the prayerthat even today is used in some churches. In the prayer Jesussays, Father, hallowed be thy name. What is this name God?Gods name is everything. It represents pure energy.

If you ask for anything in Gods name, it will happenthrough the miraculous power of God. At the end, Jesus told hisfollowers to ask everything in his name. What is there in Jesusname? Jesus name is a mantra.

Similarly, Yahweh, the name of the Jewish God, is also amantra. Yahweh is formed of the sounds for space (akash) andair (vayu) energy, which according to the Hindu traditionbelong to the pure energy complex of the Divine. The soundsya and va representing space and air are part of the Nama Sivayamantra.

Similarly, Allah is a mantra as well. The Allah sound encom-

Mind is Composed of SoundsThe mind is a bunch of sounds. This is the theory of the

Siddhas. What do the Siddhas mean by this? Your mind is made up

of language. Ninety percent of your mind is language. If youpull out language from the mind, the mind would not exist.

Then, what is language? Language is soundconceptualsound and meaning in some relationship of reference. Now,what is sound? Sound is just a bunch of vowels and consonants. So if you understand vowels and consonants, you have under-stood part of your mind.

So, if you want to change your mind, change the sounds inyour consciousness. Your mind has a sound pattern. Yourunconscious has a sound pattern. Even your soul belongs tosome vowel or consonant group.

John Edwards, the TV psychic who reads spirits messages, uses this knowledge. Nadi astrology of the Siddhas also uses thesound techniques to identify souls.

Consciousness itself is sound. So if you change soundswithin the system, then you can make lasting changes in yourlife. All that you need to do is to change the sounds of yourconsciousness at a very deep level.

When the yogis talk about sounds, they dont talk aboutonly the spoken sounds. Spoken sounds are only very grossform of sounds. Spoken sounds emerge from unmanifest levels.

The evolution of speech is as follows: first, there is a thoughtsound (thought also has a sound) called nada and paranada. The thought sounds become speech sounds.

In order to make significant changes in your life, all that youneed to do is to rearrange the sound patterns of your ownconsciousness. This is what mantras do.

Mantras are sounds of the unconscious. While you are medi-tating on the mantra, the mantra takes you very deep into thelayers of the unconscious. Thats why people who use mantras

Flowers, candles, incense can greatly help focus the mind formeditation and spiritual practice. Spiritual statues or pictures ofsome deity or enlightened teacher who inspires you can be goodto put in your meditation spot.

To end your meditation or spiritual practice, bringing yourhands together and bowing is an ancient way to seal the medita-tion and to offer gratitude to the Divine. This gesture of bowingbrings in humility and prevents you from becoming proud ofyour practice.

Siddhi ConsciousnessWhen one is able to live the Siddhi consciousness

completely just as God does, then creation takes placeinstantaneously. As soon as a thought is produced within theSiddhi consciousness it gets materialized. There is no time lag.No action is needed to make the thought into a physical reality.

This is Siddhi. It is a great achievement. And this is the idealof the Siddhas, that everyone should be able to live the Siddhiconsciousness. The problem is we have manifested a mind, andthe mind is the barrier.

The mind hides the vision of the Siddhi consciousness.Somehow we have to find a way to get beyond the mind and goto this Siddhi consciousness.

I am giving you many tools in this book to help you do this, because now is the time for the spiritual seekers to get a break!Use them wisely to benefit yourself and others. I am serving agreat brunch of knowledge and like a brunch, you will fill up onsome things and not on others. Each of you will pick the partsthat are right for you to work with now. I trust your intuitionabout this, plus I will help you with this inwardly. Many of youwill experience this help in the dream plane, some consciously, some unconsciously. This is a multi-level teaching that I amopening up. I invite you to come back to this book again andagain, as you cannot possibly absorb it all in one reading!

Some basic preparation advice: Whenever possible, meditateor do other spiritual practice in a clean spot, and take a showeror at least wash your face and hands, and wear clean clothes.Purity is essential for accessing light. If you do not have a medi-tation spot already set up in your home, you may find it veryhelpful to do this. Pick a spot that is quiet and where you willnot be interrupted. • Chapter 1Physical Appearance

    and Personality

    Mantra: Satyam Sivam Sundaram(Pronounced: Saht-Yahm She-vam Sun-da-rum)

I n this chapter, we are just going to look at ourselves.Very, very few people actually look at themselves.Sure, they look at others always, but seldom them-selves. This is because the physical eyes are turnedonly towards others; not towards oneself! If you want to seeyourself, you have to go in front of the mirror and create theother. And only through that mirror can you see yourself.Even in the mirror you are seeing only a reflection of yourself, not your real self.

So, self-examination is not naturally available to us. We haveto do it through conscious awareness. Very few people have eventhe practice of looking at themselves in the mirror. It is animportant practice that everyone should do. You should go andlook in the mirror and see how you look. Then you will figureout the imperfections you have created.

Awareness is the first step. Once you have become aware ofimperfections then you can correct yourself. This happens attwo levels: at the body level, and at the mind level. You have tolook at your own physical form first, and you will begin to takenote of the imperfections that you have created.

You look exactly the way you want to look. Now you maynot like to hear that, but at the time you created it, it was your

  • should desire for the best in every area of your life. For example,if you want a skin cream, go for the best quality.

The purpose of this book is to encourage you to becomeconscious in every area of your life. The remedial sounds that Iwill teach you are the crux of the teaching.

Beauty is TruthBeauty, inner and outer, is the best asset you have. Beauty is

Truth, Truth Beauty, John Keats wrote in his poem, Ode on aGrecian Urn. He was a British poet who was influenced byPlato. The poem continues, that is all/ye know on earth, andall ye need to know.

If you think about something all the time, then you will beable to bring that thing into your life. This is the truth. In orderto think about something consistently for a long period of timedoesnt require any money; it only requires motivation. But as Isaid, the motivation will be blocked by your karma. Karma willnot allow any change to happen easily. To overcome Karma, youonly need the commitment that no matter what, you are goingto focus attention on the imperfect parts of your body. It will bepainful in the beginning because nobody wants to look at theirown imperfections, but then you cannot keep things hiddenforever.

In this chapter, you are going to look at your own physicalappearance and personality.

First, you look at the imperfections; and then on a mentallevel, make the changes you want and put these ideas out to theuniverse.

The universe will then help you to manifest your desires. This is for manifestations on the level of the body.

Beauty and SpiritualityYou might ask what does beauty have to do with spirituality?

Your body and personality set the tone for every area of yourlife. A pleasing personality and appearance will open doors for

    51

Section IIPersonal Transformation ProgramChapter I: Physical Appearance and Personality

intention to look how you look now. How can you correct this? You can correct this through awareness. Put your attention onhow these imperfections have affected various parts of yourbody. Notice how you have created diseases and other abnormalconditions. The moment you begin to reflect on it, then youcreate a change already within you. Once you have set thesethings in motion, eventually, over a period of time, you will finda means of rectifying them.

Put Your Attention on What You WantOnce a woman came to me. She had no resources to correct

some imperfections on her nose. She told me that she knewexactly what could be done; all that was needed was plasticsurgery on the nose but it was very expensive. I told her to justput the desire out, and then it will manifest. Dont even askwhere the money is going to come from because that will stopmanifesting the money that is needed to do this surgery. Whatyou should be concerned about is: Yes, I do have this imperfec-tion and I need to correct it. You just close your eyes and putyour attention on what you need to do. Then you will findmiracles happening.

Now, there are many negative forces that will try to keep youfrom doing this. You will fall a victim to unconsciousness. Onlyvery few people remain conscious. Many, many people areunconscious. Because they are unconscious, they are not able tobring about any significant changes in their lives.

Sometimes we deny certain parts of ourselves. The denialleads to negligence. We keep it under the rug and we dont wantto talk about it. This leads to neglect. We become irritated whensomeone talks about it. People get angry because they dontwant to have to look at certain parts of themselves.

You have to admit you are wrong. Ask yourself, What can Ido to get myself straight here? There should be a willingness tolook at yourself and change what needs to be changed. You

  • slim and very, very beautiful, but act as though they have a lowself-esteem. So, it is important for a person to think and feelthat they are attractive regardless of what they do or how muchmoney they make. It is not just in thinking but rather feeling itin their bones that is important.

Now, what about your personality? Your personality is an intrinsicquality with which you are born. Physically, one may be attractive/unattractive/average/tall/short/medium. Also, behaviorally, one maybe well-mannered/short-tempered/cold/warm/mean/generous.Your life may go smoothly or may be full of problems.Unpleasant expressions and experiences of your personality aredue to bad karmic impressions in the body/mind and spirit.Again, take note of what you want to change.

Personality is not just expressed through a physical appear-ance or manners, but also through your own psychologicalconcept of who you are. The truth is, you are God. But thenyou have, through an ego identity, created a lot of restrictions. You have allowed yourself to be defined by your education, yourprofession or what you currently do for a living or even whetheror not you have a job. This is not really your personality. Yourvocation is not really what you are. You are beyond all that youdo. You are God. The moment you understand that you areGod, you have will incredible self-esteem and changes willfollow automatically.

Visualizing MeditationNow I am going to guide you through a personality change

meditation. [This format should be referred to for visualizationsand preparations for meditation.]

Sit quietly. Picture a beam of white light entering into yourright eye, completely flooding through every cell with an ener-gizing, healing light. Let the light go all the way in, all the wayback into the optic nerve. Receive this light completely.

you in areas of relationship, career, and your own well-being.They influence the impact you have in the world.

Unfortunately, many times, women in particular do nothave the right attitude about their appearance because of variousconditionings. They say that they are not very attractive deepdown, and once they think that they are not attractive, thenthey are not going to attract. So it is important for every womanto think and feel, I am attractive, because once you think thatyou are attractive then you can attract.

I can think of two women at least who became successfulnational figures who believed they were attractive even thoughthey did not look like magazine models. One is Oprah Winfrey.I think shes great. However, when Oprah Winfrey started outand became successful she was not attractive at all. She weighedas much as Mike Tyson, yet the weight was not a problem;because though she was overweight, she was still very popularand she received numerous awards when she was very heavy.

Later on, of course, she took control of her weight throughdiscipline and exercise and so forth. But my point is, irrespec-tive of her weight, she was successful because she thought thatshe was attractive. To think that you are attractive is the ulti-mate thing. Once you think that way about yourself deep down, your external appearancewhatever it isis not important, forthen you are going to attract no matter what.

The other woman I have in mind is Rosie ODonnell. Shealso has a weight problem, but she, too, is the kind of personwho thinks that she is very attractive. That is why she was ableto attract a huge national following. People love her. So, it is amatter of convincing yourself that you are attractive.

Creating an Attractive Personality is the SecretIf you want to attract people, this is very, very important.

Conversely, I must also acknowledge that there are a number ofwomen whom I have met who work in restaurants who are very

Now go to your own body. Focus attention, particularly onthe imperfections that you have created. Start from the headand work to the toes. Make note of them one by one. Nowchant this sound. Receive the sound waves. These sound waveswill go and impact every cell in your body: Satyam SivamSundaram.

Relax. Keep this sound, Satyam Sivam Sundaram, in yourconsciousness. Chant the mantra, Satyam Sivam Sundaram intoeach part for a few seconds:

Go back into each part again and this time say the soundsilently, on the inner level, bringing the sound waves into asubtler level of your cells. Visualize the changes you want tomanifest. Be very positive in your visualization. As you do thismeditation regularly, you will find miracles happening.

The sound waves of the mantras travel to the inner spacewhere energy and matter collapse into one unit. You must begung-ho with the chants. Make a serious commitment to workwith them. Discipline yourself to some form of daily practice.

Close your session with the chant Om Shanti, Shanti, Shanti, bring your hands together and bow with gratitude. (OmShanti, Shanti, Shanti is an ancient chant for peace.)

Go to the left nostril. Receive a beam of white light intoyour left nostril, energizing and refreshing each cell, going allthe way into the left nasal passageway. Receive this lightcompletely.

Next, go to the mouth. Receive a beam of white light intoyour mouth, going into each cell of your mouth. Receive it firstinto the tip of the tongue, then the middle of the tongue, finallythe back of the tongue and tonsil area. Receive this lightcompletely.

    Mantra: Satyam Sivam Sundaram(Pronounced: Saht-Yahm She-vam Sun-da-rum)

In addition to receiving the white light, the most importanttool in this area is a mantra that will help change your personality. The mantra is Sundaram.

Sundaram is a concept beyond description. It is going to cre-ate joy. It is going to create a beautiful form, both on the level ofthe mind and the level of the body. You just keep on chantingthis sound, so that the
