A team of PDD officials headed by Executive Engineer PDD Kangan, Ajaz Ahmad Bhat, raided various busi- ness establishments, shops and residential houses here and seized dozens of electric appliances including boilers. “The drive against the vio- lators will continue in future also. We appeal locals to use electricity in legal way and avoid hooking and other illegal means of using electricity. Oth- erwise strict action will be taken against them under law,” said Basharat Ahmad a senior officer of PDD in Kangan. Unattended garbage irks Bandipora residents Government committed to dignified return of Kashmiri migrants: Kichloo GK NEWS NETWORK Srinagar, Jan 16: The Direc- tor General (DG) Border Roads (BR) Lt General, AT Parnaik, on Thursday said Jawahar tunnel connecting Kashmir with Jammu will be modernized. In view of recent snow- fall, Lt General Parnaik today visited Jawahar Tunnel on the Srinagar-Jammu high- way and reviewed its secu- rity and safety measures. Chairing a meeting there Lt General Parnaik said Jawa- har Tunnel is the life line of the Jammu and Kashmir. “All possible measures are being taken for its maintenance and upkeep. Security, safety, surveillance and mobility gad- gets are being installed in the tunnel to make it safer for the road users,” he said. Chief Engineer Project Beacon, Brig R K Sharma briefed the Lt General with respect to the maintenance strategy being followed and required advance technol- ogy in the modernization of the tunnel. On the construction of Zozila tunnel, Lt General Parnaik said that the matter is with the State Government for issuing of forest and envi- ronmental clearances. “And once the process is completed by the State Government, fur- ther action will be initiated for construction of this 14 kilometer tunnel which shall be connecting Ladakh region with the rest of the country,” he said. He said that the road connectivity on all the snow bound areas especially Zozila will be carried out with better equipments and trained BRO personnel saying this will help to keep the road open for longer period. “J&K is having unique topography, mostly moun- tainous, with climate dif- fering from other areas. During winter, the chal- lenges posed by the snow- fall on the working of the BRO personnel is different in nature. BRO personnel working in needs expertise to handle the situation,” he said. He expressed satisfac- tion over the performance of the Project Beacon in the “critical and challenging circumstances.” Municipal Committee In Slumber MIR TARIQ Bandipora, Jan 16: In blatant violation of the Environment Protection Act, the Bandipora Munici- pal Committee (BMC) has been unscientifically dumping garbage at Nusoo village on the town out- skirts here. The committee collects over 40 tons of garbage from 17 wards and directly dumps it on a road connect- ing main town. The locals are up in arms against the BMC for unscientifically dumping garbage here. “Heaps of garbage has become a breeding ground for stray dogs and poses high risk of outbreak of an epidemic,” said a local Muhammad Afzal Bhat. Sources said despite getting approval, the BMC has failed to construct a plant for scientific disposal of the garbage. Executive Officer BMC Bandipora, Mush- taq Ahmed said about 70 Kanals of land have been acquired at Zalwan for dumping garbage. “We have stopped to dump garbage at Nusoo village and will clear any leftover waste there,” the EO said. All the necessary measures will be taken to build sense of con- fidence among migrants before they are properly rehabilitated in the Valley so that they are able to live with their Muslim broth- ers,” Kichloo said speak- ing to a delegation of J&K National Conference Minor- ity Cell here. He said Pandits are the part and parcel of rich cul- ture and ethos of Kashmir. The conception of Kash- miryat is incomplete with- out existing of Kashmiri Migrants in Kashmir Valley known as the land of sufis and saints,” he said. The delegation of migrants comprising Ex MLC, Bushan Lal Bhat, Pres- ident of the J&K National Conference Minority Cell, M.K. Yogi and General Sec- retary. Karan Choudhary presented memorandum of demands and discussed their problems with the Minister. The main demands pro- jected by the delegation included political empow- erment of the Pandit Com- munity by reserving two seats in the J&K State Leg- islature. They also sought to update the voter list of migrants, enhancement of cash relief upto Rs.10,000 and special recruitment drive for migrant youth in J&K Police..
