A New Number inRetirement PlanningContent developed by CUNA Brokerage

Vice President, Wealth Management

There are several magical numberswhen planning for retirement. At age59½ you can tap your qualified retire-ment plans without penalty. At age 62,you can claim early Social Security ben-efits. At age 65, you’re eligible forMedicare. At 63½, you can retire early and con-

tinue in your employer’s health insur-ance plan under COBRA until you’reeligible for Medicare. COBRA allowsworkers to continue coverage undertheir employer’s health insurance planfor 18 months after ending employment.Health care costs are on the rise.

From 2000 to 2006, the average family’shealth insurance premium rose 80%.According to the Kaiser Family Founda-tion, healthcare costs have been rising8% annually for the past three years*.What to do? If you’re planning to

retire before age 65, here are somestrategies to manage the cost of healthcare and health care insurance.Stay healthy. Use COBRA if avail-

able to you. Remain employed in orderto maintain your health insurance.Work part-time for a company thatoffers health insurance to part-timeemployees.Consider a high deductible, low pre-

mium health insurance plan.Part of a sound retirement plan.

When working with your financial advi-sor on your retirement plans, make sureto explore all of your options for remain-ing healthy and insured in retirement.*Medical Expenditure Panel Survey (MEPS), con-ducted by the Agency for Health Care Research andQuality, U.S. Department of Health and Human Ser-vices, 2007.

For years, Better Business Bureauhas educated consumers about notgiving out personal information overthe telephone or to anyone who showsup at their front door. With the U.S.Census process beginning, BBBadvises people to be cooperative, butcautious, so as not to become a victimof fraud or identity theft. The first phase of the 2010 U.S.Census is under way as workers havebegun verifying the addresses ofhouseholds across the country. Even-tually, more than 140,000 U.S. Cen-sus workers will count every person inthe United States and will gatherinformation about every person livingat each address including name, age, gender, race and other relevant data. Most people are rightfully cautiousand won’t give out personal informa-tion to unsolicited phone callers or vis-itors, however the Census is anexception to the rule. Unfortunately, scammers know that the public ismore willing to share personal datawhen taking part in the Census andthey have an opportunity to ply theirtrade by posing as a governmentemployee and soliciting sensitivefinancial information. The Census data will be used to allocate more than $300 billion in federal funds every year, as well

as determine a State’s num-ber of Congressional repre-sentatives. Households areactually required by law to respond to the CensusBureau’s request for infor-mation. During the U.S. Census, households will be con-tacted by mail, telephone orvisited by a U.S. Censusworker who will inquire about thenumber of people living in the house.Unfortunately, people may also becontacted by scammers, who imper-sonate Census workers to get accessto banking and financial information.Law enforcement in several stateshave issued warnings that scammersare already posing as Census Bureauemployees and knocking on doorsasking for donations and Social Secu-rity numbers. The big question is - how do youtell the difference between a U.S.Census worker and a con artist?BBB offers the following advice:• If a U.S. Census worker knocks onyour door, they will have a badge, ahandheld device, a Census Bureaucanvas bag and a confidentialitynotice. Ask to see their identificationand their badge before answering theirquestions. However, you should never

invite anyone you don’t know into yourhome. • Census workers are currently onlyknocking on doors to verify addressinformation. Do not give your SocialSecurity number, credit card or bank-ing information to anyone, even if theyclaim they need it for the U.S. Cen-sus. Census workers will not ask forbanking and financial information norwill they solicit donations. • Eventually, Census workers maycontact you by telephone, mail or inperson at home. However, they willnot contact you by e-mail, so be onthe look out for e-mail scams imper-sonating the Census. Never click on alink or open any attachments in an e-mail that are supposedly from the U.S.Census Bureau. For more advice on avoiding identitytheft and fraud, visit www.bbb.org.

Requirements for PassportsAll travelers to and from the Caribbean, Bermuda, Panama, Mexico, and Canada are required tohave a passport or other secure, accepted document to enter or re-enter the United States. Underthe Intelligence Reform and Terrorism Prevention Act of 2004, this requirement includes allland border crossings, air and sea travel.

Beware: Timeshare ScamsBe suspicious of timeshare sales pitches that offer incentives

for attending the sales presentation. Many use high-pressure sales tactics anddon’t deliver the prizes they promise. One such scam promised everyone whoattended a new sports boat, all they had to do was pay for delivery. The boat turned out to be a toy, and the company kept the delivery fees. Be sure you can afford it before you buy timeshares that may be difficult to sell.

Checked-Bag ChargesSome airlines may charge you a fee for checking your first and/or second bag. To

avoid unpleasant surprises, see the individual airline’s policyfor checked baggage before you buy your ticket.

Stay Informed: Travel SafeSeveral federal agencies offer advice and information onthe internet that can help you have a safe trip. For adviceon airline, highway, and rail safety information check out the U.S. Department of Trans-portation at www.dot.gov. as determine a State’s num-ber of Congressional repre-sentatives.

Look up crash-safety reports on cars or find out how weatheris affecting air travel and road conditions.
