From the Whimsy Basics - Cheddar (R), cut:• (1) 2” x WOF strip. Sub-cut (4) 2” squares.

From the Whimsy Basics - Taupe (S), cut:• (1) 2” x WOF strip. Sub-cut (8) 2” x 4 ½” strips.

Sewing Instructions1. Sew (1) 1 ½” x 5 ½” Fabric C strip to each side of (1) 5 ½” Fabric B block. Sew (1) 1 ½” x 7 ½” Fabric B strip to the top and to the bottom of the Fabric B block. Trim the block to measure 6 ½” square to make (1) Block One square (Fig. 1). Repeat to make (20) Block One squares total.

2. Place (1) 2 ⅜” Fabric G square on top of (1) 2 ⅜” Fabric E square, right sides together. Draw a line across the diagonal of the top square (Fig. 2). Sew ¼” away from each side of the drawn diagonal line (Fig. 2). Cut the (2) squares apart on the drawn diagonal line (Fig. 3) to make (2) half-square triangles. Trim the blocks to measure 2” square to make (2) Unit 1 blocks (Fig. 4). Repeat to make (24) Unit 1 blocks total.

3. Repeat Step 2 using (24) 2 ⅜” Fabric G squares and (24) 2 ⅜” Fabric F squares to make (48) 2” Unit 2 blocks (Fig. 5).

4. Sew (2) Unit 2 blocks together with the Fabric F side touching to make (1) Unit 3 strip (Fig. 6). Repeat to make (24) Unit 3 strips total.

5. Sew (1) Unit 3 strip to each side of (1) 3 ½” Fabric D square. Sew (1) Unit 1 block to each end of (1) Unit 3 strip. Repeat to make a second strip. Sew the strips to the top and to the bottom of the Fabric D strip to make (1) Block Two square (Fig. 7). Pay attention to the orientation of the blocks and strips. Repeat to make (6) Block Two squares total.

6. Place (1) 2” Fabric I square on the left side of (1) 2” x 3 ½” Fabric D strip, right sides together (Fig. 8). Sew across the diagonal of the square from the upper right corner to the lower left corner (Fig. 8). Flip open the triangle formed and press (Fig. 9). Trim away the excess fabric from behind the triangle, leaving a ¼” seam allowance.

7. Place another 2” Fabric I square on the right side of the 2” x 3 ½” Fabric D strip, right sides together (Fig. 10). Sew across the diagonal of the square from the upper left corner to the lower right corner (Fig. 10). Flip open the triangle formed and press. Trim away the excess fabric from behind the triangle, leaving a ¼” seam allowance to make (1) Unit 4 strip (Fig. 11).

8. Repeat Steps 6-7 to make (16) Unit 4 strips total.

9. Sew (1) Unit 4 strip to each side of (1) 3 ½” Fabric H square. Sew (1) 2” Fabric D square to each end of (1) Unit 4 strip. Repeat to make a second strip. 10. Repeat Steps 6-7 using (24) 1 ½” x 2 ½” Fabric L strips and (48) 1 ½” Fabric K squares to make (24) Unit 5 strips (Fig. 13).

11. Repeat Steps 6-7 using (24) 1 ½” x 2 ½” Fabric M strips, (24) 1 ½” Fabric K squares and (24) 1 ½” Fabric L squares to make (24) Unit 6 strips (Fig. 14).

12. Repeat Steps 6-7 using (24) 1 ½” x 2 ½” Fabric M strips, (24) 1 ½” Fabric L squares and (24) 1 ½” Fabric K squares to make (24) Unit 7 strips (Fig. 15).

13. Sew (1) Unit 5 strip to each side of (1) 2 ½” Fabric J square. Sew (1) 1 ½” Fabric J square to each end of (1) Unit 5 strip. Repeat to make a second strip. Sew the strips to the top and to the bottom of the Fabric J strip to make (1) Unit 8 block (Fig. 16). Pay attention to the orientation of the strips. Repeat to make (6) Unit 8 blocks total.

15. Sew (1) Side Strip to each side of (1) Unit 8 block. Sew (1) 1 ½” Fabric J square to each end of (1) Side Strip. Repeat to make a second strip. Sew the strips to the top and to the bottom of the Unit 8 block to make (1) Block Four square (Fig. 17). Pay attention to the orientation of the strips. Repeat to make (6) Block Four squares total.

14. Sew (1) Unit 7 strip to the left end of (1) Unit 6 strip with the Fabric L ends touching to make (1) Side Strip. Repeat to make (24) Side Strips total.

16. Place (1) 1 ½” Fabric O square on the top left corner of (1) 2 ½” Fabric F square, right sides together (Fig. 18). Sew across the diagonal of the smaller square from the upper right corner to the lower left corner (Fig. 18). Flip open the triangle formed and press. Trim away the excess fabric from behind the triangle ¼” away from the sewn seam to make (1) Unit 9 block (Fig. 19). Repeat to make (16) Unit 9 blocks total.

17. Sew (1) Fabric J triangle, (1) Fabric F triangle and (1) Fabric O triangle together to make (1) Unit 10 block (Fig. 20). Repeat to make (16) Unit 10 blocks total.

18. Sew (1) Unit 9 block to each side of (1) Unit 10 block to make the top row. Repeat to make the bottom row. Sew (1) Unit 10 block to each side of (1) 2 ½” Fabric N square to make the middle row. Sew the (3) rows together to make (1) Block Five square. Pay attention to the orientation of the blocks. Repeat to make (4) Block Five squares total.

19. Sew (1) 2” Fabric P square to the top of (1) 2” Fabric G square. Sew (1) 2” x 3 ½” Fabric G strip to the right side of the new strip lengthwise to make (1) Unit 11 block (Fig. 22). Repeat to make (6) Unit 11 blocks total.

20. Sew (1) 2” Fabric P square to the left side of (1) 2” Fabric G square. Sew (1) 2” x 3 ½” Fabric G strip to the bottom of the new strip lengthwise to make (1) Unit 12 block (Fig. 23). Repeat to make (6) Unit 12 blocks total.

21. Repeat Steps 6-7 using (32) 1 ¼” x 2” Fabric Q strips and (64) 1 ¼” Fabric P squares to make (32) Unit 13 strips (Fig. 24).

22. Sew (1) Unit 13 strip to each side of (1) 2” Fabric P square. Sew (1) 1 ¼” Fabric Q square to each end of (1) Unit 13 strip. Repeat to make a second strip. Sew the strips to the top and to the bottom of the Fabric P strip to make (1) Unit 14 block (Fig. 25). Pay attention to the orientation of the strips. Repeat to make (8) Unit 14 blocks total.

23. Sew (1) Unit 14 block to the left side of (1) Unit 11 block to make the top row. Sew (1) Unit 12 block to the left side of (1) 3 ½” Fabric G square to make the bottom row. Sew the (2) rows together lengthwise to make (1) Block Six square (Fig. 26). Repeat to make (4) Block Six squares total.

24. Sew (1) 2” Fabric P square to the top of (1) 2” Fabric G square to make (1) Unit 15 strip (Fig. 27). Repeat to make (4) Unit 15 blocks total.

25. Sew (1) Unit 15 strip to the right side of (1) Unit 14 block lengthwise to make (1) Block Seven rectangle (Fig. 28). Repeat to make a second Block Seven rectangle.

26. Sew (1) Unit 15 strip to the left side of (1) Unit 14 block lengthwise to make (1) Block Eight rectangle (Fig. 29). Repeat to make a second Block Eight rectangle.

27. Follow Figure 30 and sew (14) assorted 2” x 4 ½” strips together end to end to make (1) Side Border. Repeat to make a second Side Border.

28. Follow Figure 31 and sew (14) assorted 2” x 4 ½” strips together end to end. Sew (1) 2” Fabric R square to each end of the sewn strip to make (1) Top/Bottom Border. Repeat to make a second Top/Bottom Border.

30. Sew (1) Unit 11 block to the top of (1) 3 ½” x 18 ½” Fabric G strip. Sew (1) Unit 12 block to the bottom of the Fabric G strip. Sew the new strip to the left side of the Center Block.

31. Sew (1) Unit 12 block to the top of (1) 3 ½” x 18 ½” Fabric G strip. Sew (1) Unit 11 block to the bottom of the Fabric G strip. Sew the new strip to the right side of the Center Block.

32. Sew (1) Unit 7 block to the left end of (1) 3 ½” x 33 ½” Fabric G strip. Sew (1) Unit 8 block to the right end of the Fabric G strip. Sew the new strip to the top of the Center Block.

33. Sew (1) Unit 8 block to the left end of (1) 3 ½” x 33 ½” Fabric G strip. Sew (1) Unit 7 block to the right end of the Fabric G strip. Sew the new strip to the bottom of the Center Block.

34. Sew (1) Block One square to the top and to the bottom of (1) Block Two square. Sew (1) Block Five square to the top and to the bottom of the new strip. Repeat to make a second strip. Sew (1) strip to each side of the Center Block.

35. Sew (1) Block Six square to each side of (1) 6 ½” Fabric G square. Sew (1) Block One square to each end of the new strip. Sew (1) Block Four square to each end of the new strip. Sew (1) Block One square to each end of the new strip. Repeat to make a second strip. Sew the strips to the top and to the bottom of the Center Block. Pay attention to the orientation of the blocks and strips.

36. Sew (1) Block One square to each side of (1) Block Four square. Sew (1) Block Three square to each end of the new strip. Sew (1) Block One square to each end of the new strip. Sew (1) Block Two square to each end of the new strip. Repeat to make a second strip. Sew the strips to the top and to the bottom of the Center Block. Pay attention to the orientation of the blocks and strips.

37. Sew (1) 1 ½” x 54 ½” Fabric Q strip to each side of the Center Block. Sew (1) 1 ½” x 56 ½” Fabric Q strip to the top and to the bottom of the Center Block.

38. Sew (1) Side Border (from Step 27) to each side of the Center Block. Sew (1) Top/Bottom Border (from Step 28) to the top and to the bottom of the Center Block.

39. Sew (1) 5 ½” x 59 ½” Fabric T strip to each side of the Center Block. Sew (1) 5 ½” Fabric D square to each end of (1) 5 ½” x 59 ½” Fabric T strip. Repeat to make a second strip. Sew the strips to the top and to the bottom of the Center Block to make the quilt top.

40. Layer and quilt as desired.

41. Sew the (7) 2 ½” x WOF Fabric T strips together, end to end with 45-degree seams, to make the binding. Fold this long strip in half lengthwise with wrong sides together and press.

42. Bind as desired.
