I was honored and excited to go down for this solemn occasion, as I had a lot of respect for my uncle. He was much like my father, a man of tremen- dous faith. He even named his five daughters after our Blessed Mother; so the Five Maryslived their lives through their middle names. I arrived in Charlotte on time to make my connecting flight to Ft. Myers only to hear the words over the P.A. system that we never want to hear... Flight ??? has been delayed two hours due to weather. After an additional delay, they announced the bad news that our flight had been cancelled. Unfortunately, there were hundreds of cancellations that day which made it impossible to find a flight into Ft Myers until morning, and those ar- rived too late for me to make it to the church on time. I was not going to be able to join my family for this funeral mass. I quickly called the church to inform them of our need of a priest to fill-in for me, which they were able to do. While this is a sad story, I actually found a tremendous amount of peace come over me knowing that my uncle was presented to the Lord, and prayed for, at the Holy Sac- rifice of the Mass, thanks to a servant priest who was hap- py to help out. You see, while I was honored to serve God, my uncle, and his people as their priest, what is really most important for us to remember is that Jesus is present, as he always is, in such an intimate way at mass. This isnt a sto- ry about me, but about Jesus Christ who is always present to us, even in the most difficult of circumstances. When we put God at the center of our life, there is always a peace that comes with him. This is the 29th Sunday in Ordinary time and Jesus in- forms us this week that “…whoever wishes to be firstwill be the slave of all. For the Son of Man did not come to be served but to serve and to give his life as a ransom for many." What an amazing gift we have received from Christ! Jesus continues to serve us, so lets make a con- certed effort to love and serve him back. Have a blessed week! Fr. Mark

Last Friday I boarded a plane to Naples, Florida to preside at my uncle’s funeral mass. I was honored and excited to go down for this solemn occasion, as I had a lot of respect for my uncle. He was much like my father, a man of tremen-dous faith. He even named his five daughters after our Blessed Mother; so the “Five Marys” lived their lives through their middle names. I arrived in Charlotte on time to make my connecting flight to Ft. FIRST READING Isaiah speaks of our redemption through the suffering of the Lord’s serv-ant. When have you experienced God’s presence in your suffering? SECOND READING Hebrews tells us that Jesus is able to sympathize with our weaknesses because he, too, “has been tested in every way.” What are some ways that you are tested in life? GOSPEL READING Jesus uses the request of James and John as a teachable moment for his disciples on the importance of humility and service to others. What other qualities do you think are necessary for true discipleship?

WORSHIP AND MEDITATION

“What do you wish me to do for you?” This is a ques-tion God is always asking. It’s an important question because the answer we provide will reveal a great deal about where our hearts lie. Our prayers can consist of requests for heal-ing, successful resolution of a personal conflict, assistance in overcoming a disease and myriad other desires for both ourselves and oth-ers. We are concerned about those we love and can easily find ourselves bringing their struggles to God in our prayer.

Is that really all that prayer is about? The woman in to-day’s Gospel was only looking out for the wellbe-ing of her sons. But her re-quest was not granted. We all make this same mistake from time to time. The goal of prayer is not to convince God of the worthiness of our agenda. Sometimes we believe that the more we multiply our prayers that we will receive more of God’s attention. That’s not how it works. Even though God desires to hear, know, and be an intimate part us, it goes much deeper.

What we need from God is a relationship. This rela-tionship sees God’s king-dom and agenda, not our own, as what is most im-portant. It brings God’s Gospel into a world that may not receive it with open arms. We are asked to journey with God through suffering, hard-ship, ridicule, and even death! Ultimately, our de-sire from God must be-come our desire for God. It is only when this happens that the powerful words “thy will be done” will be found with sincerity on our lips. Our humble lives will then become powerful wit-nesses, and what happens to us in God’s eternal king-dom the result of his mer-cy. We become true serv-ants and find ourselves discovering God’s defini-tion of success. That defini-tion has nothing at all to do with status, income, or privilege. ©LPi
