Psalm — Praise the Lord, who heals the brokenhearted (Psalm 147). Second Reading — Woe to me if I do not preach the gospel. I have become all things to all, to save at least some (1 Corinthians 9:16- 19, 22-23). Gospel — Jesus cured many who were sick with various diseases (Mark 1:29 -39). THE GOOD NEWS Today’s readings begin with a few verses from the book of Job. First, Job complains that his nights drag on endlessly. Then, worse yet, “My days are swifter than a weaver’s shut- tle; / they come to an end without hope” (Job 7:6). Not exactly encouraging, these lamentations, not when taken alone. Most of us have been there, though, and the antidote is the “good news” that Paul found so compelling that “an obligation has been imposed on me, and woe to me if I do not preach it!” (1 Corinthians 9:16). Paul felt driven to announce the gos- pel to as many people as possible, “to save at least some” (9:22). This good news is the mystery of the life, death, and res- urrection of Jesus Christ, who lifted Simon Peter’s mother-in- law from her sickbed with a mere touch of his hand. “The whole town was gathered at the door. He cured many who were sick with various diseases, and he drove out many de- mons” (Mark 1:33–34)). Our woes and demons are as real as Job’s, and Jesus is our savior.

  • Feast of Faith: The Gloria (1) The Gloria, or Glory to God, follows the peniten al rite. Both are acts of praise. In the peniten al rite, we sing of the mercy of Christ. In the Gloria we praise God’s saving ac on in the universe. The Gloria is a rela vely late addi on to the Mass. It first appeared in the Roman liturgy in the sixth century, and then it was sung only by the pope—and only on Christmas! With me, the hymn came to be sung by bishops on major feasts, and then by priests; finally, it became the song of the en re assembly. With the advent of more elaborate musical se ngs, the people gradually stopped singing the Gloria, un l this song of the people became the exclusive domain of the priest and the choir. But the liturgical reforms have restored it to its place as primarily the song of the assembly. The language of the Gloria echoes the New Testament can cles. It may be begun by the priest, the cantor, and the en re assembly in varied combina ons. The Gloria is some mes called the “greater doxology,” and in some ways it is like an extended, ecsta c version of the familiar doxology (“Glory be to the Father”) prayed in the Divine Office and the rosary.

UPDATE: Mass & Confession Times Star ng the week of January 24 and con nuing through July 1, there will be some addi ons to the sacramental schedule: Tuesdays: Confessions

When I think of how the book I co-wrote with Fr. Richard Heilman and Fr. James Altman came

into being it is just amazing. On July 2nd I was finishing a

private retreat and saw a post from Fr. Heilman who was thinking of doing something to promote devo on. I had spent the week rereading Dom Scupoli's book on Spiritual Warfare (the book St. Francis de Sales kept on him) and praying about things going on in my own life, in my parishes' lives, and what I saw going on in society and the Church. I had not intended such a grand idea, but Fr. Heilman 's post got me thinking. I decided to text him that night with a very, very rough sketch of an idea of a 40-day program drawing from what I had read that week and books I had read by Fr. Gabriel Amorth and others. Fr. Heilman jumped all over it. In 24 hours we had laid out the groundwork. Fr. Heilman brought on Fr. Altman to help. We were talking about wri ng 40 columns in 40 days. Fr. Heilman and I decided to announce it was going to start on July 7th on July 4th. The working tle, "Let Freedom Ring:40 days for freedom from the Devil" became permanent. I am used to wri ng long pastor's pens, but cranking out 16 columns while not backing off of any parochial du es and being away for Camp Maccabee for a

week was a tall order. But, by the grace of God, it happened. Now that 40 day program is a book. It was released a week ago and has far outdone anything I thought it would do. Thankfully Fr. Heilman has a much be er vision than me. It is available at romancatholicgear.com. We are going to get the program going again for Lent. The point is that we don't kill a tree by killing its fruit, but by killing its roots. We waste a lot me forming circular firing squads when we need to aim and fire at our own personal demons who drag us into sin. This is in many ways a long and detailed examina on of conscience. I know I squirmed when I wrote some of my columns. There

was a fair bit of "physician heal thyself" which helped me. Let's take the ba le to the father of lies, chaos, and division … because we have a job to do as a Church that desperately needs to be done.

The distribu on of ashes will be different this year due to COVID. On Ash Wednesday, we will distribute ashes, but will do so by dropping ashes on the top of each person's

head rather than applying them in the shape of a cross on each person's forehead. This is common prac ce in

much of the world, but will be new to us. The words that are usually spoken with the appli-

ca on of ashes will not be spoken. Our Ash Wednesday

schedule of Masses will be 8:15 a.m. and 6 p.m.
