    Ss 2013>> MASSIVE MOVEMENT II - TOKYO

    THEME

    PROGRAM

    This semester we will continue with the theme o Massive Movement in a dierent scale and

    programmatic context. We will look at the design o a large moving room that can inuence and

    transorm its surroundings. We will specifcally be looking into retail environments which have

    changing oor plan and wall confgurations, but instead o operable walls there should be an

    architectural element in the orm o a large volume that moves through the space in order to

    subdivide and reconfgure the overall structure, program and orm.

    The program is a 5 storey department store that sits on a ootprint o roughly 500 m2. Each team

    will pick one o these 3 brand options below and tailor a store concept based on their knowledge

    o the brand, merchandise size, inventory, retail requirements and programmatic specifcities.

    Overall each option will need to have display areas, an event space, a prominent entry lobby and

    a large moving room that reconfgures the overall building. Based on the brand you pick, you

    might have to have additional elements such as bathrooms, kitchen, ftting rooms and other areas

    that require a specifc experience or interacting with the products such as digital displays

    etc. It is up to each team to fnd a programmatic signifcance or what is inside the moving

    volume and what it does to the organization o the building and to its surroundings as it moves.

    PROGRAM

    1- Muji

    Muji is personal items, stationery, very small things mostly. Inventory is on the oor or

    most items (everything in inventory is typically displayed or the customer to put in a basket

    or cart and take to the register).

    2- Hermes

    Hermes is clothing and luggage with one item o each object displayed in sections defning

    typologies and gender. Inventory is in cases on the oor or in another room. The customer

    interacts with a service person who then gets the items and brings it to P.O.P. (point o pur-

    chase).

    3- Sega

    Sega is electronics and entertainment in a cloud based transition with video games and virtual

    content so will have little inventory at all and will be more o a brand experience center.

    There should be personal and collective consoles or playing with their products. Large and

    small screens or display and the ability or theater like events and launches.

    The site is located in the busy shopping district o Ginza in Tokyo. It is a centrally located

    corner site. The dimensions are 17m by 30 m. We will be replacing the brown building in the cor-

    ner.
