What is SS7?

• SS7 = Signaling System 7

• Signaling = functions that must be performed in a telephone network in order to make / receive calls

– e.g., call routing, setup, and tear down

• Number 7 = 7th iteration of signaling methodology

• Less susceptible to fraud than previous types of signaling

• More cost effective than earlier signaling methodologies

3

SS7 Significance• Why is SS7 important?

– Foundation for basic & advanced global telecom services

• How is SS7 different from the rest of the telephone network?

– Pure data network

– Physically separate from voice network

SS7 Applications• Simplifies and enables cost effective connectivity to carriers

– Hub-based connectivity– One to many vs. extensive bi-lateral connections

• SS7 enables advanced services– Caller ID– SMS messages- Local number portability- Toll free number portability- Alternate destination on busy- Remote call forwarding- Enhanced toll free service- Inbound call restriction- Outbound call restriction

6

Syniverse SS7 Applications• Applications providing value added services

– National Calling Name (CNAM)

– Fraud Manager

– Signaling Solutions

– SMS Interworking Gateway (SMS – IG)

– Uniroam

SS7 is an Enabler for Syniverse• Products that leverage SS7 network to generate revenues

– Inlink– ISUP– Links & Ports– Query/Response Service (QRS)– Toll Free– CNAM Transport– LIDB Storage– Local Number Portability (LNP)/ Local Routing Number (LRN)– National CNAM– Visibility

9

Impact of IP• Next Generation Signaling (IP) eliminates

requirements for physical connections– IP connection required

• Lowers network costs

• Enables new services– Voice over IP (VoIP)– Multi-player gaming– Content sharing– Fixed/Mobile convergence– Presence management– Multi-party video conferencing
