Improving Accurate Dosing for Pediatric MedicationsMidwestern University College of Pharmacy – Glendale
Student Society of Health-System Pharmacy
Introduction The majority of preventable adverse drug events in pediatric
outpatients occur during drug administration in the home1
Two main factors that contribute to dosing error rates2
• Type of dosing instrument used• Health literacy level of the parent or caregiver
What pharmacists can do to improve medication safety and efficacy in the homes of pediatric patients3
• Counsel on understanding the dose • Explain weight-based dosing• Demonstrate how to use appropriate dosing
instruments for accurate measurement• Provide oral delivery devices at the pharmacy
Outcome The SSHP booth attracted many families, students, and faculty
• Parents expressed interest in the discussion about the importance of accurate dosing
• Many gained knowledge of at least one key point from our poster and presentation
SSHP officers and members strengthened leadership and communication skills throughout the project development
