Today’s Psalm Response

Praise the Lord, my soul! (Psalm 146)

Our Adult Faith Word, Eucharist, Life

Thirty-second Sunday Ordinary Time

The widow visited by Elijah

had no one the help her

except God in whom she had faith.

God did not act to assist her

without Elijah.

The widows and the poor

of our world might well depend on God,

yet without us God cannot act

on their behalf.

The widow in Mark’s gospel story

must have had similar faith in God;

we do not know her fate

at the hands of those more well off.

While Jesus saw the witness

she was to give to the disciples,

can we believe that he just left her

to fend for herself?

We can feel compassion for the widows

and orphans of our world,

but the feeling goes nowhere

without our doing compassion

in their regard.

Jesus in his paschal mystery

shows his love for us,

but he went the distance doing love

for us as we are to do for others.

As we approach a season

of thanksgiving and of giving

we must face the question,

not What’s in your wallet?

but What’s in your heart?

Jesus focuses on the generosity

of a poor widow in contrast

to the showiness of the well-to-do

who do not even see the widow,

much less her poverty and need.

Indeed, what do we see

as God calls us to intervene

on behalf of divine compassion?

Please write the names of your departed loved ones in the Book of Remembrance.

Second Collection Next Sunday, November 18 Next Sunday, November 18th, there will be a 2nd collection in all Catholic parishes in our country for the Catholic Cam-paign for Human Development. For more than 30 years this national collection has been taken up on the Sunday before Thanksgiving. The Catholic Campaign for Human Devel-opment has been very supportive of MICAH, the citi-zens’ organization in Memphis for social justice, of which St. Patrick’s is an institutional member. MICAH received a $25,000 start-up grant from CCHD. Also, MICAH just received word that it will receive another $50,000 this year for further support, and this $50,000 will be renewa-ble for the subsequent five years, if certain benchmarks are met. So, please be generous, as the Catholic Campaign for Human Development is very supportive to Memphis’ efforts through MICAH. Envelopes will be in the pews for the second collection next week.

Catechesis of the Good Shepherd We've had wonderful attend-ance in the first 8 weeks of atrium, and we had a great parent turnout for Rebekah’s presentation of Advent and Christmas in the Life of the Atrium. It is wonderful to see parents committing to their children’s faith for-mation.

Atrium sessions will not meet on November 25 (Thanksgiving weekend), but will resume on December 2, the First Sunday of Advent.

Building and Grounds

Parish Work Night This past Tuesday night we held another parish work night….and we were able to check off a lot of items on our to-do list. Namely: 1. David Williams and AJ Dierks re-hung the 4th street door that we have been reconditioning for months. It now needs a final coat of green paint to match the front doors . 2. Don Farrell repaired the door knob leading into the church door from the Narthex. 3. AJ Dierks also caulked a few of the outside stained glass windows...in the dark with his handy head lamp.

4. Jim Martin organized our workshop, locat-ed in the basement of the office building. 5. Dave Smith and Rodney Schmitz hung a sheet of plywood leading down the basement stairs to prevent ceiling tile from falling down 6. David Williams caulked the front doors. 7. Pete Alfonso applied drywall compound to the Center wall where the TV is. Now that area looks very nice. He also fixed drywall areas above the two new thermostats in the Bragan-za Room. 8. Rodney Schmitz put a second and final coat of brown paint on the metal storage door by the Center entrance. 9. Rusty Ramsey put a second coat of yellow

on the concrete barriers in the school parking lot. 10. Dave Smith put in the new plexiglas front for our MLK side St Patrick sign. Thanks to Terry Woodard for the artwork on the sign.

11. Katie Schmitz painted some trim in the up-stairs Catechesis area and is working at home on fabric projects for Catechesis. 12. Mike Donohoe picked up the brass hard-ware for the front doors and is using his Navy skills to shine them so they will be ready when the doors are painted.
