Dear Parents,

Welcome back to routine!!

On Monday morning, in homes all over Rooty Hill and beyond, the ?back to routine? blues began!! No doubt there was a sense of anticipation and excitement at reconnecting with routines and with our friends and colleagues.

In our homes, I?m sure this school community was in one way or another the focus of our activity and thoughts? bags packed, shoes shined, nervousness, excitement, last minute reminders and checks.

So at 8.15am we gathered as a community? we come (as we do everyday) seeking to belong once again, wanting this community to be a safe and respectful place for ourselves. As individuals we come together to create a community? what a challenge!

If each of us want this to be a happy, safe and respectful place? what responsibilities lie with each individual?

At the beginning of this term, we start afresh?

- to learn - to support - to commit - to enjoy - to create a wonderful community, which seeks to be

? .authentically Catholic

? . inviting and safe for all whereby all care for self, others and the environment.

Best wishes for what will undoubtedly be a wonderful term. When individuals seek ways to be happy and safe, the community continues to flourish.

In this place find a sense of? church ? community ? communion Hear a call to? loving kindness ? compassion ? unity Know a time for? believing ? supporting ? upholding

Recognise a feeling of? openness ? integrity ? truthfulness Expect a movement to ? encouragement ? include ? forgive

Experience a school for? prayer ? people ? God Inhabit a haven for? the weak ? the peacemakers ? the spirit.

Pace e bene!

Welcome back to Term 3. May it be a productive and fulfil l ing term.

In last week?s gospel we hear that to be a disciple of Jesus is to experience a call. It is also to be sent on a mission in partnership with others, a mission invariably expressed in terms of preaching, teaching, healing, and/or driving out of demons or unclean spirits. In other words, it is to be authorised to do what Jesus did and to proclaim what he proclaimed. When we hear of Jesus casting out demons and telling his disciples to do likewise, we tend to think that whatever they did is something that belongs to another time and has little to do with our contemporary society.

Today?s parents spend much of their time casting out the ?demons? that beset their children, as do our friends when they sit and listen to the pain in our hearts and help us to let go of the ?demons? that so often inhabit our psyches. Many health professionals are paid to heal the emotional hurts as well as the physical cuts and burns. They drive out the demons of fear, hate, prejudice and of paralysing mental illness. Educators also, aware that learning occurs only when students are relatively free from fear and anxiety, know what it means to drive out the demons.

It is significant that Jesus instructs the disciples to travel light.

They need the basics to live and to do their job, but if their mission is to be effective, they must be free from the anxiety that comes from excess. Psychologist and social critic John F. Schumaker suggests that societies with the most material goods tend to be the most anxious. ?Mutual respect, community-mindedness, an eagerness to share, reverence for nature, thankfulness, and love of life?, it seems, are the major ingredients for a stress- or ?demon?-free personal and community life. There would be no need to shake the dust from our feet for want of hospitality if that were the way we all chose to live. What?s more, there would be enough for all on our planet, the human and other-than-human, to live in dignity and peace.

Let us take this into consideration as we approach the new term. As a strong and loving community may we, as disciples of Christ, work harmoniously together for the greater good and take the time to reflect on the many blessings that we have been afforded in this wonderful part of the world. May we focus on those things that are most important, reject the desire to lead a life of worthless materialism and consciously work for the justice of all people, just as Jesus Christ did.

Uniform

School uniforms are looking great at the moment, however with the cold snap that we are having I would just like to reinforce a few points to ensure all students are wearing the uniform correctly and are following all school rules in relation to uniform.

- During Terms 2 and 3 all students are required to wear their school blazer to and from school every day.

- School jumpers can be worn underneath the blazer but jumpers cannot be worn by themselves ? at no point are students permitted to have a hoodie under their blazers.

- Scarves can be worn but they must be black.

- All female students should wear the correct black stockings to school each day (footless tights are unacceptable).

- Hair cuts need to be natural in appearance. - All long hair must be tied up and out of

the students face all day every day.

Student Behaviour

There have been a couple of occasions this week in class and on the playground of students not making good decisions. Students need to be aware of the student responsibilities, which appear in their school diaries (page vi). Every student has the right to a safe and healthy school environment. This means all students need to work together to maintain a safe and clean environment.

A safe school needs to include looking out for others and keeping safety at the forefront of their minds. The ?hands off? policy is in place to protect all students. There are consequences for students who decide to make wrong choices.

I encourage all students to read through the ?Student Rights and Responsibilities? which appears in the school diary on page vi. I also encourage parents to read this with their children. In doing so the partnership between the student, family and school are strengthened.

I hope all have an enjoyable and safe fortnight.

Year 10 Western Sydney Careers Expo & School Careers Forum

On Thursday 18 June Year 10 students travelled to Sydney Olympic Park to visit many of the one hundred and twenty exhibitors at the Western Sydney Careers Expo. Students spent time walking through exhibitor stalls and speaking to various course providers about career paths and opportunities. Universities, TAFEs, the Australian Defence Force and numerous private colleges representing the arts, music, information technology and hospitality industries were visited. Students also had the opportunity to sit and listen to seminar talks including those given by the Universities Admissions Centre, the Mathematics Association of NSW and the Academy of Interactive Entertainment.

Following this excursion, on Friday 19 June, the school held its first Careers Forum in the San Damiano Centre. The purpose of this day was to expand the thinking of the students about careers and career pathways. Students were divided into small groups and rotated between five presentations during the forum. The presentations were led by Australian Catholic University lecturers and current students, as well as a lecturer from the University of Western Sydney. Students gained information on Business, Law and Health Science degrees, along with VET options and transitions and support provided in tertiary education and employment.

Overall, both days were highly beneficial in providing relevant and timely information to the students that could be used to assist in their subject choices for Years 11 and 12.

Year 7 CL excursion ? Jewish Synagogue / St Mary?s Cathedral.

At the end of last term Year 7, as part of their Connected Learning studies, travelled to Sydney and Bondi to visit two religious landmarks. These religious centres for worship were St Mary?s Cathedral in Sydney and the Great Synagogue at Bondi. Although a rather wet and cold day students, along with their Connected Learning teachers and other members of staff, were afforded the opportunity to experience two different religious experiences from both Judaism and Christianity.

At the Jewish Synagogue students participated in a forum facilitated by Rabbi Cohen who guided students through his faith, sacred text, rites and rituals, as well as symbols used within the faith.

At the Cathedral students were given a guided tour of this remarkable sacred place. Students were in awe of the beauty and splendor of the Cathedral, from the Gothic architecture to the ornate stained glass windows portraying the Stations of the Cross, Catholic saints and martyrs as well as the walls of the church being adorned with many statues, from the Virgin Mary through to Saint Mary of the Cross Mackillop, and Saint John Paul II. Students also experienced the crypt within the grounds of the Cathedral, in which the early forefathers of the Catholic Church in Australia are laid to rest. Below is just a sample of the students? reflections upon the excursion from Mrs Devine?s class.

?Year 7 went on an amazing trip to Sydney and Bondi to see the beautiful St Mary?s Cathedral and the astonishing Central Synagogue. Year 7 had an amazing trip and we highly recommend this excursion for others in future?. Nera Pulido ? 7 CL A3

?On the 16th June 2015, Year 7 students went on an excursion to explore the St Mary?s Cathedral and the Jewish Synagogue. Students went to the city to learn about the topic, ?Who Care?s About Stories?? The most enjoyable part of the excursion was the St Mary?s Cathedral because I learned more about our faith and became closer to God. Another thing that was an enjoyable part of the excursion was the bus trip between the different places because we saw the famous Opera House, Sydney Harbour Bridge and different places of Sydney.? Althea Fajardo ? 7 CL A3

Living out our Franciscan Spirituality

This semester, as part of living out our Franciscan Spirituality in accordance with our school formation goal, each homeroom has been provided with a sacred space which is adorned with the symbols of the Christian faith. A St Agnes prayer book was distributed to staff members which includes the liturgical calendar, so as we move through the liturgical cycle the colours of the sacred space may change.

Students were issued with a specific prayer attributed to them., Year 7 ? Prayer to St Agnes of Rome, Year 8 ? Prayer to St Mary of the Cross Mackillop, Year 9 ? The Beatitudes, and Year 10 ? The Peace Prayer of St Francis. This is to allow students to connect with their spirituality, and build a stronger sense of our Catholic and Franciscan heritage.

Below is the structure of the morning prayer each day, showing how the formation goal will be evident across all year groups.

Teacher:        Pace e Bene Students:       Peace and all Good All:                Sign of the Cross Teacher:        Are there any special intentions?                    (for each intention) Students:       Lord hear our prayer Teacher:        Let us now recite our Year Prayer All:                Recite Prayer. In Week 9 of Term 2 Year 8 students, as part of their science lessons for the Unit of Earth and Space, had a guest speaker speak to them about 'Material Matters'. This discussion focused on the importance of conserving natural resources by using our household bins. The students learned about some facts, such as

- Recycling everything in the yellow bin effectively leads to 75% reduction in the amount of rubbish send to landfill.

- Every tonne of paper recycled saves 13 trees. - Glass recycled (no ceramics) is used to make bricks and road surface. - Energy saved from recycling just one glass bottle is enough to power a computer for 25

minutes. - 1 recycled plastic bottle saves enough energy to power a 60 watt light for 3 hours. - 125 milk bottles are used to make one bin at home. - Steel cans are recycled to make paper clips, cars or new cans and this saves 60-70% of energy.

This science incursion has helped the school community to become bin wise and be informed regarding the global and local issues faced by us. Students learned about challenges faced currently and in future. They were able to come up with solutions to some of these problems. We hope this initiative continues beyond our school.

Mrs Kehal Science Coordinator

Student Reflection

Do you care about our environment and all the living organisms in it? Then you best read this.

One person produces 3.5 kilograms of waste every week. If the rubbish is not segregated properly, we will run out of landfill space (landfill is how we choose to dispose of our waste instead of incinerating it, it is basically a huge pit of rubbish) by 2017 - in two years!

Recycling as much as possible can help reduce 75% of what we send to landfill. Australia is the second highest producer of waste in the world. This is because we are a throw-away society, which means that every time something breaks, we don't bother fixing it but throw it away, or when a new model of something comes out, we buy it and throw away the old model, even if it isn't broken.

To know what type of plastic to place in the recycling bin use the crunch test. If you can crunch the plastic in your hand you can put it in the yellow recycling bin BUT NEVER put plastic bags, biscuit trays and lolly bags in the yellow bin. Plastic bags, biscuit trays and lolly bags can be returned to our supermarkets such as Coles and Woolworths. By returning these, we can help make plastic chairs and the reusable bags that you buy at the supermarket.

Some councils have a red bin and a green bin to sort their rubbish into. A green bin is to put organic wastes in such as food scraps, garden scraps and dog or cat litter. In the red bin everything else can be placed. It is important to put the right rubbish in the right bin so unnecessary items don't go to landfill and you make the lives of the people working at Cleanaway (Blacktown Council's chosen recycling company) easier.

The effects of not putting rubbish in the right bin can be catastrophic because greenhouse gases will create global warming and melt the polar caps and may cause polar animals to be extinct in the wild. So it is important to put rubbish in the right bin not just to save money and space, but to save lives as well. More information on recycling can be obtained from Planet Ark

UNSW Debating Excursion

Recently the Year 9 and 10 debating teams had the unique opportunity to go the Kensington Campus of the University of New South Wales to compete in a debating tournament against a variety of local schools.

Each team member had 30 minutes to come up with a 5-7 minute speech to convince the adjudicator of their case. It was a gruelling task but one that both teams proved themselves to be capable of surmounting.

The ?rst debate was on the topic of "All students should be forced to complete Year 12". Both of our teams were af?rmative but neither team won this round.

The second debate was on the topic of "The media should not report on celebrity drug issues". Again both teams were affirmative and our Year 10 team won this round but our Year 9 team did not.

The third debate was on the topic "Mandatory voting should be abolished". Year 10 also won this round although Year 9 did not, both teams were af?rmative.

Although neither team made it to the ?nal round or won the competition, both teams learned some valuable skills. Both teams were given the opportunity to work on their improvisation skills and argument development as well as time management skills while preparing. The students thoroughly enjoyed the unique learning experience.

Studying the film I, Robot in class inspired me to create this poster (right) for my English assessment task.

This poster may not show the aspects of I, Robot, but it has a lot of meaning. It expresses Science Fiction in relation to the text displayed in my poster.

In creating this poster, I've explored various themes from the film, and invented symbols that represent these themes. For example, the theme displayed in my poster is the 'journey to the unknown' which relates to other themes such as 'technology evolution' and how it may be a risk to our society in the future

Reflecting on Year 9 English

Term 2 English brought an exciting new topic for Year 9 classes: Science Fiction. Each class watched a science fiction movie (The Hunger Games, I,Robot, Wall-E or The Giver) and were asked to complete an assessment task around this concept.

The assessment task consisted of three parts: a visual representation, an artist's explanation for the representation and finally an in class essay on film techniques and themes that were presented in their respective films.

The first part of the assessment, creating a poster or visual representation symbolising one theme found from the allocated film, brought up a wide variety of imaginative abstract art. Originality was clearly shown and expressed creatively by students across the grade, by using a range of unique and symbolic colours, shapes and materials.

The special visual representations were marked and are now placed on the 'Wall of Work' in the Chappotin building, for students to admire and comment on the amazing effort given for this assignment. The 'gallery' allows students to compare and contrast ideas, while feeling inspired about this topic.

As part of a class reflection on the assessment, classes reviewed the work together and, with the aid of their teacher, examined the art and put forward some of their ideas about certain pieces.

This experience provided a great way for students to anonymously get a feel for the quality of work produced throughout the grade and to see more representations outside of their friendship groups.

Catholic Schools Debating Competition

We participated in the six rounds of debates organised by the Catholic Schools Debating Association (CSDA). This season was a great and fruitful experience for all of us. Whilst we came across difficult obstacles, it was worthwhile as the life skills and bonds we gained are far more valuable and definitely worth the struggles. Through this competition, we have gained a variety of skills crucial to the adult world that we will be entering in a few years' time. First and foremost, the nature of debating enabled us to step out of our comfort zones and gain confidence in our abilities, through the tackling of issues we that we would not usually think of, and discussing them in front of an audience. The pressure from the time constraints also created room for us to think fast and improvise.

Aside from that, our English skills have improved because of debating. It allowed us to expand on our vocabularies, incorporating more sophisticated words in our speeches, such as 'intrepidity' and 'indubitably'. The importance of structuring paragraphs was also constantly reinforced ? the idea of having an example and an explanation for every point taught us how to make stronger arguments, which is extremely helpful in all our subject areas.

The topics we debated on also gave us further insight on what our world is like. For instance, the debate on human rights showed us the extent to which different countries violate the rights of their own citizens. Discussions like this made us more open-minded in the process, as we considered the factors of the opposite sides of often controversial issues.

These skills we gained and honed had guided the Year 10 team, who started from the very bottom of the ocean, on our way to the top of Mt Everest. However, this wouldn't be possible if it weren't for the bonds we had formed amongst fellow debaters and our dedicated debating tutors.

The Thursday afternoons and Friday nights we debaters spent together created opportunities for us to bond with other year groups. Oftentimes, we found our nervousness disappear as one member would crack jokes and another would create pointless debates. We also explored other schools together and even discovered the splendours of our very own St Agnes Catholic High School ? the beautiful school lights at night, and the classic 'ghost hunting'. Our debating teachers also played a vital role in this experience. The feedback we received for our practices and debates allowed us to see what we needed to improve on, and how to work on it. They motivated us to persevere despite our stress from school, even helping us in better understanding our assessment tasks during free time.

Paraphrasing Mr Krishna, 'The debaters are like Simbas turning into Mufasas.' On behalf of the Year 10 debating team, we would like to thank our tutors for being the Rafikis that guided us on this journey. Whilst we are still in the process of becoming Mufasas, it is thanks to the teachers that we are currently headed in the right direction.

As they say, people may forget what you said, but they won't forget how you made them feel. Likewise, although we may forget our endless discussions and practices, we will never forget the warmth that our debating family gave us. We will never forget the sense of belongingness and support we obtained from this journey. We will never forget the pure happiness from playing Uno with our debating tutors. We will never forget the pride in seeing Years 7 to 9 making it to elimination rounds, Years 8 and 9 advancing to quarter-finals and finally year 8 continuing onto the semi-finals. The furthest St Agnes has ever achieved. We will never forget.

From the bottom of our hearts, we deeply appreciate being a part of this marvellous journey that gave us valuable life lessons and experiences, and the teachers and fellow debaters that supported us and drove us to develop more. We wish St Agnes' future debaters the best of luck in the competitions to come, and to enjoy what their debating journeys have in store for them.
