Rossini: Barber of Seville OvertureDvořák: Cello ConcertoMahler: Symphony No.1 in D

Conductor: Patrick BaileyCello: Michael Wigram

Rossini’s lively overture sets the scene for two landmark works in the history of music. Dvořák’s Cello Concerto, written in America in1895–6 and played tonight by local cellist Michael Wigram, is a poignant and emotional masterwork for the cello, in which the composer commemorates his recently deceased sister-in-law. Composed just seven years earlier, Mahler’s first symphony, often referred to as Titan, was premiered in Budapest in 1889 and established Mahler as a major composer of symphonic works in the central European tradition.

St Albans Symphony Orchestra

Festival ConcertSt Saviour’s Church, Sandpit Lane AL1 4DFSaturday 28th June, 7.30pm

Beethoven: Symphony No.8Rachmaninov: Piano Concerto No.3Janáček: Taras Bulba

Conductor: Bjorn BantockPiano: Alissa Firsova

The Eighth Symphony is full of joviality, good humour and lightness of texture and mood despite the fact that at the time Beethoven was immersed in emotional turmoil emanating from a family feud. He referred to the symphony, affectionately, as “the little one”.

Rachmaninov left his native Russia in 1917 after training at the Conservatories of Moscow and St. Petersburg. He toured the world extensively as pianist and made his mark as composer with very skilfully written works. His third Piano Concerto, based around melodic ideas of great beauty and simplicity, yet notorious for its technical demands, is regarded by many as the epitome of the piano concerto.
