St. Aloysius Century FoundationMission Statement

The mission of the St. Aloysius Century foundation is to provide financial support to help perpetuate the educational charism of the Brothers of the Sacred Heart at Brother Martin High School. This charism is expressed within the Brothers’ own Rule of Life and their Educational Mission and Ministry document.

Dear Alumni, Parents and Friends,

The educational tradition of the Brothers of the Sacred Heart is rooted in religious values, structured through friendly discipline, committed to academic excellence, and nurtured by personal attention. At Brother Martin personal attention develops a spirit of openness with students and parents and is the central principal of our philanthropic mission.

In the naming of our endowments, we honor those individuals that made personal attention the corner stone of their educational missions – Bro. Jean Sobert, S.C. Student Activities Endowment, Bro. Neal Golden, S.C. Technology Endowment, Brother Nicholas Building Endowment Fund, Robert M. “Bob” Conlin Athletic Endowment, Marty Hurley Band Endowment, and those who represent the beneficiaries of that personal attention, the Bellinger Family Endowment, Larry Garvey Campus Ministry - Religion Endowment, and the Trey Culotta Memorial Fund. Our endowments currently exceed $8.7 million in hand with an additional $6.4 million in pledges. The earnings from these endowments help provide long-term financial security to the institution in many areas.

Now with our endowment program firmly established, we are turning our attention to a re-visioning of Phase III of our Master Plan. We will take this time to assess what our physical needs are as a school.

Your support with these endowments and in many other ways will continue to reap dividends for our school, and more importantly, our students, for many years.

The investment you have made in our school touches and affects everyone on campus. So whether it is in the giving of your time, your talent or financial resources, your continued support affords our administration, faculty, and staff the resources and the facilities to educate and form our young men into caring, productive Christian men.

Your commitment to us provides us with the motivation to continue the charism of the Brothers of the Sacred Heart and help our students become productive, faithful, Christian men in our society. As we do this we “Stand on Your Shoulders,” for you are the foundation and support that gives us the strength and resources to provide a great educational and formational experience for the young men in our care.

Brother Martin High School President’s Message

Dear Alumni, Parents, and Friends,

Wonderful events take place every day at Brother Martin High School, in large part due to you and your continued support of our mission. We all hold our founder Father André Coindre’s hands when we come together to serve God and to help our young Crusaders become the men God wants them to be.

The world around us is changing. But we steadfastly remain true to our charism and to Jesus’ Gospel message. Walking the halls of Brother Martin, you will see students engaged in challenging and interesting academic work, bettering their communities through service, growing in leadership through activities and athletics, and interacting with the faculty and staff with courtesy and generosity. Our Campus Ministry Team continues to provide real and rich prayer experiences for our students and faculty and staff: Catholic religious formation is never an add-on but an integral part of daily life. Yearly retreats for all students, service work each year, daily class prayer, Eucharistic Adoration, school-wide Masses, Lenten mission drives, Christmas toy drives--these are just a sprinkling of what our students and teachers do. They are not part of our culture here at Brother Martin--they ARE our culture!

The world around us is changing. We are changing too. Technology applications. Standardized test preparation. Interdisciplinary connections. Field experiences and research. The year is 2015, and our school academics reflect it. Each student collects and organizes data, creates, and collaborates, all on his individual device in this, our first completed BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) year with all 1,202 students. Chemistry teacher Dr. David Jouandot leads a group of young science researchers in the investigation on various salinity and oxygen levels in lake water on largemouth bass. Enrique’s Journey, a true account of the harsh realities of illegal immigration into the United States in our current century, brought together multi disciplinary approaches to learning across all grade levels and all academic disciplines in this year’s Great Read. Our work in our academic program is never at rest: we are constantly striving to engage and challenge students, making learning meaningful and always rooted in Christian values. Extensive faculty professional development in all areas of curriculum and instruction take place every year, on our campus and at conferences throughout the United States. We are the life long learners we want our students to be!

What makes us constantly want to be better? Our mission calls us to form young men “to meet the needs of a changing world.” The world changes constantly, and we remain steadfast in opposition to the secularization of our world, and we remain in constant growth to make sure our education is relevant for the 21st century. We either remain firmly rooted or move forward all with your support, your blessings, and your dedication to a mission started 194 years ago in Lyon, France, and 146 years ago here in New Orleans. You are part of our history, our present, and our future.

On September 26, 1869 four Brothers of the Sacred Heart opened St. Aloysius College in New Orleans in response to an invitation from Archbishop Jean-Marie Odin. The school was located in a brick building in the French Quarter at

Chartres and Barracks

streets. Through the untiring efforts of Brother Stanislaus Keating, first director of the school, it grew from a student body of 66 its first year. By the second year, a fifth Brother joined the staff which worked with the 120 boys, most of them sons of poor immigrants.

From this humble beginning in 1869, grew Brother Martin High School

with an enrollment of over 1200 and over 14,000 alumni worldwide. Membership in the Society of 1869 is offered to all those who share this commitment, who endorse Brother Martin High School’s mission, and who, like those Brothers in 1869

and those who followed, affirm that commitment by means of a planned gift.

To become eligible for Society membership, an individual simply informs the school in writing that Brother Martin High School has been included in his or her estate plans. The school also requires documentation of the planned gift, for example, a copy of the pertinent provisions of the individual’s will or trust, a copy of the life

insurance policy which names the school as a beneficiary, or a letter from the individual’s attorney stating that he or she has, indeed, included Brother Martin High School in his or her estate plans. Upon receipt of such documentation, participants are enrolled in the Society of 1869.

A replica of the St. Aloysius column is the gift given to members of the Society of 1869 as a token of the school’s appreciation for their support for Brother Martin High School through a planned gift.
