5th Sunday in Ordinary Time Sunday, February 5th, 2017
5th Sunday in Ordinary Time "You are the light of the world." Speaking to his followers, Jesus tells them of the influence they are meant to have. Like the seasoning that gives food its flavor, they are to be "the salt of the earth" and like a lamp on a lampstand that "gives light to all in the house." Clearly, their influence on the people around them is meant to be positive and substantial. But what is the source of this irreplaceable influence?
Elsewhere in the Gospels, Jesus declares that HE is "the light of the world" (cf. Jn 8:12). So when he tells his disciples that "your light must shine before others," he is speaking about the light that comes from following him, from believing in him, from living their lives for him and with him. The light of Christ brightens the world, showing us the truth and meaning of our existence. And to the extent that we have that light in our hearts, it naturally spreads out to impact those around us.
So, today we must ask ourselves whether or not we are shining the way we are meant to as Christians. Do we brighten up our families, our workplaces, our neighborhoods, and our parishes? Are people encouraged, inspired, edified, and supported by our presence? Do we bring the kind of flavor that enriches life with a taste of the authentic truth, beauty, and goodness that comes from God alone? Or have we become a bit bland, like salt that "loses its taste" or light that is hidden "under a bushel basket"? It's important to be on guard against any tendency to let our faith be reduced to a mere routine or ritual. Rather, when we nurture our faith to be a living force that defines us and our actions, it will be a source of joy and renewal not only for us, but for the whole world.
Adopt a Teen for Steubenville East! Please consider making a donation to the Steubenville East Youth Conference scholarship fund. The conference offers wonderful opportunities for our teens to deepen their faith life together with other Catholic teens from around the Northeast. We have 14 students and chaperones who are attending this year, several of whom are in need of financial assistance. Fund raising events are planned, but further assistance is needed. The cost for one student to attend is $230.00.
If you are able to help, please mail your donations to:
St. Aloysius of Gonzaga Parish
48 W. Hollis St. Nashua, NH 03060
or you can drop it by the Rectory Office.
Please see this week’s insert to read about our students’ experiences at last year’s
Steubenville East Conference! Thank you for your help!
Soiree 2017 - Thank You! On January 27th we had our 11th Annual Soiree Canadienne. It was a wonderful celebration of our parish’s French roots. A sincere thank you to all of the volunteers that helped organize this event! Following the drawing of a 50-50 raffle, a total of $460.00 was donated to the parish. In addition, the Youth Ministry and Confirmation students that helped serve dinner earned a total of $675.00 in tips. These funds will be used to defray the cost for the youth to attend events such as Steubenville East Conference and Youthfest. Last but not least, thank you to everyone that attended this fun evening.

Families Coping with the Opioid Crisis A team of Catholic Charities New Hampshire clinicians skilled in addiction counseling will present “Families Coping with the Opioid Crisis” at Our Lady of Mercy Parish, Merrimack, on February 27 at 6:30-8:00 pm.
This unique CCNH initiative focuses on addiction as a family disease. The team relies on the medical model of addiction counseling. Topics include addiction and the brain; enabling behavior; setting boundaries and communicating with a loved one struggling with addiction. There will be opportunities for questions.
Family supports group facilitators Susan McKeown of Families Advocating for Substance Abuse Treatment, Education & Recovery (FASTER) in Manchester and Lynn Fuller of Circle of Hope in Farmington will also offer personal accounts of loved one’s struggling with addiction and how to get help.
The team launched the program in late 2016. This is the first session to be held in Greater Nashua. Others are planned this spring. For more information, contact Rev. John Mahoney Jr., CCNH Clinical Services Director, at 669-3030ext. 233, or CCNH Communications Manager Kathryn Marchocki at 603-669-3030 ext. 207. This event is free, all are welcome.

Ministry to Visit the Homebound We reach out to more than 50 people now, most once a week, several once a month. These people are all located around the Nashua area, however they are no longer able to make it to mass. We could use more help with this very special task, bringing Communion to the sick. If you would like to join us in these efforts, please call Carmen Dussault at the rectory office. She will be happy to go over the schedule and procedure with you. It is NOT a requirement for you to be a Eucharistic Minister to serve in this Ministry, all are welcome. Thank you!
