STRIVING TO DO GOOD

S T . A N D R E A M AG A Z I N 3

OUR HISTORYThe St. Andrea Wine Estate was founded in Egerszalók in 2002. The estate was named after my wife, Andrea. I am truly grateful to her in many ways and I am sure I will never be able to duly compensate her for her love, patience, care and dedication…

With Andrea we started to establish our first vineyards in Egerszalók, followed by planting vines in the promising exposures in the surroundings of Egerszólát, Eger and Demjén. We aimed to have quality grapes grown on excellent terroir for our first wines. Thank God, our first wines born from the grapes we had produced for us were warmly welcomed.Several recognitions and awards helped to encourage us in our ambitions:Chardonnay du Monde 2004, Chaintré- Silver Medal; Challenge International du Vin 2004, Bordeaux – Bronze Medal; Austrian Wine Challenge 2004, Vienna- Silver Medal; VinAgora International Wine Challenge 2004, Budapest- Gold Medal…Since 2006 we have been increasing the number of parcels which hopefully have the possibil-ity to produce truly remarkable wines. The new plots are situated at the Great-Eged Mountain in Eger and Hangács in Demjén. Around that time our first wines were produced using grapes planted and grown in our own vineyards. Therefore, we could start the task that would involve generations: to continuously gather and summarize our wine-growing experience regarding the characteristics of the dif-ferent terroirs. We presented and publicized these unique experiences in the forms of wines, namely from the Kovászó, Ferenchegy, Paptag and Hangács slopes. In 2006 St. Andrea Wine Estate was chosen the most popular Hungarian winery in Borbarát Magazine’s top 12 survey.Meanwhile, the estate was given a new boost when our friends, András Bozó and Attila Kovács joined the company. With their help, at St. Andrea we started a course of creative and con-scious work, which we felt would bear blessings of great hope.

We were beginning to see clearer and clearer ideas in our minds regarding winemaking. We had our endless hope and trust in Eger wines. Being a wine region rich in history and unique character, our wine-making strategy focused on two kinds of wines: ‘Egri Csillag’ (Star of Eger) and’ Egri Bikavér’ (Bull’s Blood). We believe these wines mean the only chance to be-come individual and original for us and the Eger wine region.

From our 2007 vintage we presented the first single vineyard wine, Egri Bikavér made from grapes grown on Hangács of Demjén, after 2008 it was followed by bottling a blended white wine from the promising Boldogságos vineyard of Egerszólát .

György Lőrincz, winegrower of St. Andrea, was awarded “the Winegrower of the Year” title by the Hungarian Academy of Wines in 2009.

Amongst several fine international recognitions, the most memorable achievement is “the Red Wine of the Year” award by Proefschrift Wijnconcours in Holland, given to our Merengő Egri Bikavér Superior 2008 and 2009 vintages in 2010 and 2011.We are also proud of our ’Örökké’ 2008 wine, which was chosen “Gastro Wine of the Year” in 2010.

In recent years more and more emphasis has been given to organic grape growing, which we have been practicing in six of our vineyards and plots. In 2011 the Prestige Reserve Club awarded St. Andrea wine estate the Prestige Award 2011, which is given to the winery of the highest prestige.

Since 2013 a new expert, György Lőrincz Jr., has been helping our viticulture and winemaking.

PHILOSOPHYWE BELIEVE EGER IS ONE OF THE MOST EXCITING WINE REGIONS OF

HUNGARY. WE ARE GRATEFUL THAT WE HAVE THE POSSIBILITY TO

GROW GRAPES HERE.

Producing red and white wines from the same area is a particularly challenging task. We would like to create terroir-specific wines based on traditions and, at the same time, follow the requirements of today’s quality winemaking. We are aware that we still need to gain plenty of experience, so we

plan ahead for 300 years. Old va-rieties, like Olaszrizling, Hárslevelű, Furmint, Kadarka and Kékfrankos take priority here. We seek to know more about our terroirs and par-cels, to improve our cultivation and also to adjust the steps of our win-emaking according to the different varieties.

Eger wine region is located in the North-East of Hungary, at the foot of the Bükk Mountains. An area of unique possibilities, where the cultivation of both red and white grapes has been widespread. The climate of this wine region is rather cool, and it is duly rep-resented in the wines’ character, namely in their exciting acidity, rich aromas, not overpoweringly present tannins and their elegance.None of these would be realized if Eger did not have a soil so fundamentally rich in character. It is complex and varied. Here the lower layer rhyolite tuff of volcanic origin dominates, and is covered by hard, deep brown soil rich in clay. Moreover, composi-tion of the soil in the slopes and vineyards is breathtakingly colourful and unique, where lime, slate, zeolite, marl and sandstone, or a combination of these can be found, giving the wine a strong character.

Varied and wonderful! Not only the wines but also the landscape of the region. Nagy-Eged-hegy, the highest grape-pro-ducing hill of Hungary can be found here. With its height of 501 metres, uniquely lime-rich soil and south-facing exposure, predestined to be a birthplace of great wines. Right next to it, on the side of Kis-Eged-Mount, a 30-million-year-old grape leaf fossil, the “Vitis Hungarica” was found.

THE HISTORY OF THE WINE REGIONEger wine region’s great opportunities lie in its capability of producing both high quality red and white wines. Producing white wines was dominant for several centuries. However, Eger became internationally recognized for its red wine: Egri Bikavér. Grape has been cultivated in the Eger area since the time of the Árpád dynasty, and, similarly to other wine regions in the country, the role of foreign, primarily French monks and the church proved to be crucial. Until Turkish times only white grapes had been grown. The first red vines like Kadarka and the technique of maceration were introduced by the Rascians who were fleeing the Ottomans. Phylloxera appeared and eradicated nearly all vineyards in Eger in 1886. Most red grapes were introduced to the wine region during the regeneration after the disaster.Eger wines had, as it were, an acidity and long shelf life which required ageing in wooden barrels. Therefore, winemakers aged their wine in oak barrels placed in cellars providing natural cellar climate and carved in rhyolite tuff under the settlements. During the socialist era grape growing was centrally controlled in Hungary. In the decades preceding the change of regime Eger as well as all Hungarian winemaking was about mass-production and making huge quantities of table quality wines. Interestingly enough, most people can only recall Egri Bikavér as a red wine from that period, and it had undoubtedly become the most well-known Hungarian red wine of the time. Nevertheless, since the 1990’s wineries producing more consciously have started to work on remarketing Eger wines, having a new drive and aiming for higher quality. By now Eger has become the most exciting and most colourful representative of the renewal of Hungarian wines.

Using many varieties of grape has always been a characteristic of this wine region and, there-fore, the region has grown itself into the home of blended wines. The guidelines of the production of Egri Bikavér were created by the Society of Grape and Wine Growers of Eger in 1993. Later the system of communes was formed again, and in 1997 the 13 communes of Eger accepted the Egri Bikavér guidelines. A new blended white wine began its history in 2010 as a new commune brand: Egri Csillag. In 2013 a new strategy for the Eger wine region was accepted. Now it is clear that, besides the evident directions, it depends on us, winemakers, whether we will be able to make worthy wines using the right amount of responsibility, conscience and sacrifice for ourselves and for the future of Hungarian and Eger wine.

CLIMATIC CONDITIONSThe climatic condition of the Eger wine region is mainly affected by its proximity of the Bükk Mountains. This provides the main source of protection against winter frost, and it also creates a “mountain breeze” bringing a cold night after a warm summer or autumn day, thus this cli-mate ensures a fine, elegant sharpness and the presence of fruity aromas. All in all, we can say that Eger wines contain an exciting amount of acidity and long-lingering pleasant flavour.Annual rainfall: 550-600 mmAnnual average temperature: 10.5 °CAnnual hours of sunshine: 1900-2000 hours

ST.A NDR EAVINEYAR D ESTATETHE ESTATE OPERATES IN THE EGER WINE REGION. OUR AIM IS TO PRODUCE

WINES THAT CONVEY THE UNIQUE CHARACTER OF THIS WINE REGION, SUCH

AS EGRI BIKAVÉR AND EGRI CSILLAG.

The first and foremost importance in our mind is as follows: producing rich, quality fruit; learning about the local grape varieties; and renewing winemaking based on traditions. We wish to grow exciting wines fitting the characteristics of the wine region and pos-sessing a local concept. The direction of our vine cultivation is to grow resistant plants full of vitality, with an optimum yield and care depending on the vine. We especially deal with the enhancement of the living soil, by using compost and bacteria-based fertilisers. We avoid unnecessary or over-excessive use of pesticides and prefer envi-ronmental-friendly alternatives. Generally, we use Cordon de Royat training system in our vineyards.

CLIMAT FERENC-HEGYFerenc-hegy is one of Egerszalók’s emblem-atic slopes located on top of rhyolite tuff. The soil lacks nutrients and is thinner, which gives its wines a nice and elegant lightness. Height above sea level: approx. 240m, facing east, south-east. The area we own is 3.0 ha. Varieties: Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Kékfrankos.Number of vines: 6,200/ha

CLIMAT KOVÁSZÓThe top soil is similar to that of Ferenc-hegy, having a thin top layer, rich in clay and lean.It is a plateau, slightly leaning into a northern direction. Its height above sea level is around 220m. The area is 0.3 ha. Variety: Chardon-nay. Number of vines: 10,000/ha

EGERSZÓLÁTCLIMAT BOLDOGSÁGOSNearby Egerszólát there is a 13-million-year-

DEMJÉNCLIMAT HANGÁCS A vineyard with an outstandingly varied landscape, with a cauldron in the middle. Largely, it faces south. Its highest peak is the Messzelátó plateau, at the height of 220m. It features a thin, clay-rich soil on top of highly tuff-based subsoil. The wines made here have a rustic taste and of a tight and deter-mined structure. The area is 17.0 ha. Varieties: Kékfrankos, Kadarka, Merlot, Pinot Noir, Cabernet Franc, Turán, Hárslevelű, Leányka, Pinot Blanc and Sauvignon Blanc. Number of vines: 5,000/ha

EGERSZALÓKCLIMAT MAGYALOSThis slope can be found in the north of

Egerszalók. It has a deep, solid, clay-rich soil sitting on top of rhyolite tuff. It has a height above sea level of approximately 230 me-tres. It has southern, south-eastern exposure. Our area is 2.9 hectares. Varieties: Kadarka, Kékfrankos, Merlot.Number of vines: 6,200/ ha

CLIMAT PAPTAGIt can be found in the middle of Egerszalók. Its soil is deep, solid and clay-rich, on top of rhyolite tuff. It is on a top, facing south, south-west. The area is 5.1 ha, with varieties of Pinot Blanc, Chardonnay, Riesling, Viognier, Pinot Noir, Menoir, Merlot, Kékfrankos, Syrah and Cabernet Franc.Number of vines: 6,200/ha

OUR GR APES ST. ANDREA WINE ESTATE GROWS WINE IN FOUR DIFFERENT LOCALITIES, IN NINE

DIFFERENT VINEYARDS AND PLOTS. IN MOST OF THESE TERROIRS WE CAN FIND

VOLCANIC REMAINS OF RHYOLITE TUFF. THE TOP LAYERS ARE OF DIFFERENT DEPTHS

AND DENSITY BUT IN MOST CASES CONTAIN A CONSIDERABLE AMOUNT OF CLAY.

old rhyolite tuff spillage, which was layered by gravel and continental clay during the mid-Miocene. A lower layer of tuff can be found, covered in thin clay-rich soil. It faces south, south-east, with a maximum height of about 220m.Our plot is a 5 ha area. Varieties are: Hárslevelű, Furmint, Leányka, Olaszrizling, Pinot Gris, Viognier and Sauvignin Blanc. Number of vines: 6,200/ha

EGERCLIMAT KIS-EGEDIt is situated on top of Oligocene deep-sea

creations, marly clay of Kiscell and Eger. The soil which is slightly acidic, with some slate and tuff, lacking humus but abundant in min-erals produces especially tasty wines. It faces east. The area is 0.8 ha with varieties of pinot noir and zweigelt. The number of vines is 6,000-9,000/ha.

CLIMAT NAGY-EGED-HEGYGreat-Eged Mountain’s rock is unique: in-stead of rhyolite tuff, it sits on grey limestone from the Triassic era. From the sea, a clay-based yellowish-whitish sediment called nummulite clay was deposited on top of this

base. This is the most characteristic compo-nent of Great Eged Mountain’s undersoil to-day. The top soil is thin rendzina. The slope has an outstanding microclimate. As the sun’s rays reach the surface in a near 90-degree angle, the rocky limestone reflects them, heating up the temperature above the soil by several degrees centigrade. Here spring comes early. The steep, south-facing slopes and relatively thin top layer make rainwater run down quick-ly, creating a moderately dry hillside.Area: 6.5 ha. Varieties: Kékfrankos, Kadarka,

Csóka, Pinot Noir, Syrah, Merlot, Chardonnay and Furmint. Number of vines: 6,200-10,000/ha

CLIMAT NAGY-EGEDThe area belonging to the base, the “skirt” of Great Eged Mountain provides a rare lime-stone base for its top soil which is rich in hum-mus. The area is 5.0 ha. Varieties: Kékfrankos, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc. Number of vines: 4,000/ha

CELL A ROur classic cellar, carved into tuff is located in the Öreghegy of Egerszalók. Five cellar branches pro-vide the space for traditional fermentation and ageing in wooden barrels. Nearly 300 oak bar-rels are available in the cellar. Here the ageing and storage of bottled wines take place at the desired temperature. In our winegrowing we focus particularly on gathering experience in relation to the different varieties. Most of our white wines are fermented in 3-5 hectolitre wooden barrels. How-ever, wines fermented in stainless steel-tanks that can be cooled are also blended in the classic Egri Csillag. For making red wines, besides the tradi-tional vats, open wooden and stainless steel vats we also use stainless steel vats. We analyse the effects of pumping over by hand using the same tank again after filtration. To age the wine we use 5 hectolitre barrels, which are becoming wide-spread, but since 2012 we have also been using large, 20-40 hectolitre ones to achieve a fine, no-ble character wine. Being an Eger wineproducer, blending is of upmost importance here, through this method we try to achieve the best possible balance each vintage.
