THE THEME

The Fourth Sunday of Easter is also

called Good Shepherd Sunday. The

images of gentleness, strength, confi-

dence, self-sacrifice, hard work and

peace are what we want to be as par-

ents or grandparents, friends or colleagues, even as

a pastor. Let us pray today to be followers of the

true Shepherd and imitators of him.

APRIL 28/29, 2012 ST. ANDREW R.C. CHURCH

From Fr. Peter’s Desk 4th Sunday of Easter

Dear Parish Family,

The fourth Sunday of Easter is

called “Good Shepherd Sunday”.

The Gospel recalls the reassuring words of Jesus that

he will watch over His flock and protect it from the

dangers of the enemy. We all look for a God who ca-

res and is concerned about us. The readings today pro-

claim that truth. God does care. God is our loving

shepherd. This is one reason that Psalm 23 has such

universal appeal. The image of the Shepherd who ca-

res and guides and protects is one that brings comfort

and hope.

The image of the shepherd was also one that appealed

to the early Christians and was among the most popu-

larly depicted images in the early centuries of the

Church. Pope Benedict draws attention to this in his

encyclical ‘Spe Salvi’. As he says, in Roman art the

image of the shepherd was an expression of the dream

of a tranquil and simple life. But the Christian symbol

of the shepherd brings with it a new meaning and a

deeper content “The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not

want.. .Even though I walk through the valley of the

shadow of death, I fear no evil, because you are with

me..’ (Ps23:1,4). The true shepherd is one who knows

even the path that passed through the valley of death;

one who walks with me even on the path of final soli-

tude, where no one can accompany me, guiding me

through; he himself has walked through the path, he

has descended into the kingdom of death, he has con-

quered death, and he has returned to accompany us

now to give us certainty that, together with him, we

can find a way through. The realization that there is

One who even in death accompanies me and ‘with his

rod and staff comforts me’, so that ‘I fear no evil’, this

was the new hope that arose over the life of believers.”

Jesus is the gateway to a new and abundant life. When

we search for security outside of him we find only

chaos. But with the Lord Jesus we find salvation. We

find new life here on earth, and we enter upon the

pathway that leads to the restful waters and verdant

pastures of heaven. The Eucharist is a constant re-

minder that the good shepherd has prepared a banquet

for us. May our participation in the Eucharist draw us

into closer communion with him and enable us to fol-

low always the path along which he leads us.

STEWARDSHIP Stewardship Reflection

To be good stewards we must be good

shepherds, willing to lay down our lives

for those committed to our care, not mere

hired hands who run off, “leaving the

sheep to be snatched and scattered by the

wolf.”

Living Stewardship

We are grateful this week for all stewards in our parish

who stand ready to assist their neighbors through

attendance and support for community activities such

as police, fire and rescue.
