SERVICE THEME:Servants with a Purpose

WELCOME — We are so pleased that you have joined us for worship today! If you are a guest with us, please sign our guest register, which is located in the center entryway of the church. We welcome and encourage children to join our worship services! Enclosed “cry rooms” are available in the back of the church near the restrooms, if your child becomes restless. Pictorial children’s Bibles are available for children to use, on the table in the back of church. Please let us know if there is any other way we can be of service to you. Again, welcome! OUR MISSION — The mission of St. Andrew Lutheran Church is to guide people to know Jesus as their Savior, to grow in their faith, and to show Jesus to others. OUR BELIEF — We believe that the Bible is the inspired Word of God and the only source of all Christian doctrine and teaching. We believe that the only true God is the Triune God: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. We believe that we are saved not by anything we do, but only through faith in Jesus Christ, who gave his life for our sins. We will be happy to tell you more about what we believe! OUR HISTORY — St. Andrew Lutheran Church was established in 1888 and is a member of the Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod (WELS), a confessional Lutheran church body with over 1,200 congregations in North America and with more than 30 sister church bodies worldwide.

Jesus appears as the “Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world.” This Lamb would take away the sins of the world and bring both Israel and the Gentile nations into the kingdom of God. The hearts that see this Savior in faith cannot help but take news of this salvation to the ends of the earth.

WELCOME AND INTRODUCTION TO TODAY’S SERVICE

SPECIAL PRAYER REQUESTS – At this time, anyone may share special prayer requests with the pastor, which he will then pray about later in the worship service, during the Prayer of the Church.  If you prefer to submit a written prayer request, you may do so before the service or hand it to an usher during the offering.  As a family of believers, we want to know each other’s joys and struggles, so that we can pray for each other.

OPENING HYMN – 20 – When All the World Was Cursed

INVOCATIONM: In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.C: Amen.

CONFESSION OF SINSM: Beloved in the Lord: let us draw near with a true heart and confess our sins to God our Father, asking him in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to grant us forgiveness.C: Holy and merciful Father, I confess that I am by nature sinful and that I have disobeyed you in my thoughts, words, and actions. I have done what is evil and failed to do what is good. For this I deserve your punishment both now and in eternity. But I am truly sorry for my sins, and trusting in my Savior Jesus Christ, I pray: Lord, have mercy on me, a sinner.

PRAYER OF THE DAYM: The Lord be with you.C: And also with you.M: Let us pray.

Almighty God, you gave your one and only Son to be the light of the world. Grant that your people, illumined by your Word and sacraments, may shine with the radiance of Christ’s glory, that he may be known, worshiped, and believed to the ends of the earth; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who with you and the Holy Spirit lives and reigns, one God, now and forever.

C: Amen.

FIRST LESSON – Isaiah 49:1-7 (EHV) Listen to me, you coastlands.Pay attention, you faraway peoples! The LORD called me from the womb. When I was inside my mother, he mentioned my name.2He made my mouth like a sharpened sword. He hid me in the shadow of his hand.He made me a polished arrow. He concealed me in his quiver.3He said to me, “You are my servant Israel,in whom I will display my glory.”4But I said to myself, “I have labored in vain.I spent my strength and came up empty, with nothing.Yet a just verdict for me rests with the LORD,and my reward is with my God.”5But now the LORD,

who formed me from the womb to be his servant,to turn Jacob back to him,so that Israel might be gathered to him,so that I will be honored in the eyes of the LORD,because my God has been my strength—

6the LORD said:It is too small a thing that you should just be my servant

to raise up only the tribes of Jacoband to restore the ones I have preserved in Israel,

so I will appoint you to be a light for the nations,so that my salvation will be known to the end of the earth.

7This is what the LORD, the Redeemer of Israel, its Holy One,says to the one deeply despised,to the one who is detested by the nation,to the servant of rulers.

Kings will see and stand up.Officials will see and bow down, because of the LORD, who is faithful, because of the Holy One of Israel, who has chosen you.

PSALM OF THE DAY – Psalm 89 – CW p. 98

SECOND LESSON – Acts 13:38-49 (EHV) 38“So, gentlemen, brothers, let it be known to you that through this

Jesus forgiveness of sins is being proclaimed to you, also forgiveness from everything from which you could not be justified through the law of Moses. 39In this Jesus, everyone who believes is justified. 40So watch out that what is said in the prophets does not happen to you:

41Look, you scoffers,be amazed and perish! For I am going to do something in your days, something you would never believe, even if someone were to explain it to you.”

42As Paul and Barnabas were leaving, the people kept begging them to speak again on this same subject on the next Sabbath. 43When the meeting of the synagogue had been dismissed, many of the Jews and devout converts to Judaism followed Paul and Barnabas, who talked with them and urged them to continue in the grace of God.

44On the next Sabbath almost the whole city gathered to hear the word of God. 45But when the Jews saw the crowds, they were filled with envy and began to contradict what Paul was saying by slandering him.

46Then Paul and Barnabas responded fearlessly, “It was necessary that God's word be spoken to you first. But since you reject it and consider yourselves unworthy of eternal life, look: We are now turning to the Gentiles! 47For this is what the Lord has instructed us:

I have made you a light for the Gentiles, that you may bring salvation to the end of the earth.”

48When the Gentiles heard this, they were rejoicing and praising the word of the Lord. All who had been appointed for eternal life believed.

49And the word of the Lord was being carried through the whole region.

VERSE OF THE DAY M: Alleluia. He said to me, “You are my servant in whom I will display my splendor.” Alleluia. (Isaiah 49:3, NIV)

GOSPEL – Luke 16:19-31 (EHV)After the announcement of the Gospel, the congregation sings:

29The next day, John saw Jesus coming toward him and said, “Look! The Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world! 30This is the one I was talking about when I said, ‘The one coming after me outranks me because he existed before me.’ 31I myself did not know who he was, but I came baptizing with water so that he would be revealed to Israel.”

32John also testified, “I saw the Spirit descend like a dove from heaven and remain on him. 33I myself did not recognize him, but the one who sent me to baptize with water said to me, ‘The one on whom you see the Spirit descend and remain, he is the one who will baptize with the Holy Spirit.’ 34I saw this myself and have testified that this is the Son of God.”

35The next day, John was standing there again with two of his disciples. 36When John saw Jesus passing by, he said, “Look! The Lamb of God!” 37The two disciples heard him say this, and they followed Jesus.

38When Jesus turned around and saw them following him, he asked, “What are you looking for?”

They said to him, “Rabbi” (which means “Teacher”), “where are you staying?”

39He told them, “Come, and you will see.” So they came and saw where he was staying. They stayed with him that day. It was about the tenth hour.

40Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, was one of the two who heard John and followed Jesus. 41The first thing Andrew did was to find his

own brother Simon and say to him, “We have found the Messiah!” (which is translated “the Christ”).

After the reading of the Gospel, the congregation sings:

NICENE CREEDWe believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven

and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally

begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation, he came down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the virgin Mary, and became fully human. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate. He suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who in unity with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy Christian and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen.

for the WELS National Conference on Lutheran Leadership:Father of all, some things never change: our sinful nature and

actions, and your forgiveness despite our wicked actions. At this week’s synod-wide Lutheran Leadership Conference in downtown Chicago, bless the attendees as they think about new ways to share your Good News with a sin-sick world.
