Page Three

My dear family of St. Andrew the Apostle! The Three Wise Men are wise because they searched for and found what is truly worthwhile in this life: they searched for truth and meaning. A wise woman once wrote, “Though a person may run as fast as he can away from Christ, if it is toward what he considers true, he runs in fact straight into the arms of Christ.” These words were the reflection of a French philosopher, Christian mystic, and political activist by the name of Simone Weil. Wisdom is a gift of the Holy Spirit, a gift within our soul that helps us see the world and all reality as God sees it — and in this Extraordainary Jubilee Year of Mercy, we can say as wise people of God and followers of Christ that God sees the world, and so are we called to see the world, with eyes of mercy. From the very beginning of his pontificate, Pope Francis has focused on God’s mercy towards the whole world. Reflecting on the Gospel of Jesus forgiving the woman caught in adultery who others presented to Jesus for stoning, the Holy Father said that mercy is the key point of that Gospel account. “Mercy is the Lord’s most powerful message…. It is not easy to trust oneself to the mercy of God, because it is an unfathomable abyss — but we must do it,” the pope continued. God has the ability to forget, which is special: he forgets our sins, he kisses you, he embraces you, and he says to you, “Neither do I condemn you. Go, and from now on, sin no more.” That’s the amazing counsel Jesus gives us all. “We ask for the grace of never tiring of asking pardon, for he never tires of pardoning,” the pope concluded. Our culture needs God. We all need God. We all stand in need of His mercy. A true story of a dying man reveals the great need we have for forgiveness and mercy, and the desire God has to forgive us, if we but let him! This dying man in California shared this story with a visiting priest who was called to the hospital to attend him as he lay dying. Forty years previously this dying man had worked on a railway signals box. Everything was done manually in those days. It was Christmas time, and he had been drinking. When the train was approaching he pulled the wrong lev-er. The train went down the wrong track and collided into a car as it was crossing the lines. A woman and her two chil-dren were killed instantly. He told the priest that from that day onwards he had lived with the guilt of that accident. He kept to himself, never married, and gave up on life. He lived in quiet despair. The priest, who had been listening very intently, asked him a few questions about the date and time of the accident. Then he said to the dying man, “I want you to listen closely to me. You did not know this. But there was another little boy in that car. He lived. And when he grew up he became a priest. And he is speaking with you right now! And I want you to know, I forgive you.” That man, who had spent his whole life in such an awful prison of self-hate, guilt and self-recrimination, was able to hear from the priest the words of forgiveness that set him free. He was finally able to forgive himself as he heard the words of absolution from the priest, but also the words of forgiveness from the little boy who had lost his mother and siblings in an accident 40 years previously. He died in peace… Many people around us, including ourselves at times, are dogged by feelings of anxiety and guilt about past sins — but God’s mercy is an expression of His great love for us and the call that we need to learn to love ourselves. We must first believe He has forgiven us our sins when we have truly repented. No matter what we or others have done, God truly wants to forgive — as Pope Francis says repeatedly, God never tires of forgiving us, so we should never tire of asking for mercy and forgiveness. God does not hold an accusing finger pointing towards us, nor has he been counting our faults with the intention of paying us back with future punishment. Once we have truly and sincere-ly repented we receive the free gift of His forgiveness. Basking in the sure knowledge of His unconditional love for us we can let go of the condemning attitude we have had toward ourselves. Looking into the merciful eyes of Jesus we find ourselves again. And then our eyes can become a reflection of God’s mercy and forgiveness for others. One last story to show the power of forgiveness and mercy: Mary Johnson lost her son in 1993 after a then-teenaged Oshea Israel got into a fight with him at a party, and shot him. With so much unanswered, Mary went to visit Oshea in jail. After their first contact, “I began to feel this movement in my feet,” Mary said. She told Oshea that “It moved up my legs, and it just moved up my body. When I felt it leave me, I instantly knew that all that anger and ha-tred and animosity I had in my heart for you for twelve years was over. I had totally forgiven you.” The two now live as neighbors in the same duplex, and Mary Johnson has even referred to Oshea Israel as “son” in interviews. Speaking on such an occasion Oshea told Mary, “I admire you for your being brave enough to offer forgiveness, and for being brave enough to take that step…. It motivates me to make sure that I stay on the right path.” In this new year of grace 2016, let us be filled with God’s wisdom, a wisdom that sees life with eyes of forgiveness and mercy! In the loving Hearts of Jesus and Mary, Fr. Gregor

Celebrating the Jubilee Year of Mercy

This Extraordinary Jubilee Year of Mercy offers both an invitation and a opportunity for us as Catholics, whatever our ages or vocations, to partake of the graces of this year, promoting it in our families and parishes, and inviting those who have fall-en away to return and receive the blessing of God’s gracious and merciful love. May we celebrate well this special Holy Year

that we might experience more profoundly the “mercy of God in the face of Jesus.”

Excerpt form December 2015, Christ is Our Hope by Auxiliary Bishop Joseph M. Siegel

LOOKING IN THE RIGHT PLACES

“Appearances can be deceiving,” as the saying goes. As we celebrate the epiphania, the “appearing” of the eternal Word of God on earth, this is still true. What rapturous foresight must have filled Isaiah as he wrote the words we hear today. How, for four hundred years, they must have filled the hearts of the people of Israel with hope for the day when God’s glory would shine on them. How deceived some must have felt when the glory of God came to them in the lowliest and humblest of human lives. We have many expectations about how the divine presence will appear among us. But we can also set ourselves up, through these expectations, to miss the divine glory when it truly appears. We get caught up in looking for the star, forgetting that the star is not the divine sign, the babe is. It may take a persistent journey for us to come upon the true appearance of God’s glory in our lives: Jesus Christ. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

Giving Tree Report 2015

It was a very good year. 74 Families Registered. St. Vincent DePaul received 30 envelopes and maybe more that were left in the Parish Office. Prison Ministry received 25 gifts and 22 gift cards to buy other supplies that they need.

There were 227 Children in all. 22 of these children did not get a gift but the tags were removed from the tree. We received 72 gift cards, 22 were given as the missing gifts and the rest were given to families.

I wish to thank all that made this year a very happy one and all of the families seemed to be very pleased. Wishing all of my workers a Merry Christmas, and hope the New Year brings many wonderful blessings, good health, and much happiness.

GRANT ETERNAL REST, LIGHT AND PEACE TO ALL FAITHFUL DEPARTED:

Please call the parish office by Monday at (815) 886-4165 for the name of your loved one to be placed for 3 weeks on our short term prayer list. Also, please call the parish office, if you are hospitalized and would like a visit from our hospital ministry team or homebound and in need of communion.

Hospital Visitation of Parishioners

Please remember that if you or any family members find yourselves in a hospital, be sure to let them know you are a parishioner at St. Andrew’s — it doesn’t hurt to say it a few times, either! Whenever we priests, deacons or Eucharistic Ministers come to visit, we check the hospital list of parishioners printed under “St. Andrew.” But if you’re not listed as a parishioner of St. Andrew, we won’t know you’re even there! We do not want to miss you! You can always call us, too, at the office, ext. 301. Thank you. May the Lord Jesus be with you all your days, to love and be loved by Him, to honor and serve Him, as He honors and serves us!
