On Sunday we shall gather the community of St Andrew's College to commemorate Remembrance Day.

We gather not to glorify war, but to reflect upon the Andreans who, through a sense of service to their fellow humanity, stepped forward to do their duty so that we may live in peace.

Remembrance Day also allows us to pause and reflect on our own lives and to give thanks for our own country, which, having faced so many challenges, now stands as a model of democracy and peaceful conflict resolution. That our life, our energy, and our achievements glorify peace, and symbolise that unique giftedness that God has set aside for each of us.

That which to millions, through war, has been denied.

A living memorial - what an awesome responsibility. Do we have any choice but to give our very best, to stand proud, and to continuously and without rest pursue excellence?

Nor do we gather to honour war, though. Instead, every day that we wake up in a peaceful democracy we should give thanks to God that our time in this place, though challenging, is blessed with peace. Let us never forget that, or take it for granted.

I commit St Andrew's College anew as a living memorial to those Andreans who gave their lives in the service of their country. A centre of excellence in our community that stands for service and leadership through service. Let us never forget our roots or our purpose. And as their memory becomes more distant, let us never forget them. The receding memory of war is the gift that they have left us.

I sometimes wonder how I would respond were I called to war. Young boys - think of our Matric boys - so full of life and energy, their whole lives before them - these are the people who answered that call in the two great wars, and others, and gave their lives so that we could live in peace. It is an incredible demand to have made upon one. I am not sure how many of us would or could have answered it, and incredible as it is, it was answered. It is in honour of their life that St Andrew's stands, our life, energy, enthusiasm as a symbol of the life that they gave.

When we speak of excellence, it is because we owe them no less. We owe ourselves no less. When we talk of commitment, it is because, as living monuments, our example needs to be monumental. When we talk of St Andrew's, it is of a school that is a positive contributor to our community, a positive contributor to our country, a school where we serve to honour service. As living monuments we can do no less.

God Bless

The 'trek' back to The Cawse LibraryIt was with great excitement and enthusiasm that the library staff, a stooge, library monitors and some pupils began to pack up the temporary library on Friday afternoon last week, under the guidance of librarian, Mrs Vuyo Jamieson. The move back to the newly renovated Cawse Library began on Monday with boxes and boxes of books, furniture and equipment being moved by Mickey Witthuhn, Jenny Wilkinson and members of their amazing teams. The staff and pupils have been unpacking during the course of the week. The official re-opening of The Cawse Library is on Friday 17 November.

Thomas and Michael Stavridis

Interview with the Stavridis twins, Thomas and Michael by Mrs Jamieson

As a College Librarian I’m often fascinated by the unique stories that often emerge from random chats with the boys who visit the library and on campus in general. I recently had a stimulating conversation which resulted in a quick interview with Michael and Thomas, who are not only frequent faces in the library but have intentionally engaged others into conversations about reading.

There are endless reasons why boys are not able to get a good book and read. Apart from a “full schedule”, “sporting commitments”; “Lack of Time to read” is cited highest amongst the challenges boys are faced with. But Michael and Thomas say there is time to read at College. They say there are several ways boys can achieve this. Here’s how:

• The twins told me that they have influenced the Espin Grade 9 dorm to start reading. “If you read 10 pages a night, you can end up reading an average size book in 15 days” said Thomas.

• Michael has encouraged all his friends to read. He says reading abilities don’t matter as long as you train your mind to read by reading a lot.

I was impressed with the way these boys opened their interview session on Wednesday 01st November 2017. “Swearing is for the simple minded ma’am”, Thomas said as we entered my office. When I probed a bit about what this meant, the twins passionately explained to me how it works. “You swear less because of reading.” “You swear because you are unintelligent.” They went on to say reading helps you acquire the correct vocabulary to use in an argument, and most often swear words are not the first thing that come to mind.

Michael and Thomas mentioned just a few benefits brought by reading:• Reading is good for your brain• It is food for the mind• It increases your vocabulary• It improves your marks, especially English. • It changes the way you speak because the way you structure your sentences improves.

I then asked the twins the following questions to end off:

Does it matter what you read?

The twins said that their dad is a huge influence in their lives and he said it doesn’t matter what you read as long as you are reading. It can be a magazine, news items on your phone etc. “The more you read the smarter you get”, Thomas said.

Most often I don’t get to see the face of a boy lying on the comfortable bean bags, the book mostly replaces the face. My curious greetings have earned me some much needed conversations about reading. The common trend in my chats with the boys is that boys want to read but they often struggle to find time to do so.

Michael and Thomas reveal some intelligent truths about reading. First of all, these two come from a family of readers. The boys fondly talk about their family, mom and dad who introduced each other to reading and in turn have influenced the boys to read since they were little. They speak fondly about their dad’s love for reading even though he only discovered it later in life. Apparently, their dad was introduced to reading after meeting their mom. The boys talk about their younger brother who loves reading and their 8-year old cousin who has read the Harry Potter series.

When asked how they encourage others to read, Thomas said, ‘model it’. He said there is no better way than modelling it and aim to get one person at a time. He compares ‘being new’ to reading to starting a new sport, “If you start you won’t stop”, he said.

In my endeavours to encourage boys to read at College I then realised that my job is not that difficult because the boys are doing this themselves, like Thomas said it… I need to focus on one story at a time and their story is what captured my heart this time. The boys are contributing to the strategic direction of the school by promoting reading.

Michael is currently reading The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo by Stieg Larson and he compares reading to his relationship with vegetables: “Reading is like a vegetable, you’ll never know if you like it until you try.”

Thomas is reading IT by Stephen King, the book contains more than 1000 pages and he is planning to finish it before he can see the movie.

“Try at least once in your life to sit down and read, or else you’ll never know if you’ll like it” says Thomas Stavridis.

College Reading & Watching Club will soon introduce a programme called ‘Extreme Reading’ in which they will encourage people to take a selfie reading in extreme places which will then be shared online on #Extremereading. Thomas and Michael are looking forward to participate in this programme, they have already identified the extreme places during their upcoming holidays.

The twins and their dad plan to donate their home collection of hot titles to The Cawse Library. The school is grateful to the Stavridis family for the donation and we look forward to College boys indulging in these. According to Michael, his dad said that if he could change one thing about his life, his choice would be to have read more when he was younger.

Food Technology Grade 8Ns enjoying a cooking lesson in the Food Technology room. They made all sorts of dishes: smoothies, toasted wraps, baked pastry roses, deep fried mars bars, ‘caradapples’, noodles and pizza cones.

The Spanish eveningLast Friday, Mrs Sylvia Israel-Akinbo came to show the Grade 8 Spanish Second Additional Language pupils how to dance the Salsa, giving the girls the opportunity to meet their new Spanish teacher (Ms Israel-Akinbo will take over Ms Vicent’s class next year). Sylvia learnt the Spanish language and about the culture during the five years she and her family lived in Columbia – and of course, also learned the dances.

‘Salsa’ is a Spanish word that means ‘sauce’, because this dance is full of different influences, all mixed together. This popular form of dance originated in the mid-1970s in New York City with strong influences from Latin America, particularly Puerto Rico, and Cuba. It includes element of the cha-cha-cha, the mambo and other dance forms. The pupils had great fun making their own ‘salsa’ – learning the basic movements and mixing them to develop their own unique styles. The result was beautiful!

After a few dances, the pupils were rewarded with some arroz con leche, a dessert speciality from South America, which Sylvia had kindly prepared for our salsa beginners.

A special thank you to Sylvia!

Senior Open ConcertWednesday 1 November saw the last of this year's seven Senior Open Concerts take place in the Music School auditorium. There were a total of twenty different performances, many of which were of a very high standard. Most of the performers were using this platform to help them prepare for the Trinity College Music Examinations taking place this week. Highlights included: Daniel Erasmus playing the 1st movement of the Haydn cello concerto with style and grace; Robyn Hendricks’ very cool Castle Ward by June Armstrong; Music Scholar Asive Ngcebetsha playing the third movement of Seitz’s violin concerto with such aplomb; Jacque Hoefnagels’ charming performance of the cheeky Sour Lemons by Alexander on piano; and the newly-formed Coward Piano Trio performing a piece entitled Swinging Willows by Helyer which was great fun. The concert ended with Miles Jackson and Sean Howard performing the terminally groovy Smooth by the inimitable Santana.

To the delight of all the Music Staff, the auditorium was full with listeners who all left well-satisfied at the end of the concert. Many thanks to those who attended for their support.

Junior Round Square Conference 2018

The Junior African Regional Conference for 2018 is being hosted by St Constantine’s International School in Tanzania from 17 to 21 February 2018. Conference attendance is open to all current Grade 8s and 9s. We are looking to take a delegation of six boys who will depart for the conference on the 16 February and travel to Tanzania. This will be St Andrew’s fourth Round Square Conference and the first regional conference attended as full international member.

The boys will spend the week immersed in activities celebrating the theme of “Utamundi” – Cultural Heritage. The conference will explore the Round Square Ideals of Internationalism, Democracy, Environmentalism, Adventure, Leadership and Service and is a phenomenal opportunity for boys to be immersed in a different learning environment. Delegates from all over Africa will be attending and this provides an ideal opportunity for networking and personal growth for the boys who are able to attend.

The conferences are always very enriching with the exposure to different keynote speakers, Barrazzas (student led discussion groups), an adventure component as well as a service opportunity. Some of the keynote speakers for the conference include: Ali A. Mufuruki, a Tanzanian entrepreneur, philanthropist, public speaker and leadership coach; Edward Loure, a Tanzanian tribal activist and member of the Maasai people; Mustafa Hassanali, a Tanzanian fashion designer and a qualified doctor and Rebecca Corey, the Co-founder and Executive Director of the Tanzania Heritage Project.

Round Square was founded by Kurt Hahn who also founded Outward Bound and the Duke of Edinburgh Award, upon which the President’s Award is based. He believed that all learners should be exposed to a holistic, multidisciplinary education. The meeting of like-minded individuals from across the African continent is a brilliant platform to help stimulate global awareness, leadership and a sense of adventure in our boys.

For more information regarding the conference and to book a spot for your son, please email Natasha Pretorius on [email protected].

SPORTSaturday saw a good day of derby cricket being played against Graeme College. The 1st XI pulled off a good win after being in early trouble at 24/3 on a wicket that assisted the bowlers early on. A very good innings of 91 by captain, Chris Benjamin, with good support from Guy Rushmere and young debutant, Callum Francis, saw College post a very good 244 all out. In reply, Graeme College made a solid start to the run-chase but the introduction of leg-spinner, James Quarmby, ripped the fight out of them and College bowled them out for just 98. The 2nd XI had another tough outing against Cuylerville Country Club but put in an encouraging performance, whilst the 3rd XI narrowly went down to Graeme College 2nds. The rest of the College sides had solid wins. The Inter-House competition continues but has been hampered by rain this week. This weekend we will play matches against Pearson High School at 1st, 2nd, 3rd, U15A and U14A level. The remaining teams will be involved in internal games. The 1st XI game will start on Lower Field at 09h30. The rain this week has interfered with a couple of opportunities for our boys to get exposure to the Eastern Province coaching staff, however we were able to still get in a session for our leg-spinners with Adi Birrell (OA), Proteas Assistant Coach. The annual Scriberians match against the Colts XI will take place on Sunday on Lower. This is always an eagerly-awaited fixture and a good way for the Colts to move through to the open division next year.

Last Friday saw the drawing to a close of the Football Club season with games against Ntsika High School that afternoon, the 1st XI drawing 3-3 and the Junior side winning 5-0, and a successful Inaugural Club Dinner that night. The evening was a fitting celebration of all that has been achieved this year and was another milestone in the establishment of Football at College.

Dylan Marx attended the U15 Eastern Province tennis trials last weekend and really did himself proud, winning all his round robin games and then going on to win the final. He has consequently been selected for the EP U15 side to play at the inter-provincial tournament next year. Well done to him! On Friday the Stayers Tennis teams will be playing their last fixture of the year against Kingswood College with the 1st Team away and the U15A side at the DSG.

The Basketball Club held a series of internal games last Saturday, including a match between the Stayers and the Leavers. This was enjoyed by all and was a fitting send-off for the Matric boys. This Friday the 1st Team will take on Kingswood College in their Indoor Centre.

Friday evening also sees the Annual Inter-House Water Polo event taking place. This is always an eagerly awaited event and should provide plenty of competition and loads of fun.

Lastly, I would like to take this opportunity to thank all those that have had an input into College sport this year. We are indeed fortunate to have a band of enthusiastic and competent coaches across the board and it is quite remarkable to see the level of commitment shown by staff and student coaches in nurturing the talents of the boys. There is no doubt that it has been an exceptional year for College sport and the boys are to be commended on their hard work and dedication to whichever sport they have played. They have provided wonderful entertainment and achieved considerable success. The support staff at College are really special. They go out of their way to ensure that the boys play on excellent facilities and that they have all the necessary support to achieve their potential. Finally, I would like to thank all the parents for your amazing support of your boys in so many ways, whether it is here at school or at the various festivals and competitions around the country. I am sure that they really appreciate the opportunities that you afford them.

I will be leaving for the John Jones Fish River Journey next week so will take this opportunity to wish you all a wonderful festive season with your families and a Blessed Christmas.

Kind regards
