WELCOME TO WORSHIP We hope your time here will be a blessing for you. We would like to give you information about the various ministries of the Parish: please ask one of the Welcomers or Sidespersons for a Parish Information Pack.

ST ANDREW Though Andrew is named among the apostles in the gospels of Matthew, Mark and Luke, it is in John's gospel that most is learned about him. Andrew was a Galilean fisherman, mending his nets, when Jesus called him to follow him, which he promptly did. He then seems to have remained with Jesus until the end. He was there at the feeding of the five thousand and then later, when some Greeks in Jerusalem wanted to see Jesus, Philip brought them to Andrew who told Jesus of their desire. Tradition has him travelling on several missionary journeys and eventually being martyred by being crucified on an X-shaped cross. He became the patron saint of Scotland because of a legend that his relics had been brought there in the eighth century. PRAYER OF THE DAY Everliving God, Whose apostle Andrew heard the call of your Son And followed, bringing his brother with him: Inspire us, like him, To offer ourselves readily for your service And to tell others the good news of your kingdom; Through Jesus Christ our Lord, Who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit One God, now and for ever. Amen.

FIRST READING Deuteronomy 30: 11-14 A reading from the book of Deuteronomy 11 Surely, this commandment that I am commanding you today is not too hard for you, nor is it too far away. 12 It is not in heaven, that you should say, ‘Who will go up to heaven for us, and get it for us so that we may hear it and observe it?’ 13 Neither is it beyond the sea, that you should say, ‘Who will cross to the other side of the sea for us, and get it for us so that we may hear it and observe it?’ 14 No, the word is very near to you; it is in your mouth and in your heart for you to observe. Hear the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

Psalm 19: 1-6

Response: The commandment of the Lord is pure and gives light to the eyes.

1 The heavens declare the glory of God: and the firmament proclaims his handiwork; 2 One day tells it to another: and night to night communicates knowledge. ………………………………….....Response 3 There is no speech or language: nor are their voices heard; 4 Yet their sound has gone out through all the world: and their words to the ends of the earth. ………………………………….....Response 5 There he has pitched a tent for the sun: which comes out as a bridegroom from his chamber, and rejoices like a strong man to run his course. 6 Its rising is at one end of the heavens, and its circuit to their farthest bound:

and nothing is hidden from its heat. ………………………………………….....Response SECOND READING Romans 10: 8-18

The letter of Paul to the Romans 8 But what does it say? ‘The word is near you, on your lips and in your heart’ (that is, the word of faith that we proclaim); 9 because if you confess with your lips that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. 10 For one believes with the heart and so is justified, and one confesses with the mouth and so is saved. 11 The scripture says, ‘No one who believes in him will be put to shame.’ 12 For there is no distinction between Jew and Greek; the same Lord is Lord of all and is generous to all who call on him. 13 For, ‘Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved.’ 14 But how are they to call on one in whom they have not believed? And how are they to believe in one of whom they have never heard? And how are they to hear without someone to proclaim him? 15 And how are they to proclaim him unless they are sent? As it is written, ‘How beautiful are the feet of those who bring good news!’ 16 But not all have obeyed the good news; for Isaiah says, ‘Lord, who has believed our message?’ 17 So faith comes from what is heard, and what is heard comes through the word of Christ. 18 But I ask, have they not heard? Indeed they have; for ‘Their voice has gone out to all the earth, and their words to the ends of the world.’

Hear the Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

GOSPEL Matthew 4: 18-22

The Lord be with you. And also with you. Hear the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Luke. Glory to you Lord Jesus Christ. 18 As Jesus walked by the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon, who is called Peter, and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the lake—for they were fishermen. 19 And he said to them, ‘Follow me, and I will make you fish for people.’ 20 Immediately they left their nets and followed him. 21 As he went from there, he saw two other brothers, James son of Zebedee and his brother John, in the boat with their father Zebedee, mending their nets, and he called them. 22 Immediately they left the boat and their father, and followed him.

This is the Gospel of the Lord, Praise to you Lord Jesus Christ.

SENTENCE OF THE DAY

Andrew found his brother, told him, ‘We have found the Messiah!’, and then brought Simon to Jesus. John 1: 41-42

James and Andrew, Peter and John (Tune: Scarborough Fair)

James and Andrew, Peter and John, men of temper, talent and tide,

your nets are empty, empty and bare. Cast them now on the opposite side.

Jesus, you’re only a carpenter’s son: joints and joists are part of your trade, but ours the skill to harvest the deep.

Why presume to come to our aid?

Friends of mine and brothers thro’ love. I mean more than fishing for food. I call your skill to service my will,

call your lives to harvest the good.

Cast your nets where you think is right; spend your lives where you think is need;

but if you long for that which is best, let it be on my word you feed.

Stir then the waters, Lord, stir up the wind; stir the hope that needs to be stretched; stir up the love that needs to be ground;

stir the faith that needs to be fetched.

James and Andrew, Peter and John, and the women close by his side,

hear how the Lord calls each by their name, asking all to turn like the tide.

Words: John I. Bell (b 1949) & Graham Maule (b. 1958)

Charity of the Month - Archbishop’s November Appeal The Province of Queensland's Archbishop's November Appeal this year supports the work of Newton Theological College in Papua New Guinea. Located in PNG’s Oro Province, Newton Theological College is the only facility in PNG that trains men for priesthood in the Anglican Church. At any one time there are up to 22 students living on the campus, often accompanied by their

wives and children. The diploma course is largely residential, with time also spent in parishes. The aim of the diploma course is to introduce all students to the basic theological disciplines, but with a growing emphasis on doing theology from a PNG perspective. The appeal is seeking to raise $60,000 for Newton Theological College to provide: • Student study materials (writing pads, pens and a bible or text book). • Much needed water tanks for use by the college residents. • Contribution to the annual allowances for the lecturers. • Establishment and stocking of a chicken run (to address shortage of protein among

students). • A hand sewing machine for each woman in the Literacy and Life Skills program. Your support of the 2019 Province of Queensland's Archbishop's November Appeal will help the Anglican Church of Papua New Guinea to grow stronger by empowering their future leaders and their families. For more information see www.abmission.org/appeals.php/153/november-appeal-2019

The Parish Council would like to present an Alpha Course at St Andrew’s early next year, on Fridays 9.30am—11.30am, commencing 31 January and finishing 3 April (just before Easter).

The Alpha Course is presented on DVD over 10 weekly sessions plus Saturday 7 March, when we learn more about the Holy Spirit. The course is an overview of the Christian faith so it is great for those who have questions or

want to investigate Christianity as well as being a back to basics course for Christians. Into the bargain, it’s a chance to make new friends and have fun together.

The presentations by Nicky Gumbel from a London Anglican Church, are full of lighthearted illustrations so they are easy to listen to. A morning tea as well as a small group discussion are part of each session, giving people an opportunity to ask questions or share their views.

There will be brochures on our pews about our Alpha Course. Please add your name and contact details if you are interested in participating or helping when the list is circulated. Speak to Rev Timothy, Cathy Richards or Anne Bowyer for more information.

Thought for the day

One of my favourite prayers is a collect for St Andrew:

Christ, whose insistent call disturbs our settled lives, Give us discernment to hear your word,

grace to relinquish our tasks, and courage to follow empty-handed

wherever you may lead that the voice of your gospel

may reach to the ends of the earth. Amen.

As we read in the gospel, Andrew, with his brother Simon responded to Jesus’ call by ‘immediately’ following. They could not know what Jesus was leading them towards, but there was something about Jesus that gave them the confidence that to follow into this unknown future was the right thing to do. St Paul calls this our ‘hope’, the uncompromising assurance that God is a faithful God and his promises true.

In our lives we often face an unclear future, and indeed as we celebrate out patronal festival in the parish once again there are uncertainties as to what lies ahead. Perhaps this prayer will reassure us of the hope that Christ brings.

So, as St Paul says, “May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that you may abound in hope by the power of the Holy Spirit” (Romans 15:13)

Rev’d Timothy

Help needed!

Training is available if you are interested, but do not feel you have the skills. Please speak to Rev’d Timothy if you think you may be able to help.
