Father Doyle

“Jesus revealed that God is Father in an unheard-of sense…” (CCC, 240)

Merriam-Webster tells us that the term “father” refers to “a male parent” or “a man who has begotten a child.” In addition, we also sometimes apply the term to a man who serves as a model for a child (i.e. a “father-figure”). Therefore, logic dictates that we cannot call a person “father” unless he has a child or a child is involved in some way. So, what about God? We call God “our Father” all the time. How are we, then, to understand that title for Him?

Several times in Scripture, Jesus called God his “father.” In one sense, as I have noted before, this was not controversial. Many cultures viewed God as the creator, origin, and father of all things. But, Jesus used the term “father” in an “unheard-of sense”: he was calling God his father in a personal sense, just as we might call our earthly fathers “father.” In other words, Jesus was claiming that he was God’s Son, that God alone was the source of his existence and essence.

This claim had incredible implications. As the Pharisees rightly noted in Jn 10:33, this statement meant that Jesus himself was claiming to be God. Jesus could be implying nothing else: if God was the source of Jesus’ existence and essence, then Jesus himself must be equal to God and would be God. Such a claim drove the Pharisees crazy: they wanted to stone him for the crime of blasphemy, i.e. claiming to be God.

Yet, Jesus did not shy away from the claim. That was exactly what he was asserting. God the Father is not just Creator of all things and people, but also “he is eternally Father in relation to his only Son, who is eternally Son only in relation to his Father.” With this claim, Jesus introduced a revolutionary idea into the world: the idea that God is not a solitary Being, but a Being in communion, a Being with a personal relationship, a Father who has a Son.

This is heady stuff to ponder, to be certain. As I have said before, I myself do not completely understand it all. Yet, the Church has affirmed this mysterious relationship over and over again. We, too, affirm it in the Creed that we say every week: the Son is “consubstantial” with the Father, and that he is “eternally-begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God” (CCC, 242).

Even if we may not completely understand it, we believe it.

RELATIONSHIP WITH GOD Today’ s readings invite us into prayer, into relationship with God. Because relationships feel more natural when we know one another well, Sirach encourages us to know God better. In his wisdom, Sirach tells us what God is like: fair, open-minded, compassionate, and attentive. The Lord will not delay, he says. Knowing that God ’s help comes right on time, whenever we need it, calms our hearts and helps us trust the Lord. In his second Letter to Timothy, Saint Paul demonstrates his own trust in God. Despite the grueling struggles Saint Paul has faced because of his Christian faith, he praises the Lord for rescuing him time and again. Today ’s Gospel draws us close to Jesus too, revealing his special love for the poor and humble. As Jesus tells his parable about the prayer habits of a Pharisee and a tax collector, our hearts long to become as gentle as Christ ’s. Copyright (c) J. S. Paluch Co.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Friday’ s Solemnity of All Saints and Saturday ’s Commemoration of All the Faithful Departed fit well at the beginning of November. The liturgical readings of this final month in the Church year are keyed to the end of time and the fulfillment of Jesus ’ saving acts. Nowhere is this more fully celebrated than in Mexico, where November 2 is the Day of the Dead. Missionaries moved an ancient Aztec festival from midsummer to November, linking the festival to Christian themes. Today, it is a time for remembering the dead and celebrating the continuity of life, principally by festive picnics in cemeteries. There are special foods and games, and people socialize with other families and tell favorite stories about their dear ones. The sweetness of life is honored by sugary desserts and treats. Flowers, music, lights, and feasting assure that the day is not at all morbid. Traditionally, the day begins with Mass, a procession to the cemetery, and a morning feast. Most families have a special dinner with the pan de muerto, or bread of the dead. A toy skeleton is baked into the loaf, and the one who bites into it is considered lucky indeed. The dead are not feared, but deeply loved, and this joyful family feast points both to age-old customs and Resurrection faith. --James Field, Copyright (c) J. S. Paluch Co.

Principal’s Update Good morning St. Anne Parish. Happy Sunday.

I would like to welcome you to visit the Trunk or Treat event after the 10:30am mass today. We hope we have many families participating and helping to make the event fun for our kids.

This week’s update will include a short recap of some of our first quarter activities. Most predominant is the Special Olympics Bowling event in which our students in grades 5-8 volunteered. I have been informed that St. Anne’s is the ONLY junior high school that volunteers for the Special Olympics within our Region.

Next up is our Grandparents Day. Feedback from the event indicates that the grandparents of our students were impressed with the day, with many still talking about it with their children (the parents of our students) several days after the event.

Our school community replaced some past years “Project Discovery” activities with a S.T.R.E.A.M. event. S.T.R.E.A.M. stands for Science, Technology, Religion, Engineering, Arts, and Math. Mrs. Farrell, our Kindergarten teacher, organized our first S.T.R.E.A.M. Day, held on October 18. This was also the day when St. Anne welcomed over 20 additional students as part of our “Bring a Friend to School” day. All the teachers pitched in to run five different learning stations centered around the S.T.R.E.A.M. principles. S.T.R.E.A.M. Days will be held every month to expose students to different and unique learning opportunities.

Finally, as the first quarter has drawn to a close, we celebrated our students’ academic success with our awards ceremony this past Friday. Included in that were our Students of the Month from September: Grades K-2, Lilli Highley Grades 3-5, Liam Nicklaus Grades 6-8, Samantha Smith. I will be treating these students to lunch this upcoming week. Some Upcoming Dates/Events 10/27 - Annual Trunk or Treat. Immediately following the 10:30am mass 10/28 - Students and Staff will be participating in additional ALICE (Active Threat) training. 11/7 - St. Anne’s Ladies Craft Night, 6-8pm 11/8 - Grades 5-8 Lock-In/Rec Night 11/22 - Daddy and Me, 5:30-7pm 11/27 - Annual St. Anne 5K Turkey Trot Race packet pick-up. Main foyer. 11/28 - St. Anne Annual 5K Turkey Trot Run & Happy Thanksgiving Please remember that St. Anne “Pray Like A Champion Today” lawn signs are still for sale for $12 for 1, two or more sell for $10 ea. Also, we are still accepting tax deductible donations for our Adopt-a-Student Fund. Please contact me to buy your sign or donate for a student in need.

Best wishes, Mr. Michael J. Armato Principal
