Dear Friends in Christ, What a year! As someone recently pointed out on Face-book, they would never give 2020 a five-star Yelp review. We see so much death, suffering, anxiety, illness, loss of jobs, violence and isolation. Our loved ones find them-selves unable to get together for school, family gather-ings, and church groups that were a mainstay of their faith and happiness. As the election approaches, we also witness horribly unedifying actions and words from those who serve us in public office, and divisive, inaccurate proclamations from priests claiming that we cannot vote for a XXX (e.g., a Republican or a Democrat) because this would be a sin. This then forces the Vatican or the local Diocese to come out with a statement that Father Smith is wrong, he shouldn’t have made such a claim, and that he needs to apologize for misleading the faithful and take a good nap to get over himself. The anger is palpable, and people who like to stir up trouble fan the flames. Today’s First Reading appears in the midst of all this bickering. Wrath and anger are hateful things, yet the sinner hugs them tight. The vengeful will suffer the LORD’s vengeance, for he remembers their sins in detail. For-give your neighbor’s injustice; then when you pray, your own sins will be forgiven. Could anyone nourish anger against another and expect healing from the LORD? Could anyone refuse mercy to another like himself, can he seek pardon for his own sins? If one who is but flesh cherishes wrath, who will forgive his sins? Remember your last days, set enmity aside; re-member death and decay, and cease from sin! Think of the commandments, hate not your neighbor; remember the Most High’s covenant, and overlook faults. (Sirach 27:30-28:7) This does not mean we as Catholic Christian sit back and say “anything goes.” On the contrary, we speak up for reform, we act for social justice, we advocate for life issues, and we do so not because it’s fashionable but ra-ther because such involvement is and always has been a required part of the Gospel message. Even as we plan our own end of life decisions using resources from the Catholic Church, we also plan our political activity, our support of charities, and our parish involvement using the rich treasures of a Church that was born from the side of Christ crucified and has been working for the common good for two millennia. There are individuals and groups with various opinions, so I suggest to you only genuine resources from official Catholic bodies to avoid the confusion of listening to any Tom, Dick, and Harry with a website: From the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops: “Forming Consciences for Faithful Citizenship” https://www.usccb.org/ From the California Catholic Conference: https://cacatholic.org/ https://cacatholic.org/elections https://cacatholic.org/article/why-church-does-not-endorse-candidates May God bless you, our beloved country, and our world during these troubled times.- Father Brown
