NEW YEAR’S DAY THOUGHT

The Solemnity of Mary Mother of God falls

exactly one week after Christmas, the end of the octave

or “eight day” observance of Christmas. It is fitting to

honor Mary as Mother of Jesus, following the birth of

Christ. When Catholics celebrate the Solemnity of

Mary Mother of God we are not only honoring Mary,

who was chosen among all women throughout history

to bear God Incarnate, but we are also honoring our

Lord, who is fully God and fully human. Calling Mary

“Mother of God” is the highest honor we can give

Mary. Just as Christmas honors Jesus as the “Prince of

Peace,” the Solemnity of Mary Mother of God honors

Mary as the Queen of Peace”. Thus this solemnity,

falling on New Year’s Day, is also designated the

World Day of Peace.

Given to us by her Son, Jesus, from the cross,

she is always ready and willing to answer our prayers.

As we begin this New Year let us then turn to her as our

Mother and our greatest intercessor.

O God,

who through the fruitful virginity of Blessed Mary

bestowed on the human race the grace of eternal

salvation, grant, we pray, that we may experience the

intercession of her, through whom we were found

worthy to receive the author of life, our Lord Jesus

Christ, your Son. Who lives and reigns with you in the

unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.

Amen.

SOLEMNITY OF MARY, THE HOLY MOTHER OF GOD JANUARY 1, 2017

CELEBRATING THE SAINTS

Saint Philip Neri, Priest (1515-1595)

A native of the City of Florence, Italy, Philip

learned his catechism from the Dominicans. As a

teenager on journey with his uncle, a cloth merchant,

he frequently stole away to pray. He was praying near

Saint Benedict’s Monte Casino Monastery, when he

heard a call to go to Rome.

Philip was eighteen when he arrived in the city.

He spent his days tutoring students and his nights

studying Thomas Aquinas. He frequented the

catacombs, where he was close to the tombs of the

early martyrs, but also the criminals and the “lowlife”

who haunted the underground passageways. On the

Vigil of Pentecost, 1544, he was praying in the

catacombs when the Holy Spirit entered his body as a

ball of fire. He was thrown to the ground by the

intensity of love; years later, an autopsy of Philip’s

body confirmed the literal enlargement of his heart that

occurred on that day. After Philip was ordained in

1551, he preached everywhere, engaging the rich and

the poor alike. He soothed numberless hearts in the

confessional. Above all, he drew in the young people

who had become ensnared by the loathsome Roman

entertainments. In their place he offered beautiful

music, prayer and companionship – all become part

of his “oratories.” Later, Philip would organize a group

of priests to continue his mission who have become

known as “Oratorians”.

Philip taught with simplicity: “Scruples and

melancholy stay away from my house.” “Be good, if

you can.” “Nothing helps a man more than prayer.”

Saint Philip died in Rome on May 26

th,

which is his

feast day, in 1595 at the age of 79.

APOSTLESHIP OF PRAYER

If you received a bulletin on December 18, 2016 with

the 2017 Apostleship of Prayer pamphlet attached to it,

you probably notice some changes in the leaflets.

Starting with January, 2017, the Holy Father will have

one monthly intention which will serve as the Universal

Intention. This goes back to the procedure that was

followed from the beginning of monthly intentions

going back to the 1880’s. With the spread of mass

media, the speed of communications and the critical

nature of our times, Pope Francis will begin to issue

“urgent” intentions for Apostleship of Prayer Members

to pray for as their second or “Evangelization”

intention. As these urgent intentions are requested by

the Holy Father, they will be posted on the Apostleship

of Prayer website: www.apostleshipofprayer.org.

Hey Catholic! Did You Know

Did you know that the Marian title

“Mother of God” was defined at the

Council of Ephesus in 431AD. A

group of people had denied that Jesus is God. This

title was given to the Blessed Virgin Mary to defend

the divinity and humanity of Jesus.

As we make our resolutions for the coming year, why

not add weekly donations to our Food Ministry? Giving
