SUNDAY THOUGHT
Mark 1:29-39
Our Gospel selection this weekend addresses a
reoccurring longing in the human heart. There are times
when we all feel the need to escape from this world. In
today’s Gospel Jesus apparently shared that same need
and longing. Jesus’ public ministry was a demanding
one. He taught in the local synagogue of the towns He
visited. His teaching attracted huge crowds. Some in the
crowd were physically sick; some were emotionally
disturbed; no doubt some were simply curious. Yet, all
wanted His attention. Days like that, and we all have
had them, would wear anyone out. We are told though
that Jesus then rose early the next day and sought a
quiet place to be “at home” with His Father. All of us, if
we wish to live deeply spiritual lives and have
something to give to others must spend time in
communion with the Father. We escape the world so
that we can help the world.

FIFTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME FEBRUARY 4, 2018
CELEBRATING THE SAINTS Saint Robert Bellarmine, Bishop and Doctor of the
Church (1542-1621)
A native of Montepulciano, Italy, the well-connected and well-educated Robert entered the Jesuits in 1560 and in 1570 was ordained. He taught St. Thomas’ Summa Theologiae in Louvain, Belgium, before his frail health forced a move to the Roman College in the City of Rome. There he countered the errors of Protestant theologians in lectures that become the Controversies, the outstanding text of the Counter-Reformation. After some years as spiritual director in Rome, during which time he directed saintly prodigy Aloysius Gonzaga, Robert served successively as papal theologian, Jesuit provincial, and then cardinal and Bishop of Capua. He narrowly avoided being elected pope by waging a campaign to prevent it. In his old age, Robert composed many spiritual works. His preaching and teaching were “entirely directed to concentrating the soul’s energies on the Lord Jesus intensely known, loved, and imitated” (Pope Benedict XVI). Robert, who had a deep devotion to Saint Francis of Assisi, died on the feast of the stigmata of Saint Francis. “The school of charity,” he taught. “On the last day, when the general examination takes place, there will be no question at all on the texts of Aristotle, the aphorisms of Hippocrates, or the paragraphs of Justinian. Charity will be the whole syllabus.” Saint Robert Bellarmine was canonized by
Pope Pius XI in 1930; the following year he was
declared a Doctor of the Church. His remains, in a
cardinal’s robe, are displayed behind glass under a
side altar in the Church of Saint Ignatius, the chapel of
the Roman College, next to the body of his student,
Saint Aloysius Gonzaga, as he himself had wished.
His feast day is September 17th.
HEY CATHOLIC! DID YOU
KNOW Did you know that the consecrated Host and the Precious Blood are elevated at Mass so that the
faithful can have a moment of adoration? Truly, a fitting time to speak in one’s heart the words of St. Thomas: My Lord and My God.

The Women's Faith Ministry wishes to thank everyone who donated to the warm clothing collection to be provided for the homeless at St. Malachi. It was
amazing to see the Church Meeting Room stacked with bags and boxes overflowing with sweaters, pants, shirts, socks, shoes, gloves, hats, scarves, and personal items. This is especially needed at this time of year, and we are grateful for the generosity of our parishioners. A special thanks to Sister Roberta who was kind enough to deliver all the items. May God Bless you all!

MORNING OFFERING INTENTION
FOR FEBRUARY
SAY “NO” TO CORRUPTION: That those who
have material, political or spiritual power may resist
the lure of corruption.
The abuse of power for personal benefit,
corruption, is a problem across all human history.
Bribery is often involved. One hears sadly of corrupt
narcotics officers working with the mob, or of favors
granted at various places of employment for a
kickback, or at high levels of government for a
public works contract. The Holy Father has taken a
firm stand against such immoral and illegal activity,
asking us to pray that those tempted to corruption
may be delivered from illicit enticements.
This is also a very Ignatian intention: the
founder of the Jesuits knew that riches, power, and
pride were all closely interrelated. The enemy of our
human nature leads us to think our gifts and abilities
are our own or that having some power might bring
us material, social or spiritual wealth. Sadly, in this
progression many of us fall prey to the sin of pride,
thinking ourselves better than others, or even placing
our will above the Lord’s in fashions small and
large.
The struggle against corruption is a priority
for Pope Francis. On a visit to the Italian city of
Cesena last October he characterized corruption as
the “termite of politics” and contrary to the common
good. In that pastoral visitation listeners applauded
his challenge to reject “even the most minimal form
of corruption.
Later that same year the Holy Father called
corruption a “smog” that “pollutes” society. Pope
Francis invites Catholics to be “crafty,” having a
“healthy lack of trust” for those promising easy
riches. Such craftiness, he enjoined calls for careful
self-examination in the face of temptation, and a
healthy prayer life.
WEEKLY WORK OF MERCY Pray for the safety of our police officers, especially those who serve Parma.

CATHOLIC MEN’S FELLOWSHIP OF
NORTHEAST OHIO
The Catholic Men’s Fellowship of Northeast Ohio will be holding its 18th Annual Men’s Conference Saturday, February 24, 2018 at the Holiday Inn on Rockside Rd. in Independence.
Featured Speakers: Peter Herbeck, VP and Director of Missions for
Renewal Ministries, Eric Mahl, former football player — Kent State,
Cleveland Browns, New York Jets, Greg Wasinski, nationally known Catholic speaker
and writer. Brochures are available in the lobby or go to www.cmfneo.com for more information. Register online or call (877) 208-5585. Registration deadline is February 9.
MYSTAGOGICAL MOMENTS
Mystagogy (mist-a-go-gee) is prayerful reflection on the presence of God in the midst of events. Begin your conversation with God with this question: Question: The Gospel says that the whole town
gathered at the door to see Jesus. When did you
come just to see Jesus? What was happening in life?
What did Jesus do for you?
PRE-CANA TEAM
Pre-Cana is a team of married couples that enjoy sharing their life experiences with each other as friends and with
engaged couples intending to receive the Sacrament of Marriage. St. Anthony of Padua Parish hosts a Pre-Cana Day once a year. This year Pre-Cana Day will be held on February 25. The 2018 Catholic Charities Annual Appeal will take place next weekend in our parish. Please refer to the insert in this week’s bulletin which includes
our parish’s goal and an overview of the importance of Catholic Charities in our communities. This year’s appeal theme is Your Mercy: Transforming Lives and Communities. Your generous support will transform the lives of others, to offer dignity, possibilities and companionship to those who are most vulnerable. As in the past, an in-pew commitment process will take place next weekend, February 10-11. All who have not received the mailing from Bishop Perez, or have not had a chance to respond to it, will be asked to consider making a generous pledge to support the ministries and services provided by Catholic Charities. If you have received the mailing, please respond generously to it and we ask you to also compete the in-pew envelope and indicate by checking the box that you have responded by mail.
CATHOLIC GLOSSARY
State of Grace: A person in the state of grace is a person who is free from mortal sin. If one is not in a state of grace, they should abstain from Holy Communion until they have gone to Confession.
