SUNDAY THOUGHT Matthew 28:16-20
The Feast of the Ascension of the Lord
marks a new stage in our relationship with God. When Jesus
returned to be with His Father in heaven, Jesus didn’t really
leave us. He just gave us new ways to encounter Him. Life is
always to be a searching for that which can give us lasting
happiness. Only complete satisfaction will come from our
possession of God. Yet our avenues to encounter Him are as
unique as we are unique. We come to God through silence,
and creation. We meet Him in the scriptures and our
participation in the Community of the Church. He is found in
both the joys and sufferings of each day. These are just to
name some of the ways we can and do meet God. The road is
not the same for all people. Artists and musicians may come
to know God by a path that is different than the auto
mechanic and factory worker. Women may find God
differently than men. Single people will know God
differently than married men and women. In a sense the path
is not the important thing. What is important is our desire for
God. Without this desire we will go nowhere. Time may
move on but we may not. We may just do the same things
over and over again. The monotony of life may lull us into
giving up the search. Jesus’ promise of always being with us
must be seen for what it is. It is both an invitation and a
command to continue on the road seeking after Him.

THE ASCENSION OF THE LORD MAY 28, 2017
CELEBRATING THE SAINTS
Saints Cyril and Methodius, Priest (+869) and
Bishop (+885) Cyril and Methodius were born in Thessalonica, Greece. Cyril became a priest and teacher in Constantinople; they called him “the Philosopher.” Methodius served as a governor in Macedonia. When Methodius retired his post for the monastic life, Cyril followed him to Mount Olympus. In 863, the brothers heard the plea of Prince Ratisav: “We do not have a teacher who can explain the true Faith to us in our own language.” They went on a mission to Moravia which is the modern day Czech Republic, and Cyril developed the Glagolitic alphabet, enabling them to render the Bible and the liturgical books in the language of the Slavs. Their desire to say Mass in the vernacular, however, riled the German missionaries already present. The brothers went to Rome to plead their case, and the Pope, Adrian II, heartily approved of their efforts. While in Rome, Cyril formally entered religious life. He died soon after. Methodius spent the next twenty years
solidifying their work. As the bishop of a new see,
Pannonia and Moravia, he continued to suffer the
disapproval of the German bishops. For two years he was
imprisoned by them, but eventually Pope John VIII
reaffirmed him. He died at Velehrad in 885. The
language Cyril and Methodius developed is still the
liturgical language for many Russians, Serbs, Bulgars,
and Ukrainians. They are among the co—patrons of
Europe.

AN EVENING OF PRAYER
AND FELLOWSHIP What better way to embrace our
relationship with God and with each
other than through prayer. The
Women’s Faith Ministry invites all
women to gather for an evening of prayer and fellowship on
Wednesday, June 21 from 7-8:30 p.m. at The Sisters of the
Incarnate Word, 6618 Pearl Road, Parma Heights. Prayer
can be carried out either at the labyrinth or in the Queen of
the Holy Rosary Shrine, both located next to each other and
adjacent to the parking lot.
WHAT TO EXPECT. You will be given a brief
explanation of the history, the intent, the stages of prayer,
and how to pray the labyrinth. You will then have time to
either pray while walking the labyrinth or to pray in the
Shrine. For those interested, following this unique prayer
experience, we will stop for ice cream and spend time in
fellowship.
CARPOOL. You can either meet at the shrine at 7
p.m. or for those interested, we will meet at 6:30 at St.
Anthony and carpool to SIW. If you would like to carpool,
please call the church office at (440) 842-2666.

MARRIAGE AND FAMILY “Families and homes go together. This makes us see how important it is to insist on the rights of the family and not only those of individuals. The family is a good which society cannot do without, and it ought to be protected.” — Pope Francis, The Joy of
Love, 44.

St. Anthony’s has always been blessed with parishioners working one or several shifts during the carnival. Preparations for this year’s carnival are already underway. Please consider volunteering your time as a booth captain or taking a shift for one or two days during the carnival. If you enjoy playing Black Jack, Let it Ride and Texas Hold’em, we are
always in need of casino dealers. We will have a dealer training night on Tuesday June 6, at 6:30 p.m. in the school cafeteria. APOSTLESHIP OF PRAYER INTENTION
FOR JUNE
National Leaders: That national leaders may firmly commit themselves to ending the arms trade which victimizes so many innocent people. In his Farewell Address, President Eisenhower, said “we must guard against the acquisition of unwarranted influence by the military-
industrial complex.” Military arms, while apart of legitimate defense, are also big business. “We annually spend on military security alone more than the net income of all United States corporations.” This reality has an “economic, political, even spiritual” influence on everyone. Selling arms or giving them as aid has grown since 1961. The world’s arms trade went from $35 to $70 billion in 2011. It’s now approaching 100 billion and of this, the U.S. has 33% of the share while Russia has 25%. The U.S. provides arms to 96 countries. There also exist a huge black market that fuels terrorism, wars and other violence. Addressing the U.S. Congress, Pope Francis said we need “to end the many armed conflicts throughout our world. Here we have to ask ourselves: why are deadly weapons being sold to those who plan to inflict untold suffering on individuals and society? Sadly, the answer, as we all know, is simply for money: money that is drenched in blood, often innocent blood. In the face of this shameful and culpable silence, it is our duty to confront the problem and to stop the arms trade.”
He asked Italian children “why is it that so many powerful people don’t want peace? Because they live on war! The powerful, some of the powerful, profit from the production of arms and they sell arms to this country which is against that one, and then they sell them to the one that goes against this one. It is the industry of death! And they profit.
Greed fuels the arms trade: “You know, greed
does us so much harm. When we see that the
economic system revolves around money and not
around the person, but around money … so much is
sacrificed and war is made to protect the money. And
because of this, many people don’t want peace. There
is more profit with war! Money is earned, but lives
are lost, culture is lost, education is lost, so many
things are lost.
HEY CATHOLIC! DID YOU
KNOW…
Did you know that the outer garment
worn by the deacon is called a dalmatic.
You can always recognize a dalmatic
because it has sleeves; chasubles do not
have sleeves. The dalmatic has been
used by the Roman Church since the 4th century.
!CATHOLIC GLOSSARY
Missal: The missal is the prayer book for the Mass. The
more formal name for this book is the Roman Missal, or
in Latin, the Missale Romanum.
!!
WEEKLY MASS REMINDER
Singing is an important element of the Mass.
When we sing, we raise our minds, our
voices, and hearts to God. When we sing, we
join the choirs of angels in praising God.
When we sing, we pray twice. Do not be afraid to sing!
God loves to hear you.
PRE-SYNOD SURVEY ON YOUTH
The Catholic bishops of the world are planning to meet in
October 2018 for the 15th Ordinary General Assembly of
the Synod of Bishops. The theme of this gathering is
“Youth, Faith and Vocational Discernment.” In
preparation for this major synod on youth, Pope Francis
wants to gather input from the Catholic faithful.
Consequently, the Diocese of Cleveland has made
available a survey questionnaire to gather information on
the current state of the young in our diocese that will be
included as part of the pre-synod discernment document.
The survey can be found on the diocesan website home
page, www.dioceseofcleveland.org. All are invited and
encouraged to participate by taking this short survey. The
bishops of the United States pray that the results of this
survey will help them more fully understand the
experience of young people in our Church and in our
country -- their hopes, dreams, fears and struggles -- so
that the synod may bear fruit in offering more insight and
direction to our ministry with young people.
