As we all know, our Orthodox Church does not have a “slow” period without much happening. There are only two months of the year – July and October – that do not have a major feast of the Lord or the Theotokos; however, both months still have feast days of major saints of our Church. In addition, Orthros and Liturgy are still celebrated every Sunday of the summer months. Even though families begin to wind down in mid-June when the academic year typically ends, our spiritual focus should remain in tune with the Church’s calendar. A particular period of heightened spiritual focus each summer is the Dekapentávgousto – the fifteen days starting August 1 st , dedicated to the Dormition of the Holy Mother of God. Being that the Word of God made flesh came to us through the human vessel of the Theotokos, it behooves us to uphold this spiritual season with sincere devotion. The first 14 days consist of a strict fast mimicking Great Lent and Holy Week. Enveloped within this fast period is also the celebration of the great feast of the Transfiguration of our Lord on August 6 th . This is a bright and glorious feast that brings us great spiritual joy. On most evenings of this period we chant the two versions of the Paraklesis, or Supplication services – the Small and the Great. In the midst of summer’s heat and vacation time, we are again asked by the Church to sharpen our spiritual focus during these 15 days, and to make a sacrifice pleasing to God through our fasting and church attendance. Whether on vacation domestically or internationally, there’s always a good chance of having an Orthodox church of one of the various jurisdictions close by. FROM FR. ANTHONY Beloved in Christ,

As we enter the season of summer, we leave behind us the beautiful and spiritually uplifting period of Great Lent, Holy Pascha, and the great feasts of the Ascension of our Lord and Holy Pentecost. Amazingly, this lengthy liturgical season covers a period of 18 weeks, just over one-third of the calendar year! This particular liturgical period renews us annually for yet another year in our spiritual lives. However, since its end usually occurs just before summer, there exists the danger of losing the spiritual momentum we have just gained. Since summer is a time for relaxation, vacationing, perhaps even a lighter work schedule, we must resist the temptation of taking a spiritual vacation as well.

A particular period of heightened spiritual focus each summer is the Dekapentávgousto – the fifteen days starting August 1st, dedicated to the Dormition of the Holy Mother of God. Being that the Word of God made flesh came to us through the human vessel of the Theotokos, it behooves us to uphold this spiritual season with sincere devotion. Presiding Priest: Fr. Anthony Evangelatos St. Athanasius the Great is a parish under the spiritual and ecclesial oversight of His Eminence Metropolitan Methodios of the Metropolis of Boston, Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America, under the jurisdiction of The Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople.

The St. Athanasius the Great Greek Orthodox Church in Arlington, Massachusetts strives to be the living witness of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Our mission as a parish is to “practice hospitality” (Romans 12:13), as St. Paul so exhorts. Thus it is our rich blessing to strive and bring the Light of Christ to all of God’s people, through Orthodox Christian tradition, education and philanthropy. We seek to serve the spiritual needs of our faithful parishioners through the sacramental life of the Church. By means of outreach and faith in God, we continue our growth as a living Church by inviting others into the Orthodox faith through Baptism and/or Chrismation, and educating them through the establishment of our Christian ministries, programs, schools and philanthropic activities.

From Fr. Anthony continued

Clearly, we all need to periodically withdraw from our daily routines and get away to enjoy time with our families, especially during the summer. The Church knows and accepts this reality, which also applies to the clergy. At the same, the Church also seeks to keep her children spiritually focused throughout the year. Through proper prioritization of our lives, we can try our best to keep ourselves spiritually focused, even when away on vacation. Our daily prayers should not be neglected, and our Wednesday and Friday fasting can still be incorporated, as well as the observance of the fast period mentioned above, as best as possible.

Unfortunately, throughout our Archdiocese there exists the sad reality that many families stop attending church as soon as the Sunday School year is completed. This approach to church life is perplexing since the liturgical year of the Orthodox Church runs from September 1st through August 31st, and not parallel to the secular academic year. We must stop and consider the message given to our children by abruptly stopping church attendance from late May through mid-September. It can give the impression that Sunday School is of higher importance than participation in the Divine Liturgy on Sundays, which should be the other way around.

Beloved in Christ, please accept what I have written as a loving and fatherly admonition for the spiritual benefit of all. I realize that there are many exemplary parishioners who attend church year-round except when away or ill. I’m also aware that many of our families try to be frequent with church attendance to the best of their ability. Our prayer is that we all be together as one family in Christ throughout the year except for necessary exceptions. We need each other’s prayers whether in church or praying at home, and of course, no less so during the summer months.

May you all have a restful and spiritually rewarding summer season! In Christ’s love, +Fr. Anthony Spiritual Wisdom

The following is taken from excerpts of sermons of St. John Chrysostom, and from The Salvation of Sinners by Monk Agapios, translated and printed by St. Nektarios Monastery, Roscoe, NY, 2014. (continued from last month) Behold, dear reader, how every sorrow (whether it originates from the devil, people, or some other source) is in fact a therapeutic remedy sent to you by your Heavenly Father, in order to purify your soul. Do not become upset if the drink tastes bitter, because this bitterness will help you acquire your cherished health, just as bitter and unpalatable medications prescribed by physicians help us get better. All the sorrows and difficulties we are faced with in this life are spiritual medications sent to us by the Heavenly Physician for the benefit of our soul.

According to St. Gregory the Theologian, the gall that Tobit placed on his eyes, through which he regained his sight (cf. Tob. 11:8-14), signified this truth – that every sinful person is delivered from spiritual blindness through bitter sorrows. Indeed, eyes that have been blinded by sin are enlightened and recover their vision through suffering.

3

Page 4: St. Athanasius the Great Greek Orthodox Church Bulletin/2019 Bulletins/St Athanasius 2019...to attend the holy Liturgy on Sundays continues throughout the summer. Whether on vacation

From Fr. Anthony continued When Joseph’s brothers threw him into the well (desiring his demise), they did not comprehend what a great sin they had committed. However, when God later allowed them to be overcome by hardship, they confessed and admitted that they were rightly suffering everything on account of their sin against their brother: “And they said to one another, ‘We are verily guilty concerning our brother, in that we saw the anguish of his soul when he besought us, and we would not hear; therefore is this distress come upon us” (Gen. 42:21). Do you see how much benefit issues from adversity? Do you see how hardship gives light to the blind and wisdom to the unlearned? The Apostle Peter did not want to allow Christ to wash his feet because he was unaware of his Teacher’s sensible and judicious intent. As Christ Himself attested: “What I do, thou knowest not now; but thou shalt know thereafter” (Jn. 13:7). But when Jesus warned Peter that he would not have any part with Him if He does not wash his feet, the disciple stood motionless in fear and allowed Christ to wash his feet. Similarly, at present you are uncertain of the Lord’s objectives as He washes you with the cleansing waters of suffering and hardship; however, one day, when you witness the radiance and glory that your soul has been adorned with, after being immersed in the bath of sorrows, you will thank your all-wise Lord. For if He had not given you a bath, you would have no part with Him in His Heavenly Kingdom. Up until the prodigal son possessed his paternal inheritance and wealth, he splurged in luxury, he entertained himself with food and drink, he carried out all his sinful desires, and never even once thought of repenting (cf. Lk. 15:11-20). However, when the wise physician cauterized him with the flame of hunger, famine, and poverty, he abandoned the pleasures of the flesh and quickly returned to his paternal home, much wiser and more mature. What the mill stone does to wheat, what the grinding wheel does to steel, and what the furnace does to silver, this is precisely what life’s various trials and sorrows do to man: they purge him of all unsightly imperfections and polish him to a brilliant shine. Since difficulties and sorrows are so advantageous and are the cause of such benefit for us, why should we foolishly detest them? Why shouldn’t we instead thank and glorify the unerring heavenly Physician Who sends them to us in order that we may acquire the health of our soul, just as we thank and gladly pay the physicians who heal our body? Blessed is the person who realizes that life’s difficulties are sent to us by the Lord for our salvation, and who gratefully embraces them with pleasure. Holy Dormition Fast Begins 8/1 As mentioned earlier, the first fourteen days of August comprise a fast period in honor of the Holy Theotokos, as spiritual preparation for the feast of her Holy Dormition on the 15th. This fast is a mini-version of Great Lent, so the guidelines are identical. Following we offer the Church’s guidelines for those who wish to follow the fast to the full extent, or as a starting point for those unable who need to follow to a lesser extent.

Page 5: St. Athanasius the Great Greek Orthodox Church Bulletin/2019 Bulletins/St Athanasius 2019...to attend the holy Liturgy on Sundays continues throughout the summer. Whether on vacation

From Fr. Anthony continued

Strict fast from all animal products throughout, including fish* (shellfish is permitted daily throughout the fast) Fast from wine (all alcoholic beverages) and olive oil on weekdays* (it’s permissible to substitute vegetable/seed oil) Wine and olive oil permitted on Saturdays and Sundays

*Fish, wine, and olive oil are permitted on the feast of the Transfiguration, 8/6. Let us honor the Holy Mother of God through our fasting, remembering her constant intercessions on our behalf. May we also attend the beautiful and melodic Paraklesis services for our spiritual benefit. Most Holy Theotokos save us! From the Lives of the Saints

St. Markella of Chios – 7/22 This holy lamb of Christ was born in a village on the island of Chios. Her mother having died, she was brought up by her father. As she grew older, she also grew in virtue, her body shining with the purity of her soul. The Devil, jealous of such radiant virtue, tried to overcome her with impure thoughts, but the Saint easily repulsed every temptation by the power of the Cross. The Prince of Darkness then turned his attention to her father, and provoked in this worldly man of little faith an impure desire for his own daughter. Having let such thoughts germinate in his soul, he began to suggest unworthy propositions to the young girl who, troubled by such impudence, fled from the village and took refuge on the mountain. This defeat, far from cooling his ardour, only increased her father’s maddened desire, so that like one possessed, he set about searching her out up hill and down dale. Seeing him approach, Saint Markella ran towards the sea and hid in a large bush; yet she was unable to escape her father’s notice and he, being unable to reach her in the bush, set fire to it. She dodged him by taking another route and began to run along the seashore on the rocks. As her father could not catch up with her, he fired an arrow at her which wounded the blessed Saint, but did not stop her from continuing her desperate flight.

Realizing that her strength was beginning to fail, she sent up a prayer to her heavenly Spouse, begging Him to come to her aid. The Lord immediately made a rock break into two, which received the Saint, just as had happened in the case of Saint Thecla in former times (24 Sept.) When her father arrived and was not able to drag her from the rock, he cut off his daughter’s breasts and then beheaded her and threw her head into the sea, by his despicable acts thus opening to her the gates of the heavenly court, where the wise virgins accompany the Bridegroom.

5

Page 6: St. Athanasius the Great Greek Orthodox Church Bulletin/2019 Bulletins/St Athanasius 2019...to attend the holy Liturgy on Sundays continues throughout the summer. Whether on vacation

From Fr. Anthony continued From the rock that sheltered the Saint there flowed a clear stream with healing virtues which had the property of covering the pebbles with a reddish film called the ‘holy blood’ by the local people, who hastened to make pilgrimage to the place. They collected the pebbles and scraped them, putting the scrapings into jars and using them for the treatment of all kinds of sicknesses. The Saint appeared many times, dressed in monastic clothing and seeming to rise up from the sea, to the sick who had come to spend the night in the church that had been built over the place where the bush had stood. The Holy Apostle Matthias – 8/9 Saint Matthias, whose name means ‘gift of God’, was, it is believed, of a distinguished family from Bethlehem. He was among the disciples who followed the Lord from His Baptism to His saving Pasion. After the Ascension, the Apostles returned to Jerusalem and remained in the Upper Room, persevering with one heart in hymns and prayers while awaiting the coming of the Holy Spirit. There were about a hundred and twenty of them: the Mother of God, the eleven Apostles, the Lord’s brothers (cousins), His disciples from the very first days, and the women who had faithfully followed Him right to the tomb. At that time, Peter got up in the midst of the assembly and declared that, since Judas had been excluded from their communion and had received the punishment for his betrayal, it was right that another disciple be given his place, and become with them a privileged witness of His Resurrection. Joseph Barsabbas, named Justus, and Matthias, were presented. As they were judged equally worthy, the Apostles raised this prayer to God: Thou, Lord, who knowest the hearts of men, show which of these two Thou hast chosen that he may take part of this ministry and apostleship from which Judas by his transgression fell (Acts 1:24-25). They drew lots, and Matthias was elected by Providence to complete the number of the Twelve Apostles, the symbol of perfection.

After Pentecost, he went to preach repentance and the conquest of the passions by the observing of the evangelical commandments, first in Palestine and then, it seems, as far as Ethiopia, where he suffered martyrdom.

Religious Education

The Author of All Life is God.

When times seem difficult, remember Christ’s greatest humiliation occurred before His exaltation in accomplishing His redeeming work.

Whose will but God’s must be carried out in life.

All prayers are indeed answered by either, ‘Yes’, ‘Not Now’, ‘Not Exactly’, or ‘No’

Each day is a gift. Maybe that’s why today is called, ‘the present’

Ultimately, which matters most: How well we did, or what good we did?

Fact: Wealth has nothing to do with money.

And, finally: Given all we have: Just what is it that God owes us?

GOYA News We have had a very fun and eventful June! First of all, we would like to thank everyone who volunteered and helped at the Greek Festival, making it a very successful weekend! We are having quite a busy week to the end of the year. On June 22nd, we had our annual pool party hosted by the Stefanidis family! Everyone had a great time swimming and soaking up the sun! It was so much fun hanging out with each other! We also went on our annual trip to Six Flags in Agawam, Massachusetts on June 24! It’s a trip we all look forward to every year, and we all had a great time. To conclude this fun-filled year, we have a beach trip which is in Hampton Beach, NH, on June 27. It’s always a lot of fun and a great way to end the year!

As the year comes to an end, we would like to thank all of our amazing officers and advisors. This fun and successful year wouldn’t have been possible without them! We truly bonded as a GOYA through many memorable events, such as the ski trip, the black light dances, the Philoxenia house visit, and so much more. As we say goodbye to our seniors and welcome new members, we look forward to starting again in September. One final note, the GOYA election for the 2019-2020 officer positions will be held in September on the first day of Sunday School. You must be present to run and vote for a position. Thanks you, Mia Stanitsas

“Thank you to our Goya President, Thanos Arvanitis, the officers, and the whole GOYA for an amazing year. Your handwork and dedication is very much appreciated, and you are a wonderful example to our younger generation. To our graduated seniors good luck next year in college!! Have a great summer.” Sincerely, Your Advisors”

To promote charitable, benevolent and philanthropic outreach to preserve the sanctity of life and

family and to perpetuate and promote our Orthodox faith and traditions

And just like that after hundreds, and hundreds, and hundreds of hours of work the festival came and went.

Our community came together with love, commitment, and a sense of pride in our spiritual home and

family as we welcomed thousands of thousands of guests to our parish. We fed them, entertained them

and thanked them profusely for their kindness and support once again. Our spirit and soul full. Blessings

abound!

Our first order of business after the festival was to swear in our new Philoptochos Board for 2019-2021.

Congratulations to all. We are deeply grateful to all these talented ladies who tirelessly volunteer their time

and talents.

The Metropolis of Boston Philoptochos held the

Biennial Conference for 2017 – 2019 on June 8

at The St. George Cathedral in Springfield, MA.

We joined our fellow sisters in Christ as we

exchanged knowledged, approved a budget for

the Metropolis and elected a new Metropolis

Philoptochos Board for 2019-2021.

The major ministries of the Metropolis remain as

Follows: The Philoxenia House, The Fellowship

of Orthodox Stewards, Operation Housewarming

for Homeless Veterans, Social Services Fund and

The Saint Methodios Faith and Heritage Center.

HIGH SCHOOL AND COLLEGE

GRADUATES

One of our greatest joys every year is to watch

our youth as they enter new phases of their lives.

Some as they graduate from high school and

enter their college years and some as they

graduate from college and enter the work force.

This year we had the pleasure of celebrating the

achievements of Seven of our youth. Four from

High School: Athanasius Arvanitis, Nicole

Colovos, Antonios Mamounas, and Triana

Skourides; Three from College: Leah Cardarelli,

Katherine Colovos, and Alanna Mullen

THE PHILOPTOCHOS PRAYER

O Lord Jesus Christ, we bow our heads before

You, and with humble hearts we give thanks to

You for the abundant blessings, which You have

poured forth upon us. We praise You for

gathering us together as members of the Ladies

Philoptochos Society in the service to Your Holy

Church. ….

“We are not asked merely to call ourselves

Christian; we are asked to be Christian through

our Deeds.”

St. Ignatius of Antioch

CONGRATULATIONS TO YOU ALL!

Make us instruments of Your peace and of Your

hope, O Lord. Where there is pain and suffering,

may we bring Your healing and comfort. Where

there is loneliness and isolation, may we bring the

fellowship of Your Holy Church. Where there is

despair and discouragement, may we inspire hope

and faith in You. Where there is hatred and strife,

may we be peacemakers producing the fruits of

love and reconciliation.

Just Like that two years and the Philoptochos

Board of 2017-2019 has finished their term and

celebrated with their traditional End-of-Term

Dinner. This year it was held at Fiorella’s in

Concord Center on June 19. After thanking

everyone for taking time out of their busy

schedules to attend she shared her thoughts:

I entered my term as President unexpectedly in

2017. Our church was in a state of panic and

turmoil. One that I’ve never experienced

before. We shed tears together, supported each

other but most importantly, bonded in unity

together to support our mission of Saint Barbara’s

Philoptochos.

I joined Philoptochos 39 years ago. 39 years.

Philoptochos to me is a sisterhood of friendship,

love and service to our faith. I have created some

of my best friendships through Philoptochos. It

has been my heart and soul. It has shaped my life

and has made me who I am today. We have

been and continue to be the right hand of the

church. We are strong, we are bold and we are

decisive. Philoptochos is philanthropy and

service and sisterhood. We are literally an army

of Greek Orthodox women coming together to

do God’s work and it has been my honor to lead

this wonderful chapter of women.

It has been an honor and a privilege to serve with

so many of you. I’ve never been so proud of a

group! We pulled together and stepped up and

accomplished so much during a very difficult

time. This meant so much to me and I’m so

grateful to all of you for your consistent, tireless

hard work and efforts.

I’ll leave you with some words of wisdom I heard

last week at my grandson’s 5th grade

graduation. An 11-year-old girl named Kylie

stood up and spoke in front of hundreds of

people. This little girl left me with a statement

that is true to my heart, as tonight is so bittersweet

for me.

Little Halos concluded the

school year on Friday,

June 14, 2019. Children

performed their songs,

and finger plays both and

in Greek and English. The

program ended with the

graduates reciting their

poem, “Αντίο σχολείο

“Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for men” (Colossians 3:23)

Words cannot express our thanks for the love and support received for our Greek Festival 2019!

We had a great weekend filled with hard work, cooperation, love, laughter, and great weather! Long-time festival veterans were joined by a young generation of chefs, grill masters, gyro kings & queens and loukoumades specialists. Together, we worked nonstop, cooking enough food for a village while supply runners and table & tray cleaners navigated the tent like an obstacle course. Our experts were joined by new faces from our parish to learn the secrets to slicing gyro, rolling the perfect dolmathes and making a great moussaka; our pastry ladies once again served up homemade delicacies; a new generation of cotton candy spinners helped in our exciting children's area; our Kafenio introduced an instant classic, Loukoumada Sundaes; and a great group of bands, DJs and dancers gave our volunteers energy and kept our guests dancing all weekend long! A good time and thousands of smiles and laughs shared by all! This incredibly important community event would not have been possible without the hard work, dedication, love and support of our St Athanasius parishioners, families, and friends.

Your love for our Parish of St. Athanasius is awesome! Thank You - Ευχαριστούμε!

Our annual festival is always the event of the year and it continues to accomplish 3 important objectives:

1. To bring parishioners together, build friendships, and work as a team for our Parish 2. To connect with our neighbors and local community 3. To raise money in support of our parish and its many important ministries

Once again, we hit a homerun with each objective! Bravo! - Εύγε!

1. Over 200 volunteers from ages 5 to 94 worked the festival with enthusiasm and great big smiles, ensuring everything ran smoothly across the entire campus!

2. With thousands of visitors from all over New England, all of Arlington was buzzing about our delicious food, lively entertainment, and our army of orange.

3. This weekend's great turnout helped us to once again exceed our expectations in raising funds for the ministries of our Parish! Preliminary gross totals have us topping $255,000! WOW!
