Green Your Spring Cleaning

"Green Tips " are simple steps you can take today to green your clothing, your home, your transportation and more! We encourage you to choose one step to get started and return for additional tips over time. Buy green cleaners at your local natural foods store or via mail order or the Internet.

Make your own cleaners. To avoid toxic chemicals, consider making your own cleaners. Household items like baking soda, lemon juice, vinegar, and club soda, can be combined to clean everything from carpets to toilet bowls.

Use old clothing and sheets for dusting and cleaning rags, rather than paper towels.

Install a clothesline in your backyard or basement, and let your clothes dry naturally.

Avoid cleaners that contain phosphates as a water softener. Phosphates appear in a number of cleaners such as some dishwashing liquids and promote rapid algae growth which pollutes the water supply.

If you use mothballs, consider replacing them with a more natural alternative. Try cheesecloth-wrapped cinnamon sticks, bay leaves, or whole cloves.

Eliminate the need for chemical fabric softeners by adding ¼ cup of vinegar to your washing machine’s rinse cycle.

Let your houseplants do the cleaning! Some houseplants—such as Boston ferns, English ivy, rubber plants, and peace lilies—can help clean your indoor air by absorbing toxic chemicals.

It used to be that the “calling card” we left behind in any social situation

was exactly that: a piece of paper. Most of the time, this generic card was

stuffed in some pocket, never to be looked at again. Today, we’ve moved

past the business card and put our calling cards online. But just because real estate professionals have gone

digital doesn’t mean they’re making the right impression.

First, let’s think about how you connect with the people you meet. Do you tell them to visit your website? Search

for your name online? Connect with you on Facebook? If you’ve tried any of these methods, you know the odds

of follow-through are slim. And even if they do end up on your site or profile, will they be inspired by what they

see, or excited to learn more?

Your website is your best opportunity to quickly make a lasting impression online, provided that you follow a few

simple steps.

1. Build a Better Real Estate Website

Cost and technical expertise are no longer reasonable excuses for a poor web presence. It’s never been easier

or more affordable to plan, design, and create a real estate website. Service providers like Placester,

Squarespace, and Wix have made it possible to launch a beautiful website in less than an hour, even with lim-

ited web experience. Simply select a template and design theme, then integrate your IDX listings, images, copy,

and social media accounts. Once your basic framework is set up, you can easily customize your site according

to your target demographic, geographic focus, property type specialty, and more.

2. Own It

How many times have you visited an awful website and come away with negative thoughts about the person or

business? Like the clothes you wear and the “clean” car you tour clients in, your website is an extension of your

overall brand presentation. It’s a window for showcasing your marketing skills and making a connection with

your target audience. By creating an engaging website that promotes your skill set and unique characteristics

as a real estate professional, you can establish credibility with potential buyers and sellers before you ever

speak to them.

Page 11: St Augustine & St Johns County Board of Realtors BOR Forward March 2015 Newsletter

Page 11 V O L U M E 8 , I S S U E 3

3. Don’t Just Show Your Listings; Tie Them Up With a Bow

Of course, many real estate websites are about showcasing one of your greatest assets: listings. Yet many

agents don’t use listings to their full potential. Instead of simply making listings available to browse on your

website, try building content around them. Pre-launch a property with its own landing page. Showcase sold

listings in your monthly e-mail newsletter. Use your blog to highlight the best listings your community has to

offer. Give your visitors more than just a search page, and you’ll make a lasting impression.

4. Give Away Your Secrets

We all rely on the web to help us make our buying decisions. In fact, today 70 to 90 percent of the buyer’s

journey is complete prior to contacting a vendor. Nevertheless, you can still influence consumers early on by

offering them a way to answer their own questions online — and your real estate website is the perfect

venue. As a local agent, you’re an expert in the processes and challenges of buying and selling a home and

the ins and outs of the communities you serve. Your website is the ideal platform for sharing the “special

sauce” that makes you worth working with.

5. Focus on Local Search

More than ever, your ranking in Google search results depends on location-specific keywords and signals. To

optimize your website for local search, start by setting up profiles with your physical address (also called

citations) on all the major local search websites and directories: Google+ Local, Bing, Yahoo Local, Yelp, and

the major real estate portals. Connect these profiles to the customer reviews your past clients have left you,

then link everything to your personal real estate website so prospects and clients can find you.

6. Invest in Mobile

If you have a smartphone, you know first hand that the mobile web is increasingly the norm. What you might

not know is that local searches performed on mobile devices generate 47 percent more same-day store

visits than their desktop counterparts. According to one comScore report, 79 percent of mobile phone

owners use their devices to conduct local searches, while 78 percent of all local searches turn into offline

purchases. This is great news for locally focused real estate professionals. To take advantage these

numbers, you need to build a website that mobile users can not only find but also use. You can start by mak-

ing sure your website is responsive and works on all devices, from smartphones and “phablets” to tablets

and laptop computers.

Not long ago, creating a real estate website was a complicated, expensive, and frustrating experience.

Today, the best vendors are making things simpler by breaking down the technical barriers, enabling any

real estate professional to quickly build a great website. The flip side, of course, is that there’s no longer any

excuse for not having an effective website. So don’t wait: Start building and marketing your online brand

REach® launches companies into trillion dollar industries; provides access to thousands of potential customers

CHICAGO (March 17, 2015) – The National Association of Realtors®’ strategic investment arm, Second Century Ventures, has selected Pro.com as the first company accepted into the 2015 class of REach®, its growth technology accelerator program. Pro.com is a new home services marketplace that enables real estate agents to help home owners successfully price out home projects by matching them with a certified “Pro” in their area to get the job done.

The REach® program provides a catalyst for innovative technology companies, such as Pro.com, to launch into trillion-dollar industries including real estate, insurance, mortgage and financial services. It differs from other accelerator programs in that participants are more established than the aver-age start-up. Led by founder and CEO Matt Williams and his team of former Amazon executives, Pro.com has already helped over 100,000 customers with home projects, spanning 25 percent of U.S. zip codes across the country, representing a total value of $250 million in home services.

Williams is an experienced entrepreneur, most recently spending time as Entrepreneur in Residence at Andreessen Horowitz. Prior to that, Williams led the complete overhaul of social news aggregator Digg as its CEO. He sold his first startup, Livebid, to Amazon and later spent over a decade at the company leading various e-commerce divisions. Pro.com has raised a total of $17.5 million from investors including Maveron, Madrona Venture Group, Redpoint Ventures and Andreessen Horowitz.

“Real Estate agents and homeowners alike use Pro.com to price home projects and quickly find the best pro to get the job done,” said Williams. “It’s an honor to be accepted into this year’s REach® accelerator program – the knowledge, resources and support will be invaluable to us as we grow.”

This year marks the third class of the REach® program, which annually offers six to 10 organizations the opportunity to connect with NAR’s 1 million members, including some of the most highly regarded executives, digital entrepreneurs and practitioners in the industry.

“Pro.com is ideally poised to take full advantage of the REach® program, as they and all participants will benefit significantly from access to real es-tate leaders - from education to mentorship to market exposure,” said NAR President Chris Polychron, executive broker with 1st Choice Realty in Hot Springs, Ark. “While Pro.com is applicable to so many individuals, it hits on a sweet spot in the real estate space, as in this day and age, Realtors® are going well beyond the transaction and often times act as an advisor to homebuyers and sellers, who turn to Realtors® when making improvements to their homes.”

REach® has a very successful track record – past participants have on average doubled their customer bases during the program and have gone on to raise more than $34 million in financing. Participants have been funded by well-known venture funds including SoftBank Capital, Intel Capital, Jave-lin and 500 Startups. Graduates of the program include Updater, BombBomb, SmartZip, WeVideo and SendHub (also a Y-Combinator graduate).

The accelerator will continue to accept applications on its web site through March 19, 2015. REach® seeks primarily SaaS-based companies with applicability in real estate, financial services, banking, home services and/or insurance markets. Learn more at www.narreach.com.
