St. Barth Properties HistorySt. Barth Properties was founded by American Peg Walsh, an inveterate traveler who delighted in planning vacations for family and friends. She frequently vacationed in the Caribbean, visiting many of the islands over the years. In 1986 she arrived in St. Barth, and LW�ZDV�ORYH�DW�ÀUVW�VLJKW��2QH�FRXOG�VD\�VKH�QHYHU�UHDOO\�OHIW�

She bought a little bit of her newfound paradise – a small pied-à-terre in St. Jean – listed it with a local rental company but ultimately was disappointed in the lack of results. She decided simply to market the property herself. Voilà! In 1989, Peg coined and trademarked the company motto, Live Your Dream®��DQG�6W��%DUWK�3URSHUWLHV��6%3��ZDV�RIÀFLDOO\�ERUQ��representing a small group of carefully selected private villas.

In 1992, Peg’s son, Tom Smyth, now SBP’s vice president, joined the business. He shared Peg’s passion for St. Barth and had a keen interest in the then-new concept of e-commerce. The business grew exponentially from that point.

Meet the Team

Peg Walsh Founder & President 3HJ�:DOVK�� IRXQGHU� DQG�SUHVLGHQW�RI �6W��%DUWK�3URSHUWLHV��PDGH�KHU�ÀUVW� YLVLW�to the island in 1986, and that ignited a passion that later led her to found the company in 1989 around the mantra of Live Your Dream®. Today the FRPSDQ\��ZKLFK�UHSUHVHQWV�PDQ\�RI �WKH�LVODQG·V�ÀQHVW�SULYDWH�YLOODV�DQG�KRWHOV��continues to grow, as does its clientele.

3HJ�LV�SDVVLRQDWH�DQG�ÀHUFHO\�SURWHFWLYH�RI �6W��%DUWK�DQG�LWV�UHVRXUFHV�DQG�UHSXWDWLRQ��She chronicled her hopes for the island in the 2012 edition of VIP St. Barth. She has been honored by Condé Nast Traveler as one of the top villa specialists worldwide and the best for St. Barth each year since the award’s inception in 2006.

Currently, Peg spends six months a year on St. Barth with her husband, Steve. Late spring through fall, she is based out of her home on Cape Cod and makes frequent trips back to the island and to the company’s Franklin, MA, headquarters.

Her days on the island, which begin with a power walk, are spent doing villa and hotel site inspections and helping to make VXUH�WKH�LVODQG�RIÀFH�UXQV�VPRRWKO\��6KH�KDSSLO\�DGPLWV�WR�VWLPXODWLQJ�WKH�LVODQG·V�HFRQRP\�E\�VKRSSLQJ�WKH�ERXWLTXHV�and loves dining out in the island’s restaurants. Tom Smyth Vice PresidentTom began vacationing in St. Barth when he was just a teenager. After graduating from college in 1992, he joined the family business. Tom now has two teenage boys of his own, so the family tradition of St. Barth vacations continues. Together they enjoy snorkeling and scuba diving and riding Jet Skis. The boys are becoming fans of French food but can also tell you where to get the best pizza on the island. Tom and his wife, Amy, both enjoy the St. Barth lunch scene and dinner at the romantic seaside restaurants.

Kathy Schlitzer St. Barth Villa and Hotel Specialist (since 2000)Kathy not only makes biannual inspection trips to St. Barth but also frequently vacations there. Touching down onto that notorious little runway gives her a feeling of coming home. She needs to know who’s who on the island – and she does. Her island visits provide her with the opportunity to meet face-to-face with all the vendors whom she works with, and because she is a real people person, she loves those interactions! She also loves visiting the island’s beaches, snorkeling on day excursions, trying out new restaurants and keeping abreast of the island’s entertainment. It’s all in a day’s work.

Kim DiMascio Business Development (since 2012)Kim has brought her business acumen, her expertise in digital media and technology – and

her passion for the island – to St. Barth Properties. She is working with SBP’s villa and hotel

specialists on a variety of initiatives and implementing new systems as the company looks to

Anne-Cécile Bedford St. Barth Villa and Hotel Specialist (since 1999)Born in France’s region of Brittany, Anne-Cécile revels in that “French Connection”

when she visits St. Barth. She loves shopping the boutiques’ sales for the latest European

and island fashions – especially for her two children – and discovering local artists in the

galleries. You can usually count on her to come home with a unique piece of jewelry. Come

HDUO\�HYHQLQJ��\RX�PD\�ÀQG�KHU�REVHUYLQJ�WKH�LVODQG�WUDGLWLRQ�RI �VXQVHW�FRFNWDLOV�DW�6KHOO�Beach with a Ti-Punch. Anne-Cécile runs in the annual 10K race, the Gustavialoppet (Race of

Gustavia), and plans her November inspection trip around the event. It’s a highlight for her

and now one of her personal traditions.

Julie Nally 6W��%DUWK�9LOOD�DQG�+RWHO�6SHFLDOLVW��VLQFH������With over 30 visits to St. Barth to her credit, Julie knows its beaches! Her personal favorite

is the more secluded Gouverneur, and she’s an expert on which boulangeries and restaurants

offer the best to-go options for beach picnics. She enjoys the island’s maritime traditions

and will join the spectators for the November Cata Cup Regatta when she is on the island.

Julie plans her post-season inspection trip around her May birthday, and she celebrates

with a late-night dinner at one of the island’s fabulous restaurants. And then she indulges

in some St. Barth-style nightlife. You’ll have to ask her yourself whether she has danced on

any tabletops.

Toni Laronga Executive Assistant (since 2006)Toni’s role is that of Executive Assistant to President Peg Walsh and Vice President Tom

Smyth. She is the hands-on person for daily operations, liaises between the U.S. and island

RIÀFHV�DQG�LV�WKH�FRPSDQ\�JR�WR�SHUVRQ�IRU�D�OHQJWK\�OLVW�RI �IXQFWLRQV�LQFOXGLQJ�,7��6KH·V�a self-proclaimed computer geek, and everyone is glad of it. On her business-focused trips

ShoppingSt. Barth is a duty-free port, and it caters to its

sophisticated visitors who revel in its some 200 shops

and boutiques. Those lucky enough to be on the island

during les soldes will reap bargains galore! Forbes has named it one of the “World’s 10 Best Shopping

Destinations.” We know! Serious shoppers on a mission,

and window shoppers alike, might choose to begin in

Gustavia. The bustling little capital has three major

shopping streets including the harborside Quai de la

République, nicknamed rue du Couturier. It rivals New

York’s Madison Avenue and Paris’s Avenue Montaigne

for elegant displays in exciting designer shops including

Louis Vuitton, Tod’s, Bvlgari, Cartier, Chopard and

Hermés. It’s the perfect spot to pick up a Pain De

Sucre bikini, a Rolex watch or a Chanel bag. St. Jean’s

Pelican Shops and La Villa Créole, known for their chic

boutiques, should not be missed. Chic European couture

can be found in boutiques like Gustavia’s Mascara, and

a stop at one of the Pati de St. Barth shops (in Gustavia

or St. Jean) for a T-shirt, tank top or hoodie with the

What to Buy?Designer duds and haute couture, but of course. French

and Italian fashion lines not available in the U.S. and the

trendiest beachwear are all readily available. Watches,

jewelry (the St. Barth map bracelets and pendants are

charming), French perfumes, vintage wines and Cuban

cigars for smoking in situ are all available. Looking

for local products? The women of Corossol and

Colombier intricately weave the native latanier palm

straw into delightful baskets, handbags and broad-

brimmed hats. Locally produced beauty lotions and oils

made from island plants make unique and interesting

gifts. A few shops offer a selection of made-in-St. Barth

clothing and accessories. St. Barth is home to many

talented artists – their works can be discovered in the

numerous galleries. A bottle of rhum vanille is great to

bring home. As in France, many shops close for a long

(2-3 hours) midday déjeuner but stay open as late as 8

pm. Many are closed on Sundays and Wednesday

afternoons as well.

Eat, Drink and Be MerryDining – St. Barth is truly a paradise for gourmets

and foodies alike. Its over 80 restaurants range from

gastronomique dining rooms, many housed in high-end

hotels, to sidewalk cafés and feet-in-the-sand beachside

grilles. Some venues can be quite expensive, but there

are lots of affordable options with great ambience and

amazing views. Reservations, always recommended, are

a must in High Season; we are pleased to provide that

be the best in the Caribbean, rivaling that of any city in

pastries offered at the French bakeries. Picking up freshly

into a bar scene later with live music and dancing. And

there are some nightclubs that “are just getting started”

just off Gustavia Harbor, and around Coco Islet and a

small cape, l’Ane Rouge, off Colombier Bay. There are a

number of diving schools that offer full-day expeditions

HikingHiking can be a great way to explore the island. The most popular itinerary is the goat path from Petite Anse (about 20 minutes) to stunning Colombier Beach that otherwise can only be accessed by the sea. You may also want to visit the “washing machine” on the island’s southeast side (take the path off the road in Grand Fond). We can arrange half-day and full-day escorted hiking trips with a St. Barth citizen who is also an environmentalist. The tours are fun and informative and include fascinating GHWDLOV�DERXW�WKH� LVODQG·V�KLVWRU\�DV�ZHOO�DV� LWV�ÁRUD�DQG�fauna.

TennisCourt times can be arranged (around €15-20 per hour) at the Flamboyant courts in Grand Cul de Sac and by the stadium in St. Jean. Tennis lessons with a pro are also available and can be arranged through our concierge. Our cocktail party tradition will continue this year at

the chic harbor-view restaurant Bonito. One reviewer

described Bonito’s ambience as “Cape Cod meets St.

Tropez.” It has a sophisticated, beachy look and feel with

Where to go? I by Idalmi, St. Barth’s only make-up and nail bar. This cool and compact haven is tucked away amidst the bustle up on Rue du Roi Oscar II and features two plush sit-back-and-relax pedicure chairs, manicure bars and a professional make-up station. Proprietor Idalmi Perez, a professional make-up artist and stylist, does not just reign over her make-up and nail bar; she is hands-on with clients. Her services are sought out for many of the island’s photo shoots, and bridal parties are one of her specialties.

Ida, as she is known to her friends, is the face of her business – literally. The former model, who arrived on St. Barth from her native Puerto Rico by way of Miami, is featured in the ads that promote her shop and her signature line of products: Idalmi St. Barth Cosmetics. The products, which include a tinted moisturizer with SPF, a bronzer and blushes, lip colors that feel as great as they look and lushly hued eye shadows, are rich in nutrients derived from vegan formulas and are hypoallergenic. A point of pride is they adhere to PETA’s international policy of no animal testing.

Idalmi’s line of nail lacquers is gorgeous, inspired by St. Barth and its tropical lifestyle. They are, in fact, named for the island’s beaches. Shell Beach is a soft white with a hint of shell-pink, and Flamands is a sexy, vibrant coral. The line includes “last longer than your vacation” shellacs, DQG�ÀYH�QHZ�FRORUV�DUH� LQWURGXFHG�HDFK�VHDVRQ�� WKH\�DUH�sold in perfect travel-size bottles. L’Esprit

Tucked away in a tropical garden just “down the road” from gorgeous Saline Beach, the restaurant offers a décor that is beach-club rustic chic. It seats 90 on the “see and be seen” palm tree-studded teak deck, which is delightfully shaded with canopied pergolas, and at more private tables situated on the periphery. So it is as lovely a venue for a wedding or festive event as it is for a romantic dinner pour deux under the stars.

L’Esprit is also ideal for a long leisurely pre- or post-beach lunch. We’ll vouch for the rosé being chilled to perfection. And there is L’Esprit to Go. During the week, with the exception of Wednesdays, the resto offers a selection of sandwiches and salads, water, soft drinks, wine and beer. A handsome 6 feet 6 inches in height, Chef Jean-Claude Dufour has an even bigger reputation in the island’s culinary circles. And since the island we are talking about is St. Barth, the gastronomique capital of the Caribbean, well, that’s big indeed.

Natives of the Bordeaux region of France, Jean-Claude’s family owned a catering business, so he developed a passion for cooking at a young age. He followed his passion, studying gastronomy and working under some of France’s renowned chefs as he came into his own. And then he came to St. Barth.

Over the years, his skill and reputation grew, and his dream was to have his own restaurant. In 2011, circumstances were such that that’s exactly what happened. The now-famous chef acquired the keys to one of the island’s most popular restaurants, L’Esprit, out in Saline. We call it the Beachside Bash, and the idea came to us in 2009. That year, the iconic bar and burger shack Le Select was celebrating its 60th anniversary in early November, and its biggest fan, Jimmy Buffett, announced that he would give a free concert. Requests poured in from friends and clients who wanted to come down and join in. It was so much fun that we decided to have a pre-season party every year. And we have.

This year’s Bash again included great food, wine and cocktails; the company of old and new friends and clients; and live entertainment that got everyone up dancing. The island’s favorite songstress, Christine Gordon, and the popular guitar-strumming vocalist Soley were in top form.

The French take their food and wine very seriously, and if – like the family of Jean-Baptiste Barre – they warrant the U.S. appellation of “foodies,” well, that’s the frosting on the gâteau. So it was no surprise when Jean-Baptiste pursued the study of gastronomy and wine. The Barres hail from Bordeaux – enough said. He plied his trade of sommelier in Paris before making the decision in 2002 to explore an opportunity on St. Barth at the gone-but-not-forgotten François Plantation, considered by many to have been the island’s top gastronomique restaurant. Next stop? Le Toiny, whose Oh la la Le Gaïac now vies for that honor.

Jean-Baptiste’s passion for wine and his entrepreneurial spirit led him to partner in opening a wine shop in Grand Fond, and in conjunction with that, as he is a classically trained chef, he operated a small epicurean catering business.

Flash forward to October 2011. He did an extreme makeover on a corner spot in St. Jean’s Villa Creole, which is a bustling warren of chic shops, and opened ABSOLUTELY WINE – Le Bistroy. The space, with a bit of a courtyard feel, artfully blends a wine bar, a wine shop, a gourmet deli and a wine school with classes for novices through serious oenophiles.

It’s a perfect spot for a post-shopping lunch. Think about a chilled glass of rosé and a yummy salad. Le Bistroy RIIHUV�RYHU����ZLQHV�E\�WKH�JODVV��DQG�D�WHUULÀF�FDVXDO�GLQQHU�option would be to pair a few glasses with the tapas-style small plates they offer. The charcuterie, the house-madepaté and the selection of cheeses are exceptional.

The ambience? Rustic sophistication – St. Barth style. A cool (in every sense) private dining room is available for parties of up to 12 people.

The cellar is well stocked with organic vintages, biodynamic wines coming directly from the growers, and all of France’s regions are represented. Jean-Baptiste’s native Bordeaux, Burgundy, Provence, the Rhone and the Loire – and of course Champagne.

The Secrets of Champagne is one of several fun and informative classes offered at Le Bistroy’s wine school. Jean-Baptiste and accomplished sommelier Marion Verges conduct the sessions in French; sommelier Audrey Ferrari teaches English-speaking patrons, and her passion for wine is contagious! Offered at 4 pm daily (and by appointment), most classes run about 90 minutes in length; they are priced from €59 per person. The cost of sampling and savoring Grand Crus is higher; there are options to combine the tastings with lunch, and a playful course in blind tastings includes a special dinner. Generally about 3 hours in length, they are priced from €118 per person. A private tasting in the comfort of your villa can be customized to incorporate special wines and a dining experience. I recently opted for a snorkeling excursion. When I arrived at Gustavia’s Ferry Quai in time for the 11 am outing, the Blue Cat catamaran was docked and ready, and everyone was excited. A sleek 48 feet long and 20 feet wide, it is the largest dive boat on St. Barth. Specially designed for scuba diving and snorkeling expeditions, it offers all the comforts of home (toilets, hot and cold showers, fridge) – and then some: a trampoline deck is available for sunning, and a covered upper-level deck provides shade and a bird’s-eye ocean view.

Our destination was Pain du Sucre (Sugar Bread), an islet off the harbor, and it didn’t take our little group of divers and snorkelers long to jump into the warm, crystal clear ZDWHUV��7KH�VDQG\�ERWWRP�UHÁHFWV�WKH�VXQOLJKW��WKH�FRUDO�DQG� WKH� ÀVK� GDUWLQJ� DERXW� DUH� FRORUIXO�� DQG� WKH� WXUWOHV��rays, eels and tarpon are all friendly. If it’s summer, keep your eye out for dolphins. Other popular diving sitesinclude l’Ane Rouge of Colombier Bay and the island’s four shipwrecks.

Post-snorkeling, I enjoyed chatting with owner Thierry Balaska. A native of Strasbourg, France, he made his living as a salesman for an elite line of hair products. He shared that with a grin while passing a hand over his shiny, bald pate. One day in 2008, he decided to change not just his career but his whole lifestyle. His quest was for a scuba operation. That decision led him to St. Barth to buy and operate Plongée Caraïbes. Happily, his wife was “on board,” and the Balaska family is blissfully ensconced on the island. And Thierry, who now spends his working days barefoot, is living his dream.

History of St. BarthSt. Barth’s history is long, tumultuous – and fascinating. St. Barth was originallyinhabited by Arawak Indians; they were followed by the Caribs, who greeted Christopher Columbus when he arrived in 1493. He named the island for his brother Bartoloméo. The French made initial unsuccessful attempts to settle it until some determined Huguenots from Normandy persevered and prospered. Later, French buccaneers made it a way station as they plundered Spanish galleons, which adds to St. Barth’s lore.

In 1784, France traded the island to Sweden, and the capital was named Gustavia – in honor of its king, Gustavia III – and declared a free port. (To the delight ofshoppers, it remains free.) In 1878, it was sold back to France, but charming reminders preserve the past in street signs and the Swedish Cemetery. Those touches delightfully enhance St. Barth’s European ambience.

Tourism took hold when Rémy de Haenen, an eccentric Dutch aviator, landed his SODQH�DW�ZKDW�LV�QRZ�WKH�DLUSRUW��+H�ODWHU�EHFDPH�WKH�ÀUVW�KRWHOLHU�DQG�WKH�LVODQG·V�mayor. This tiny island, just eight square miles, with its many hills intersected by serpentine roads is a testament to its origins – a volcanic disturbance some 50 million years ago.

If you are on St. Barth over this time, we encourage you to join in. Wear something festive and plan to arrive early. Park either in the industrial area of Public or near the lighthouse, as the streets of Gustavia will be closed for the parade until 7 or 8 pm. You can choose a place along the route or join the parade as it goes by. The celebration will surely be a highlight of your visit to St. Barth!

Carnival in St. Barth is smaller – not unlike the island – but is celebrated in the typical French Caribbean manner with lots of music, dancing and revelry. And with a bit of St. Barth’s legendary style.

Gustavia is the primary venue for the festivities, and theparades begin with the Carnival’s School Children’s parade on Friday February 8, 2013, followed by Shrove Tuesday’sMardi Gras and continue on to Ash Wednesday – Mercredi des Cendres.
