ST. BASIL GREEK ORTHODOX CHURCH THE BASILIAN SEPTEMBER 2017 Heavenly Food Every September our Church community gears up to host one of the most beloved and popular events of San Joaquin County—our Greek Fesval! The Greek Fesval is a wonderful weekend of fun, delicious Greek dishes, dance and hospitality. Countless of people leave our grounds very sased and look forward to next year! As the multudes leave sased and well-fed from savory Greek cuisine, my hope and prayer is that they will also learn about our precious Orthodox Chrisan faith, which has the ability to leave them spiritually sased and well- fed. Christ Himself says, “I am the bread of life. He who comes to Me shall never hunger, and he who believes in Me shall never thirst” (John 6:35). The spiritual hunger and thirst the Lord is referring to is that which takes place within us—it’s that internal empness we feel, that yearning for meaning for our lives; it can also mean the experience of confusion, feeling lost, or being in despair. Ulmately, it is only Christ, the bread of life, who can ll our spiritual hunger with joy, peace, love, comfort and power. For us to be fed with the heavenly bread of Christ, we need to live a certain way. Christ Himself said, “My food is to do the will of Him who sent Me, and to nish His work” (John 4:34). When Christ did God the Father’s will, He was feeding Himself spiritually. It is the same with us—if we are to overcome our spiritual hunger and thirst, if we are to nd internal sasfacon, contentment and fulllment, we need to do God’s will; we can’t just think that being Orthodox in name only will be sucient. We need to imitate Christ and be people who are loving, merciful, forgiving, compassionate, paent, kind and humble. Living the Chrisan life also requires the wisdom and guidance of the Church which Christ established through his Apostles. When we say in the Creed that we are “the One, Holy Catholic and Apostolic Church”, we are saying that the faith we have preserved since the me of the Apostles is the faith which gives all people the necessary tools, disciplines, guidance, mindsets, and opportunies to overcome our spiritual hunger and thirst in life. However, it is not just doing God’s will that is sucient to sasfy and quench our spiritual hunger and thirst. Our Lord tells us the following: “Most assuredly, I say to you, unless you eat the esh of the Son of Man and drink His blood, you have no life in you. Whoever eats My esh and drinks My blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up at the last day. For My esh is food indeed, and My blood is drink indeed. He who eats My esh and drinks My blood abides in Me, and I in him.” (John 6:53-56). Our Lord is referring to Holy Communion and therefore is telling us we must receive this sacrament on a regular basis. The delicious Greek dishes that people will experience at our beauful Fesval is but a glimpse of the heavenly food which is Christ Himself and that St. Basil’s Orthodox Church oers every week. God desires that all people partake of this spiritual food and drink, so that all people will “taste and see that the Lord is good” (Psalm 34:8). With love in Christ. Fr. Pete

Heavenly FoodEvery September our Church community gears up to host one of the most beloved and popular events of San Joaquin County—our Greek Festi val! The Greek Festi val is a wonderful weekend of fun, delicious Greek dishes, dance and hospitality. Countless of people leave ourgrounds very sati sfi ed and look forward to next year!

As the multi tudes leave sati sfi ed and well-fed from savory Greek cuisine, my hope and prayer is that they will also learn about our precious Orthodox Christi an faith, which has the ability to leave them spiritually sati sfi ed and well-fed. Christ Himself says, “I am the bread of life. He who comes to Me shall never hunger, and he who believes in Me shall never thirst” (John 6:35).

The spiritual hunger and thirst the Lord is referring to is that which takes place within us—it’s that internal empti ness we feel, that yearning for meaning for our lives; it can also mean the experience of confusion, feeling lost, or being in despair. Ulti mately, it is only Christ, the bread of life, who can fi ll our spiritual hunger with joy, peace, love, comfort and power.

For us to be fed with the heavenly bread of Christ, we need to live a certain way. Christ Himself said, “My food is to do the will of Him who sent Me, and to fi nish His work” (John 4:34). When Christ did God the Father’s will, He was feeding Himself spiritually. It is the same with us—if we are to overcome our spiritual hunger and thirst, if we are to fi nd internal sati sfacti on, contentment and fulfi llment, we need to do God’s will; we can’t just think that being Orthodox in name only will be suffi cient. We need to imitate Christ and be people who are loving, merciful, forgiving, compassionate, pati ent, kind and humble.

Living the Christi an life also requires the wisdom and guidance of the Church which Christ established through his Apostles. When we say in the Creed that we are “the One, Holy Catholic and Apostolic Church”, we are saying that the faith we have preserved since the ti me of the Apostles is the faith which gives all people the necessary tools, disciplines, guidance, mindsets, and opportuniti es to overcome our spiritual hunger and thirst in life.

However, it is not just doing God’s will that is suffi cient to sati sfy and quench our spiritual hunger and thirst. Our Lord tells us the following: “Most assuredly, I say to you, unless you eat the fl esh of the Son of Man and drink His blood, you have no life in you. Whoever eats My fl esh and drinks My blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up at the last day. For My fl esh is food indeed, and My blood is drink indeed. He who eats My fl esh and drinks My blood abides in Me, and I in him.” (John 6:53-56). Our Lord is referring to Holy Communion and therefore is telling us we must receive this sacrament on a regular basis.

The delicious Greek dishes that people will experience at our beauti ful Festi val is but a glimpse of the heavenly food which is Christ Himself and that St. Basil’s Orthodox Church off ers every week. God desires that all people partake of this spiritual food and drink, so that all people will “taste and see that the Lord is good” (Psalm 34:8). With love in Christ.

Interested in being part of the Parish Council? Are you interested in being part of the Parish Council? According to Fr. Harakas, a well-known Orthodox theologian and Professor, “Parish councils help do the work of the church. And ‘the work of the church’ is to continue the work of Jesus Christ in the world. PRESIDENT’S corner

Xronia Polla! Happy (Ecclesiastical) New Year!

Though it seems odd to celebrate the beginning of a new year in late summer, according to ancient tradition, September 1st was day that Jesus began publicly preaching the good news of his ministry. Since the earliest days of the young Church, Christians everywhere have proclaimed through faith and good works the news of redemption and salvation that Jesus preached on the day of the Church’s New Year.

September also means that the festival is just around the corner. The Big Tent is up and people all around town are looking forward to our 58th annual weekend of food, entertainment, dancing and hospitality. This year we are continuing to increase our focus on welcoming and introducing the community to our Orthodox faith. With Father Pete’s lead and the help of numerous parish volunteers, we are offering more church tours and presentations, and more opportunities for visitors to see our beautiful sanctuary. We are all looking forward to another joyous and successful festival.

And fi nally, save the date: the fall 2017 General Assembly will be held on Sunday November 12, following liturgy; a light lunch will be served. These assemblies are important opportunities for all of us to participate in the governance of the parish and its many ministries. I hope all will attend.

ST. BASIL PRESCHOOL

WE DID IT!!!!!!!! St. Basil Preschool was once again granted Accreditation by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (N.A.E.Y.C.) This prestigious recognition has been achieved by less than 7% of early childhood programs nation-wide. N.A.E.Y.C. accreditation is a rigorous process by which programs demonstrate that they meet over 500 criteria within ten set standards of distinction. There are currently only two accredited programs in Stockton. “This has been a wonderful experience for our staff, parents, and the community within St. Basil,” said Tammy Hamilton-Williams, the Director of St. Basil Preschool. “With learning there is growth, and we are proud of this accomplishment.” St. Basil Preschool fi rst gained N.A.E.Y.C. Accreditation recognition in 2001. This is the fourth time St. Basil has gone through this process successfully. The self study took St. Basil eighteen months to complete. The accreditation is valid for fi ve years.

For more information on accredited programs you may visit www.naeyc.org

family and community news

Our own Justin Paraskevas Sotiras served in the altar with his beloved daddy, Fr. Pete, during Paraklesis services during the Dormition of the Holy Theotokos Lent.

Fr. Pete had the pleasure of showing our beautiful church and explaining Orthodoxy to this charming group from The Commons at Union Ranch - Manteca. They watched a movie at their residence about Greece and decided to visit Papapavlos (for Greek food) and our church. They had a wonderful time. The man on the left is Greek and recently moved from San Jose.
