THE WIND AND THE SEA Living along the shores of Lake Superior—the “big lake,”
as the locals call it—you can often hear the advice, “Respect
the lake; don’t take it for granted.” People who know Lake Su-
perior respect its power and watch out for its many moods.
Sunken ships and boats crushed into kindling are testimonies to
what the lake can do.
The readings of this Sunday evoke our memories of the
lake, of the mighty Mississippi River, or of the ocean itself.
Who but God can control these mighty waters and set limits to
their advance? The lake described in today’s Gospel was a
body of water subject to sudden storms and churned into dan-
gerous waves by terrible winds.
But these mighty agents are subject to God. The sailor and
the fisher all respect the water. Even more, they respect the
awesome power of the Maker of wind and sea.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION When you are thinking about traditions in the Church, 1563
is a “watershed” year. The Council of Trent began a reform of
the liturgy that put an end to old practices and set many of our
present practices in place. For the first time, engaged people
were absolutely required to appear before their parish priest,
and to exchange consent in his presence along with two wit-
nesses. To this day, Catholics are obliged to this form, namely:
to marry another Catholic in the presence of a priest (or deacon)
and two witnesses, unless dispensed from the law. The Council
really didn’t forbid customs and ceremonies that added life to
the celebration, but the mood of the times was dark and some-
what austere. Practices like the blessing of the marriage bed or
using a canopy for the nuptial blessing started to fade away, as
did the custom of bringing the presents for the couple to the
church and the addition of fiddlers and jugglers to the proces-
sion. The Council of Trent tried to preserve local customs, but
the long‑term effect was to standardize celebrations every-
where in the world. —Rev. James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co
ON FATHERHOOD

Whoever is in Christ is a new creation.
— 2 Corinthians 5:17
Images of Dad 4 Years Old - My Daddy can do anything.
7 Years Old - My Daddy knows a lot. A whole lot!
9 Years Old - My Dad doesn’t really know quite everything.
12 Years Old - Naturally, Dad doesn’t know that either.
14 Years Old - Dad? He’s hopelessly old-fashioned.
21 Years Old - The old man? He’s way out of date.
25 Years Old - Dad might know a little bit about it.
35 Years Old - Before we decide, let’s get Dad’s opinion.
60 Years Old - Wonder what Dad would have thought about it.
65 Years Old - Wish I could talk it over with Dad just one more time.
Take time on this special day to thank dad and love him for who he is.
Before you know it, you’ll be 65. Happy Father’s Day!

Summer Giving
During the summer months, we have noticed that the week-
ly collections are generally down. Summer vacations, fun
and traveling often take St. Basil members away from our
parish family for some much needed rest and relaxation.
However, please keep in mind that St. Basil is here 24/7,
365 days a year. We still need your support to keep things
going, even when you are elsewhere. And
please...remember to include your envelope number on any
checks that you may send in or drop into the collection bas-
ket. Also, you can call Sheri
Thomas and find out how easy it is
to sign up for on-line giving.
Thank you for your
continuous support and
have a wonderful
summer!
Peter’s Pence
Collection -
Collection for
the Holy Father
Next week our diocese
will take up the Peter’s
Pence Collection, which
provides Pope Francis with the funds he needs to carry out
his charitable works around the world. The proceeds benefit
the most disadvantaged: victims of war, oppression, and
disasters. Join our Holy Father as a witness to charity to
those who are suffering. For more information on the Pe-
ter’s Pence Collection, visit www.usccb.org/ppc.
Life and Dignity Sunday is Next Weekend
The bishops of California have established the Catholic Leg-
islative Network (CLN) to develop a strong, clear, moral
voice for life and justice in our state during a very difficult
time. Next weekend during Life & Dignity Sunday, all pa-
rishioners will have an opportunity to register for the Net-
work. You will find a one-page description of the newly
created advocacy network in this week’s bulletin. Please
read it, pray about it (and for it), and come prepared next
week to register for this important new effort.
St. Basil Conference “Teacher, do you not care that we are
perishing?” Of course Jesus cares when
we are in crisis! And so do the benefac-
tors and volunteers of our St. Basil SVdP
Society. While we can’t provide assis-
tance to everyone that calls, we help as
many as we can because the love of
Christ impels us. We bring them a little
calmness in their storm. Last month we
helped 90 families = 350 of our brothers and sisters with
emergency food. Food Locker Wish List: Jelly
Please pray with our Lazarus Ministry for the recently
deceased members of our parish community especially:
