4 — Second Sunday of Easter/Divine Mercy Sunday · April 12, 2015

From the Administrator, Fr. James Merold

My Dear Easter People, It is Easter night that I write this. I am sitting in my living room watching the Ten Commandments (with my favorite Moses - Charlton Heston) and eating hard-boiled eggs (an ancient traditional Easter food symbolizing the Resurrection). I was re-living this past Holy Week with all its precious moments.

I absolutely loved Palm Sunday with all the royal red display in the sanctuary along with the palm arrangements and the wooden cross draped in a red priestly vestment representing Jesus. “All Glory, Laud, and Honor” is one of my all-time favorite hymns. Then I had the privilege to portray Christ in the Passion account. Holy Thursday morning I observed the Last Supper with our school children. I washed the feet of children and teachers. They were so reverent as I knelt before them, poured water over their feet, and dried them just as Jesus must have done in the upper room. Holy Thursday evening a devout group of parishioners attentively and reverently celebrated the Mass of the Lord’s Last Supper with me. I invited the whole congregation to approach the altar and have their feet washed. Deacon Gregg and I performed this ritual for people too many to count. Every age group was represented from small children to those older than I. One woman came to me walking with her cane and slowly walking up the step into the sanctuary. After I washed each one’s feet, I thanked them for following Christ’s command. During the evening, people came to church to spend time in prayer at the Altar of Repose; this was a special time of quiet and meditation for those who came. Think about doing that next year on that holy night. On Good Friday, I celebrated the Liturgy of the Lord’s Death at 3:00 and 7:00 PM. Both services were well-attended. The Veneration of the Cross was a very moving experience for people. Even the smallest children came upward and touched or kissed the Wood of the Cross. The most important celebration of our liturgical year is the Great Vigil of Easter on Holy Saturday night. We began outside of the main entrance of the church to light the New Fire proclaiming the Resurrection of Jesus. Our Paschal candle was lit and led us into church as we proclaimed: “Christ Our Light! Thanks Be To God.” The entire Vigil was a solemn proclamation of the Resurrection. We listened in darkness as the great Scriptures of our Tradition were read by the solitary light of the Paschal candle; the music and drama of the night led us into the celebration of the First Mass of Easter. Easter morning saw five well-attended Masses. People’s faith was so evident as they renewed their Baptismal Promise and received their Easter Communions. All in all, my Holy Week experience at St. Bede was wonderful and fulfilling. I am grateful and appreciative to everyone who helped lead our people to a deeper relationship with the Lord throughout that week of weeks that changed the world. May the Lord reward you for your efforts and hard work. In Christ, our Risen Savior, Father Jim Merold P.S. Our attendance on Easter was 1500.

No Night at the Races in April

We were all looking forward to the “Night at the Races” social and fundraiser event scheduled for April 18. At the same event in another state, it was a great success. But in Illinois, we couldn’t get a license from the state for anything involving horse racing. It seems that it is mostly casino-type games or card games that can get licensed (Charitable Games Act -230 ILCS 30/). Our goal was primarily social (as we did with the tournaments in dodge ball and bean bags) in order to build relationships by having fun activities specifically for parents and other members of the greater St. Bede family. We will continue to search out other possibilities. Charles Pinto, Principal

Families and the Gospel - Easter Sunday (John 20:19-31)

In today’s gospel, Jesus teaches, “Blessed are those who have not seen and believe.” Accepting someone as they are, without demanding they prove themselves or meet our expectations, creates a rich relationship. Without acceptance a home is only a house and a family is just a group of house mates. — by Bud Ozar

St. Bede Women’s Club Tea & Fashion Show

The St. Bede Women’s Club eighth annual Generations Spring Tea and Fashion Show was a sold-out success. Dainty china cups and pastel napkins brightened Coleman Hall. While the guests nibbled on finger sandwiches and sipped tea, they were treated to models from four generations showing off the latest in Spring fashion. Local venders set up tables for shopping. Raffle prizes were awarded to lucky winners. Food items were collected for the St. Vincent de Paul Society.

The Women’s Club would like to thank not only the women, men, and RE students who worked to make the Tea a success but also the models and emcee for a lovely fashion show. On behalf of the St. Vincent de Paul Society, thank you to all who donated food items. We hope to see you at next year’s Tea!

Update on Deacon Larry For the past 4 months I had been experiencing back pain that continued to escalate to the point of little to no mobility. After many therapies and shots they finally resolved that it was the hip and it needed to be replaced. On March 2nd I had the surgery and with a couple of minor setbacks I am finally in recovery. I hope to be returning to full active duty the week of April 13th, doctor permitting. During my infirmity, I experienced a deeper sense of empathy and compassion for people suffering in any way and also for the those who are confined whose only sense of being outdoors is to look out a window. I have also experienced an unbelievable awareness of your love and friendship through your prayers, myriad of get well cards and gifts, phone calls, visits and several friends reaching out in helping me with needs inside and outside the house. I will be offering my prayers, novenas and Masses for all of you! See you soon, God bless! Deacon Larry
