Dear Parents, Guardians and Students;
We congratulate our community as we continue to make our way to the end of a
period of shifts and changes to accommodate our high enrolment in order to balance
classes. We are grateful to have such a supportive community of caring adults,
families, staff and students who welcome so many new students, families and staff to
our big and beautiful community of St. Bernard Catholic School! In this month where
we celebrate the Virtue of Gratitude, let us give thanks for our country and for our
school: to be able to learn and grow in a community rooted in Gospel values, where
we Belong to each other, we Believe in the Word and we Become one in the Spirit!
Great news for everyone! Our Terry Fox Run was very successful…we actually beat
our goal of $1500 and reached $1575! Thanks to all who participated as it was truly a
beautiful day to walk in honour of a Canadian Hero and to make a difference for
cancer research!! We also celebrate our young athletes: our Girls’ and Boys’ Softball
teams for doing so well and our Cross Country Team runners who are in full training
mode in preparation for the upcoming meets in October. Our Grade Fives have
returned from a wonderful trip to Queen’s Park, where they explored a day in the life
of the Ontario Legislature and had a chance to meet and take the traditional photo on
the foyer steps of the Legislative building! We also take this opportunity to welcome
our newly elected Catholic School Parent Council and Members at Large (voting
members). Congratulations to the following parents:
Ms. Lucy Goncalves: returns as our Chair, Ms. Claudia Sabino is our newly elected
Co-Chair, sharing the position of Treasurer: Carla MacNeil and Angela Shanahan,
sharing the position of Secretary: Brenda Kennedy and Deanna DelCol, and our
Ontario Association of Parents In Catholic Education (OAPCE) representative is
Luisa Polidoro, and Jenny Escobar is Member at Large. We welcome and
congratulate this team: our CSPC executive and voting members!! Parents, know that
you are always welcome to our Parent Council meetings, the next one taking place on
Tuesday, November 5th at 7 pm in the Library. Child minding is available, but please
contact us if you plan to attend with your child(ren).
If you wish to see more school highlights, up to date notifications and events sign up
to our St. Bernard Twitter feed @StBernardsTCDSB .
We look forward to our Open House, taking place on October 1st from 5:30 to 7:30 as
well as our biggest fundraiser of the year—our HALLOWE’EEN DANCE A
THON…there are already almost 150 prizes to be won, including electronics, bikes,
games, movie passes, and so much more!! Our Catholic School Parent Council and
staff are working hard to prepare for an exciting Hallowe’en Dance on Thursday,
October 31st and a draw for prizes the following week. Our top three winners will
receive our top prizes to be announced shortly. Last year, we had an Ipad and Raptors
tickets…so exciting! Please remember not to send any food treats to the school for
Hallowe’en as we have many students with life threatening allergies to several items
such as nuts, fish, sesame, and many others. Please read the section of our newsletter:
Anaphylaxis.
On behalf of the staff of St. Bernard, our Trustee Daniel DiGiorgio and our new
Superintendent Maria Meehan, we wish you a wonderful October filled with God’s
many blessings!
May God bless our St. Bernard Family!!

Open House/BBQ: St. Bernard will be conduction its Open House on Tuesday, October 1st. For the fourth year, the Parent Council with the help of Mr. Corn will be
offering a variety of freshly prepared foods. The Parent Council will be subsiding the event
and thus decreasing the cost of a combo. Orders Online were due last week to ensure
accuracy in the quantities ordered. There will NOT be any food sold on the day.
Spirit Wear Will be available for purchase again this year. There are lots of items to choose from: t-shirts, hoodie, caps and toques, track pants, shorts and golf shirts. Order forms were sent
home the first week of school and are due Friday October 4th.
Dress Down Days: On the last Friday of each month, students can participate in Dress Down Day for the minimal cost of $1. Due to an overlap with Picture Day last week, we did not have our first dress down day. As a result, this month we will be having two dress down days: Friday October 4th and 25th.
Cookie Sales will be available on Wed. Oct 30th from the CSPC office (cash sales). The following will be available: Chocolate Chip DeLite, White Chocolate Fudge DeLite and Vanilla Pumpkin Cookies. Remember to bring
your loonies and toonies.
Halloween Dance-a-thon: Please watch out for more details regarding our major fundraiser for the year. A dance-a-thon will take place Thursday October 31st. More details to follow. Council would like to request
from parents any prize donations they can contribute. Any donation, big or small, will be greatly appreciated.
Simply drop off your donation at the office, leaving your name and the name of your child(ren) with your
donation.
School Council Meeting : Our next school council meeting for the 2019/20 school year is scheduled to take place on Tuesday, November 5th @ 7 pm in the school library. If
there is anything you would like to discuss at the meetings, email us at

2019 - 2020 ∙ ROOTED IN CHRIST: WE BELONG, WE BELIEVE, WE BECOME
ANAPHYLAXIS IS THE MOST
SEVERE ALLERGIC REACTION
AND IS POTENTIALLY LIFE
THREATENING
At St. Bernard Catholic School
several students have serious
and/or life-threatening allergies
to certain foods. Foods that can trigger an
anaphylactic reaction by consumption and contact are:
traces of peanuts and other nuts, fish and shellfish,
sesame seeds, eggs, kiwis and seed and nut oils. ***DO
NOT send food products with these ingredients as
trace amounts and cross contamination can cause
serious physical and emotional reactions and even
death. We ask that everyone practice extra care in
checking all food items before they come to school.
This is an adult responsibility. Contamination from
allergens can easily spread to desktops, all about the
school (doorknobs, materials, equipment, etc.,) and the
buses. Speaking to your children about food allergies
will help to educate your children about cross
contamination. Please DO NOT bring in any type of
food items for birthdays or at any time. We want
these special days to be fun for all children so we
invite you to consider alternate choices for sharing.
We also do not want anyone to feel obligated to send
any items to your child’s classmates. For those that
wish to, some suggestions include: a book donation to
the class on behalf of the child celebrating their
birthday, craft supplies for the class to share, a
donation to a charity that the school supports in your
child’s name, a pencil, stickers, or crayons. In addition
to this, we would like for you to reinforce our message
of not sharing food items. Although we promote
sharing, for example, of books, toys, ideas, materials,
etc., the sharing of any food item is absolutely not
permitted. Frequent hand washing is also an important
step in preventing cross contamination.
While we cannot guarantee an allergen free
environment, together, we can do our best for the
safety of all children at St. Bernard. We count on the
care of staff, parents, and students, in establishing a
common understanding of the severity of anaphylaxis.
Full community co-operation will help us prevent
incidences of medical emergencies due to anaphylactic
reactions.
***************************************************
PLEASE HAVE ALL ITEMS
TAKEN CARE OF PRIOR TO
START OF SCHOOL:
We are a school of over 700
students and 60+ staff in the
building, and it is very important that
we all work efficiently in our homes
and our school. Unnecessary
disruptions throughout the day disrupt
student and staff work. Lunches,
homework, dress code, projects, last
minute forms and funds, and any other
items should be tended to prior to the
beginning of the school day. Your co-
operation in this matter will support us
in maximizing our order and
productivity at the school.
2018 - 2019 ∙ ROOTED IN CHRIST: WE BELONG, WE BELIEVE, WE BECOME
HOMEWORK AND
COMMUNICATION Every student should be receiving regular
homework and every class has a means of
communicating this important aspect of
school to parents—whether it be via agenda,
communication pouches or folders or
electronically through apps such as Remind
101, Twitter or Instagram. This information
has or will be communicated to you. If you
are unsure, please contact your classroom
teacher immediately.
Be sure to support homework expectations.
Homework in grade school reinforces and
extends classroom learning and helps kids
practice important study skills. It also helps
them develop a sense of responsibility and a
work ethic that will benefit them beyond the
classroom. In addition to making sure your
child knows that you see homework as a
priority, you can help by creating an effective
study environment. Any well-lit,
comfortable, and quiet workspace with the
necessary supplies will do. Avoiding
distractions (like a TV in the background or
computer games in the same space) and
setting up a start and end time can also help.
While your child does homework, be
available to interpret assignment
instructions, offer guidance, answer
questions, and review the completed work.
But resist the urge to provide the correct
answers or complete the assignments
yourself. Learning from mistakes is part of
the process and you don't want to take this
away from your child. (www.kidshealth.org).
We thank you for your partnership in
student success!

Staff Communications &
Appointments Every effort will be made by your child’s
teacher to keep you informed of his/her progress and involvement in class. If you wish to speak with a teacher, a note sent with your child requesting a call is usually sufficient.
If, however, you wish to contact a teacher by telephone, please telephone the office. If the teacher is not available at the time of your call, you are asked to leave a message with your name and the name of your child should last names be different, and the phone numbers of where you can be reached. No adult outside of school staff should
arrive unannounced during school hours to any space in the school other than
the front office. Not only is it disruptive to classes, but it does not provide the
opportunity for good communication and creates a safety alert to staff. To report firstly to the front office is also a Safe Schools Policy: all visits to the school must begin at the front office where
visitors must wait for instructions. If you have a scheduled appointment with the
teacher and/or Principal and cannot make the appointment, please call the school as soon as possible and we will
reschedule. At times, full resource teams prepare for meetings and last
minute cancellations result in delays in gathering School Support Teams a
second time. Be sure to honour all school appointments.

CELL PHONES AND ELECTRONICS
Please do not send any electronic devices with your child(ren). If you feel that your child needs to carry a cell phone to and from school, please note that it MUST be turned off and put away while on school property UNLESS THE TEACHER PERMITS SPECIFIC USE OF THE DEVICE FOR EDUCATION PURPOSES (BYOD POLICY) AND THAT TEACHER IS DIRECTLY SUPERVISING THE USE OF THE DEVICE. If you have an urgent matter, we will be happy to get your child for you. Simply call the office. The school is not responsible for lost, stolen or damaged items. Should students not comply with this simple rule, the electronic device can be confiscated. These devices have proven to be very distracting and have disrupted lessons. It is imperative that all students, when using their devices or school devices accessing the TCDSB electronic communications systems under staff supervision, comply by the rules of the Acceptable Use Policy of the TCDSB when accessing data or devices. Students must follow the AUP in order to prevent themselves from being banned from usage. The rule remains: OFF AND INVISIBLE”.

**NEW** SAFE ARRIVAL: THE NEW WAY TO REPORT STUDENT ABSENCE AND LATENESS SafeArrival is an absence management feature with SchoolMessenger that
improves student safety and makes it easy for you to let the school know about your child’s absence. You are asked to report your child’s absence in advance whenever possible using one of these convenient methods: SchoolMessenger app (free)
1. Provide your email address to the school. 2. Get the app from the Apple App Store or the
Google Play Store (or from the links at https://go.schoolmessenger.com).
3. Tap Sign Up to create your account. 4. Select Attendance from the menu, and then
select Report an Absence.
Web and Mobile Web: go.schoolmessenger.com
1. Provide your email address to the school. 2. Go to the website. 3. Click Sign Up to create your account. 4. Select Attendance from the menu, then select
Report an Absence
Interactive Toll-free Phone
1. Call the toll-free, interactive telephone system at 1 (833) 251-3286.
2. Follow the instructions to report an absence.
Absences can be reported in advance:
• 24 hours/day • 7 days a week • For any school day in the school term
Up to the cut-off time on the day of the absence.
Whenever an absence is reported or updated, you will receive a confirmation notice by email and/or text message (assuming you have provided your contact information to the school).
If you don’t report your child’s absence in advance, the automated notification system will try to contact you (using the communication preferences if you have set them up in the SchoolMessenger app). This may include
push notifications to the app, email, SMS text message, phone calls. You will be asked to provide the reason for your child’s absence immediately. You may do so using the phone line, website or mobile app.
If an absence is not explained within approximately 20 minutes of the time that the school starts the notification process, school staff will follow-up to make sure that your child is safe. If you try to explain an absence using SafeArrival but are then told that it is past the cut-off time, please contact the school directly.
If you don’t want to receive notifications when your child is absent,
be sure to report your child’s absence in advance. If you do receive notifications of your child’s absence, be sure to provide the reason as quickly as possible, using one of the 3 methods listed above or during the phone call notification itself.
Excursions and Field Trips
Educational trips which extend learning opportunities in curriculum areas do take place from time to time. Teachers follow appropriate Board procedures when planning these excursions. A limited number of trips may be planned by teachers. BY LAW the school must have on file permission forms which must be signed by the parents/guardians. If on the day of the excursion your child did not return his/her form, the student will remain at the school. VERBAL TELEPHONE PERMISSION IS NEVER ACCEPTABLE IN THESE CIRCUMSTANCES. In order to avoid disappointment, hand in forms as early as possible. This helps teachers to organize groupings for supervision and to finalize payment and number of attendees for busses and venues. Last minute items delay departures and create disruptions to an otherwise enjoyable day. IMPORTANT: PLEASE INFORM THE OFFICE OF ANY
CHANGES REGARDING CONTACT INFORMATION. IN
THE CASE OF AN EMERGENCY, WE WOULD NEED
TO CONTACT YOU. WE CANNOT DO SO SHOULD
YOUR CONTACT INFORMATION NOT BE UP TO
DATE. BE SURE TO UPDATE YOUR CURRENT
CONTACT INFORMATION AND YOUR EMERGENCY

LUNCHTIME
DOES YOUR CHILD HAVE A
NUTRITIOUS AND SATISFYING LUNCH
THAT WILL HEALTHILY SUSTAIN
THEM THROUGHOUT THEIR LONG
DAY?
(JUST A NOTE TO PARENTS: YOU ARE
DOING A VERY GOOD JOB!! KEEP IT
UP…WE HAVE NOTICED A
DIFFERENCE!!!)
One of the benefits of the media is how it
informs us regarding our children’s health and the
importance of good nutrition for PROPER
GROWTH AND TO SUSTAIN FOCUS AND
ENERGY.
Many children come to school with an
excellent lunch and snacks that they enjoy and that
are not processed or pre-packaged. Although the
school can provide the occasional snack, providing
the best nutrition is a parental responsibility and
should be handled conscientiously, as it is for the
many of our students. It has been noted that several
students crave and search for good, nutritious food
from other students. Others are clearly eating
foods that are processed, filled with empty calories
and refined sugar. This clearly effects their focus
and behavior. Please make good nutrition and
sustenance for proper growth a priority for your
child’s busy day and healthy development.
NO PERMISSIONS TO LEAVE SCHOOL
GROUNDS:
To further ensure student well-being and safety,
students will not be permitted to leave school
property to purchase a lunch at a neighborhood
food establishment unless they are signed out
and accompanied by the parent/ guardian of the
child, or a PRE-authorized adult. The
responsible, pre-authorized adult must have
previous written consent from the parent, a record
of which must be on file in the school office.
Children are encouraged to eat lunch at home if a
parent or caregiver is at home every day.
Children going home for lunch should leave
the school no later than 11:15 a.m and return
to school no later than 12:13pm.
If your child eats lunch at school, please
ensure that he/she brings a lunch to school
every day. We ask that lunches not be
brought to school for the students.
In emergencies, when lunch must be
delivered please, DO NOT BRING
FAST FOOD :
WE MUST ALL support healthy eating
initiatives for overall health.
**We ask that lunches brought in be clearly
marked and left with the office staff in the main
office by 11:15 or SOONER. Students can pick
up their lunch at THE OFFICE during their
respective lunch period. Parents/Guardians
will not be permitted to drop off lunches in the
classrooms, nor will students be permitted to
pick up their lunches during class time. This is
to minimize disruption during important
instructional time in the classroom.
The school is not responsible should a lunch
go ‘missing’ or is dropped or spilled.
Students staying at school for lunch must
follow all the lunch rules.
Students have limited time to finish their lunches
so it is important to be on time.
PLEASE NOTE: IF THE SCHOOL HAS ANY
CONCERNS REGARDING A STUDENTS’ WELL
BEING, WHICH INCLUDES REGULAR, HEALTHLY
LUNCHES, STAFF WILL CONSULT WITH
ADMINISTRATION WITH THEIR CONCERNS.
FOLLOW UP MAY INCLUDE CONTACT WITH THE
PARENT BY THE TEACHER OR
ADMINISTRATION, SOCIAL WORK
CONSULTATION, OR CATHOLIC CHILDREN’S
AID CONSULTATION FOR SUPPORT. IF YOU
HAVE DIFFICULTY MEETING YOUR CHILD’S
NUTRITIONAL NEEDS, PLEASE CONTACT YOUR
CHILD’S TEACHER OR THE PRINCIPAL TO
DISCUSS. THANK YOU.

-PEDESTRIAN AND DRIVER SAFETY REMINDERS-
BOTH SIDES OF DUCKWORTH STREET (The front of the school) IS A PICK UP AND DROP
OFF AREA FOR BUSES ONLY. THE SCHOOL OR BOARD ARE NOT
RESPONSIBLE FOR ANY TICKETS INCURRED BY ANYONE NOT FOLLOWING TRAFFIC
LAWS OR PARKING BYLAWS. READ SIGNAGE CAREFULLY AND PLEASE FOLLOW SUGGESTIONS FOR THE SAFETY OF ALL AS
PROVIDED BELOW; CARE-COURTESY-VIGILANCE FOR THE
SAFETY OF ALL
***MORNING DROP OFF: WHENEVER POSSIBLE, WALK TO SCHOOL***
➢ USE THURODALE DRIVE AND
SURROUNDING STREETS. IT IS BETTER TO WALK A BIT OF A DISTANCE THAN TO HAVE INCIDENCES OCCUR DUE TO CONGESTION ISSUES.
➢ STUDENTS MUST WAIT IN THE
SCHOOLYARD AND ENTER THE SCHOOL WITH THEIR CLASSES AT THE 8:30 BELL.
➢ AVOID USING THE SCHOOL PARKING
LOT. USING THE PARKING LOT POSES DANGERS FOR PEDESTRIANS, PREVENTS TEACHERS FROM TENDING TO THEIR DAILY DUTIES AND BLOCKS OTHERS FROM LEAVING. The school parking lot is not a “kiss and ride”
or drop off area. It is VERY DANGEROUS to drop off a child in an active and crowded
parking lot. Use the surrounding streets and be careful when driving and walking during the busy drop off and pick up times.
***AFTERNOON PICK UP: WHENEVER POSSIBLE, WALK HOME***
➢ STUDENTS PICKED UP AT THE END OF
THE DAY IN THE SCHOOLYARD SHOULE BE WALKED SAFELY TO
THEIR VEHICLES OR HOME. BE SURE TO HOLD YOUR CHILD’S HAND. REMIND YOU CHILD NOT TO RUN AND TO STOP, AND TO LOOK AND LISTEN. DO NOT USE DUCKWORTH STREET FOR PICK UP OR DROP OFF.
STUDENTS MUST NOT BE PICKED UP FROM THE BUS LINE OR IN THE FRONT FOYER.
➢ NO STUDENT IS TO BE SIGNED OUT AT
THE END OF THE DAY BETWEEN 2:30 AND 3:00 PM UNLESS WRITTEN NOTICE HAS BEEN PROVIDED TO THE CLASSROOM TEACHER IN THE MORNING.
SIGNOUT DURING THE FINAL HALF HOUR OF THE DAY DISRUPTS LEARNING AND CREATES CONGESTION AND CONFUSION IN THE FRONT OFFICE AT ONE OF THE BUSIEST TIMES OF THE DAY. DISMISSAL IS AT 3:00 PM.
WE MUST ALL RESPECT THESE PROCEDURES AND TIMES.
WE MUST ALL WORK TOGETHER FOR THE SAFETY
AND LEARNING OF ALL STUDENTS. **************************************************
REMEMBER: SAFETY OVER CONVENIENCE!!! **************************************************
DISRUPTIONS TO THE SCHOOL DAY: PLEASE HAVE ALL ITEMS TAKEN CARE OF PRIOR
TO THE SCHOOL DAY START
As a school of almost 700 students, it is very
important that we all work efficiently in our
homes and our school. Unnecessary
disruptions throughout the day delays student
and staff work. Lunches, homework, visits
and any other items should be tended to prior
to the beginning of the school
day. Your co-operation in this
matter will support us in
maximizing our order and
productivity at the school.
***ATTENTION: DOES YOUR CHILD TAKE THE SCHOOL BUS???*** Please note: If your child is registered to ride the school bus, he or she must
2018 - 2019 ∙ ROOTED IN CHRIST: WE BELONG, WE BELIEVE, WE BECOME
ride the school bus and not take the liberty to walk home or be picked up from the bus line on any given day. All students must adhere to all bus safety rules and must ride the buses to and from school every day. Failure to do so can lead to the loss of bus privileges and parents will be responsible to devise a plan for safe travel to and from school for their child. Please discuss this with your child if he or she is a bus student. Students either take the bus each day or they forfeit the use of school bus transportation. When bus students spontaneously decide to walk home or parents give permission to do so sporadically, there are gaps to safety. A STUDENT IS EITHER ON THE BUS OR OFF. THERE ARE NO HOP OFF /HOP ON OPTIONS. FRIENDS NOT ON THE BUS LIST ARE NOT PERMITTED TO TAKE THE BUS FOR “VISITS”. Please keep in mind that there are NINE buses that operate out of the school at the end of each day so we really do need your support. We appreciate your cooperation with this very important safety matter. SCHOOL SAFETY & VISITORS: In an effort to : keep our students safe at all times, the following has been implemented: ➢ All school doors are kept locked.
➢All visitors entering the school grounds and/or building, including parents/guardians, babysitters and siblings, must first report to the office to identify themselves. THIS IS A SCHOOL BOARD/SAFE SCHOOLS POLICY. ➢Parents are to drop off their children in the schoolyard at the beginning of the day. ➢Children are to wait in the yard until their teachers come to pick them up when the bell rings. *After school, parents are asked to pick up their children in the school yard. Because of the large number of children, the small space and lack of supervision, children cannot wait in the main office to be picked up after school. Dismissal is at 3 pm. Please make sure that all children are picked up on time.
***A NOTE TO PARENTS: IF YOU ARE IN THE
BUILDING DURING A LOCKDOWN, PLEASE ENSURE
THAT YOU TAKE PART IN THIS EMERGENCY
PROCEDURE, REMAINING INDOORS AND
PARTICIPATING AS REQUESTED SO AS NOT TO
COMPROMISE THE SAFETY OF OUR STUDENTS BY
EXITING OR OPENING DOORS AT ANY TIME
DURING A LOCKDOWN.***
PEDICULOSIS: Pediculosis is commonly known as
lice, is a common, but pesky problem in schools and
among children. Children are reminded not
to share caps or hats, combs and brushes
or hair accessories. Parents are
encouraged to check regularly and to use
preventative measures to ensure that their
child(ren) do not contract any lice.
Kids and Flu The flu germs spread when people cough, sneeze or
talk. The flu germs can also live on surfaces like
toys, countertops, and door handles for up to eight
hours.
2018 - 2019 ∙ ROOTED IN CHRIST: WE BELONG, WE BELIEVE, WE BECOME
Students can pass the flu germs to each other, to
school staff and to family members before they
show symptoms. Children under five, seniors and
people in poor health are at greater risk of
complications from flu.
Vaccination is the best protection against flu. It
takes 2 weeks for the vaccine to be fully effective so
get it early.
Tips on staying healthy this flu Season:
1. Get your flu shot early 2. Wash your hands often 3. Avoid touching face and eyes 4. Cover your cough or sneeze 5. Do not share drinking cups and utensils 6. Disinfect common surfaces like door
handles, hand railings, keyboards, cell
phones and tablets.

Update on Negotiations with CUPE The Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) is involved in province-wide, central collective bargaining with the Council of Trustee Associations and the provincial government. At the Toronto Catholic District School Board (TCDSB), CUPE represents caretaking, maintenance and warehouse staff, office clerical and technical staff, school based support staff including Child and Youth Workers and Education Assistants, and secondary school supervisors as well as International Language Instructors. The TCDSB has been advised that the members of the CUPE may begin job action as early as Monday, September 30, beginning with work-to-rule sanctions. The health and safety of students and staff is deeply important to us. If there is any impact to regular school operations, parents will receive communications through the following methods:
• School Messenger (please ensure that your school has current and up to date telephone numbers and email addresses on file for your family)
• Twitter (follow @TCDSB)
• TCDSB website www.tcdsb.org
• 24-hour telephone information line 416-222-8282 ext. 2873 The Board wishes to assure parents and students that every effort will be made to ensure that all elementary and secondary schools, day care centres, before- and after-school programs and nutrition programs will continue to remain open as long as it is safe to do so. School bus transportation for eligible students will continue. Parents are encouraged to contact their local school principal with any questions or issues of local concern.
