Baptism of the Lord

“After me comes he who is mightier than I, the thong of

whose sandals I am not worthy to stoop down and untie.”

– Mark 1:7

We are put on this earth to love God, love our neighbor and

make disciples. How many times does our own pride and

ego get in the way on fulfilling God’s plan for us? Hum-

bling ourselves before God and putting Him first in all

things should be our top priority.

Although John was the first genuine prophet in 400 years,

Jesus the Messiah would be infinitely greater than he. John

was pointing out how insignificant he was compared to the

One who was coming. John was not even worthy of doing

the most menial tasks for Him, like untying His sandals.

What John began, Jesus finished. What John prepared, Je-

sus fulfilled. Therefore we each need to remember that as

Jesus' followers we are to be submissive to His Will in our

lives. As we make the choice to put Him first, our lives will

become more fruitful and fulfilled.

“STONGER” Finding Hope in Fragile Places

For each of us, the same truth applies. We all need to pursue a closer relationship with the God of the Bible. A rela-

tionship with the God of Glory is the only way we will ever walk in strength and victory on this earth. During this

retreat we will ask ourselves . . . What needs to change in me so that I may live in the strength God promises to pro-

vide? We will leave knowing . . . God is stronger than everything!

THE WATERS OF BAPTISM

When new sod is put in, it needs constant saturation with water. Landscapers say that this “knits” the sod to the

soil. The same when a branch is grafted onto a tree: the poultice that joins them at the splice must be kept wet at all

times. Water is the stuff that binds the very cells of our bodies together. No wonder religions throughout all times and

cultures have used it so prominently. When Jesus stepped into the Jordan for baptism, he “knit” himself to what had

come before him. By going to the Jordan, he made himself one with the people of Israel who had crossed it into their

Promised Land. With John the Baptist, Christ wove himself into the prophetic tradition that heralded the coming reign

of God. He had become fully human in the waters of Mary’s womb, and by partaking in the rite of the baptism of re-

pentance, Jesus identified himself with our sinful, frail humanity. It is through the waters of baptism that Christ con-

tinues to graft new members onto his Body, the Church. Through these waters we are cleansed from sin and filled

with the promise of grace, given our destiny for eternal life. For us, as for Jesus, it is also the waters of baptism that

inaugurate our mission to proclaim the Good News. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

Sanctity of Life Sunday

January 18, 2015

Life is Precious

From the earliest moments in the womb to the last breath

before death, human life reflects the image of God. Life is

precious because God is good.

Yet the goodness of life is tarnished by man’s prideful rebel-

lion. Lives are marginalized or disregarded, sometimes only

for the sake of convenience. On Sanctity of Life Sunday, we

celebrate the unique character of human life.
