DEFICIT REDUCTION

Summer is definitely here!

Attendance is light but the doors are still open.

Watch for a deficit reduction envelope in your envelope packet or through a parish-wide

mailing. Prayerfully consider how you can help the parish thrive in these leaner months.

June 19—July 30th, Tuesday evenings from 7:00-8:30 pm in the library

featuring a lectionary based Bible study and utilizing the readings from the past Sunday and the

upcoming readings for the next Sunday, breaking open and trying to understand the message. All

are invited to join us.

Today's Gospel offers a rare framework -- a story in a story. Most

of the healing miracles are standalone encounters. One person ap-

proaches Jesus, demonstrates faith, and is healed. The evangelist

tells the next story. This Gospel, however, is different. Jesus is on

his way to heal one person, a young girl of twelve, and is interrupt-

ed on his journey by "a woman afflicted with hemorrhages." She

bravely approaches Jesus in a crowd, despite being ritually unclean

from her bleeding, and stretches out to touch his cloak. She is

healed! Jesus meets her eye, confirms her faith, and continues on

to resurrect the young girl.

Reading this passage, it might be easier to identify with one story -

- the long-suffering woman or the young, innocent girl -- and to

move past the other. But here they sit side by side. The girl is

twelve. The woman has been suffering for twelve years. For the

Gospel writers, number parallels have deep symbolic meaning.

Between the woman and the young girl, we are not one or the oth-

er. We are both. None of us had a perfect childhood, perfect fami-

lies, or a perfect peer group. As we endure pain, disappointment, or

unmet expectations, it can feel like a part of our childhood hopes

have died. Our coping mechanisms, social adaptations, and hidden

secrets can make us the "walking wounded" in some respects. Je-

sus wants to do more than simply staunch the bleeding. His healing hand makes dead things come alive. He

awakens the dreams that are asleep. This process requires prayer, conversations with trusted community and

spiritual mentors, and critical looks at difficult areas of our life. However, we can believe the words of our Lord.

If we approach Jesus in faith, believing that he wants to heal and save, we, too, will hear his calming words spo-

ken over the hurts of our life. "I say to you, arise!" "Go in peace."

Spiritual Direction

Have you heard of the ancient Catholic prac-tice of Spiritual Direction? Very early in our history and through the centuries individuals have sought out companions and guides for their spiritual growth. Today, women and men, lay folk and members of the clergy rely on trained spiritual companions to walk with them on the spiritual journey. If you would like more information but cannot attend that even-ing, email Diane Saunders or Cathy Olds [email protected]. Come and see what spiritual direction is all about.

ST. VINCENT DEPAUL

Spiritual In today’s Gospel we see how in faith, Jarius asked Jesus to heal his daughter and how Jesus then answered his prayer. In prayer we also come to know that we are loved by God, and in that trust we ask for healing for ourselves, our loved ones and all those who are suffering Pantry At this time the pantry needs are: jelly, canned items such as beef stew, tuna, ravioli, and spaghetti O’s, spaghetti sauces and rice. Please drop items in the SVdP grocery carts located outside of church during weekend Mass. Thank you for help-ing us to help those in need. Join us... We welcome new members in all areas, whether it is picking up food donations, filling food bags for deliv-ery, answering phones, making home visits to those in need, or clerical. Please call us at 480-807-1493 so we can tell you more about this wonderful oppor-tunity to serve.

Diocese has a special collection many people are, at

times, placing their weekly tithe in the Diocese Spe-

they are right together in your envelope package. It is

important to use the correct envelope so your offer-

ing is posted to the correct account. Thank you.
