REFLECTIONS / STEWARDSHIP PAGE 3 MAY 1, 2016

My Brothers and Sisters in Christ, Peace and peace of mind are at the forefront of our celebration today on this Sixth Sunday of East-er. Our reading from the Acts of the Apostles shows us how the early church learned to listen to the Holy Spirit and work together to bring about peace of mind to the members of the Christian community. Today’s gospel reading from John continues the farewell discourse of Jesus. Central to the gospel reading are the words of Jesus. Jesus boldly promises that the Holy Spirit will remind us of all Jesus taught and will continue teaching us. Jesus then bequeaths his “shalom” (his peace) with the words “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you.” (Jn 14:27) Peace is his farewell, and his gift to the disciples (and us). Pope Francis in his message for this year’s celebration of the World Day of Peace said “Peace is both God’s gift and a human achievement. As a gift of God, it is entrusted to all men and women, who are called to attain it.” The peace Jesus left his disciples and us with and which is God’s gift, this “shalom” is soul-deep, rock-solid, enduring life’s inward pain and outward storms. This “shalom” within us always bears fruit in our lives that is modeled on Jesus’ own self-sacri ice, thus giving glory to the Father and giving life to others. Okay, I keep using the word “shalom” and you might ask what does the word mean? The Hebrew word “shalom” found in the Old Testament means the wellbeing of daily life, a total harmony with nature, God and self, dwelling in security, free from fear. “Shalom” is the sum of all the bene its of God’s presence with his people. Shalom is the fruit of the covenant between God and believers. Jesus’ promise of peace speaks in every age to the troubled heart of the human person. In the words of the 1983 Pastoral Letter of the U. S. Bishops on peace (The Challenge of Peace: God’s Promise and Our Response) “peacemaking is not an optional commitment. It is a requirement of our faith.” Today as a community we also celebrate another “Works of Mercy” Sunday and for me peace and the Corporal and Spiritual Works of Mercy go hand in hand for if we are not, as Jesus taught us, merciful like our heavenly Father, how can we call ourselves “peacemakers”? We are called to stop and help alleviate the sufferings of this world and the pain of our brothers and sisters, using whatever means are at hand, beginning with our own time, however busy we may be. Since our last “Works of Mercy” Sunday so many of you have heeded Jesus’ teaching by providing cookies to our Feed the Hungry Ministry, donating blankets and socks for the homeless, volunteering with St. Vincent de Paul and Isaac Society ministries and writing letters to the homebound and many other acts of mercy. In all these ways you have been the hands, feet and face of God and his mercy and brought a measure of peace to those whose lives you touched. Shalom, Faithful

Men of St. Catherine’s please consider joining us on Mother’s Day for a special men’s choir at the 10:15 am Mass. There will be rehearsal at 4:00 pm today, May 1st in the Church. Thank you for celebrating the mothers of our community in this special way.

RESPECTLIFEMINISTRYPlease join us to pray for the unborn and their mothers on the 1st Saturday of every month from 9:00 am to 10:00 am at Planned Parenthood, Riverside. The next gathering date is Saturday,May7that9:00am.We will meet in front of the Planned Parenthood on Arlington Avenue (middle of the block between Magnolia and Brockton Avenues) to pray, hold signs and encourage community awareness. Both the babies and their mothers need our prayers and our help. The babies are defense-less and there are better and healthier alternatives for the mother, for example, adoption. Sometimes all that is need-ed is an ultrasound so they can actually see their baby, alive. Riverside Life Services is nearby and provides free ultra-sounds and other help, like baby clothes and diapers. It is an eleven circuit labyrinth from our mystical past. The labyrinth has three paths, the going in represents the Path of Letting Go, the Center is the second called the Path of Enlight-enment and also a meditation on Creation, the third is the way out, the Path of Union. The labyrinth repre-sents our life's journey to God and it is through our life that we come to know God. An ancient archetype, the labyrinth has found re-newed use in today's world and many who walk it ind it to be a very good tool for meditation. JUBILEEYEAROFMERCYMay1,2016—SixthSundayofEasterIn formal documents, presentations, and homilies outlining the purpose of this JubileeYearofMercy, Pope Francis explains that compassion and understanding for those in dif icult situations is not only our individual responsibility, but something the whole Church of i-cially needs to manifest. Today’s Acts of the Apostles reading presents a moving example of the early church do-ing precisely that. Prayerful openness to the Holy Spirit assures the assembly that they have not acted alone in discerning the correct resolution: “It is the decision of the Holy Spirit and of us.” And they have chosen the com-passionate response: “not to place on you any burden beyond these necessities” (Acts 15:28). Yet how daringly creative—the Jewish majority sets aside lifelong rituals that establish spiritual identity and express covenant i-delity. How radically trustful—the church af irms universally valid principles while respecting uniquely local and personal situations. Exactly the grace Pope Francis prays this Jubilee Year will renew in today’s Church! —Peter Scagnelli, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

News from our Parish School Excellence in Education, Body, Mind & Spirit

Winding Down and Looking Forward

Wow, it’s already May and only one more month of school! The last two months have been so full – Holy Week and Easter received a great deal of direct focus (as it should), RIMS Science Fair, multiple field trips, along with the end of Basketball (our Boys A Team finished 2nd), and Spring Concert - Grandparents’ Day. And the next month and a half looks even busier – but all in the name of providing our students with the most comprehensive education available to empower them, body, mind, and spirit.

Before I get too worried about the frenetic activity, a dose of lunch recess reminds me that the choices our children have are truly an enhancement, not a burden. Some choose kickball, others swings, slide, games, some read. None does it all, but all appear to like their choices, and all appear to be making the most of their lunch recess. To have a school with such a variety of programs and extra-curricular activities as we do keeps our staff busy making sure that each event and subject comes off well, and that our children are enhanced by the variety. I truly believe we offer our children the best choice in education available anywhere in the Riverside area, and next year should be even better.

Would you like your children to be part of our program? We will hold our Campus Tours on Friday May 20th from 4:00 pm until 5:00 pm (when our Family Fun Night begins). You and your children can tour our facilities, meet our teachers, and talk with our parents – then stay and have fun with our entire school community. If you would like to be a part of our exciting program, or if you have friends or grandchildren who would like to see our program, or find out more about our parish school. All are welcome. See you on the 20th!

Thank you and God Bless,

Enrique Landin Telephone: (951) 684-1091 Principal Email: [email protected] Website: www.stcofa1.org

Copyright © 2009, World Library Publications. All rights reserved.
