Message from our Pastor

TheHistoryoftheNacionalEncuentrosforHispanicMinistry The main objective of the process of Encuentro is to discern the way in which the Church in the United States responds to the Hispanic/Latino presence, and to strengthen the way in which Hispanics/Latinos respond as a Church. The I Encuentro (1972) allowed us to gain visibility and to express our needs, aspirations, and contributions as baptized per-sons and members of the Church in the United States. In the II Encuentro (1977), we identi ied ourselves as a community of Hispanic Catholics that is diverse, yet uni ied by a com-mon faith, history, culture, and language. We also discerned a way of being a Church based on the ecclesiology of communion and a preferential option for the poor and those who have fallen away. With the II Encuentro we identi ied ourselves as Pueblo Hispano: Pueblo de Dios en Marcha (People of God in Action). The III Encuentro (1985) allowed us to articulate a clear direction of the Church’s response to the Hispanic presence and our response as an integral part of that Church. This vision was recorded in the National Pastoral Plan for Hispanic Ministry (1988) and in a model of a Church that is evangelizing, communitarian, and missionary. With the III Encuentro we recog-nized ourselves as Pueblo Hispano: Voz Profetica (Hispanic People: Prophetic Voice). The Encuentro 2000 (IV Encuentro) allowed us to host and share the experience of Encuentro with all of the cultures and races that make up the Church in the United States. The vision of a Church where all are welcome emerges from our most profound identity as a mestizo people that recognizes itself as a pilgrim people called to solidarity and to unity in diversity, as expressed in its overall theme Many Faces in God’s House, Unity in Diversity. The Primer Encuentro Nacional Hispano de Pastoral Juvenil (2006) allowed us to listen to the voices of Hispanic/Latino youth and to discern the best ways to respond to their needs and aspirations, as well as to recognize their contributions as privileged protagonists of the present and future Church in the United States. The V Encuentro Nacional Hispano de Pastoral will encourage us to continue our walk as God’s people, to raise our prophetic voice once more, and to discern pastoral priorities and strategies that are most appropriate to the present time. With the V Encuentro, we are called to be a Pueblo Hispano: Alegres Discıpulos en Mision (Hispanic People: Joyful Disciples in Mission). Source: USCCB, “National Encuentro.” N.B. Translations in parentheses are additions to the text. -Fr. Gene Sabio, MSC FirstSundayofAdvent—DoWhatYouCan

The reading from the prophet Isaiah this Sunday contains a remarkable prediction—the end of war between nations (Isaiah 2:4). While most of the good predictions of the prophets were fulfilled in Jesus, we still await the end of all wars. So why hasn’t that one been fulfilled? We can look to the second reading and the Gospel for some hints.

Both readings talk about being awake and ready for our salvation (Romans 13:12) or the coming of the Son of Man (Matthew 24:39). Being awake doesn’t mean consuming lots of coffee or turning the music volume all the way up. Paul calls it “putting on the Lord Jesus Christ” as a soldier would put on armor before a battle. He even mentions rivalry and jealousy as attitudes to avoid. Both of those vices have been the cause of many wars in our history. What if we not only avoided them, but also taught our children to avoid them? What if everyone eventually learned not to be jealous and hateful?

We are a long way from ending all wars. There are still people who teach hate to the poor instead of helping to feed them. There are still people who get rich selling the weapons of war. This brings us back to the first reading, in which Isaiah speaks of beating swords into plowshares. Do we have enough faith in God’s love to stop building weapons and use those resources to feed the hungry or cure diseases in underprivileged countries? Until we convert everyone to follow-ing Jesus, that’s not likely. The Gospel calls us to be ready. Maybe we need to be ready to share our faith. Maybe we have to be awake to any opportunity to show God’s love to those around us. Are we afraid to offer to pray for someone in need? Maybe we need to put on the “armor of light,” as St. Paul calls it. Instead of trying to stop all wars, could we at least show forgiveness to someone who has hurt us?

Jesus never said to do the impossible. If we can be ready to see Jesus in those around us, to show his love to those who need it, or just be patient with other people’s faults and weaknesses, we may not stop all wars, but we will be prepared for the coming of the Prince of Peace. RESPECTLIFEMINISTRYPlease join us to pray for the unborn and their mothers on the 1st Saturday of every month from 9:00 am to 10:00 am at Planned Parenthood, Riverside. The next gathering date is Saturday,December3rdat9:00am.We will meet in front of the Planned Parenthood on Arlington Avenue (middle of the block between Magnolia and Brockton Avenues) to pray, hold signs and encourage community awareness. Both the babies and their mothers need our prayers and our help. The babies are defenseless and there are better and healthier alternatives for the mother, for example, adoption. Sometimes all that is needed is an ultrasound so they can actually see their baby, alive. Riverside Life Services is nearby and provides free ultrasounds and other help, such as baby clothes and diapers. The tree will stand on Joseph's side of the church and will be adorned with paper ornaments with age and gender of a deserv-ing child in need of a Christmas gift.

Take an ornament home and pray about the child who is to re-ceive this gift. Please LEAVE THE GIFT UNWRAPPED and place it under the tree with the PAPER ORNAMENT SECURE-LY ATTACHED. We also ask that you bring an ornament and place it in the orna-ment box by the tree. Please place all gifts under the tree by DECEMBER 18th to give us adequate time for shipping.

There will be envelopes on the tree for those who would like to help with our ever increasing shipping cost. Please take one and put it in the collection with your weekly offering (MAKE CHECKS PAYABLE TO ST. CATHERINE WITH C.M.O. ON THE MEMO LINE), if cash please you a visitor’s envelope and put C.M.O on the front.

A Weekend of Discovery . . . A Lifetime of Love

One Spirit, One Community

Advent at your Parish School

Thanksgiving is over, but before we get to Christmas, we must be patient and enjoy the Advent season. Advent is the season in which we prepare for the coming of Christ into our world – and this is important for our children to thoroughly embrace: the rea-son for the season is Jesus come to us as one of us – that’s the ultimate gift, and it’s one we should carefully prepare for. At St. Catherine of Alexandria Parish School, we will hold our Christmas Program on December 20th, and our vacation begins on the 22nd (and school resumes on January 4th this year). These can become the focus of the next few weeks in most schools, and they are important to our families – but we do not lose the Advent Season at St. Catherine’s. Our children take this time in class to reflect upon the religious walk they have, and how well they are living out their relationship with Jesus. They are invited to the Sacrament of Reconciliation for those who can receive it, and some of our grades write Christmas cards to our troops serving over-seas. Other grades combine money to buy presents for those families experiencing difficulties. This year we are teaming up with local firefighters and will conduct a schoolwide toy drive. Our kids are taught in multiple ways that the baby Jesus coming to the world should be seen in the actions they do for others. May God bless you and your family as we embrace the message of Advent – Jesus Christ comes to us as we bring him to those around us. Thank you and God Bless,

PRIMERDOMINGODEADVIENTOESTARPREPARADO Debes estar preparado.
