Divine Mercy Sunday Today’s Readings First Reading: A large number of people gathered, bringing the sick, and all were cured (Acts 5). Psalm: Give thanks to the Lord for he is good, his love is everlasting (Psalm 118). Second Reading: Do not be afraid. I am the first and the last, the one who lives (Revelation 1). Gospel: The risen Christ comes to his disciples with peace and the Spirit. The absent Thomas doubts (John 20). Readings for the Week Monday: Acts 4:23-31-37; Ps 2:1-4, 7-9; Jn 3:1-8 Tuesday: Acts 4:32-37; Ps 93:1-2, 5; Jn 3:7b-15 Wednesday: Acts 5:17-26; Ps 34:2-9; Jn 3:16-21 Thursday: Acts 5:27-33; Ps 34:2, 9, 17-20; Jn 3:31-36 Friday: 1 Cor 15:1-8; Ps 19:2-5; Jn 14:6-14 Saturday: Acts 6:1-7; Ps 33:1-2, 4-5, 18-19; Jn 6:16-21 Sunday: Acts 5:27-32, 40b-41; Ps 30:2, 4-6, 11-13; Rev 5:11-14; Jn 21:1-19 Saints and Special Observances Sunday: Second Sunday of Easter (or Sunday of Divine Mercy) Monday: St. Catherine of Siena Tuesday: St. Pius V Wednesday: St. Joseph the Worker Thursday: St. Athanasius Friday: Ss. Philip and James; First Friday Saturday: First Saturday Scripture Reflection Seeing is believing! Since cellphone screens connect us instantly to social media, live TV, and loved ones’ faces near and far, “Doubting Thomas” could be our patron saint: “Unless I see, I will not believe!” But how comforting for any of us who share Thomas’s doubt, or love “doubters” who do, to see how kindly Jesus responds. By offering the very evidence that Thomas demanded, Jesus doesn’t scold Thomas, but seems to understand such skepticism. Could Jesus have been thinking of us, who long to believe that “Jesus is risen!” but see so much suffering, and perhaps even cause some, that we wonder, how could something so wonderful be true? In today’s reading from the Acts of the Apostles, the risen Jesus’ healing love comforts through disciples who love others. In Revelation, “our brother John” doesn’t just claim he saw Jesus alive, but passes on Jesus’ life-giving words, “Do not be afraid.” Seeing Jesus in others is believing! Archdiocesan Family Prayer Loving and faithful God, through the years the people of our archdiocese have appreciated the prayers and love of Our Lady of Prompt Succor in times of war, disaster, epidemic and illness. We come to you, Father, with Mary our Mother, and ask you to help us in the battle of today against violence, murder and racism. We implore you to give us your wisdom that we may build a community founded on the values of Jesus, which gives respect to the life and dignity of all people. Bless parents that they may form their children in faith. Bless and protect our youth that they may be peacemakers of our time. Give consolation to those who have lost loved ones through violence. Hear our prayer and give us the perseverance to be a voice for life and human dignity in our community. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Our Lady of Prompt Succor, hasten to help us. Mother Henriette Delille, pray for us that we may be a holy family. Amen. St. Catherine of Siena Parish Prayer God, Our Father, we thank you for our parish community of St. Catherine of Siena. Thank you for the many blessings that you have given us, but especially for calling us to serve as disciples of your son, Jesus Christ. As we gather today, we ask that you send your Holy Spirit to guide us in everything that we do. Transform our hearts and lead us closer to you. Help us always to seek to be a parish that is Centered on Christ and Ablaze with Love. We ask all of these things in the name of Jesus, and through the intercession of our Blessed Mother. St. Catherine of Siena, pray for us! St. Michael the Archangel Prayer St. Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle. Be our protection against the wickedness and snares of the devil. May God rebuke him, we humbly pray; and do thou, O Prince of the Heavenly Host, by the power of God, cast into hell Satan and all evil spirits who prowl about the world seeking the ruin of souls. Amen.

Christian Marriage and Law by Fr. Garrett O’Brien, JCL Last time I addressed a few of the scriptural foundations of Christian marriage. Truly, the sacrament of marriage stands as a living sign of the unfailing love of God. It is inconceivable that God would end His love for His Church! And so, since Christian marriage is a sign of His unending love, how can the Church have the annulment process which appears to end marriages? Here’s the essential distinction between the annulment process and the process of civil divorce. A civil divorce is based on the will of the parties to end their union and it has no effect on the sacra-ment of marriage. In contrast, an annulment examines the very begin-ning of a marriage and seeks to determine whether a marriage ever existed in the first place. If no sacramental marriage existed, then the bond can be declared null and (in most cases) the parties are free to marry in the Church. To recap: a divorce is based on the will of the parties and has no spiritual impact; an annulment determines whether a sacramental marriage ever existed in the first place. How does the annulment process determine whether a marriage was invalid from the start? There are two steps: the theory of marriage (our system of law based on theology) and practice (the procedural method of judging invalidity). Below I’ll try to explain the theory and then I’ll discuss the practice next time. To summarize the theory of how marital consent can be invalid, we must return to scriptural roots. Christ estab-lished marriage as a spiritual good that brings supernatural grace. Yet this spiritual good is exchanged between human, material creatures. Therefore, in marriage the natural and the supernatural comingle. Mar-riage is a spiritual covenant, and just like other covenants from the Old Testament, is it underpinned with a system of laws. Said another way, the reason we can be sure that a spiritual covenant comes about is by determining whether the essential laws of that covenant have been met. As a result, over the centuries, our Catholic ancestors have slowly discerned and compiled the laws that are within God’s plan for sacra-mental marriage. When certain laws are unfulfilled, no marriage re-sults. This means that when the couple exchanged their consent (or vows) no sacrament came about. Where did our marriage laws come from? Laws regarding marriage come from both divine and human sources. One example of a divine law is that God wills marriage to be an indissoluble bond until death. If a per-son approaches the wedding day thinking that he or she can end the sacrament at any time, then clearly, that person is not consenting to marriage, and no sacrament results. This is just one of many divine laws and the Church has no power to change these. At the same time, some questions through history have not been answered by God’s revelation. As a result, the Church needed to establish human laws in addition. For these, the Church has relied on the guidance of the Holy Spirit and the “Power of the Keys” (Mt 16:19) to make decisions on unclear matters. For example, one Church law about marriage is the “form” of marriage. For centuries, there was no requirement for Catholics to exchange vows before any witnesses at all. Imagine the headaches: some individuals claimed to be married while their alleged spouse denied ever having exchanged vows! To resolve this source of uncertainty, in 1563, the Church established that a Catholic must exchange consent before two witnesses in addition to an official witness who has jurisdiction from Church authority. Even though I’m glossing over some details, you can see how this human/Church law is necessary. If a Catholic does not follow this “form,” a sacramental marriage does not take place. While I cannot summarize centuries worth of legal and theological de-velopment in a brief article, my hope is simply to give you a sense that the sacrament of marriage is something both natural and supernatural, meaning, it involves grace and it involves laws. When certain laws are ignored, the sacrament does not come about. Next time I’ll dive a little deeper into the process by which the Church uses her laws to judge a marriage for invalidity. Anyone interested in hearing more is welcome to call me at the parish office, or join me on Tuesday, May 14, 7-9 pm, in the Melancon Center.

Two-Minute Testimony: Jay Quinlan

When Fr. Tim asked me to con-sider submitting my testimony to the parish, I have to admit, I was hesitant. While born and raised Catholic, my commitment to God and my faith through the years have not been impeccable. As an example, I am certainly not in line for a perfect attendance ribbon for attending Mass. Given my admittedly flawed commit-ment to my Catholic faith, I worried that any testimony I gave would come across hypo-critically. I sense there are so many St. Catherine of Siena pa-rishioners with more dedication to their faith than I. Nonethe-less, his request caused me to reflect considerably upon my faith and my relationship with God and led me to submit this. As you may or may not know, in the summer of 2016, I was diag-nosed with amyotrophic lateral

sclerosis, or ALS. I won’t belabor this submission with details of my symptom progression. Suffice it to say, over time, I will likely lose mus-cle function in most, if not all of my body. That’s the Bad News. Now the Good News and where I find God’s hand at work. It’s from all of you, the Catholic community I am so fortunate to belong to. It starts with my wonderful wife of 23 years, Stephanie. Despite her periodic threat to roll me out in my wheelchair in a rainstorm and leave me there, she has been unbelievable in her support of me since my diagnosis and I shudder to think where I’d be without her. No one can ever appre-ciate all she does for me and our two children, especially as I have be-come more physically limited. In many ways, our house has become a single parent household with an extra dependent to be accommodated for daily. My children and I are so lucky to have such a dynamic wife and mother! My diagnosis came just as my daughter started college and my son start-ed high school. Despite some predictable rough patches for all of us adjusting to the news of my diagnosis, both are doing great, excelling in school and maintaining active extracurricular and social lives. Further, I couldn’t ask for more help and encouragement than I get from my moth-er, mother-in-law, sisters, brother, and their families. I have had the great fortune to attend Jesuit High School and have my two children attend St. Catherine of Siena. When my diagnosis was first made public, we were inundated by calls, texts, and visits from so many of you. That outpouring of support went a long way to boosting our fami-ly morale and helped build our confidence that we could fight this dis-

ease going forward. The friendships we have made and the sacrifices those friends have offered and made for me and my family have truly been overwhelming. Since my diagnosis, I have been moved to tears many times by offers from friends from Jesuit and St. Catherine that have included:

• an offer to trade homes so my handicap could be better accommodated; • gift of a vehicle for my son, a new driver; • innumerable instances of assistance from TeamGleason; • assistance by Jesuit graduates as far away as Tokyo, Japan to assist

me in getting beneficial medications not then available in the U.S.; and

• untold offers of monetary, fundraising, medical, logistical, and spiritual assistance from a multitude of people.

The above are just a few of so many offers we have received over the two and a half years since my diagnosis. I believe the following email message I received shortly after my diagnosis from one of my high school classmates succinctly represents the type of responses I have received from so many: This is a journey on which your '86 brothers will accompany you every step of the way. We all ask only two things: 1. What do you need? 2. When do you need it? Given this snapshot that is repre-sentative of the responses I have received over these many months, how can God’s hand not be working through this commu-nity I am so grateful to be a part of? So, when I reflect on where I feel God’s presence in my life, thank-fully my answer is, it’s in you, my Catholic community. Ever gratefully yours, Jay Quinlan AMDG

Email [email protected] or call 460-0318.

Archdiocesan News Isaiah 43 Peace Prayer Walk: April 30 In collaboration with the Archdiocese of New Orleans’ Office of Racial Harmony and the Office of Justice & Peace, Isaiah 43 hosts monthly peace prayer walks. The walks are held in neighborhoods throughout New Orleans in response to community members seeking opportunities to be active in promoting peace, forgiveness, and love in all neighbor-hoods. The April peace prayer walk will take place on Tuesday, April 30, starting at 6 pm at St. Martha, 2555 Apollo Drive in Harvey. The May walk is scheduled for Tuesday, May 28, starting at 6 pm at Ascen-sion of Our Lord in LaPlace. Gardening as a Spiritual Practice: May 1 “Like a Watered Garden: Gardening as a Spiritual Practice,” a preached silent retreat facilitated by Sr. Gretchen Dysart, MSC, is scheduled for Wednesday, May 1, at the Archdiocese of New Orleans Retreat Center, 5500 St. Mary Street, Metairie. Through Scripture, poetry, song and reflection, we will walk the garden path to deeper relationship with God. How does God turn the soil of your soul and plant seeds of self-knowledge and enlightenment? How do the moments of gardening—digging, sowing, weeding, transplanting, weeding(!), relishing the fruits of labor—call you into surprising kinship with the Earth and her creatures? The cost for the day is $35. Call 887-1420 or visit retreats.arch-no.org for more information or to register. Willwoods Married Couples Retreat: May 4-5 Married couples are invited to take some quality time enriching their marriage, May 4-5, at the newly renovated St. Joseph Abbey Christian Life Center in Covington. To register call Jason Angelette at 830-3716 or visit FaithandMar-riage.org. A suggested donation of $275 is requested but not required because cost should never be a reason for a couple not to be able to make a weekend. Retreat on Omnipresent Holiness: May 17-19 Pope Francis’ document, Gaudete et Exsultate (March 19, 2018), re-minds us that holiness is in the immediate circumstances of our life; in fact, it might be “right next door.” A May 17-19 weekend retreat for women will mine—dig out—the nuggets of the Pope’s insights and help us to realize that God is to be found in all things. The weekend will be offered at the Archdiocese of New Orleans Retreat Center, 5500 St. Mary Street, Metairie. Visit retreats.arch-no.org or call 887-1420 for more information or to register. This is an invitation to come away for awhile and deepen your relationship with God. Each retreatant meets daily with a trained spiritual director, is given Scripture to pray with, and spends the rest of the day in silence, prayer, and rest. Through Scripture and reflection under the daily guidance of the spiritu-al director, the retreatant grows in awareness of God’s presence and action in her life. Retreat accommodations include a private room and meals. Register at asc.arch-no.org or call 861-3254. Pope Francis’ April Prayer Intention The Holy Father’s April prayer intention is for doctors and their collabo-rators in war-torn areas, who risk their lives to save the lives of others. To view a 56-second video about this topic, visit thepopevideo.org. The Pope Video is an initiative of the Pope’s Worldwide Prayer Network (Apostleship of Prayer), which addresses the challenges facing humanity and assists the mission of the Church. Those involved with the Apostleship walk a spiritual path called the “Way of the Heart.”

Prayer for Caregivers Healer of souls and comforter of the weary, help to lighten the burden of families who are caring for their sick loved ones. Accompany them on their journey and ease their anxiety and fears. Surround them with the love and strength of others, so they may experience the healing pres-ence of the communion of saints. We ask this through the intercession of Our Lady of Lourdes and in the name of our Son, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit, now and forever. Amen.
