GUIDELINES FOR DRIVE THRU COMMUNION

In this time of limited access to the Sacraments due to COVID 19, many of us have gone without reception of Holy Communion for several weeks. After consideration, the public health guidelines and the safety of our local community, St. Catherine of Siena, will offer the drive-in reception of Holy Communion on Sunday, May 10th through May 31st. The distribution will take place from 12:15 pm,- 1:00 pm, following the 11 am Sunday Mass. The success of this initiative depends on the care and attention of everyone involved. The following is our official guide for drive-in communion procedures. Please be sure to read these guidelines and familiarize yourself with our process to make your reception of Holy Communion speedy, simple, and safe for all who seek the Lord’s presence in the Most Holy Sacrament.

BEFORE COMING TO THE CHURCH If you are elderly, ill, at risk of illness, or afraid of becoming sick, PLEASE do not feel compelled to

come. The obligation to attend Sunday Mass and receive Holy Communion in the Easter Season is still dispensed for all Catholics in the Diocese of Oakland. Receiving Holy Communion at this time is strictly voluntary.

Ensure that all persons intending to receive the Eucharist are wearing face masks.

AT THE CHURCH

1. Pull up in front of the church; the line will begin there 2. Father Anthony and the Deacons will approach the first three cars. When those cars have been served, the other vehicles will be directed forward. 3. Father Anthony or the Deacons will raise a consecrated Host and say, “Behold, the Lamb of God, behold Him who takes away the sin of the world. Blessed are those called to the supper of the Lord.” 4. You will respond with, “Lord, I am not worthy to receive you, but only say the word, and my soul will be healed.” 5. Father or the Deacon will administer Holy Communion, saying, “The Body of Christ.” The response is “Amen.” 6. Reverently receive the Eucharist in your hand and wait for them to walk back before lowering your mask and consuming the Eucharist. 7. Father Anthony or the Deacon will then give you and your family a blessing. After the blessing, please drive home safely.

Confessions are currently being conducted by appointment only. Please call the office and leave your message on Ext 6 if you wish to schedule an appointment .

The Mother of God devoted her whole life to our Lord. From the very start, all of her thoughts and desires have been centered on Him. She is constantly in His pres-ence and wants us to share her love and dedication for her Son, who is Life itself. As our mother, she wants the same for us and helps us each day to grow closer to Him. Mary teaches us about inner silence The Mother of God reveals to us the mystery of inner silence without which prayer is impossible. It’s hard for us to maintain, because we are constantly distracted by petty considerations. But she is silent and humble, bound to God alone and committed to fulfilling His will. The Mother of God makes us realize that this silence is a fruit of selfless acceptance, destined to bring peace into our hearts and minds. All we have to do is aban-don ourselves and, like little children, place all of our trust in the Lord. Mary intercedes on our behalf As we recite our rosaries we constantly repeat: “Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners.” This humble prayer makes us ardently desire salvation and gradually opens our hearts to the light of the Holy Spirit. The Virgin Mary also teaches us how to abandon ourselves to God’s mercy. She had her heart broken as she watched her Son die on the Cross. But she was also the first mortal to be born without Original Sin, which is the greatest kind of forgiveness. Mary is our shield God’s love is too overwhelming and too hard for us to bear, unless we become humble like Mary. God mani-fested his great love for us when He died for our sins and it is there that He introduced us to his mother so that through her we can become like little children and penetrate the Trinitarian mystery. Mary turns us to Jesus When we pray to Mary, saints, and angels, our prayer is addressed to God alone. When we teach our children how to pray, let us avoid putting Mary and Jesus on the same level. Mary keeps nothing for herself; she con-stantly turns us to her Son. The more our life becomes focused on prayer, the more we feel the need to rely on the Virgin Mary’s interces-sion. The burning love of the Trinity drives us into her embrace, which is the refuge for all of her children. By Christine Ponsard (Aleteia)

WORDS OF ST. VINCENT THAT TELL US WHO WE ARE “I will always welcome joyfully any opportunity that comes my way to be of service to you. St. Vincent V.4, Letter 1231 Joyfully. We are joyful. When that call comes to meet the needs of the poor at an inconvenient time – we are at dinner ourselves, the football game is in the 4th quarter, we took the last two calls, where is everyone else? We all know that sometimes, we’d just rather stay home. But we also know that the joy comes when we actually meet our brother or sister who places such hope and trust in us to help them. Joy has nothing to do with balloons and grins. Joy has to do with our awareness that God lives deep down inside us. This is the God who said, “I have come that my joy many be in you and your joy may be complete.” John 15:11. It is in that joy that that we will welcome joyfully any opportunity to serve our sisters and brothers living in poverty. Pope Francis tells us in his encyclical the “Joy of the Gospel” that without God’s Spirit leading us, we risk becoming “sourpusses.” paragraph 85, He urges us to live in the joy of the Gospel and to share that Gospel with everyone we meet. Sister Rosalie Rendu became a mentor to the founding members of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul. She taught them how to make home visits and met with them after those visits. During one of those visits, she said to them, “Love the poor. Remember that the poor are more sensitive to your behavior than to what you bring them.” Jesus calls us in Luke’s Gospel to bring “Good News to the Poor.” No matter what we take to the Poor or can’t take, we can take the Good News of joy. What does this mean for us and our service? Peace and Grace. Sister Paule Freeburg, DC Western Region Spiritual Advisor

Dear Families in Christ, In the First Reading, (Acts 1: 12-14) The Ascen-sion of Jesus into heaven, should have been the sad-dest goodbye in history. Imagine ourselves, after 3 years of fond memories with Jesus here at St. Cathe-rine, our words would never be sufficient to describe the sadness of what we would feel and see about His leaving us. We saw Him walk on water, feed thou-sands of people with a few barley loaves of bread and a pair of dried fish. We watched in stunned amaze-ment as Jesus made the lame walk, the blind see, the deaf hear, raised Lazarus from the dead all by His mere command. We have even lost Him to death and sees Him come back again, risen and glorified—the same Jesus we had always known. In the Gospel Reading, Jesus praying to the Father, is about to ascend into Heaven. He is leaving us again—and this time, it’s for good. Considering the three memorable years of warm friendships the Apos-tles shared, and considering who was departing from them – from US, shouldn’t this preeminent personal emotional drama have felt devastating? But the Gospels of (1 Peter 4: 13-16), and (Luke 24 :52) say just the opposite. The Apostles together with Mary, Mother of Jesus, returned to Jerusalem with great joy! They rejoice exultantly! To understand the cause of great Joy here is to comprehend what the Ascension of Jesus means for us—and here at St. Catherine’s Parish. Jesus Christ, the Son of God is God Himself who walked on this earth. But when He walked this earth, Jesus deliberately limited Himself. How and why? If Jesus was present in one location, He was NOT at the same time present in another place. If Jesus was speaking to one person, He was NOT at the same time speaking to another. He told His Apostles, “If you loved me, you would rejoice that I am going back to the Father,” (John 17: 1-11). “Father, the hour has come.” “And now I will no longer be in the World, but they are in the World, while I am coming to you.” Jesus told His Apostles, (John 14: 28) “It is better for you that I go, because if I do not go, the Holy spirit will not come to you.” (John 16: 7). By the power of the Holy Spirit who we celebrate next week at Pentecost, Jesus will be present not just on a sin-gle place, but everywhere. Not just to one person but to everyone—all of us. Jesus will be more present than ever before. As Catholics, we do know where to find Him. If we ask our own Priest, Beloved Disciple Father An-thony Le, he will always know and will show us—every time! Since the Lord is no longer visible among us, everything of Him that was visible has passed into the Holy Sacraments. The Ascension of the Lord Jesus is just the beginning. That’s why the Apostles walked away rejoic-ing. That same joy is still found among everyone who shares the faith they professed. In the end, all shall be well; Jesus has gone ahead of us in the Ascension NOT to leave us, but to be closer than ever before. Like our Priest Father Anthony Le, Jesus is with us, in this time and will lead us home to the place in eter-nity, where there will be NO more goodbyes. Let us pray to deepen our faith in Jesus presence in the Ho-ly Sacrament. In Him and only in Him—All will be well. Amen. May God bless you all, C.C. Salonga

SAINT PHILIP NERI (1515-1595) May 26 In a shop near the Vatican, a group of Americans laughed as the shopkeeper showed off his fluent English and latest souvenir, a key ring whose papal portrait, when pressed, activated a recorded blessing. Through the shop window, two clerics scowled disapprov-al. The shopkeeper grunted, “They’re a very somber order who’ve left the Church. I rec-ognize them.” “By their long robes?” an American asked. “Many in Rome wear robes,” replied the shopkeeper. “It’s their long faces!” When Philip Neri arrived in sixteenth-century Rome, there was reason to be somber. Swiss Guards had been massacred on Saint Peter’s steps defending the pope. Parts of Europe were abandoning the Church. But Philip resolved to be an “apostle of joy,” drawing especially the young to Christ—and frequent confession and Communion—by his sincere interest in their problems, prayerful example, and gentle humor. His “Oratory,” a movement as well as a place, provided recreation and devotion in a joyful atmosphere of companionship, service, and liturgy. Philip Neri challenges each of us to begin improving Church and world by changing ourselves with unfailing joy. —Peter Scagnelli, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

Sunday, May 24, 2020 SEVENTH SUNDAY OF EASTER

Right where you belong We each have a need to belong that doesn’t start with the playground or end with the work shi . Psychologist Abraham Maslow categorized the need to belong as number three on a hierarchy of essen als: right behind physical needs (food, clothing, and shelter) and safety. Catalog the people who are essen al to your happiness and the social groups that include you as a member. Then consider this: God has chosen you to be one of God's people. And Jesus counts you as one who be-longs especially to him. TODAY'S READINGS: Acts 1:12-14; 1 Peter 4:13-16; John 17:1-11a (59). “They belonged to you, and you gave them to me.” Monday, May 25, 2020 MEMORIAL OF GREGORY VII, POPE

Cherish your freedoms Pope Gregory VII fought hard for the separa on of church and state because he lived in a me (11th century) when the church was subject to civil authori es, and abuses of power were rampant. In the face of enormous opposi on, this great reformer extricated the church from the control of external rulers and strengthened the unity of the whole church under the centrality of the papacy. On this Memorial Day, remember that religious freedom is one of the founding principles of our country, worthy of the sacrifice of many. And one that our faith demands that we respect for all. TODAY'S READINGS: Acts 19:1-8; John 16:29-33 (297). “In the world you will have trouble, but take courage, I have conquered the world.” Tuesday, May 26, 2020 MEMORIAL OF PHILIP NERI, PRIEST

God provides It’s fi ng Philip Neri was canonized in 1622 with Igna us of Loyola, Francis Xavier, and Teresa of Ávila. Igna us was a friend, Francis was an influence, and Philip took to heart Tere-sa’s quip: “From . . . sour-faced saints, good Lord, deliver us!” The affable Philip won over so many different kinds of people for Christ in 1500s Rome—using humor, humbleness, and holi-ness— that he’s called, with Peter and Paul, an apostle of Rome. “Cast yourself into the arms of God,” he said, “and be very sure that if he wants anything of you, he will fit you for the work and give you strength.” That is comfor ng at a me when many of us feel stretched to the limit. TODAY'S READINGS: Acts 20:17-27; John 17:1-11a (298). “I revealed your name to those whom you gave me.” Wednesday, May 27, 2020 MEMORIAL OF AUGUSTINE OF CANTERBURY, BISHOP

Look for God in unexpected places Lest Saint Augus ne of Canterbury be confused with Saint Augus ne of Hippo: the two are not the same. Augus ne of Hippo was a fourth-century doctor of the church. Augus ne of Canterbury was a sixth-century Benedic ne missionary sent by Pope Gregory the Great to Chris anize the Bri sh Isles. He is known as the "Apostle to the English," and his legacy includes an approach to evangeliza on and conversion that shows a respect for in-digenous prac ces. Rather than condemning, he consecrated

and incorporated popular Anglo-Saxon rites into Chris anity. What prac ces from popular culture today might we conse-crate into contemporary Chris an prac ce? TODAY'S READINGS: Acts 20:28-38; John 17:11b-19 (299). “As you sent me into the world, so I sent them into the world.” Thursday, May 28, 2020 EASTER WEEKDAY

Celebrate our finest gi s Shavuot, or the Feast of Weeks, which our Jewish friends ob-serve today, has a connec on to the Catholic Solemnity of Pentecost. Just as Pentecost this Sunday comes seven weeks a er Easter, Shavuot is celebrated seven weeks a er Passover. In the biblical era, important dates for plan ng and harves ng were marked by religious holidays. Shavuot celebrated the wheat harvest seven weeks a er Passover. Chris ans thank God for the abundant gi of the Holy Spirit. TODAY'S READINGS: Acts 22:30; 23:6-11; John 17:20-26 (300). “I pray not only for them, but also for those who will believe in me through their word.” Friday, May 29, 2020 EASTER WEEKDAY

Keeping the peace In 1972, Pope Saint Paul VI declared, “If you want peace, work for jus ce.” Today we observe the Interna onal Day of United Na ons Peacekeepers. The U.N. deploys peacekeepers around the world to provide "a unique and dynamic instrument . . . to help countries torn by conflict to create the condi ons for las ng peace.” The work of Catholic social jus ce organiza ons like Catholic Relief Services, Catholic Worker, and Cross Catho-lic Outreach go a step further by “tending the sheep” of the poor, the oppressed, the refugee, the dispossessed. Do your part today to support the social outreach of your church. TODAY'S READINGS: Acts 25:13b-21; John 21:15-19 (301). “Tend my sheep.” Saturday, May 30, 2020 EASTER WEEKDAY

Just do it! Some argue that “believing the right things” is enough of a response to the call to discipleship. But Jesus emphasized do-ing. Orthopraxy (right prac ce) goes hand in hand with ortho-doxy (right belief). In this me of global suffering, our faith response is required. It flows out of our faith assent, but we can’t stop with professions of faith. Take your faith out to meet the great need you find around you today. TODAY'S READ-INGS: Acts 28:16-20, 30-31; John 21: 20-25 (302). “There are also many other things that Jesus did, but if these were to be described individu-ally, I do not think the whole world would contain the books that would be wri en.”
