Gaudete Sunday and the Nearness of the Solemnity of Christmas – With this rose-colored vestments Sunday, Holy Mother Church takes the purple of Advent and mixes it with the white of Christmas to make rose, signifying the nearness of Christmas, now in just over a week’s time. As I have heard that there is some confusion, next Sunday will be the Fourth Sunday of Advent, directly followed by the vigil Masses for Christmas on Sunday afternoon. As both this Fourth Sunday and Christmas are days of obligation, prayer of the Masses for both days are necessary. So, plan your schedules accordingly, and if it is best for your schedule and that of your family, remember that if you are well disposed for the sacrament, you may receive Holy
Communion twice in one day. Thus, you may attend Mass on Sunday morning for the Fourth Sunday of Advent and then again on Sunday afternoon or evening for one of the vigil Masses for Christmas and receive Holy Communion at both. A blessed final full weekend of Advent to you and be assured of my continued prayers, especially for safe travels. New Parish Initiatives – With the beginning of a new liturgical year for the Church throughout the world and with it, we are also beginning some new parish initiatives for evangelization. Please see the bulletin inserts in this week’s edition further detailing two such initiatives, in follow-up to this column last weekend: a new Saint Catherine of Siena Parish App for your phone and other media devices and also the new availability of FORMED in our parish, a great resource from the Saint Augustine Institute, a center for Catholic studies in Denver that has its origin with the initiatives of that local Archdiocese. The FORMED resource serves as a clearing house for many practical series on Catholic life, easily accessible for any pc or mobile device. Open to all registered Saint Catherine parishioners, all that is required is to enter access code noted in the text of the bulletin insert. Kindly see these inserts for a listing of programming, a well as the access code information. Additionally, kindly note the installation of a new monitor in the Narthex for the rotating display of upcoming events and needed parish information. My great gratitude to the generosity of a parish family for this great new resource for our community. Advent Celebration of the Sacrament of Reconciliation – Kindly find published in this bulletin, the schedule for the communal celebration of the Sacrament of Reconciliation with individual confession for our parish and all those within the Raleigh Deanery. Note that our own parish communal celebrations of the
Sacrament of Reconciliation, with individual confession and
absolution are up-coming this week on Tuesday December 19th at 7 pm and Thursday, December 21st at 11 am. Priests from throughout the Raleigh Deanery will be joining us to assist in this celebration and reception of Our Lord’s redeeming mercy and grace. Plan to celebrate the sacrament to prepare well for our observance of Christmas at any of the listed liturgies or at our regularly offered confession schedule on Wednesday evening from 5-6 pm or on Saturdays from 3-5 pm or via appointment with Father Chesco, Father Magee or myself.
Bereavement Ministry Apostolate at Saint Catherine – Through the generosity and leadership of our parishioner Dorothy McEwan, this essential ministry will be restarting here at Saint Catherine to assist our parishioners in their mourning as they grieve a loved one who has died. Look for details in next weekend’s bulletin and kindly include this and all of our parish apostolates among your intentions. Memorial Garden Columbarium Project Weekly Update – Landscaping was added this weekend, as well as piping for irrigation and lighting. The concrete driveway and parking area is scheduled for pouring next week with completion of the overall construction is still anticipated by Christmas 2017. We are currently in the planning process for the dedication date, which will be scheduled for January 2018. Watch for further details. The walkway around the site for the Stations of the Cross will also be installed, as part of an Eagle Scout project, as will a large crucifix, also part of a separate Eagle Scout project. The crucifix will be placed in the center of the garden and will be up lit at night. As previous stated, following the beginning of construction and continued inquiries on niches in the Memorial Garden and subsequent purchases, note that with those in our community now choosing this option for burial, there are now only 13 niches available in this first phase of construction. For inquiries on purchasing a niche, kindly call or stop by the parish office for more information. Note that in our Catholic corporal works mercy, I have designated that 3 of these niches be set aside for those most in need, to assist those who have lost a loved one and cannot afford burial. Future Parish Facilities Consultation – My great continued gratitude to Ray Scherzer, who is chairing this committee, and to all the members of the committee: Carl Hren, Janel Grossheim, Kevin DeLillo, David Moyer and Carl Bilotta. My thanks as well to all of the leaders of each apostolate for their very helpful input as to all of our current and future needs. We are in process now of planning several January 2018 meetings to review our consultation results, as well as to receive input on how with these results we may take the next steps toward the design process for the facilities needed. Look for details up-coming. Please continue to keep the process among your intentions, as this pertains to how as a parish family we are fulfilling the mission of Christ entrusted to us in virtue of our baptism as Catholics. Know of my continued and daily remembrance of you among my prayers. May Mary, Mother of the Church and Saint Catherine of Siena watch over us and guide us, always!
ALL SOULS PICTURES If you dropped off a picture of a loved one to the All Souls table during the month of November, please come to the parish office to pick up your picture. We would like to ensure that everyone receives their pictures back.

ANOINTING OF THE SICK Anointing of the sick will be (provided/administered) the first Sunday of every month after the 8:00 AM Mass. Please sit in the pews in front of Our Blessed Lady's statue after Mass.
FETAL DEVELOPMENT OF THOMAS Tradition teaches us Christ was conceived on the Feast of the
Annunciation. We will watch the parallel development of “Thomas” in
the womb beginning on March 25 (Feast of the Annunciation) through
December 25.
December 17 (Week 39)
Thomas now weighs between 5 and 9 pounds. The average size of a baby is 7 pounds. It’s really crowded in here, and it’s very hard to move. The umbilical cord doesn’t have any nerve endings (this means that neither Mom nor Thomas will feel any pain when it is cut!), and it is about ½ inch thick. The good news for Mom is it’s easier to breathe because the baby is moving down. The bad news is Mom may be running to the bathroom every two minutes. “God [had] from my mother’s womb set me apart and called me through his grace…” (Galatians 1:15)

If you would like to add an intention, please call the parish office
at 919-570-0070 with the name and rank. “Realize that illness and other temporal setbacks often come to us
from the hand of God our Lord, and are sent to help us know
ourselves better, to free ourselves of the love of created things, and
to reflect on the brevity of this life and, thus, to prepare ourselves for
the life which is without end.” St. Ignatius of Loyola [Monumenta

Respondió: "No".
