MISSION STATEMENT: As part of the living Body of Christ, Saint Cecilia parish on Bainbridge Island seeks to conform to the will of God through faith, works, teaching and stewardship of God’s creation as guided by the Holy Spirit, by the teachings of Christ, and the Grace of the Father. We celebrate this mission daily in prayer, liturgy, sacraments and life.
Dear Parishioners, Baptism is the first of the seven sacraments. It initiates
the sharing of God’s life of grace within us. Through baptism we
are freed from sin (original sin only for infants; all personal sins
are included for those over the age of discretion). We are reborn as
children of God. His Holy Spirit is planted in us. We become
members of Christ and incorporated into the Church and made
sharers in her mission.
Water, basic to life and tool of cleansing, is the matter used in
baptism. The form consists of: I baptize you in the name of the
Father, and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Valid baptism
requires passing water over some portion of the head while the
words are said. The same person pours and speaks. The word
baptism comes from the Greek for plunge or immerse, and refers to
the idea of being under the water, as if buried in Christ’s death, so
as to rise with Christ by resurrection into a new life.
The typical minister of Baptism is a deacon or priest. However,
in danger of death anyone (even a non-Catholic) may baptize as
long as they have the intention of doing what the Church intends,
and they apply the correct matter and form. Baptisms are recorded
in the parish within whose territory the baptism occurred. The
sacrament imprints a spiritual mark, or indelible character, and can
be received only once. Baptisms in other Christian denominations
are considered valid by the Catholic Church, if the correct matter
and form were used.
The significance of the effects of baptism, with the rights and
responsibilities for the baptized, requires preparation so that the
person understands the commitment they are making and are
prepared to live their new life as Catholics. Adults and children
over seven years of age take instructions through the RCIA
program. Instructions begin in the fall to prepare for baptism (as
well as confirmation and communion) at Easter.
Yours in Christ,

MINISTRY SPOTLIGHT
Knights of Columbus: The KofC was formed to
render financial aid as well as
other assistance to members and
their families. According to the
KofC website, “social and
intellectual fellowship is promoted
among members and their families through
educational, charitable, religious, social welfare, war
relief and public relief works.”
John Dugan, a member of the KofC at St. Cecilia’s,
first joined the KofC in 1965 at a small parish in
Marietta, Ga. The pastor of that parish told John “it
was the most hands-on, active parish fraternity
dedicated to assisting the pastor in his service to the
family of parishioners through assistance at Mass and
as back up for other ministerial and parish functions.”
John says it was “that fulfilling experience that led
me to support the pastor of Sacred Heart parish in
Bellevue (in starting) the KofC there and
subsequently here at our own St. Cecilia’s.” He adds,
“Being a Knight is an honor and a privilege offered
to all men of the parish who are looking for a way to
serve the pastor in achieving his goals for his parish,
and to provide organized functions (to) serve those
objectives.”
The Knights have several levels or degrees of
responsibilities involving formal ceremonies and
dedications deemed proper by the parish, diocese,
and the Councils. In addition, the organization offers
each of its members an insurance menu intended to
supplement a Knight's family’s net worth at the time
of his passing, in gratitude for dedicated service to
the parish. If you are interested in joining this
fraternal organization, contact Anthony Farrell at
St. Cecilia Parish, Bainbridge Island, WA
