I introduced revelation and its written form of Sacred Scripture as corollary to belief in the personal God. For the next point in my doctrine outline, I would like to elaborate on the first part of the Bible which gives the first record of my next doctrinal points. Chapters one through twelve of the first book of the Bible, Genesis, are unique in terms of the Sacred Scriptures. Those few pages cover a period of time from the beginning of creation until the beginning of the Hebrew people around 2000 BC. Scholars may argue about how many thousands or millions of years are involved. That’s a lot to cover in twelve chapters. One can appreciate that the chapters present some basic foundational points about the nature of the human person in relationship to God. They also refer to events that are “pre-historical.” That does not mean the chapters do not communicate things that are historical but rather they refer to an era before written human history in the Middle East was a reality. These chapters first describe creation. The high point of earthly creation is the human person described in Genesis as being made by God in His image and likeness. Our religious tradition points to our reason and free will as the distinct human powers that separate us from plants and animals. Being made to “look” like God, we are supposed to use those powers in imitation of the personal, loving, Creator. We are to use our reason and free will for the good of others. The brief description of the state of those first human persons is a picture of life in a garden that is cared for by those first humans who are charged with bringing new life into the world. In a few passages we learn of the harmony between the human persons and God, their harmony with natur, and their harmony with one another. Adam rejoiced when God created another person with whom he could enjoy a unique and powerful union, a union which God described as the two becoming one. Yours in Christ,

PRINCIPAL’S CORNER

Two weeks ago, I attended Mass on Kelley’s Island in Ohio. The priest spoke about ABUNDANCE and WELCOME as he shared the Gospel message. Both words have stayed with me as I reflect on last school year and prepare for the year ahead.

Our lives are filled with ABUNDANCE. We see the amazing Mount Rainier as we ride the ferry. The view of the mountains we have while driving into Poulsbo is breathtaking. Our streets and highways all across the peninsula are tree-lined. Puget Sound, in all its abundance, surrounds us.

ABUNDANCE is ever present at SCCS. Energetic, joy-filled students fill the halls. Teachers continuously share their strengths and best practices with one another to meet the needs of all students. Parents model stewardship, every single day, as they share their time and talents.

WELCOME is an action verb. Each morning, I greet students as they walk in the door while teachers do the same in their classrooms. A student greeter in each classroom welcomes any newcomer, sharing the lesson/activity that is happening when the visitor arrives.

Opportunities to welcome others present themselves frequently throughout each day of our lives. As we WELCOME others, we share our ABUNDANCE.

With joy,

Susan Kilbane
