Dear Parishioners, I would like to present a few questions, and some answers, about the Sacred Scriptures that all Catholics should know and understand as another follow-up to my homily on the importance of our knowledge of Sacred Scripture, or the Bible. What are the two main divisions of the Scriptures and what are their fundamental differences? What is the approximate time frame each section was written? In which languages were the Scriptures originally written? What is another word for testament? What is meant by the canon of Scripture? Why are there books in the Roman Catholic and the Orthodox Scriptures that are not included in the Protestant and other Christian Scriptures? Who is responsible for the greatest number of books in the New Testament? What are the names of the books that focus on the words and deeds of Jesus? Catholics should recognize named books in the Bible and have a sense of which part of the Bible that book can be found. In addition, we should have a broad sense of the history that is described in the Sacred Scriptures. Certain names should be recognizable and readily identifiable as to their place on a “Bible time line.” Those names might include: Adam and Eve, Noah, Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Moses, Saul, David, Solomon, and the Maccabee brothers. It is important that we understand the meaning of the word “prophet” and that we have a general knowledge of the historical placement of the major, written prophets. Yours in Christ,

MISSION STATEMENT: As part of the living Body of Christ, Saint Cecilia parish on Bainbridge Island seeks to conform to the will of God through faith, works, teaching and stewardship of God’s creation as guided by the Holy Spirit, by the teachings of Christ, and the Grace of the Father. We celebrate this mission daily in prayer, liturgy, sacraments and life.

Dear Parishioners,

I would like to present a few questions, and some answers, about the Sacred Scriptures that all Catholics should know and understand as another follow-up to my homily on the importance of our knowledge of Sacred Scripture, or the Bible. • What are the two main divisions of the Scriptures and what are their fundamental differences? • What is the approximate time frame each section was written? • In which languages were the Scriptures originally written? • What is another word for testament? • What is meant by the canon of Scripture? • Why are there books in the Roman Catholic and the Orthodox Scriptures that are not included in the Protestant and other Christian Scriptures? • Who is responsible for the greatest number of books in the New Testament? • What are the names of the books that focus on the words and deeds of Jesus?

Catholics should recognize named books in the Bible and have a sense of which part of the Bible that book can be found. In addition, we should have a broad sense of the history that is described in the Sacred Scriptures. Certain names should be recognizable and readily identifiable as to their place on a “Bible time line.” Those names might include: Adam and Eve, Noah, Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Moses, Saul, David, Solomon, and the Maccabee brothers. It is important that we understand the meaning of the word “prophet” and that we have a general knowledge of the historical placement of the major, written prophets.

Summer can be a happy and relaxed time of the year and we celebrate that. In the spirit of good Stewardship, we ask you to remember your parish during every season of the year. There are several ways to keep your donations up-to-date while away on vacation. If you give through weekly envelopes, please bring your donation for the appropriate weekends to the parish office before leaving. If you would like to sign up for online donations, you can do that through our website at www.saintcparish.org . If you are already an online giver, nothing else is required. You have already taken care of your promise. We are grateful to all of our parishioners for living Stewardship as a Way of Life.
