Stewardship by the Book

Seventeenth Sunday in Ordinary Time July 25/26, 2020

A profound stewardship prayer is offered by the young King Solomon in today’s first reading. He asks the Lord to give him

an understanding heart, compassion towards God’s people and the insight to distinguish right from wrong. An under-

standing heart, or wisdom, is a gift from God. It is a gift that enables us to make good decisions and prudent choices. Cul-tivating and sharing this gift is essential, especially when poor

decisions and lack of compassion have consequences that affect the lives of others. During these disquieting times, are

we asking God for an understanding heart? Are we exercising good stewardship over the gift of wisdom? Are we sharing our

compassionate hearts with others?

Would you pray for a priest each day this week?

says the Psalmist today. Does the amount of my offering suggest that I could honestly say the

same?

Bulletin Article by Seminarian Elliot Zak

From ancient times in the Church, members of the faithful would make pilgrimages, usually by foot or on horseback, where they would travel to a particular shrine or holy place. Such a journey was usually one of prayer and penance taken either to ask a particular grace from God or to pray in thanksgiving for graces received from His Fatherly hands. Some of the main pilgrimage sites currently in the life of the Church include Jerusalem, Rome, Santiago de Compostella (the tomb of St. James the Greater), Marian shrines such as Fátima and Lourdes, and a multitude of other shrines to Our Lord, Our Lady, and to the angels and saints.

Here in the United States, we are not without places of pilgrimage! In Champion, Wisconsin there is a shrine to Our Lady of Good Hope which commemorates the only place in the United States that the Church has approved a Marian apparition. Al-so in Wisconsin, this time in La Crosse, there is a shrine dedicated to Our Lady of Guadalupe that is well worth the trip. Just 70 miles north of Oxford, there is a place called the Shrine of Christ’s Passion in St. John, Indiana. Each of those places of-fer us a place to visit to foster a deeper love for Jesus and Mary. “Pilgrimages evoke our earthly journey toward heaven and are traditionally very special occasions for renewal in pray-er” (Catechism of the Catholic Church, 1674). One of the great things about pilgrimages is they remind us that this world is not our home. Just as the Isr aelites of old wandered in search of the Promised Land, guided by the Lord, nour ished by the Manna from Heaven and the water from the rock which Moses struck with his staff, so too we are on a pilgrimage home to the ultimate Promised Land of our Heavenly homeland. “But our citizenship is in heaven, and from it we also await a Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ. He will change our lowly body to conform with his glorified body by the power that enables him also to bring all things into subjection to himself” (Phil 3:20). Just as the Lord nourished the Israelites, so too He nourishes us. But His nourishment to us now is the reality of which the nourishment of the Israelites was only the shadow! Our thirst for God is quenched by the living water welling up within us which is His very Holy Spirit. We are fed by the true Bread from Heaven, the Flesh and Blood of Jesus Christ in the Holy Eucharist.

It is the Holy Eucharist which is Christ’s own promise of glory with Him. “Participation in the Holy Sacrifice identifies us with his Heart, sustains our strength along the pilgrimage of this life, makes us long for eternal life, and unites us even now to the Church in heaven, the Blessed Virgin Mary, and all the saints” (Catechism of the Catholic Church, 1419). And our participation in the Mass and lived relationship with Christ in prayer also unites us in a deep and beautiful way to the other living members of the Mystical Body of Christ. This fills me with hope and consolation as some of us move from St. Patrick and St. Charles. We are always deeply united in the Heart of Christ through prayer and the Holy Eucharist. And ultimately, times of departure remind us of the same thing that a pilgrimage reminds us: that this world is not our home, that the fulfillment of the deepest desires of the human heart lie in heaven, in union with God the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. “So then you are no longer strangers and sojourners, but you are fellow citizens with the holy ones and members of the household of God, built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, with Christ Jesus himself as the cap-stone” (Eph 2:19-20). To heaven we set our sights, then! Regardless of how many times we meet again in this life, let’s cling to Christ so that we are sure to meet again in our Heavenly homeland. In the Sacred Heart of Jesus, Elliot Zak Support the Solidarity Fund for the Church in Africa Next week, our parishes will have a collection for the Solidarity Fund for the Church in Africa. Although the Church in Af-rica is growing, many still lack access to basic resources and pastoral care. Many suffer due to high rates of poverty and unemployment, illiteracy, and poor education. The Solidarity Fund supports pastoral projects that foster lasting peace and reconciliation in a continent often marked by division and tension. To learn more, visit www.usccb.org/africa. Farewell Party All are invited to an outdoor Farewell Party for Father Haan and the three Seminarians, Matt, Elliot and Jason on Friday, August 7 from 5 - 8 PM at St. Patrick’s on the lawn. Bring your lawn chair and come enjoy some ice cream while you say your goodbyes. For those who do not feel comforta-ble in a crowd, we invite you to say your goodbyes using the drive-thru receiving line from 4 - 5 PM.
