NEWSLETTER 30/2017 22 SEPTEMBER 2017

Dear Parents & Friends of St Clare’s

This week’s Year 12 Assembly and Graduation Mass provided many laughs and sighs of

nostalgia as our departing senior students reminisced over their past six years at St Clare’s and

the legacy they leave the school. A feature of the Graduation Mass was the 2017 Senior

Leaders ‘badging’ of the incoming group of leaders; a symbolic handing over of position and

responsibility. Our departing school leaders Michael O’Dwyer, Sarah Ward, Sean Page and

Hannah Lewis have made a significant contribution to the culture of the school. They have

been challenged by aspects of their leadership roles, grown in awareness of the importance of

collaborative, ethical decision-making and have enjoyed the opportunity to lead in front of their

peers. Importantly they acknowledge that their experience at St Clare’s has prepared them to

accept the further challenges that life and leadership will throw their way in the years to come.

On behalf of the school community I thank the leadership group for their work and leadership

in our student community.

Clare Sephton, Chelsea Green, Hannah Dormor, Rhys Hood, Macabe Grass, RubyMcIntosh, Jennifer Wesley,

On Monday, 18 September, Year 6 students from St Joseph’s Taree, St Joseph’s Gloucester, St

Joseph’s Bulahdelah, St Joseph’s Wingham and Holy Name Forster gathered at St Clare’s High

School Taree for the Manning Regional Leadership Day Conference.

The theme for this year’s conference was ‘Women in Leadership’. The day was an opportunity

for students to listen to wonderful and inspirational speakers, be motivated to change the world

and interact with other students from the region.

Throughout the afternoon, the students participated in workshops that focused on spirituality,

youth, community and creative leadership. These were led by Father Greg Barker from the

Forster Tuncurry Parish, the female members of the St Clare’s Student Representative Council

Willow Mackay, Chantelle Bell, Ruby Jones, Sarah Ward and Hannah Lewis, Deb Tuckerman

from Mid Coast Council and Bec Willis from St Joseph’s Gloucester.

The day was a great success, with all the activities aimed at building team skills, confidence,

facing challenges, decision-making and self-esteem. These activities provided the Year 6

students with an insight into the qualities that make people successful leaders and the need to

have good leaders in the community.

The arts play an important part in our lives and the development of our understanding of

ourselves and others. On Thursday night I was delighted to be invited to the annual JAFA

performance evening. It was great fun to watch each grade present a performance item that

engaged the audience and taught each of the young performers about collaboration and

resilience, life skills that will serve them well into the future.

We are pleased to announce that Karen Grant will be the Year 9 Student

Coordinator for Term 4 2017.

I wish everyone a happy and safe holiday and look forward to seeing everyone

back for Term 4.

God Bless

Principal

FROM THE SENIOR SCHOOL:

Well done Year 12. You have made it the end of 13 years of school and are about to embark on

the next stage of your lives. Woohoo!

Please keep an eye on your emails, there will still be plenty forthcoming with information that

you may need.

I don’t want to say too much so there are plenty of photos of this last week which will do the

talking for me. As I said in my speech on Thursday at your assembly:

“The secret of change is to focus all of your energy, not on fighting the old but on

building the new” – Socrates.

We are only a phone call or an email away, so if you need help with any school matters then

don’t hesitate to contact your teachers or myself.

Study hard, get plenty of sleep, eat well and get some exercise.

Good luck

Karen McCann, Year 12 Student Coordinator

CAREERS CORNER: For the St Clare’s High School Class of ‘17, school lessons are over.

Today saw Year 12 students, their parents, their teachers and

their whole school community celebrate, what is for most, 13

years of Catholic School education with a Mass in the School

Hall led by Fr George and Fr Greg. A truly appropriate way to

acknowledge this significant rite of passage.

The end of lessons does not mean the end of school academic

work nor the end of careers work.

Year 12ers, you should have achieved the following by NOW

UAC application completed – on-time entries due by next Friday, 29 September 2017

SRS completed - entries due by next Friday, 29 September 2017

Interstate applications completed e.g. QTAC/VTAC/SATAC

Early Direct Entry to UNE completed - entries due by next Friday, 29 September 2017

STAR application completed – already CLOSED

Other early entries finalised

TAFE application inquires made

Scholarship applications submitted

EAS completed and returned to school

Equity Scholarship completed

Having completed these, you can NOW enjoy the first days of your post-school life

Be safe and look after your classmates

What to do NEXT?

Prepare for HSC Examinations - Study, Study, Study

There will be 2 Round offers each month from September 2017 until April 2018 – offers

prior to 21 December 2017 USUALLY apply to those who have made alternative entry

applications, including early entries, SRS and EAS… so keep an eye out.

If you receive a STAR early offer from Southern Cross University, you will be informed

that, if you want the offer, accept it but do not enrol unless the course is really what you

want and you are happy to go to Southern Cross University.

UNE Direct Early Entry – you may receive up to three offers and then you choose which

one you want; do not enrol unless it is the course you really want and UNE is where you

want to go.

SRS applications close 29 September 2017– the SRS booklet, found on UAC website, has

a table for each institution participating in the program. The table shows the selection

criteria used, the process that they follow e.g. date of offers, if they are conditional on

receiving a specified ATAR, date by which it may need to be first preference in order to

receive an offer. It is very important that you read this booklet and follow directions.

Once you have a firm early entry offer and you have carried out acceptance instruction

supplied by the university, you can change your preferences for later Rounds.

Page 8: St Clare’s High School€¦ · Today saw Year 12 students, their parents, their teachers and their whole school community celebrate, what is for most, 13 years of Catholic School

Most offers will be notified on either Thursday, 21 December 2017 (CHANGE

PREFERENCE BY Sunday, 17 December 2017) or Friday, 12 January 2018 (CHANGE

PREFERENCE BY Wednesday, 3 December 2017).

Some programs e.g. E12 Sydney University must always be number one preference in

order to be considered.

HSC results issued Thursday, 14 December.

ATARS released Friday, 15 December.

If you do not receive your first preference in any Round, you can accept what is offered

but do not enrol so that you can resubmit for later Rounds

ALL THESE DATES FOR VARIOUS ROUNDS AND CHANGING PREFERENCES

CAN BE FOUND ON THE INSIDE COVER OF UAC GUIDE 2017-18

It is possible to receive multiple offers – UNE, STAR, other university early entry

programs, SRS and the various Round offers and then it is decision time as you can only

enrol in one course.

It becomes a busy time so, after the HSC, write yourself a timeline of dates so you do not

miss out as ‘I forgot!’ does not mean anything to the institutions.

Deferring your university/college offer

The directions for this will be on your offer or you can contact the university – most

universities allow one year deferment but UNE allows two years… a present.

In general, courses can be deferred but scholarships cannot be deferred.

Once offers are received, the Universities and TAFEs are your best information source

TAFE

Information on TAFE courses available on TAFE NSW website, or individual TAFE

websites e.g. North Coast Institute of TAFE, Taree Campus website, or visit relevant TAFE

Colleges in person.

Application processes vary for courses but, for most, you can register an expression of

interest and the institution will send you information re application process.

Ask TAFE about scholarships as they do exist or, at least, google TAFE scholarships.

Finding a Job

As soon as your last examination is over, you are eligible to register with an employment

agency, e.g. ETC or TURSA - the sooner you register the more chance you have of gaining

employment before the rush of other students. Be the first to apply - don’t wait until after

schoolies!!!

Year 12, all within our community wish you well in your forthcoming examinations and future.

YEAR 12 DRAMA STUDENTS PERFORM AT

THEATRE BITES: On Saturday, 9 September, nine Year 12

Drama students performed at the annual ‘Theatre Bites’

showcase at the Glasshouse theatre at Port Macquarie. The two

self-devised group performances titled ‘A Sad State of Affairs’

featuring Hannah Burley, Tim Daczko, Thomas Lee, Abbie

Towers and Zachary Walton and ‘The Australian Royal Post’

featuring Sarah Earley, Rebekah Cooper, David Smith and

William Avery; were very well received by audience members.

The Theatre Bites Showcase has been running for 11 Years and

is a great opportunity for Mid North Coast

Drama students to perform and show their

talent. The St Clare’s students were lucky

enough to meet and perform with over 40 other

performers from public and private schools

between Taree and Coffs Harbour. A special

thank you goes out to the parents and extra

students who travelled to Port Macquarie to

experience the show. I wish all the members of

the Year 12 Drama class the very best with their

HSC written examinations.

2017 ALL SCHOOLS TAEKWONDO TOURNAMENT RESULTS:

This year’s All Schools Taekwondo Tournament was held on Saturday, 2

September at Barker College, Hornsby. Well over 250 students from 75

schools competed on the day.

The students were very competitive finishing with an impressive

medal tally of 8 Gold, 3 Silver and 6 Bronze.

Congratulations to all team members for a very powerful display of

warrior spirit. Whilst most students being of a gentle nature they

handled themselves with strength and confidence. They also

represented their school and TKD club with wonderful manners and

behaviour on the day.

Congratulations to Daniel Summers, Year 9, St Clare’s High

School – Gold Medal

STUDENT ABSENCES: If your child is absent from school, it is important to tell the school

and provide a reason for your child’s absence within 7 school days. After this time the

absence, by law, must remain as unexplained.

To explain an absence parents and carers may:

send a note, fax or email to the school

telephone the school, or

visit the school

LEAVE NOTES & STUDENT MESSAGES: It would be appreciated if parents/guardians

would send in a written note if their child needs to leave early for appointments etc. Notes

should be handed in at the front office in the morning before roll call. If parents/guardians

need to notify their child of a change of afternoon arrangements, it is necessary to phone the

school prior to 2:25 pm (End of Lunch – Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday & Friday) or prior to

1:55 pm (End of Lunch – Thursday Sport) as it is often difficult to locate students if their last

lesson is a PE Prac or there has been a room change. Students cannot be collected from the

school during school hours by anyone other than a parent or guardian without written

permission. Thank you.

LATE NOTES: Lateness to school is recorded as a partial absence and must be explained to

the school the same way as other forms of absence. Arriving Late for school requires a

handwritten note from a parent/carer or a phone call from a parent/carer or the absence is

recorded as an unexplained partial absence. Thank you.

SCHOOL CLINIC: Students are reminded that if they are unwell whilst at school they are to

advise their teacher who will then send them to the Front Office. If necessary, the office staff

will contact a parent while the student waits in the Clinic. Students are not to contact parents

on their mobile phones as this leaves teachers and office staff unaware of the situation and is

also in breach of the school policy – use of mobile phones. Thank you.
