ST CLEMENT’S CATHOLIC PRIMARY SCHOOL NEWSLETTER

Friday 5th July 2019

YEAR 3 FIRST HOLY COMMUNION ASSEMBLY Year 3 led us in prayer at their assembly as they celebrated making their First Holy Communion with the

whole school community and their families. Acting out the story of the Last Supper, they reminded us that

when we go to Mass and receive Holy Communion, we share that special meal with Jesus too. The children

also shared some of their memories of their special day; Leonardo commented, “I felt so excited and joyful

on my First Holy Communion. This day was so special.” Looking very smart indeed, each child presented an

unfinished clay heart, representing their spiritual journey, together with a beautiful message of thanks to

their parents.

Lord, we ask you to bless us as we made our First Holy Communion.

We thank you, God, for Jesus, your Son.

We thank you for the special meal he shares with us.

Help us to grow together in love and learning.

Feed us with your love.

Give us the strength to make the right choices to be the best we can be.

Amen.

PUNCH AND JUDY

VISIT ST CLEMENT’S! Earlier this week, Punch and Judy came to visit Reception and Key Stage 1 as part of their history topic in

which they are learning about the seaside. The following reports are written by some of the Year 2

pupils where you will read just how much fun they had during the visit!

On Tuesday afternoon The Punch and Judy Show came to visit us. The Punch and Judy Show was

funny because there was a cheeky dog called Toby and he used a tap as a hammer to fix his

basket. When he had the hammer he hit the puppeteer’s finger and his head. The puppeteer’s

name was Ben and Ben told us there was this thing called a swizzle. He uses it to do Mr Punch’s

funny voice and he even showed us it. At first there was some music and then some funny puppets.

There was a funny joke when Judy asked Mr Punch to hold the baby and Mr Punch sat on the baby.

When Judy came back she said, “What are you doing?” and Mr Punch said, “I’m babysitting!”

By Lily

On Tuesday afternoon, Punch and Judy came to school. We had to clap and listen. The Professor

(the puppeteer) caught the cheeky dog out. He was in his basket. Toby the dog brought a hammer

out. Ben the puppeteer put his index finger on the basket and you won’t believe what Toby did…

he hit Ben’s finger! “OW!” said Ben.

Next, Judy said, “Mr Punch, can you babysit my baby?”

“Yes,” said Mr Punch but he sat on the baby! Judy came upstairs and said, “Mr Punch, why are you

sitting on my baby?” Mr Punch replied, “Because I’m babysitting!”. Everyone was roaring with

laughter. Joey the clown came with sausages but greedy crocodile came and gobbled the

sausages. We all had a great time.

BUTTERFLIES IN RECEPTION

Years 1 and 2 had a very enjoyable workshop with Surrey County Council learning through fun and games

about hazards when cycling and scooting. They learnt about the meanings of some road signs and

discussed how to cross the road safely as a pedestrian. All children improved their knowledge and skills

with a smile on their faces.

“We were learning to stop with our brakes

using traffic lights to stop and start”

Imoh

“I liked it when we went in and out of cones”

Jude

A big thank you to Sue and Ann from Surrey

County Council.

PEDALS SAFETY TRAINING

As part of Reception’s learning about growing, the children were fascinated to observe for themselves the ‘life

cycle of a butterfly.’ In class, they watched five very small caterpillars eat and eat until they became very big

caterpillars! As they continued the process of metamorphosis, the children were fascinated by the next stage,

the chrysalis. Every day for about a week they waited and waited and waited (and waited some more!)

Eventually on Friday 28th June, the butterflies emerged from their cocoon and were ready to spread their

wings in the beautiful blue sky.

Reception and their Prayer Partners in Year 6 met and celebrated the moment when the butterflies flew

away. One however did take a little time to rest, on Mrs Flaherty’s finger!

This was a truly awe filled moment for everyone and one we are sure the children will never forget.

GO LIONESSES! In support of the Women's football World Cup

2019, Year 5 designed and made their own football

kit fans. They learnt about how women's football

has developed in recent years and also about some

of the inspirational players on the squad.

You may recall a few months ago that the Rock and Pop Foundation delivered a music taster session with

our Year 2 pupils. We have been considering for some time how we might weave some specialist music

opportunities into curriculum time and this session gave us the opportunity to consider how every child

might have an opportunity to learn to play an instrument. Following some discussion with Rock and Pop

Foundation, and with The Friends of St Clement’s agreeing to some funding for next academic year, we are

now negotiating and planning for each year group from Years 1-6 to have either ukulele or glockenspiel

lessons for a 12 week block in the coming academic year. The funding will also allow us to purchase enough

ukuleles for a whole class and glockenspiels for half a class.

We will keep you posted on our plans. Huge thanks to The Friends of St Clement’s for their support with

this exciting opportunity.

EXTRA MUSIC LESSONS

On Monday 24th June, Year 5 visited our neighbours at Priory Court to listen to a talk about the Air

Ambulance charity that saves lives by using helicopters to treat patients quicker.

We learnt that…

· One life-saving mission costs £3,700!

· Aircraft fuel for around 10 missions costs approximately £1,000!

· A bespoke kitbag costs around £350!

· Protective footwear (for the crew) costs £50!

The staff and residents of Priory Court were extremely welcoming and we had a great time. We also were

given a mini Priory Court cupcake and squash which was delicious!

If you would like to donate to this great charity please visit www.aakss.org.uk for more details.

AIR AMBULANCE TALK

1st Ewell Court Scout Group are raising much needed funds to help the Air Ambulance Kent Surrey Sussex.

They are collecting empty crisp packets which can be recycled and put to a very special use; every 3kg

(400-500 empty packets) is enough to make three special wraps which are used to wrap patients in whilst

being flown to a major trauma centre. This

simple, yet effective, measure allows patients

to maintain their core body temperature

which is key in the chain of survival.

A collection box can be found in the area in

front of the School Office. Your empty packets

will be taken to the Scout Group by Mrs Dunne

who is helping to co-ordinate the collection.

SURREY YOUTH GAMES SELECTION Huge congratulations and thank-you to all of our pupils who put themselves forward to represent Epsom

and Ewell in the Surrey Youth Games and were selected for a range of sports teams. There were some

great team achievements as well as personal triumphs during a fabulous weekend of sport.

Last Wednesday, we took two teams from Years 5 and 6 to a rounders tournament at Stamford Green.

It was a fantastic afternoon of matches, playing nine games between them. There were superb tactics

being displayed, some amazing rounders being scored and some absolutely outstanding fielding. Both

teams were a credit to St Clement's and to top off a wonderful afternoon, Year 5 won the tournament in

a nail biting final! Congratulations Year 5! Thank you to Mrs Kingswell and all the support from the parents.
