It is not surprising that when the new parish of Knocklyon was being founded a quarter of a century ago it was decided to dedicate it to St. Colmcille. There are t h o u s a n d s of ho ly we l l s t h r o u g h o u t Ireland which are still regarded as places of pilgrimage. These wells are associated with local saints or saints who passed through the particular area when on their missionary work or when moving from one m o n a s t e r y to another . A l t h o u g h Colmcille, a prince of the Ui Neill, was born in Gartan, Co. Donegal, his mother was a princess of Leinster whose Chris-tianity was compara t ive ly well estab-l i shed in the ea r ly par t of the s ix th century. He was a pupil of St. Finian in Cluain Ioraird (Clonard) , Co. Meath . Having been called to the priesthood, he continued his studies with St. Mobhi in Glas Naion (Glasnevin). According to tradition he is r e p u t e d to h a v e f o u n d e d a m o n a s t e r y in Daru (Durrow). He also founded monasteries in his native Ulster, the best known being that at Doire (Derry) which got its name f rom the local oak wood and subsequently the place was called Doire Cholmcille. Appropriately there is an oak tree growing beside our local holy well. A gift from the Forestry Department in Northern Ireland, it was planted in 1968 by the Derry Association in Dublin. Cures, particularly for ear and eye ailments, are attributed to the use of the water and the well is known traditionally as Tobar na gCluas.

The story of Colmcil le 's life and work have an important place in Irish literature and the main events are widely known. In 563 Colmcille and twelve com-panions set out on the voyage to Oilean I (Iona), an island off the east coast of Scotland, and built their monastery there. As a pilgrim of Christ, Colmcille success fu l ly carr ied out his miss ion in the Irish territory of Dal Riata and further afield among the Pictish Chieftains. In fact his influence extended as far as Lindisfarne off the north-east coast of England.

He made a brief return visit to Ireland to attend the

historic Convention of Druim Cett, near Leim an Mhadaidh (Limavady) where he d e m o n s t r a t e d h is d i p l o m a t i c and negotiating skills. He was instrumental in drafting an early form of External Rela-tions Act which rat ional ised relat ions be tween this i s land and the o f f s h o r e territory of Dal Riata. An accomplished poet himself, he also secured the special status of the fill which had been under threat.

Colmci l l e died on Sunday, June 9, 597. According to tradit ion his dying plea was that people would have amongst themselves genuine charity and peace. As the Bishop of Derry remarked a couple of years ago during the 1400th celebrations of the Saint, the exhortation re-echoes the sentiment of the great Commandment. "It has" , he said, " t imeless and universal

application. Colmcille's words are apposite, relevant and urgent here in Ireland today. The message is the essential spiritual component in the search for peace in Ireland. The greatest honour we could pay Colm-cille would be to take it seriously and work towards living out Colmcille's dying wish".

On Sunday, June 6, an Ecumenical Celebration will take place at St. Colmcille's Well on the Bally-cullen Road. It will commence at 3 p.m. with a short recital by the Knocklyon Concert Band. This will be followed at 3.15 p.m. by a Service of Worship which will include prayers, readings, pageant, music and song. The service will be followed by an Irish dancing display and music played by the Kelly Group and the Bohernabreena Traditional Group. During the afternoon, light refreshments will be available for the children. Another short recital by the Knocklyon Concert Band will bring the proceedings to an end at 5 p.m.

In this Jubilee Year of St. Colmcille's Parish, it is hoped that many parishioners will attend this special event.

The third term is now well under way here in Gaelscoil Chnoc Liamhna and it is without doubt the busiest and most exciting term in the academic year. Once again the senior children are busy learning violin and we look forward to a recital on Tuesday 1st June. Irish dancing classes have also resumed each Tuesday and parents and children are looking forward to an exhibition of Irish music and dance which will also take place on 1st June. The Infant classes are also benefiting from the expertise of Mairead Ni Chonduin, a visiting teacher who is teaching them music using the Kodaly method.

Bhfomar an-bhroduil as an ngasra a ghlac pairt i bhFeis Atha Cliath. Their Irish dancing teacher, Julie Ni Fhurnain, prepared the Kerry Set with them for the competition, in which they performed extremely well. Congratulations to Maitiu O Nuallain, Dean O Riain, Aoife ni Chathalain, Jade Barcoe Breathnach, Alana Nf Chionnaith, Claudia Sabato, Niamh Ni Fhearafl agus Yvette Barnes.

Second Class made their first confession on April 20th in the Carmelite Convent Chapel, Firhouse. Father Seamus MacGiolla Ruaidhe performed the ceremony. Many thanks to Aine Ui Chionnaith who arranged a beautiful basket of flowers for the altar and to Aoife Nic Chormaic, our violin teacher, who played on the night.

The First Communion took place on May 15th. Parents of First Class organised a party for First Communicants and their families in the school after the church celebration.

Scriobh Ranganna 2 agus 3 chuig Maire Mhic Giolla losa, ag insint di faoin scoil. As a result of their letters, an invitation has been received to visit Aras an Uachtarain this month. Children and teachers are looking forward to this exciting event.

On Saturday 8th May, an Open Day for Infants, due to start school in September 1999 took place. It gave the children the opportunity to meet teachers and see their classroom. If you have a friend who would like to register a child, contact the school without delay.

Three computers are at present being purchased for the school. Thanks to the Tesco vouchers, we will also be in possession of 3 printers shortly. Parents from the school were veiy supportive in our effort to collect these vouchers.

Children from First, Second and Third Class had the opportunity to learn the tin whistle in school this year. Is iontach an rud iad a chloisteal ag seinm ar fud na scoile.

The school is hosting a Golf Classic on 31st May in Killeen Golf Club, from 9 a.m.

to 4 p.m. This is a fundraising event for our school. The cost per team is £160.

This is to include a round of golf, prizes and dinner afterwards. We are also looking for sponsors for

this event. If you would like to participate, please contact the school at 4939262. y

K.A.R.A. (KNOCKLYON ACTIVE RETIREMENT

ASSOCIATION) We have resumed our meetings and activities after the Easter holidays, and are eagerly looking forward to many sunny carefree days in the coming months, le cunamh De. On Tuesday, 20th April we had a cookery demonstration from McDougaU's representative, Triona Power, who introduced us to a variety of Mexican dishes and best of all we got to sample a variety of lovely food at the end of the session.

We have been playing table tennis to help keep us fit and of course the carpet bowls are still as popular as ever and are played every Thursday afternoon from l .30 p.m. to 3.30 p.m. at the Community Centre, Knocklyon.

"Age and Opportunity", an organisation that caters for the participation of older people in various activities, are offering a great variety of events for their Bealtaine Festival, and many of our members, I feel sure, will avail of as many as possible of these events.

We are very happy to see Eileen Campbell and Elizabeth Corcoran back to the ranks again - both were temporarily indisposed but are now fine again, T.G. We also send our best wishes to Jimmy Smyth and hope he will be fit enough to rejoin the "gang" soon - he is missed by us all.

community council • South Dublin County Council has informed the KCC that finance is being provided for the provision of a "Bailey Bridge" along with a 450 metre road by 9 metres wide from the Spawell roundabout to the Firhouse Road. This project is subject to approval by the County Councillors. Finance is still not available for the realignment of the Knocklyon Road. SDCC have also informed us that they have acquired a tract of land at the stables on the Knocklyon Road for the continuation of the footpath. Negotiations are also taking place with landowners on the Scholarstown Road for land in order that footpaths can be put in place.

• The footbridge at Castlefield is being held up by an Industrial dispute", however it is hoped that it should be completed by September.

• The KCC have been assured that there will be no change in present Traff ic system" at the Firhouse/Knocklyon Road junction until the Scholarstown roundabout is complete.

• Landscaping is now taking place along the "green route" and SDCC have informed us that this should be completed by the contractor over the coming weeks.

Unfor tunate ly K n o c k l y o n has been sub jec ted to a great deal of "an t i - soc ia l " behaviour and vandal ism in recent t imes. The pr imary schools are being vandal ised on a weekly basis, not by "outs iders" but by youths f rom Knock lyon parish. These you ths are past pupi ls of the school and the KCC feel th is s i tuat ion cannot and should not be tolerated any longer. As a result a PUBLIC MEETING wi l l be held in the Senior School on TUESDAY 15TH JUNE 1999 AT 8 P.M. to d iscuss "VANDALISM IN KNOCKLYON". This problem concerns everyone in Knock lyon and wi th the long summer hol idays due a large attendance is expected.

• St. Colmcille's Well on the Ballycullen Road, which dates back to the early 1900s is currently under review for a major restoration procedure. This is a long-term project. In the meantime the Annual celebrations are due to take place on June 6th, which is the Sunday nearest the Saint's feast. Volunteers are being requested to help tidy up the site for the occasion and please contact any member of the KCC for details.

• Tidy Up Knocklyon Week took place May 17th - 22nd. (i) The KCC AWARD will be presented to the Tidiest Estate in Knocklyon. (ii) The Cllr. Mary Muldoon Trophy will be awarded to the Estate which shows greatest community effort.

• The Annual Collection for the KCC will take place over the weekend 28th-30th May 1999 outside Superquinn and the Church. We would ask you to support this collection.

Dear Editor, It is very noticeable that the level of vandalism, thuggery and

serious anti-social behaviour generally is on an ever increasing upward spiral in the Knocklyon area. It also appears that the Garda authorities are unable to tackle the problem effectively. Of course the parentslguardians of the teenagers (male and female) involved have a grave responsibility in the matter, but seem to turn a blind eye once it is not literally happening on their doorstep.

As a resident of Idrone Estate I have seen at first hand evidence of all of the above particularly in the environs of the schools and adjacent green areas, i.e. smashed windows, graffiti scrawled on walls and buildings, the threatening and intimidatory presence of gangs of loutish and drunken teenagers shouting abusive and foul language into the early hours of the morning, particularly at weekends.

Well, I for one, have had enough. I am not prepared to allow these thugs by virtue of their unchecked scandalous behaviour take over the area. It is my view that these people both home-grown and from outside must be tackled head-on. To this end I am prepared to join with other residents, who feel as I do, to form an Action Group with the purpose of rooting out those responsible and taking action against them and their irresponsible parents/guardians. Most residents, I believe, would want the area to remain a decent place to live without the destruction by the few who seem hell-bent on turning it into just another ghetto.

Yours sincerely, Idrone Resident (name and address with Editor)

EDITOR'S NOTE: We refer readers to the Report from The Community Council on left and note that a Public Meeting to discuss "Vandalism in Knocklyon " will take place on 15th June at 8 p.m. in the Senior School Hall.

CLLR. M U L D O O N SAYS SLAN

Below we print an extract from a farewell message by local Councillor Mary Muldoon to the people of Knocklyon. We know her friends and neigh-bours in Dargle wood espec-ially will be saddened to learn of her decision to move to the West of Ireland in the near future. She has lived among

them for over twenty-one years, and served the Community in Knocklyon as Councillor for almost fourteen of those years.

Cllr Muldoon was Secretary to Knocklyon Post Primary Committee for over seventeen years, and regrets the fact that building has not commenced as yet on the site at Scholarstown Road. Another"unrealised dream" others is the full re-alignment of Knocklyon Road. She describes, as perhaps her greatest regret the "haphazard manner in which residential development has been allowed to sprawl into green belt agricultural lands ...in the absence of adequate infrastructural development" ...her letter continues.

Dear Editor,

I wish to record my personal thanks to all with whom I have come in contact over the years, those who supported me in the elections, those who made representations to me as their local councillor, those who contacted me to criticize my views on topical issues, those who shared a common environmental vision with me and who reassured me in the lonely times. Thank you for the confid-ence you placed in me. I did my best to give you honest service in return. All of your contacts were useful and, on occasions, very encouraging, even inspiring. I am going to miss you all very much. I want to acknowledge also the support of my councillor colleagues of all parties and none, over the past fourteen years. To those who are fighting the June Election, either as new candidates or as seasoned ones, I wish every success. For my own part, I discovered that party politics did not suit me personally and my happiest time as councillor has been in the role of an independent member, free from the constraints of a party whip.

Finally, I wish to express my thanks to those who produce the newsletter, both past and present. You have provided me with a most important link over the past fourteen years. To Fr. Weakliam and previous editors, my sincere gratitude. May "Knocklyon News" continue to go from strength to strength.

Ba mhaith Horn cuireadh a thabhairt do chach buaileadh isteach chugaim i gCathair na Mart (Westport) ag am ar bith, uimhir

guthain 098-25008 o Mheitheamh ar aghaidh. Go raibh rath ar obair an phobail i gCnoc Liamhna ins na blianta ata romhainn, go raibh sonas agus siochain in bhur mease agus go raibh borru agus forbairt i gcursai creidimh agus cultuir faoi choimirce ar bpatrun uasal, Naomh Colmcille! Ni neart go cur le cheile!

Is mise, le mor-mheas,

Mary Muldoon, County Councillor. On behalf of the Community in Knocklyon we would like to wish Cllr Muldoon a long and happy retirement in the West and extend sincere gratitude to her for her many years of work on our behalf.

^ 1teo<A& friwK (uct ^lutitt PonteA ̂ Below we print an extract from a letter received by

Fr Tony from Fr Ned Ward of the Regina Coeli Mission,

Zimbabwe.

Dear Fr Tony,

Thank you ever so much for the cheque. Please pass on my sincere thanks to all who contri-buted, organised and collected the donations.

Since last year we have managed to do quite a bit of repairs on ceilings and roofs in the school and painted the dormitories. We have commissioned an engineering company to repair an old borehole that has not been used since 1983. This is to serve the hospital only and will supply water whenever the main pipeline from the Marozi River, which is about 7 km. away, fails. A hospital with over 120 beds has to have a water supply at all times.

The equivalent of the ESB in this country is ZESA, and they are working hard to finish their project of supplying electric power to the mission and the surrounding countryside. So gradually some improvements are going ahead at the mission. But so much remains to be done. This month is a very busy time of the year in the hospital since very many patients come from the outlying parts of our parish suffering from malaria, which is still the biggest killer disease worldwide.

Yours sincerely, Ned Ward.

Watch this space for ongoing news of Regina Coeli

Mission.

As we pen these few words our first group of First Communicants have received their First Holy Communion. We congratulate them all and sincerely hope that it was a very memorable day for them - one they'll remember for the rest of their lives. Our thanks and congratulations to the teachers, parents and priests for helping to make it a very special day.

We extend our gratitude to those parents who kindly helped out with the reception on each of the three Sundays. To the ever present Tom Heafey who works tirelessly behind the scenes and of course to all staff members for their co-operation and assistance.

• SAFETY FIRST WEEK Ms Maher successfully ran a Safety First Week in the school recently. The community Garda Niall Brophy visited the classes and some of the older children went to the Traffic School. All second classes are scheduled to visit the Traffic School before the end of the year. Our appreciation to Superquinn for donating some vouchers in relation to Road Safety Week.

• SUBSTITUTE TEACHING We usually experience great difficulty in locating substitute teachers. If there are any teachers out there on career break or otherwise and would like to do some substi tute work on occasions, please forward your name and telephone number to the Secretary.

• SPORTS NEWS The final term in the Junior School sees hurling and camogie coaching underway with Mr Sweeney, Miss Mannion and Miss Meeley taking a group of 24 on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays respectively. We also have a number of prospective DJ Carey's on the waiting list. Watch this space for Croke Park 2003 - the job is underway!

• PARENTS' ASSOCIATION We are very grateful to the Parents' Association for the donation of an overhead projector. We thank them for their continued support and hard work throughout the years. The children (and teachers) had a great time counting the smarties!

A reminder to the parents of the new entrants - a meeting will be held in the school on Wednesday 16th June at 8 p.m. sharp. Our full complement have now been offered places and have accepted. This brings us up to May 27th. All those remaining will be placed on a waiting list and will be contacted as soon as any vacancy, through cancella-tion, occurs. We regret that we are unable to cater for all those wishing to send their children to our school this coming September.

MRS. KISSANE'S 3RD CLASS ROLL UP THEIR SLEEVES DURING SPRING CLEAN WEEK

This has been a marvellous week for St. Colmcille's with two school teams reaching the Division 1 finals in Croke Park and our senior hurlers narrowly missing the great day. MR. MURPHY REPORTS:

• HURLING We have had a very satisfying hurling season in St. Colmcille's with our seniors reaching the semi-final of the Herald Cup and our juniors making history by becoming the first team from the school to reach the Corn Oideachas Final (Division 1).

Wednesday May 12th saw the juniors face neighbours Scoil Mhuire, Rathfarnham in Croke Park. The Knocklyon boys played with great spirit and skill, and gave their all to finish 3-1 to Rathfarnham's 5-2. Well done to all concerned.

Our seniors had the honour of becoming the first senior team from the school to beat the famous Marino C.B.S. in the Herald Cup Competition. They had a semi-final date with St. Mary's, Rathfarnham. Despite super performances from the team we were once again foiled - this time by 3-5 to 1-2. Once again, well done to all involved.

Internal football, hurling and camogie leagues will now occupy our time until the end of June.

MR. SWEENEY UPDATES US ON CAMOGIE NEWS:

• CAMOGIE .The Senior Camogie team earned their third consecutive Division 1 final place in Croke Park with a super semi-final display defeating St. Vincent de Paul G.N.S. Marino by 5-0 to 2-0. They met Scoil Mearnog on Friday 14th May for the Corn Bn. Ui Phuirseil. Unfortunately the gallant girls were beaten by 2 points. Training continues apace for the younger girls in the school with Miss McLoughlin and Mr. Sweeney and with the promising talent there, Friday 14th will hardly be our last visit to Croke Park.

Meanwhile, ninety of our sixth class children went to the Donegal Gaeltacht, Colaiste na Rosanna. I'm sure they prepared diligently for our Seachtain na Gaeilge. Beidh imeachtai Seachtain na Gaeilge ag tosnu ar an Luan 24 Bealtaine.

Our huge thanks to the coaches of our school teams: Mr. P. O'Neill - Junior Hurling Panel, Mr. Murphy and Mr. S. O'Neill -Senior Hurling Panel, Mr. Sweeney and Mr. Kearney - Senior and Junior Camogie respectively.

• TWO NEW ARRIVALS Our best wishes to Ms. Fahy and her family on the birth of Ciara. Mr. Murphy is now well and truly outnumbered in his house with the arrival of his second daughter Orla. Is he planning a camogie team? Congrats, to the Murphy family.

Friendly, unpressurised atmosphere

Karate Kids

K.A.P.E hosted their last monthly morning meeting before the Summer on Wednesday 5th May. The focus of the get-together was a viewing of the plans for the new Pastoral Centre. After we all examined in great detail the proposed plans, Brid O'Connel l answered our numerous queries regarding the new centre. Thanks a million Brid - your participation was most helpful. We now look forward with great enthusiasm to the opening of this wonderful new asset to our Parish.

K.A.P.E. hope to run another Parenting Course in the Autumn but ultimately it will depend on the availability of a room due to the demolition of the prefabs. So watch this space! Meanwhile, have a great Summer and many thanks to all who helped us and dropped in during the year.

YOUR GREAT CONTRIBUTION TO KOSOVO

OUR YOUNG HELPERS As can be been from the above photographs, our Kosovo Appeal was a tremendous success and the Committee would like to thank everybody who contributed. A special 'Thank You" goes to Tom, the school caretaker, and to Superquinn for their support, and to those parents and children who volunteered their help on the day. We could not have done it without you.

Our last lecture by Mr. David Fitzgerald entitled "Homework Without Conflict" was very well attended and we look forward to many more such stimulating evenings in the Autumn.

Finally, congratulations to all the boys and girls who made their First Holy Communion during the past month. The children were wonderful. They sang beautifully, behaved perfectly and looked like angels - a truly memorable occasion was enjoyed by all. Yet again, our dedicated teachers and priests did us proud. Many thanks to all the parents who helped out with refreshments on each of the Sundays.

— Reflection ~~ JOURNEYING

"Youth is wasted on the young"! (So says one of the many proverbs I grew up with.) I d idn ' t understand it then, but I do now. Looking back I see how I so often squandered the boundless energy of teenage years in trying to take life by storm, existing impatiently through the bulk of daily happenings, focussing only on the high points which all too often tended to disappoint or evaporate. Throughout those years I was oblivious of the breathtaking beauty of the world about me and even more of the potential for joy that I now know to be present within the whole of existence. How I would now benefit from the alacrity and enthusiasm of youth; if I had it, in order to explore and enjoy more fully a world more splendid than youth is able to conceive.

Youth is preoccupied with "getting there"! Maturity enables one to relish the journey. And if only one could add the energy of youth to the wisdom of years, en joyment would become exhilaration.

On reflection, I think it must be due to some sort of compensatory law of nature that as the body slows down with the passing years, the spirit is able to extend and grow to absorb more and more of the wonder of creation. And as the hidden depths of the world are gradually revealed in all their awesome splendour, perhaps we should refrain from lamenting the passing of youthful vigour and look forward, instead, to the ever more complete unveiling of life's infinite mystery. And the happiness that brings!

Some of the members of the Knocklyon Concert Band with their Musical Director, Robert Chester after the National Band Championships in Wesley College.

The Knocklyon Concert Band recently competed in the 34th Annual National Band Championships in Wesley College. They played The Kingsbury March and the Clarion Call to an audience of almost 100 proud parents. Geoffrey Whitham (adjudicator) praised the newly formed band for its commitment and foresight in entering national competition despite its young age.

Robert Chester, the Musical Director was delighted with the Band's performance on the day. They were beaten by only two points by near neighbours the Rathfarnham Concert Band in the Junior Concert Band Section. "A wonderful achievement for a first attempt", said Robert. Congratulations to all the members of The Knocklyon Concert Band and also to Rathfarnham. We look forward to your next performance.
