"I am the living bread come down from heaven; whoever eats

this bread will live forever." Three astonishing claims in one

sentence. First: Jesus announces that he came from heaven.

Second: He says that he is bread for people to eat. Third: He

promises eternal life to anyone who eats this bread. What a

lineup! What tremendous faith he expected of these people to

believe such radical statements.

First, he wants them to believe that he was sent by God the

Father. He wants them to believe that he is one with God. If

we ever struggle to believe this, just imagine how much

harder it must have been for these folks who knew him as a

normal guy: "Is this not Jesus, the son of Joseph? Do we not

know his father and mother? Then how can he say, 'I have

come down from heaven'?" We have the benefit of Scripture,

the tradition of the church, thousands of years of Christian

witness, and the sacraments to convince us of who Jesus is.

They didn't.

Next, he does all this talking about bread. He refers to the

miraculous manna--bread that fed the wandering Jews in the

desert--and then claims that he is the new manna. He is the

true bread; his flesh, in fact, is this bread. His body will

become food. Again, we have the whole history of eucharistic

faith, devotion, and miracles to rely on. They didn't.

Finally, he goes so far as to say that in receiving him as bread,

we will live forever. He promises that this intimate union with

him through Communion brings with it the gift of eternal life.

Yes, these three claims work together: Jesus is God. The

bread of Communion is God. And this God we receive is the

source of eternal life.

“Sunday School is an important part of any

Catholic child's education because it puts them in

communion and intimacy with Jesus Christ through

systematic catechesis.”

My Dear Parishioners,

As everyone knows, our Holy

Father, Pope Francis, is scheduled

to celebrate a Papal Mass on

Wednesday, September 23, 2015

at 4:15 p.m. at the Basilica

National Shrine of the Immaculate

Conception inside and outside

along the grounds of the Catholic

University.

St. Columba Church is allotted a

very limited number of tickets and

attendance is by “ticket

availability” only. Therefore I would thank you in advance

for your cooperation and understanding if you could submit a

request in writing, delivered to the rectory or by email.

In your request, please describe your stewardship and/or

involvement at St. Columba Parish. !

Please note that there is only one ticket per request so if a

couple is requesting tickets, we will need two separate letter

requests.

We will need all requests by Friday, August 21st and we will

notify you if you have been allotted a ticket.

Also please note that submitting a request is not a guarantee

for a ticket and ticket holders will either have open seating or

standing only areas. Jumbotrons will be available for

visibility of ticket holders.

Thank you again for your understanding.

Sincerely in Christ,

Fr. Gary

We have received so far around $200,000 for our projects and once we break ground for the restroom construction, we will continue to raise the remaining $250,000 for the whole projects.

I also formed a committee for these projects and they are ♦ Hedy and Graham Thomas – chairpersons ♦ Mary Brennan – member ♦ Damien Downing – member ♦ Efren Sebastian - member

The Special Project has been approved by Cardinal Wuerl. The special project projection to start is on September. I would like to thank all of you who supported and have donated to these projects. May God bless you for your generosity.

CATECHISM IN A YEAR !!

Day 206 - How can one be delivered from serious sin?

What are vices? Are we responsible for other people's

sins?

How can a person be delivered from a serious sin and

reunited with God?

In order to heal the break with God that is caused by a

serious sin, a Catholic Christian must be reconciled with

God through confession.

What are vices? Vices are negative habits that deaden and dull the

conscience, incline a person to evil, and habitually prepare

him for sin.

Human vices are found in connection with the capital sins of

pride, avarice, envy, anger, lust, gluttony, and sloth (or

acedia, spiritual boredom).

Are we responsible for the sins of other people? No, we are not responsible for other people's sins, unless we

are guilty of misleading or seducing another person to sin or

of cooperating in it or of encouraging someone else to sin or

of neglecting to offer a timely warning or our help.
