If you’re not familiar with the work of Steven Wright, he’s the famous erudite scien st who once said “I woke up one morning, and all of my stuff had been stolen and replaced with dupli-cates.” His mind sees things differently than most of us do. Here are some of his gems: 1. I’d kill for a Nobel Peace Prize. 2. Borrow money from pessimists—they don’t

expect it back. 3. Half the people you know are below average. 4. 99% of Lawyers give the rest a bad name. 5. 82.7% of all sta s cs are made up on the

spot. 6. A conscience is what hurts when all of your

other parts feel good. 7. A clear conscience is usually the sign of a bad

memory. 8. If you want the rainbow, you’ve got to put up

with the rain. 9. All those who believe in psycho kinesis, raise

my hand. 10. The early bird may get the worm, but the

second mouse gets the cheese. 11. I almost had a psychic girlfriend, but she le

me before we met. 12. Ok, so what she speed of dark? 13. How do you tell when you’re out of invisible

ink? 14. If everything seems to be going well, you

have obviously overlooked something. 15. Depression is merely anger without enthusi-

asm. 16. When everything is coming your way, you’re

in the wrong lane. 17. Ambi on is a poor excuse for not having

enough sense to be lazy.

18. Hard word pays off in the future; laziness pays off now.

19. I intend to live forever...so far, so good. 20. If Barbie is so popular, why do you have to

buy her friends. 21. Eagles may soar, but weasels don’t get

sucked into jet engines. 22. What happens if you get scared half to death

twice? 23. My mechanic told me, “I couldn't repair your

brakes, so I made your horn louder.” 24. Why do psychics have to ask you for your

name? 25. If at first you don’t succeed, destroy all evi-

dence that you tried. 26. A conclusion is the place where you got red

of thinking. 27. Experience is something you don’t get un l

just a er you need it. 28. The hardness of the bu er is propor onal to

the so ness of the bread. 29. To steal ideas from one person is plagiarism;

to steal from many is research. 30. The problem with the gene pool is that there

is no lifeguard. 31. The sooner you fall behind, the more me

you’ll have to catch up. 32. The colder the x-ray table, the more of your

body is required to be on it. 33. Everyone has a photographic memory; some

just don’t have film. 34. If your car could travel at the speed of light,

would your headlights work?

TWENTY-SIXTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

Coach Paul Today's reading from First Timothy sounds almost like a coach ge ng his team ready for the big game. This coach has much higher goals than a home run or a touchdown. Instead of pursuing a league cham-pionship, he seeks faith, love, pa ence, and gentle-ness. How about us? Are we in the game or on the sidelines? Let's look at what Coach Paul is talking about. Faith is a rela onship with the Lord in which we imitate Jesus' outlook on life, his teachings, his love of God. We struggle with his commands to love our enemies, to turn the other cheek, to forgive all wrongs, and to take up our cross each day. As Paul would say, we are "compe ng well for the faith." We pursue love by listening to the Gospel, in which Jesus tells the parable of the rich man who was only concerned with his own comfort. Jesus says that if we truly understood the prophets, such as our first reading from Amos, we would not spend all our en-ergy and wealth on ourselves. As we learn to let go of our need to have everything go our way, we become more pa ent with people who disagree with us, or with frustra ons and prob-lems. We learn to see God in our setbacks as well as in our successes. Experiencing the Lord is the cham-pionship we want. Tom Schmidt, Copyright (c) J. S. Paluch Co

Please contact the Rectory if your loved ones can be removed from the Prayer List. Always remember that at each and every Mass we pray for those who are ill, names known and unknown. SAFEGUARD THE CHILDREN Did you know? Bystander engagement is cri cal to combat child abuse,. There are far too many cases in which a child is too scared to report abuse, and the adults around him or her do not un-derstand the signs of abuse or too afraid to speak up. Bystanders have more power than they know, especially when it comes to re-por ng abuse and protec ng children. Young adults don’t always have the opportunity or the courage to speak up for themselves, and the adults around them have a duty to help out when they can. For a copy of the VIRTUS® ar cle “Bystander Engagement – Primary Pre-ven on of a Different Sort,” email [email protected] or call 213-637-7227.
