PASTOR’S CORNER 1 1 PASTOR’S CORNER 1

Franz Jaggerstather was born in Austria and was brought up a Catholic. He was an ordinary, unre-markable young man who had only an elementary education. There was nothing about him to suggest that he had in him the stuff of martyrs. However at some stage he suddenly matured. He became very responsible and began taking his religion seriously. He was not, however fanatical about it. He married a girl named Anna and they had three chil-dren. By this time the Second World War was raging. At thirty-six Franz was called up to serve in Hitler's army. But he refused to join up. This was tanta-mount to suicide. Friends tried to talk him into join-ing up. “I cannot join” he said simply. “Why not?” they asked. Because I believe this war is not a just war. Therefore it would be wrong for me to join up. It would be against my conscience. “But where is your loyalty to your people, to your country, to your flag?” they continued. “I love my people, and I love my country. But there is a higher law, God’s law. And God’s law tells me that this is wrong.” It wasn’t that he wanted to die. He had a lot to live for. He was arrested and put in prison. Even his wife begged him to reconsider his decision. But all to no avail. Franz was beheaded on August 9th, 1943. He felt he was obeying the words of Christ. “Give to Caeser what belongs to Caeser and to God what belongs to God!” King Herod minted coins to conform to biblical laws for bidding human or divine images. This was not true of the coins that were used for Roman taxes. They carried a Portrait of the Emperor and the God-dess Roma. Each had the inscription “Tiberias Cae-sar, eminent son of the divine Augustus; high priest! This inscription was a blasphemy that affirmed the divinity of emperors. The Pharisees used this to try to trap Jesus who replied, “Render on to Caeser what is Caesar’s and to God what is God’s.” Today you could say that Caeser’s place has been taken by the secular state, that is the State which is not so much against God as without God. It no longer bases its laws on God’s laws. This can pose a serious

dilemma for Christians, especially those in public of-fice. They cannot impose their own beliefs on others, yet they must not take part in what from a Christian viewpoint is morally wrong. Every Christian living in the Modern World is faced with difficult decisions. There are many little Caesars vying for a piece of our conscience. There is the party, the company, the club. Franz Jaggerstatter shows us that we must give God the first and highest claim on our loyalty. Whatever else we must give to Caesar, let us make sure that we do not give him our conscience. As Christians we have dual citizenship. We are citizens of the United States but we are also citizens of heaven. As St. Paul reminds, we have our citizen-ship in heaven and from it we await the coming of our Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ. All can be summed up with the words of St. Thomas More: I am the Kings good servant, but God’s first.”

LIFE AND RELIGION Who can separate his faith from his actions, or his

beliefs from his occupations? Who can spread his hours before him, saying:

“This for God, and this for myself; This for my soul and this for my body?”

Your daily life is your temple and your Religion. Whenever you enter into it take with you all.

Take the plough and the forge And the mallet and the lute,

The things you have fashioned in necessity or for de-light.

And take with you all people and if you would know God… look about you,

And you will see him playing with your children. Kahil Gibran The Prophet

SAFEGUARD THE CHILDREN Did you know? Product recall no ces Children use a lot of gear – from toys and sports equipment to technology. For parents, this means keeping an eye on product recalls. Recalls alert consumers to an unsafe feature or defect that could cause harm, and offer the opportunity to have that defect corrected, or a new product shipped out. Parents can use product recall search engines and online checklists to keep an eye on their children’s toys and take ac on if any recalls are issued. For a copy of the VIRTUS© ar-

cle “Stay Up-to-Date on Product Recalls,” visit: h p://www.la-archdiocese.org/org/protec ng/Pages/VIRTUS-Current-Online-Ar cles.aspx or call (213) 637-7508.
